Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Wyoming customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I did some research on companies before calling Sherpa and was very happy with them. I had never transported a car and was very nervous about the whole thing— it was my elderly mother’s car, going from LA to a small town in Wyoming. The people I spoke with on the phone were kind and very competent and I never felt like they were trying to hustle me.”

Google
★★★★★

“I just completed shipment from Los Angeles to Wyoming of our personal SUV to a relative. Even sherpa was unable to locate a driver in a 5 business day period but they then sacrificed their own fee to increase the payment to the driver. And we got a reliable driver who delivered the vehicle 48 hours later in Wyoming for exactly the amount contracted and no hassles.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa auto transport was awesome. They shipped my car from Wyoming all the way to Florida. The process was easy, my car arrived on time and the driver was professional and respectful. The price wasn’t bad either considering it was across the country. My car had no damage and everything was still in it. All in all it was a great experience!”

Factors that affect Wyoming Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance and Route: Wyoming’s vast open spaces and mountainous terrain can impact shipping costs. Longer distances and challenging routes through areas like the Rocky Mountains may increase prices. Major interstates like I-80 and I-25 offer more efficient transport options.
  • Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Wyoming. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, provides extra protection from harsh Wyoming weather and road debris for high-value vehicles.
  • Pickup and Drop-off Locations: Shipping to urban areas like Cheyenne or Casper is generally cheaper than remote locations. Consider meeting the carrier in a larger town to potentially reduce costs if you’re in a rural area.
  • Seasonal Factors: Wyoming’s extreme weather conditions can affect car shipping prices. Winter storms and icy roads may increase costs and transit times, while summer is typically busier for auto transport, potentially raising prices.
  • Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger vehicles like trucks or SUVs, common in Wyoming, may cost more to ship due to their size and weight. Inoperable vehicles incur additional fees as they require special equipment for loading.
  • Flexibility and Timing: Opting for a wider pickup window can help reduce costs. However, if you need expedited shipping to beat Wyoming’s winter weather, expect to pay a premium.

Understanding these factors can help you navigate the car shipping process to or from Wyoming more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Wyoming car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles, especially along major interstates like I-25 or I-80.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates when transporting your vehicle to or from Wyoming. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some cars, open shipping offers greater flexibility for negotiating better prices.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways. For example, choosing a spot close to Cheyenne or Casper can often result in more competitive pricing for your car transport.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during the auto transport process.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your Wyoming car shipping. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective transport times, especially during off-peak seasons.

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to Wyoming or moving within the state, it’s crucial to understand local vehicle requirements and regulations. Wyoming doesn’t have toll roads, so there’s no need to worry about removing toll readers. However, the state does require vehicle inspections for out-of-state vehicles being registered in Wyoming. These inspections primarily focus on verifying the vehicle identification number (VIN).

The vehicle registration process in Wyoming is straightforward. New residents have 60 days to register their vehicles after establishing residency. You’ll need to provide proof of ownership, a valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance. Wyoming also requires emissions testing in Teton County for vehicles newer than 1996.

When moving to Wyoming, consider the state’s unique climate and geography. Winters can be harsh, so ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter tires and an emergency kit. The state’s vast open spaces mean long drives between towns, so proper vehicle maintenance is essential.

For those relocating to Wyoming, here are some helpful tips:

  • Set up utilities: Major providers include Rocky Mountain Power for electricity and various local water utilities depending on your location.
  • Internet services: Options include CenturyLink, Spectrum, and local providers.
  • Register to vote: You can do this when obtaining your Wyoming driver’s license.
  • Enroll children in school: Contact your local school district for registration requirements.
  • Get a library card: Visit your local library with proof of residency.

If you’re moving away from Wyoming, remember to:

  • Cancel local memberships and subscriptions
  • Forward your mail to your new address
  • Notify the Wyoming DMV of your move

Whether you’re using car shipping services to transport your vehicle to or from Wyoming, or driving yourself, understanding these local requirements will help ensure a smooth transition. Remember, a reliable car shipping company can provide valuable assistance in navigating the intricacies of auto transport across state lines.

Wyoming Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Wyoming?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Wyoming. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Wyoming?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Wyoming?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Wyoming?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Wyoming

When planning car shipping to or from Wyoming, it’s crucial to consider the state’s unique seasonal weather patterns. Wyoming experiences harsh winters with heavy snowfall, particularly in mountainous regions. This can significantly impact auto transport schedules and logistics.

During winter months (November to March), car shipping services may face challenges due to icy roads and snowstorms. If you’re scheduling Wyoming car shipping during this period:

  • Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers cannot transport vehicles with them installed.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, away from steep inclines that may be hazardous when icy.
  • Remove any items from your vehicle that could freeze and potentially damage the interior.

Summers in Wyoming can be warm, especially in lower elevations. If you’re planning to ship a car during the warmer months:

  • Consider using a sunshade to protect your vehicle’s interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the car before transport.

Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial when booking car transport in Wyoming. The state experiences peak shipping periods that can affect availability and rates:

  • Late August to early September: Increased demand due to college students returning to universities.
  • May to June: Higher traffic as tourists flock to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
  • Winter months: Potential delays due to road closures and severe weather conditions.

To ensure a smooth car shipping experience, book your transport well in advance, especially during these peak periods. By considering Wyoming’s unique climate and seasonal factors, you can better prepare for a successful auto transport experience with your chosen car shipping company.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Wyoming

When considering car shipping to Wyoming for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at universities. At the University of Wyoming, students need a parking permit, which can be purchased online. Most dorms don’t include parking, so plan ahead. During winter breaks, long-term storage lots are available for a fee. Wyoming’s harsh winters make snow tires a must, and it’s wise to check if your car is equipped for the climate before using auto transport services.

At Casper College, parking is generally more accessible, with free lots available. However, some areas require permits. If you’re shipping a car to this area, ensure you’re familiar with the campus map. For those attending Sheridan College, parking is free, but spaces can be limited during peak hours. When using car shipping services to Wyoming, remember to update your insurance and roadside assistance coverage for your new location.

Before finalizing your Wyoming car shipping plans, consider these tips:

  • Check if your chosen car transport company offers door-to-campus delivery
  • Inquire about student discounts for auto transport
  • Plan your car shipping schedule around move-in dates to avoid storage fees
  • Research local winter car maintenance services near your campus

By planning ahead and using a reliable car shipping company, you can ensure a smooth transition to college life in Wyoming with your vehicle.

Wyoming to Oregon. I have never had a car transported before, looked at many reviews and decided to use Sherpa because of the $300 match. My pickup went slightly out of the timeframe, they used the match and was able to locate a driver (GOLZ transport). My car was transported fully enclosed, which I did not pay for. Everyone I dealt with was great and would recommend them to anyone. If I do this again, it will be with Sherpa.”

“Communication was excellent. Vehicle was picked up on time and delivered on time (except for a slight delay due to the roads being closed in Wyoming for snow).”

Consumer Affairs

“So, I live in a somewhat remote area Casper WY. It’s not easy to get a driver to make this extra leg of the trip. Delivery to Denver for example would be easy but Casper is another 250 miles north. I anticipated that it would take a while to find a driver and even though there was one false start with a driver who committed to the pick-up but then decided he did not have room for my car, Sherpa guides stuck with me and in short order did get a driver who braved miserable weather and road closures to get the vehicle here in good conditions. The price quoted was what was paid. They held firm for me (and I think ate some cost) to make this happen. All is well, thank you Sherpa. I would use this service again.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I felt that the customer response, communication, and follow-up were excellent. The vehicle arrived in good order. The only thing that wasn’t perfect was that it took several days to find the driver and pick up the car. I know that the route was a bit challenging from Big Horn, WY to Idaho Falls, ID. Overall I was very pleased with the experience.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Good experience, I could not have driven out and brought it back myself any cheaper. Truckers were in contact all during the haul and brought it right to my door. The truck was in excellent condition and if I had to move another vehicle I would use them again.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Wyoming, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Wyoming. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
