Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Factors that affect Wisconsin Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance and Route: Wisconsin’s central location in the Midwest affects shipping costs. Routes along major interstates like I-94, I-90, and I-43 are typically more affordable than rural areas. Shipping to or from cities like Milwaukee or Madison is often cheaper than remote locations.
  • Seasonal Factors: Wisconsin’s harsh winters can impact car shipping prices. Snow and ice may cause delays or require special equipment, potentially increasing costs. Summer is often busier for auto transport, which can also affect pricing.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your car influence shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks common in Wisconsin may cost more to transport than compact cars.
  • Transport Method: Open transport is the most economical and widely used option for car shipping in Wisconsin. Enclosed transport, while offering extra protection, is typically 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Timing and Flexibility: Booking your auto transport well in advance and having flexible pickup and delivery dates can help reduce costs. Rush orders or specific date requirements may increase prices.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to ship. Non-running cars require special equipment for loading, which can increase the cost of auto transport services.

Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your Wisconsin car shipping needs. For more detailed information on car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re considering enclosed transport for added protection, learn more about open vs. enclosed car shipping options.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Wisconsin car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially bundle your vehicle with others, increasing the chance of discounts.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping offers the lowest rates and greatest flexibility for negotiating prices when transporting cars to or from Wisconsin.
  • Pick strategic locations: Discuss with Sherpa advisors about pickup and dropoff points near major interstates like I-94 or I-43. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and potential liability issues during the auto transport process.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your Wisconsin car shipping service.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Wisconsin’s harsh winters can affect car shipping rates. If possible, schedule your auto transport during milder seasons for potentially lower costs.
  • Explore multi-car discounts: If you’re moving multiple vehicles to or from Wisconsin, ask about potential discounts for shipping more than one car.

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to Wisconsin or moving within the state, it’s crucial to understand local vehicle requirements and regulations. Wisconsin doesn’t use a traditional toll system, so there’s no need to remove toll readers. However, the state does have vehicle inspection laws. Emissions testing is required in seven counties: Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Washington, and Waukesha. New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency.

For those using car shipping services to Wisconsin, it’s important to note the state’s harsh winters. Ensure your vehicle is winterized, including proper antifreeze levels and snow tires if necessary. Wisconsin’s major interstates include I-90, I-94, and I-43, which are crucial routes for auto transport companies.

When moving to Wisconsin, there are several essential tasks to complete:

  • Set up utilities: Major providers include We Energies for electricity and local municipal water utilities.
  • Internet services: Options include AT&T, Spectrum, and CenturyLink.
  • Register to vote: This can be done online or at your local municipal clerk’s office.
  • Enroll children in school: Contact your local school district for registration details.
  • Obtain a library card: Visit your local library with proof of residency.

If you’re moving away from Wisconsin, remember to:

  • Cancel gym memberships and other local subscriptions
  • Forward your mail to your new address through USPS
  • Notify your employer, banks, and insurance providers of your move

Whether you’re shipping a car to or from Wisconsin, choosing a reliable car shipping company is crucial. Sherpa Auto Transport offers expert car transport services tailored to Wisconsin’s unique climate and geographical challenges, ensuring your vehicle arrives safely at its destination.

Wisconsin Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Wisconsin?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Wisconsin. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Wisconsin?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Wisconsin?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Wisconsin?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Wisconsin

When planning car shipping to or from Wisconsin, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse seasonal weather patterns. Wisconsin experiences all four seasons distinctly, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.

During winter months (November to March), Wisconsin often faces heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re shipping a car during this time:

  • Ensure your vehicle is equipped with all-season tires, as carriers cannot transport cars with snow chains.
  • Choose pickup and drop-off locations on level ground to prevent slipping in icy conditions.
  • Remove any items from your car that could freeze and potentially damage the interior.

In summer (June to August), temperatures can soar. For Wisconsin car shipping during warmer months:

  • Consider placing a sunshade in your car to protect the interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items that might melt or warp.

Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial for efficient car transport. Wisconsin hosts numerous colleges and universities, making late August and early September particularly busy for car shipping services. To avoid delays and potentially higher costs, consider scheduling your auto transport a few weeks before or after the back-to-school rush.

Additionally, Wisconsin sees an influx of ‘snowbirds’ – residents who migrate south for winter. This typically occurs in late fall and early spring, potentially impacting car shipping availability and rates. Planning your car transport outside these peak times can lead to more flexible scheduling and potentially lower costs.

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient experience when shipping a car to or from the Badger State. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice tailored to your specific auto transport needs in Wisconsin.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Wisconsin

When considering car shipping to Wisconsin for college, it’s crucial to understand parking policies at various universities. Most campuses require parking permits, which students can purchase online or at the transportation office. For instance, University of Wisconsin-Madison offers different permit options based on location and duration. Students should plan ahead, as spaces are limited and often assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Many off-campus apartments provide parking, but it’s wise to confirm this before signing a lease. For those using auto transport services to bring their cars to Wisconsin, it’s important to arrange for long-term parking during breaks. Some universities offer winter storage options, while others require students to remove vehicles from campus lots during extended holidays.

Wisconsin’s harsh winters demand special consideration. Students should equip their cars with snow tires and keep emergency kits on hand. Before using car shipping services, verify that your vehicle’s insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. Many car transport companies offer enclosed shipping options, which can protect vehicles from winter weather during transit.

Lastly, for those shipping a car to smaller Wisconsin colleges like Lawrence University or Beloit College, check if there are any restrictions on freshman car ownership. Some schools limit parking for first-year students to encourage campus engagement. By planning ahead and understanding these factors, students can ensure a smooth transition when bringing their vehicles to Wisconsin’s colleges and universities.

“I’m blown away at the professionalism, follow-through, and speed in which Sherpa Auto Transport managed the process of shipping my car more than 1600 miles. Here’s how it went: I got online bids from 5 carriers. I called 3 of them that had the most reasonable bids. I spoke to both Josh & Shawn. They spoke to me like a friend. They offered me professional guidance, and explained the process beginning to end. I chose them because they were the best of the top 5 carriers, and coincidentally, they were the least expensive, too. They gave me a 5 day pick-up op in San Antonio, and a 5 day delivery window. With weekends, 14 possible days total. They vetted a driver immediately, he picked up the car in San Antonio the next business day, and delivered it to me in Wisconsin less then 48 hours later. I was prepared to wait 2 weeks for my new car…Sherpa had to me in perfect condition in less than 3 days!!! I highly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport!”

“My wife and I gave our granddaughter a car as a graduation present. The car wasn’t much per se as far as a classic vehicle but it was super important that we had to get it to Wisconsin because she was going to college. So, we had to ship the car 1,503 miles from one door to the other door. We looked at 16 different companies and I went to the Better Business Bureau to find the top three. After I went to the top three, I didn’t wanna go with the most expensive one nor did I wanna go with the least of the top three. I then put it in prayer and went with number two, which was Sherpa. And when I spoke to them, I knew that my search was over. I thought I was talking to somebody who was my long-time friend and neighbor. Also, after going through every one of all those 16, they were not as helpful as Sherpa’s reps. Since I’ve never had a car delivered, I didn’t even know what questions to ask. So, I asked Sherpa’s reps to educate me. Customer service is educating me on the questions that I didn’t even know of how to ask and then go from there. And when I got educated, it made me feel even more comfortable for making the decision to go with Sherpa.”

“We relocated from the West Coast to the East Coast with two vehicles, so we needed to use a transport service. Sherpa Auto Transport transported one from Mountain View, California to Boston and the second one was from Salt Lake City to Green Bay, Wisconsin. We were supposed to drive across the country, but our trip was interrupted by a death in the family. Sherpa arranged the transport in 24 hours and picked the car up in Salt Lake City at the hotel. We went to the funeral and the car met us in Green Bay a few days later. I had originally booked with another company two months in advance, but on the day of the transport, they were nowhere to be found. We had already paid them and they had assigned a driver. The driver called me on the day of the pick up and said that he was not scheduled to be there for two more days. We were flying out to drop our son off at college, so we were stuck. They said not to worry and that they would take care of it. They notified us the next day that they had picked the vehicle up. We got home two days later and found that the car in the driveway had not been picked up. The driver told me that he was gonna pick it up first thing in the morning and when I called back the next morning, I said that the car was still on the driveway, but the driver reported that he picked it up an hour ago. That company was a disaster. I called Sherpa because they had such a high review. They arranged the transport on the same day on an emergency basis, got a driver, and picked the car up and took it to Boston. That bailed us out of a bad situation and it went well. They kept us informed. We couldn’t even get the other company to answer the phone, but Sherpa always answered the phone and they always knew where the car was and gave us updates.”

“My daughter was moving from Wisconsin to California, and we needed to transport her car from here to there so that it doesn’t do the wear and tear of her driving it all the way over there. I looked at three or four companies and sent inquiries to all of them, but Sherpa was the first to call me and they were excellent on the phone. They’re very informative, easy and non-pushy. I also liked the fact that nowadays, there’s a big list that everybody uses with all the drivers, and people bid on different moves. Sherpa doesn’t charge you until they get a driver, so you know that it’s gonna happen. We live up in Central Wisconsin, so I was looking to save some money. The rep said that if I was interested in bringing the car to Milwaukee, it would probably get a lower price so we decided to do that. Once the whole thing started going and we got the guy, he called us and he was coming in from the middle of Wisconsin as it is, so he was able to pick the car up right near where we live, without us having to go down there. I was extremely impressed with both the way Sherpa did things and the way that the Pro Express company did. The guys who delivered were very professional-looking and informative. My daughter was with us as we dropped the car off, and then everything worked just as they said it would. They dropped it off to her, and and it took about a day or two before they said they would in California. Overall, I was extremely pleased with the whole service. My daughter said that the car arrived a little dusty but it looked exactly the same.”

“Shipping from Wisconsin to Maine. While it took Sherpa a several days (more than a week) to locate a carrier I don’t fault them as where we were going (Northern Maine) probably limited the carriers. They finally did and at the price they quoted. Everything worked well, the pickup carrier gave us a 2 day window for pickup and communicated well so he did arrive when he said he would. Same on the other end, except he gave us a little less notice. He called to deliver that evening but since we lived an hour away from the drop off point, it was really not in the cards. We agreed to make the pickup the following morning and he was there when he said he would be. He gave me plenty of time to look over the car without any pressure to assess any damage.. However the car was dirty since it traveled during the winter/spring but it did appear there was no damage to the vehicle. We chatted a bit, interesting guy, paid him and we both went our separate ways. It worked for us but we had no set schedule for the pickup or the drop off. So Sherpa had lots of time to find a driver. By the time they found one we were already gone and my son was the one who met with the original pickup guy. We also didn’t care when the car got to Maine so again schedule made little difference to us. They did however deliver with in the quoted time frame that they said once the car was picked up. So for my circumstances I am very happy, it was a good experience and very reasonable. Well worth the money to avoid the 22 hour drive (all toll roads by the way).”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Wisconsin, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Wisconsin. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]

Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company

When choosing a car shipping company for your Wisconsin transport needs, prioritize reputation and experience. Look for providers with a strong track record of successful auto transports and positive customer reviews. Ensure the company offers adequate insurance coverage and maintains a good safety record with the FMCSA. Consider factors like pricing, service range, and customer support quality.
