- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect West Virginia Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey impacts car shipping costs. Transporting a vehicle across West Virginia’s varied terrain, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Ohio River Valley, affects pricing.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport. Enclosed trailers, while offering more protection, are about 50% more expensive and typically have longer delivery times.
- Location Accessibility: Urban areas near major highways like I-64, I-77, or I-79 are easier to access, resulting in lower shipping costs. Rural locations in the Mountain State may incur higher fees due to challenging access.
- Seasonal Factors: West Virginia’s weather can impact car shipping prices. Winter snow in the mountains or summer tourism peaks can affect transport schedules and costs.
- Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Non-running cars require special equipment, increasing the price.
- Timing Flexibility: A wider pickup window often results in lower costs. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates typically come with premium pricing.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from West Virginia. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your West Virginia car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from the same area.
- Choose open transport: Open carriers offer the most cost-effective option for shipping your car to or from West Virginia. While enclosed transport provides extra protection, open shipping is generally sufficient for most vehicles.
- Pick strategic locations: Discuss pickup and drop-off points with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find spots near major interstates like I-64, I-77, or I-79. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and lower your overall shipping price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates. Carriers may offer discounts for filling spots on existing routes through West Virginia.
- Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer when demand for car shipping services is highest. Planning your West Virginia auto transport during off-peak times can result in lower prices.

West Virginia Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from West Virginia?

In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from West Virginia?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to West Virginia?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in West Virginia
When planning car shipping to or from West Virginia, it’s crucial to consider the state’s seasonal weather patterns. West Virginia experiences all four seasons distinctly, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.
In winter, West Virginia often sees heavy snowfall, especially in mountainous regions. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, not steep inclines, to prevent issues with icy surfaces.
- Remove any items from your vehicle that could freeze and potentially damage the car’s interior.
During spring and fall, West Virginia experiences milder weather, making these ideal seasons for car transport. However, be aware of potential flooding in low-lying areas during spring thaws.
Summers in West Virginia can be hot and humid. If you’re using car shipping services during this time:
- Consider placing a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior.
- Remove any items that could melt or be damaged by high temperatures.
Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial when scheduling West Virginia car shipping. Keep in mind:
- College towns like Morgantown see increased demand for auto transport at the beginning and end of semesters.
- Tourist seasons, particularly in summer and fall, can affect availability and pricing of car shipping companies.
- Military bases may have periodic increases in demand due to training schedules or deployments.
By considering these factors, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient experience when shipping a car to or from the Mountain State. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on West Virginia auto transport.
Car Shipping for College Students in West Virginia
When planning to ship a car to a college or university in West Virginia, it’s crucial to consider parking logistics. Most campuses have specific parking regulations that students must follow. For instance, West Virginia University requires students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. On-campus parking is limited, so it’s advisable to secure a spot early. Many off-campus apartments offer parking, but it’s best to confirm this before signing a lease.
For students using car shipping services to bring their vehicles to school, it’s important to plan for breaks. Some universities, like Marshall University, offer long-term parking options for winter and summer breaks. However, spaces are limited, so early registration is recommended. When considering West Virginia car shipping, keep in mind the state’s varied weather conditions. Winter tires are a wise investment for snowy months, especially in mountainous areas.
Before finalizing your auto transport plans, check your insurance coverage. Ensure your policy is valid in West Virginia and includes roadside assistance. Many car shipping companies offer additional insurance options for the transport process. Lastly, when shipping a car to smaller colleges like Shepherd University or West Liberty University, confirm the delivery location with your chosen car transport provider, as some campuses may have restrictions on large vehicle access.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in West Virginia
For military personnel considering car shipping to West Virginia, it’s essential to be aware of the state’s military installations and their surrounding areas. While West Virginia doesn’t host major active-duty bases, it is home to several National Guard facilities. The West Virginia National Guard operates from locations such as Camp Dawson in Preston County and the McLaughlin Air National Guard Base in Charleston.
When planning your auto transport to West Virginia, keep in mind that most National Guard facilities have limited on-base parking. Members often need to arrange their own parking solutions, especially for long-term storage. The neighborhoods around these installations generally have ample street parking, but it’s wise to check local regulations.
For those relocating to West Virginia for military service, vehicle registration follows standard state procedures. However, active-duty personnel may be eligible for certain exemptions or extensions. It’s advisable to contact the West Virginia DMV for specific guidelines.
While West Virginia doesn’t have large military commissaries, nearby states offer these resources. The Exchange at Fort Lee, Virginia, is a popular option for many West Virginia-based service members.
At Sherpa Auto Transport, we’re proud to offer a $50 military discount on our car shipping services. We sincerely thank all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice. When you’re ready to ship a car to or from West Virginia, our team is here to ensure a smooth and reliable transport experience.

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in West Virginia, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of West Virginia. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
