Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Vancouver customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“We moved two vehicles with Sherpa. Working with the reps was all pretty positive. I started with an online thing and they contacted me. We worked things out. The first vehicle was really good ’cause they were able to drop it off right in front of our place in Pennsylvania, which is a little bit out in the country. The only issue was coordinating everything from Vancouver, Washington.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I shipped a Toyota Prius 3,000 miles. I looked up 3 companies and Sherpa have better reviews online. They gave me a three-day window for the delivery of the car and they delivered within that window. The car arrived the same condition as I left it in. The cost seems expensive, but that’s just the going rate for shipping cars and considering what I got, I was happy with my experience.”

Google
★★★★★

“Our overall experience with Sherpa was largely positive. They were very responsive to our questions and concerns about our auto transport from Southern California to the PNW. Eventually, the car made it up to their yards in Vancouver, Washington to ultimately be transported (final leg of the trip) to our city.”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Vancouver, WA significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Vancouver. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection from weather and road debris, which can be beneficial during Vancouver’s rainy seasons.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship to or from Vancouver due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Route Popularity: Vancouver’s proximity to major highways like I-5 and I-205 can help reduce costs, as these routes are frequently traveled by auto transport carriers.
  • Seasonal Factors: Car shipping prices to and from Vancouver may fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months often see higher demand and prices, while winter can bring challenges due to potential snow and ice on mountain passes.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Terminal-to-terminal service in Vancouver is usually cheaper than door-to-door delivery, but less convenient.
  • Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship to or from Vancouver as they require special equipment for loading and unloading.
  • Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to lower car shipping costs, while expedited services will increase the price.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from Vancouver, WA. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Vancouver car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially bundle your vehicle with others, leading to cost savings.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and competitive pricing.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-5 or I-205. This can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your overall car transport price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during auto transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your car shipping service.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to or from Vancouver, WA may be more affordable during off-peak seasons when demand is lower.

How does Vancouver Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process to or from Vancouver, WA, can be straightforward with the right guidance. Here’s a step-by-step guide tailored for Vancouver residents:

  • Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable auto transport company. This will give you a clear idea of costs based on factors like vehicle type, distance, and shipping method.
  • Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car shipping service. Remember, nothing is typically due upfront when booking.
  • Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the pickup date, thoroughly clean your car and document its condition. This is crucial in Vancouver’s often rainy weather, as it helps identify any pre-existing damage. Remove personal items and ensure your gas tank is no more than a quarter full.
  • Consider Local Factors: Vancouver’s proximity to I-5 and I-205 makes it easily accessible for auto transport. However, be aware that winter weather can occasionally impact shipping times, especially if snow affects the mountain passes.
  • Meet the Carrier: On pickup day, you or an authorized representative will meet the carrier. They’ll perform an inspection and take possession of your vehicle.
  • Track Your Shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Most car shipping companies offer regular updates.
  • Receive Your Vehicle: Upon delivery in Vancouver (or your destination if shipping from Vancouver), inspect your car thoroughly. Sign the bill of lading and pay any remaining balance to complete the auto transport process.

Vancouver Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When preparing for car shipping to or from Vancouver, WA, it’s essential to understand local regulations and moving considerations. For vehicle transport, ensure you remove your Good To Go! pass, Washington’s electronic toll collection system, to avoid unintended charges during shipping. Washington state requires vehicle inspections for emissions in certain counties, but Clark County (where Vancouver is located) is currently exempt. However, it’s wise to check for updates before your move.

Registering your vehicle in Washington involves providing proof of ownership, completing a Vehicle Certificate of Ownership Application, and paying applicable fees. New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. Vancouver doesn’t require specific parking passes for residents, but be aware of street parking regulations in your neighborhood.

When settling in Vancouver, set up utilities through Clark Public Utilities for electricity and water services. For internet, providers like Comcast Xfinity and CenturyLink offer services in the area. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll children in the Vancouver Public Schools system. The Fort Vancouver Regional Library offers free library cards to residents, providing access to a wealth of resources.

If you’re moving away from Vancouver, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail through USPS, and notify important contacts of your address change. For those moving to Vancouver, be prepared for mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The city’s proximity to I-5 and I-205 makes it easily accessible for auto transport services.

Whether you’re using car shipping services to move to or from Vancouver, WA, understanding these local nuances will help ensure a smooth transition. Remember, a reputable car transport company can provide additional guidance on preparing your vehicle for shipping in accordance with local regulations.

Vancouver, Washington Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Vancouver?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Vancouver. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Vancouver?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Vancouver?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Vancouver?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Vancouver

When planning car shipping to or from Vancouver, WA, it’s crucial to consider the city’s seasonal climate factors. Vancouver experiences mild winters and warm summers, but there are still important weather-related considerations for auto transport.

During the winter months (November to February), Vancouver can experience occasional snow and ice. If you’re shipping a car during this time:

  • Ensure your vehicle doesn’t have snow chains, as carriers can’t transport cars with them attached.
  • Choose pickup and drop-off locations on level ground to prevent issues with icy inclines.
  • Remove any items from your car that could freeze and potentially damage the interior.

In the summer (June to September), temperatures can rise significantly. For car transport during warmer months:

  • Consider placing a sunshade in your car to protect the interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items that might melt or warp in high temperatures.

Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial for efficient Vancouver car shipping. The city sees increased demand for auto transport services during specific periods:

  • Late August to early September: Many students return to nearby colleges, increasing demand.
  • Late spring and early fall: Snowbirds often schedule their car transports during these times.

To avoid potential delays and higher costs, consider scheduling your car shipping a few weeks before or after these peak periods. By planning ahead and taking these factors into account, you can ensure a smooth and efficient auto transport experience to or from Vancouver, WA.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Vancouver, Washington

When considering car shipping to Vancouver, Washington for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation. Washington State University Vancouver and Clark College are the main institutions in the area. Both require parking permits, which can be purchased online or at campus offices. WSU Vancouver offers various permit options, including annual and semester passes. Clark College has daily and quarterly permits available. Remember, parking rules are strictly enforced, so always display your permit properly!

For students living off-campus, check if your apartment includes parking. If not, factor in additional costs for nearby lots. When using auto transport services to bring your car, inquire about winter storage options if you plan to leave during breaks. Vancouver’s mild winters rarely require snow tires, but it’s wise to have all-season tires. Lastly, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. Being prepared will make your college experience in Vancouver much smoother!

“A great experience with Sherpa from the very first inquiry, all communication, car transport pickup and drop off: WA to VA. Driver excellent as well. My Lexus Sedan was in great condition throughout entire cross country transport. Very pleased with Sherpa and would highly recommend.”

Consumer Affairs

“I was happy with the fact that everything happened the way Sherpa said and that they explained everything in advance. So, it went very smoothly.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“Fantastic service. Got my car shipped without a scratch from Washington state to New Jersey in under a week. No unpredictable fees, everyone was very courteous, no high pressure sales. Price is a little higher but the peace of mind was worth it. Only complaints were that the contractor picking up the car didn`t give me that much notice, I had to call them directly to find out they were picking the car up the next day – but they did respond immediately, which is more than I`ve heard you can say about other companies. The driver dropping off the car in New Jersey also asked to drop it off an evening earlier than planned, which could have been inconvenient for some but was perfect in my case. Be forewarned that they can rarely make it into residential streets, so you`ll likely end up picking your car up from a nearby shopping center or other large parking lot.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Vancouver, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Washington. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel.
