- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Washington customers say about Sherpa:
“I enjoyed the flex quote provided by Sherpa. The original quote I received was very accurate and it was exactly what happened after the completion of the transport. The final cost in relation to the quality of service that I got was perfect. I got exactly what I paid for and a little bit more because any time that I had a question, I talked to the same person, Tim. That was very helpful because he knew me, exactly what I had planned with the company, and where I was going, and he was familiar with my story, and I didn’t have to keep calling and talking to a different person, and explaining things to him over and over again.”
“For the second vehicle, the driver didn`t think he can make it out here. He requested we meet him in another location, which I didn`t have a problem doing. But we had to drive 50 miles to go meet him and get the vehicle. That vehicle is a brand new one that my son had with 5,000 miles on it. Someone picked it up in the dark and we didn`t see it. Within a day, we saw that there was a paint chip on the door handle. Somebody had put white touch-up paint on it. Sherpa said we could file a claim and if it was $200 or less, they could cover it directly which they did by crediting the amount that we paid them.”
“Fantastic service. Got my car shipped without a scratch from Washington state to New Jersey in under a week. No unpredictable fees, everyone was very courteous, no high pressure sales. Price is a little higher but the peace of mind was worth it. Only complaints were that the contractor picking up the car didn`t give me that much notice, I had to call them directly to find out they were picking the car up the next day – but they did respond immediately, which is more than I`ve heard you can say about other companies.”

Factors that affect Washington Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Washington’s location in the Pacific Northwest affects shipping costs. Longer distances, such as shipping from the East Coast, will increase prices. However, its proximity to major West Coast cities like Portland and Seattle can make regional transport more affordable.
- Route: Washington’s extensive highway network, including I-5, I-90, and I-82, facilitates easier car transport. However, shipping to remote areas away from these main routes may increase costs.
- Season: Washington’s climate can impact car shipping prices. Winter snow in the Cascade Mountains may cause delays or require alternate routes, potentially increasing costs. Summer is often busier for auto transport, which can also affect pricing.
- Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your vehicle influence shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in Washington’s outdoor-oriented culture, may cost more to ship than compact cars.
- Transport Method: Open transport is the most economical option for most vehicles. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, offers additional protection and may be preferred for luxury or classic cars, especially during Washington’s rainy seasons.
- Timing: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can help reduce costs. Rush services for time-sensitive moves will typically incur higher fees.
- Market Conditions: Fuel prices and overall demand for car shipping services in Washington can cause fluctuations in transport costs.
Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your Washington car shipping needs. For more detailed information on cost factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Washington car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is typically more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates, especially along major interstates like I-5 or I-90 in Washington.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways. For example, areas close to Seattle or Spokane often offer more competitive pricing due to their proximity to key transport routes.
- Lighten your load: Remove personal items from your vehicle before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability concerns.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better pricing options. Consider a range of dates rather than a fixed schedule.
- Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to/from Washington may be more affordable during off-peak seasons. Spring and fall often offer more competitive rates compared to busy summer months.
- Explore multi-car discounts: If you’re shipping multiple vehicles, ask about potential savings. Sherpa Auto Transport may offer discounts for transporting more than one car.

How does Washington Car Shipping Work?
Navigating the car shipping process to or from Washington requires careful planning, especially given the state’s unique climate and geography. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth auto transport experience:
1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free instant quote from a reputable car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport. This will give you a clear idea of costs based on factors such as your vehicle type, pickup and delivery locations, and preferred shipping method.
2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, Washington’s weather can be unpredictable, so consider booking enclosed transport if you’re shipping during the rainy season to protect your vehicle.
3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the pickup date, thoroughly clean and inspect your car, documenting any existing damage. Remove personal items and ensure your vehicle is in good working condition. If you’re shipping to Eastern Washington, consider the possibility of snow and prepare your vehicle accordingly.
4. Meet the Carrier: On pickup day, you’ll meet the carrier for a final inspection and to hand over the keys. If you’re shipping from a busy urban area like Seattle, ensure you’ve arranged a safe, legal spot for the carrier to load your vehicle.
5. Track Your Shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Washington’s diverse terrain, from the Cascade Mountains to the Columbia River Gorge, can impact travel times, so be patient and flexible.
6. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly before signing off on the shipment. Pay any remaining balance, and you’re all set!

Washington Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to Washington or preparing for a move, there are several important factors to consider. Washington’s unique climate and regulations require special attention for a smooth transition.
First, let’s address vehicle-specific requirements. Washington uses the Good To Go! pass for tolls on major highways. If you’re car shipping to Washington, remember to obtain this pass or remove any existing toll transponders to avoid unexpected charges. Vehicle inspections aren’t required for most passenger vehicles, but emissions testing is mandatory in certain counties.
The vehicle registration process in Washington is straightforward. New residents have 30 days to register their vehicles. You’ll need to visit a local vehicle licensing office with your out-of-state title, driver’s license, and proof of insurance. Washington also requires all vehicles to have liability insurance.
For those shipping a car from Washington, don’t forget to notify the Department of Licensing about your move and cancel any local parking permits.
When settling in Washington, setting up utilities is crucial. Major electricity providers include Puget Sound Energy and Seattle City Light, while water services are typically managed by local municipalities. For internet, providers like Comcast and CenturyLink offer services in most areas.
Other important tasks include:
- Updating your voter registration
- Enrolling children in local schools
- Obtaining a library card (a great way to connect with your new community)
- Familiarizing yourself with Washington’s rainy climate and investing in appropriate gear
If you’re leaving Washington, remember to forward your mail, cancel local memberships, and notify relevant authorities of your move.
Whether you’re using car transport services to Washington or moving away, understanding these local nuances will ensure a smoother transition. And remember, when it comes to auto transport in Washington, Sherpa Auto Transport is here to help navigate the journey.
Washington Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Washington?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Washington. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Washington?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Washington?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Washington?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Washington
When planning car shipping to or from Washington, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse climate and seasonal factors. Washington experiences distinct seasons, each with unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, particularly in eastern Washington, heavy snowfall can affect car shipping services. If you’re shipping during this time:
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t move vehicles with these installed.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, avoiding steep inclines that can be treacherous in icy conditions.
- Remove or properly insulate items that might freeze and expand in the car.
During summer, especially in eastern Washington, temperatures can soar. When you ship a car in hot weather:
- Place a sunshade in the windshield to protect the interior.
- Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt or warp.
Be aware of peak auto transport times in Washington. College towns like Seattle, Pullman, and Bellingham see increased demand for car transport services at the beginning and end of academic terms. Consider scheduling your Washington car shipping a few weeks before or after these busy periods to avoid higher rates and longer wait times.
Washington also experiences an influx of ‘snowbirds’ – retirees who spend winters in warmer climates. This typically occurs in late fall and early spring, potentially affecting car shipping company availability and pricing.
By considering these seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother, more cost-effective experience when shipping a car to or from the Evergreen State.
Car Shipping for College Students in Washington
When considering car shipping to Washington for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at universities. Most campuses in Washington have specific parking regulations. For example, at the University of Washington, students need to purchase parking permits, which can be done online. Parking is limited, so it’s advisable to apply early. Many off-campus apartments offer parking, but it’s not guaranteed, so check beforehand.
For students planning to use auto transport services to bring their cars to Washington, consider long-term storage options during breaks. Some universities offer secure parking lots for extended periods, but spaces are limited. Alternatively, look into local storage facilities that offer vehicle storage.
Weather is another crucial factor when shipping a car to Washington. The state experiences significant snowfall in some areas, so winter tires might be necessary. Before using a car shipping company, ensure your vehicle is prepared for Washington’s climate.
Lastly, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to Washington. Some policies may need adjustments when moving to a new state. By considering these factors, you’ll be well-prepared for car transport to Washington and your college experience.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Washington
Washington state is home to several military installations, making it a key destination for service members and their families. Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), near Tacoma, is the largest military installation in the state, housing both Army and Air Force personnel. On-base parking is available, but can be limited, so many residents opt for off-base housing. Neighborhoods surrounding JBLM generally have ample street parking, but always check local regulations.
Naval Base Kitsap and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island are crucial Navy facilities in Washington. Both bases offer on-site parking, but space can be competitive. The surrounding communities are typically military-friendly, with reasonable parking options.
For all bases, vehicle registration follows Washington state laws. However, active duty military members from out-of-state may keep their home state registration if desired. The Department of Defense’s Military OneSource website is an excellent resource for relocating service members, offering information on housing, schools, and local services.
Each base has its own commissary and exchange, providing cost-effective shopping options for military families. Additionally, many local businesses near these installations offer military discounts.
When considering car shipping to Washington for your military move, remember that Sherpa Auto Transport offers a $50 military discount. We sincerely thank all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice. Our team is committed to providing top-notch auto transport services to ease your relocation process.
Reviews from our Washington Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Washington customers:
“It was an easy process from start to end, from the time I picked up the phone and I called the customer service person. She was super helpful and gave me the ins and the outs about car transporting because I had no idea what that looked like. So, she gave me how it would go, and it went according to plan. Sherpa Auto Transport gave me a six-day window to pick the car up, and the dealership where I bought the car in Philadelphia said the car was picked up on a Wednesday afternoon. I got pictures of the car being loaded. It was an 80-foot enclosed transporter. It went seamless from what I heard from the dealership. I got a call from the driver who had the car on his transporter when he got here on early Monday morning when I went to pick up the car. I live in a residential area of Seattle and I said, “I will come to you.” I went over to Bellevue, Washington to pick it up, which is 20 minutes away. He had six or seven cars already out. And it was easier. So, it saved him the heartache of driving around this residential area. He was superb. The window they gave me was a week, plus to pick the car up, and it would take a week to get here, even 10 days possibly. They exceeded that by a long shot.”
“Our overall experience with Sherpa was largely positive. They were very responsive to our questions and concerns about our auto transport from Southern California to the PNW. Keep in mind, they are ” the middle man” in the transport process. They find the “carrier” company for you. In our case, it was Diesel Auto Express Nationwide Auto Transport. We had our pick up time delayed four times, which was super frustrating. We almost went with another carrier but Sherpa could not find another one, so we roughed it out waiting .Eventually, the car made it up to their yards in Vancouver, Washington to ultimately be transported (final leg of the trip)to our city. My only beef is that the driver delivered the car at a very early morning time of 4:30 a.m. Too early. Car was fine. No damage, no other issues.”
“I rarely leave reviews for things, but I wanted to for Sherpa because it was my first time shipping a vehicle and I chose Sherpa as my broker, and everything went great! They chose West Coast Auto Transport as my carrier (which they assigned very quickly) for shipping my car from WA State to Maryland, and their drivers were so kind and professional. They picked up my car on the first day of the pickup window, and despite a delay in delivery, the carrier gave me an update and the driver for delivery was very communicative about arrival and it truly was door-to-door service! He parked his truck down the road and personally drove my vehicle right to my apartment building door – so awesome! I will absolutely use Sherpa again for any future car shipping needs.”
“Sherpa found a good driver for us who picked up and delivered our cars within the quoted time frames. The cars arrived with no damage or scratches or anything. We shipped two Subarus from southern Utah to Washington state. Sherpa offers a military discount and a clean car refund, which I appreciate. Additionally, they also allowed us to ship 100 pounds of belongings in each of the vehicles. I would use Sherpa again if I need to ship cars within the US.”
“I needed to transport two cars from Alabama to Washington near the 4th of July holiday. I called Sherpa Auto Transport 1 month ahead of my desired transport date and met Dylan, a SAT representative, over the phone. He answered all my questions, reassured me of my concerns, and sent a follow-up email regarding our conversation. SAT was able to get a reputable carrier, and the carrier was a husband-wife company. The carrier was able to load our cars by our front door on a Wednesday with a projected arrival date the following Monday. Our cars arrived safely 1 day earlier at the front door. If we need to move across country again, we’ll be using Sherpa.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Washington, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Washington. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
