Super pleased with the quik delivery and incredibly exceptional service. They never veared from their original quote even when my delivery address was mildly changed. Factors that affect Suffolk Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Suffolk’s location in southeastern Virginia affects shipping costs. Transporting a car to or from Suffolk over longer distances typically increases the price.
- Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to Suffolk. Enclosed transport, while about 50% pricier, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against Suffolk’s variable weather conditions.
- Location Accessibility: Suffolk’s proximity to major routes like I-64 and US-58 can help reduce costs. Rural pickups or deliveries in Suffolk may increase prices compared to more accessible urban areas.
- Flexibility: A wider pickup window, typically five business days, often results in lower car shipping costs to or from Suffolk. Expedited or specific date services will increase the price.
- Vehicle Specifications: The size, weight, and condition of your car impact Suffolk auto transport costs. Larger or inoperable vehicles generally cost more to ship.
- Seasonal Factors: Suffolk’s mild climate means less seasonal variation in car shipping prices. However, summer months and January typically see higher demand and costs industry-wide.
Understanding these factors can help you plan your Suffolk car shipping more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re considering enclosed transport for your vehicle, learn more about open vs. enclosed car shipping options.
Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book in advance: Schedule your Suffolk car shipping at least two weeks ahead. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost savings.
- Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major highways like I-64 or US-58. This can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible with dates: The more adaptable you are with pickup and delivery times, the better options you’ll have for cost-effective auto transport to or from Suffolk, VA.
- Consider seasonal timing: If possible, schedule your car shipping during off-peak seasons to potentially secure better rates.
- Explore group shipping: Ask about bundling your vehicle with others heading to similar destinations for possible discounts.

Suffolk Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When relocating to or from Suffolk, VA, it’s essential to understand the local vehicle requirements and regulations. Virginia has specific rules for car registration and inspection that new residents should be aware of. Within 30 days of moving, you must register your vehicle with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The state also requires annual safety inspections, so be prepared to have your car checked soon after arrival.
For those using car shipping services to transport their vehicle to Suffolk, it’s wise to remove your E-ZPass transponder before shipping. This toll collection system is used throughout Virginia and neighboring states, and you don’t want to incur charges while your car is in transit. Once settled, you can easily obtain a new E-ZPass for use on local toll roads.
Suffolk’s climate can be challenging for vehicles, with hot summers and occasional severe weather. When shipping a car to the area, consider requesting enclosed auto transport for added protection against the elements. Upon arrival, you may want to invest in a good car cover to shield your vehicle from sun damage and potential hurricane-related debris.
As you settle into Suffolk, there are several local matters to address. Set up utilities through Dominion Energy for electricity and the City of Suffolk for water services. For internet, providers like Cox and Verizon offer high-speed options. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if you have children, enroll them in the Suffolk Public Schools system.
If you’re moving away from Suffolk, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify the DMV of your address change. When choosing a car shipping company for your departure, look for one familiar with Suffolk’s layout and the major routes like US-58 and US-460, which can facilitate a smooth pickup process.
Whether you’re arriving or departing, understanding these local nuances will make your transition smoother. And when it comes to auto transport, choosing a reliable car shipping company that knows Suffolk’s ins and outs can make all the difference in your moving experience.
Suffolk, Virginia Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Suffolk?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Suffolk. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Suffolk?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Suffolk?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Suffolk?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. Reviews from our Virginia Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Virginia customers:
“I just had my very first car shipment experience, which was a bit complicated: I was leaving my car in Virginia beach after a road trip and flying to Minneapolis for a wedding. I just didn`t have time to make that drive between work and the wedding, but I live in Chicago. So I needed my car moved from Virginia beach to Chicago without me being in either location physically. I researched the options for shipment companies and read about all the nightmare scenarios that could happen. However, Sherpa was highly rated, reasonably priced, and easy to work with. I also felt secure in their guarantee that the amount wouldn`t change and they would front their own money to the drivers to make sure. They explained the timeline of how much I owed at each stage, such as locking in the rate and getting the driver. When the driver arrived to get the car, I wasn`t present, but I felt secure because he took sooo many photos and videos of the car, along with a very thorough review. He got the car to Chicago ahead of schedule and dropped it off with my roommate. He even came back after he left to help her take the emergency brake off. I can`t recommend Sherpa and this driver enough! Please choose them, especially if you have a complicated situation or want to feel taken care of!”
“I called around to a few car places to get quotes and a lot of companies I felt were very pushy about setting my transportation up with them, Sherpa Auto was very informative and patient with me when making my decision. After calling a few times to get more information with my arising questions I was pretty content with my decision on choosing Sherpa. The process was very quick after the deposit process, they called me back that same day letting me know they found a trucking company to transport my two vehicles from California to Virginia. I was very worrisome about packing my vehicle as well because I’ve heard horror stories about people getting their things taken; but luckily everything was still in both my vehicles. The drivers were able to get my vehicles from California to Virginia within two and a half days which I was completely surprised about since it’s all the way across the country. I definitely made the right decision with choosing Sherpa and I would definitely recommend them to anyone who ships their vehicles.”
“I was moving from Tucson to Virginia. I talked to someone in May and because I called that early, Sherpa gave me a substantial discount so that I wasn`t paying the summer rates. The original person that I dealt with was very good. He was very friendly. He confirmed everything in writing. He was very, very helpful. The driver was extremely friendly, and helpful. He gave me a general idea of when the car was going to be delivered up to Virginia and how he would reach us. It was at night when he delivered it. The guy was very professional. He was prepared. He had the car unloaded right away and then took off for Philadelphia. It was a very, very easy move. I`ve encouraged other people to use Sherpa. The only issue that we had was that no one could tell me precisely when the car was going to be picked up. We thought it was gonna be picked up on Friday, but it wasn`t picked up until Sunday. But that was no big deal. They confirmed that someone would be there and they were.”
“I transported my Prius from DC to San Diego. As this is my first time to use an auto transport service I was very leery and called a number of companies. From the Josh M at Sherpa was transparent with the process and was the only carrier who told me outright that the service will not be able to pick up in DC and that the handover was to happen in nearby Virginia. They were able to get a “spot” in Unified Auto Trans Corp and my car was transported without a hitch. Unified Auto Trans Corp was excellent! Sam the driver communicated well and gave important information. He was very thorough with the car inspection. Car arrived as expected.”
“Sherpa gave me a date range and they made it within the range. It was the last day of the range, but they were able to lock in within a day or two of the last day of the range. They told me it would be two to five days, but I got the car the next day from when they picked it up. They picked it up around Washington, DC area and dropped it off in Atlanta. My son was at the pick-up. He said they walked around the car and they took pictures of any dings and dents. It was a pretty seamless process. Once the car was in motion, I had no contact with the courier. During the drop-off, they were able to get to my neighborhood. The problem is, in our neighborhood, they’re relocating some water mains and some sewer lines. So, there are streets that are absolutely closed off, and the navigation system that the driver was using didn’t have that information. So, he got stuck behind a closed street. It was easier for him to just unload the car on a regular street, and then just drive it to the house and my wife took him back to his truck. According to the pictures my son sent me, the car was the exact same as when he picked it up. Sherpa guaranteed the price and we Venmoed the delivery driver and it was the exact same price.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Suffolk, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Virginia. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
