When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Blacksburg Car Shipping Prices
- Distance and Route: The distance between pickup and delivery locations significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Blacksburg, VA. Longer distances generally mean higher prices. However, Blacksburg’s proximity to major highways like I-81 can help reduce costs for some routes.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to Blacksburg. Enclosed transport, while offering extra protection, is about 50% more expensive and typically takes longer. It’s usually only necessary for high-value or classic vehicles.
- Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship than standard cars. This is due to the extra space and fuel they require during transport.
- Seasonal Factors: Blacksburg’s weather can affect car shipping prices. Winter conditions, especially in the mountainous areas around the town, may lead to higher costs due to potential delays or the need for specialized equipment.
- Pickup and Delivery Locations: Shipping to or from Blacksburg’s urban areas is generally cheaper than to rural locations in Montgomery County. Consider meeting the carrier at a more accessible location to potentially reduce costs.
- Timing and Flexibility: Opting for a flexible pickup window can lead to lower car shipping costs. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates typically come with premium prices.
- Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship to or from Blacksburg due to the need for special equipment. Ensure your car is in running condition to avoid additional fees.
Understanding these factors can help you estimate and potentially reduce your car shipping costs to or from Blacksburg, VA. - Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better pricing options. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective shipping times.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) handles this process, which includes providing proof of insurance and paying a registration fee.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Blacksburg?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. Reviews from our Virginia Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Virginia customers:
“I just had my very first car shipment experience, which was a bit complicated: I was leaving my car in Virginia beach after a road trip and flying to Minneapolis for a wedding. I just didn`t have time to make that drive between work and the wedding, but I live in Chicago. So I needed my car moved from Virginia beach to Chicago without me being in either location physically. I researched the options for shipment companies and read about all the nightmare scenarios that could happen. However, Sherpa was highly rated, reasonably priced, and easy to work with. I also felt secure in their guarantee that the amount wouldn`t change and they would front their own money to the drivers to make sure.”
“I called around to a few different places and Sherpa was the most reasonably priced. It was a quick and easy experience to process and to get everything done. It wasn`t a confusing situation because I know a lot of times there are a lot of details that go into it. With Sherpa, it was straightforward. I made the setup and I made the payment. My car got picked up in Virginia and I picked it up in Seattle, Washington. There was a little bit of confusion because I had a window and not an actual delivery time. What I thought was going to be the delivery time by what was estimated ended up not being the delivery time. There was a little bit of back and forth. I was trying to get the actual location because I ended up in traffic. The driver was willing to work with me and I met him at the location where he was supposed to pick up his next vehicle so he wouldn`t get behind schedule. That worked out great. In the end, I got my car sooner than I thought I was going to get. I was able to pay the rest of the fees upon retrieval of my vehicle. Everything went smoothly.”
“I transported my Prius from DC to San Diego. As this is my first time to use an auto transport service I was very leery and called a number of companies. From the Josh M at Sherpa was transparent with the process and was the only carrier who told me outright that the service will not be able to pick up in DC and that the handover was to happen in nearby Virginia. They were able to get a “spot” in Unified Auto Trans Corp and my car was transported without a hitch. Unified Auto Trans Corp was excellent! Sam the driver communicated well and gave important information. He was very thorough with the car inspection. Car arrived as expected.”
“Sherpa was a little bit cheaper than the other company we looked at. The representatives asked what we were looking for, and the make and model. They wanted to know where we wanted the car to go to and where is it being taken from. They explained they couldn`t go into heavy residential areas, gave us a quote, and followed up by text. The pick-up process was great. The guy texted before he arrived and told us how many minutes before he was going to get here. He came, grabbed the car, loaded it up, gave us a receipt, and he confirmed to make sure that the address that they had for the other end was accurate. The person who received the car on the other end said the car was still in excellent condition. Sherpa did everything I expected they would.”
“There was a lot going on with our move, but Sherpa communicated through emails. I also received a couple of phone calls to schedule the pick-up and then they provided me with basic instructions on shipping the vehicle and what`s not to leave in the car, and ship it on low tank of gas. They also communicated through text message once the driver picked up the car. Overall, I was really satisfied and they were accommodating. We didn`t have anybody to receive the vehicle once they got to Boise, and they couldn`t drop it off at our condo because of the trees. The large hauler could not go down the street with trees because the cars would get scratched. So the driver found a place off the interstate with a hotel, and I was able to call the hotel and pay a weekly parking rate. That was a helpful solution. Everything was cut-and-dry and successful and we were happy with their service.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Blacksburg, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Virginia. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
