Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Virginia customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“They explained the timeline of how much I owed at each stage, such as locking in the rate and getting the driver. When the driver arrived to get the car, I wasn`t present, but I felt secure because he took sooo many photos and videos of the car, along with a very thorough review. He got the car to Chicago ahead of schedule and dropped it off with my roommate. He even came back after he left to help her take the emergency brake off. I can`t recommend Sherpa and this driver enough! Please choose them, especially if you have a complicated situation or want to feel taken care of!”

Google
★★★★★

“Sherpa was on point and on task. I was previously dealing with another auto transport service (RoadRunner Transport) who essentially left me high and dry with no communication the day before my scheduled pickup. I contacted the good folks at Sherpa “Jessica†and they Not only provided excellent customer service, they actually did what they said they would do. My car arrived 2 hours after I did traveling from Virginia to Texas. Can’t beat that with a bat!!! Kudos to them and the driver who transported my vehicles.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa is an awesome transport company. I recommend them highly. They were very helpful in answering all my many questions and patient as I called back several times. I had a vehicle transported from Virginia to Upper Michigan. The driver kept in touch with pick up and delivery times and the vehicle arrived in exactly the same condition as when it left. The picture was taken at delivery. I would use them again, if the need arises.”

Factors that affect Virginia Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location
Pickup Window
Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to and from Virginia. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the per-mile rate often decreases for longer trips.
  • Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport in Virginia. Enclosed carriers offer extra protection but are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Location Accessibility: Shipping to urban areas like Richmond or Northern Virginia is typically cheaper than to rural locations. Consider meeting the carrier in a more accessible area to potentially reduce costs.
  • Seasonal Factors: Virginia’s diverse climate can affect car shipping prices. Summer is peak season, while winter weather, especially in mountainous regions, may impact transport times and costs.
  • Vehicle Specifications: The size, weight, and condition of your vehicle influence the shipping cost. Inoperable vehicles or those with low ground clearance may incur additional fees.
  • Timing Flexibility: A wider pickup window often results in lower prices. Rush or guaranteed delivery services will increase the cost of your Virginia car shipment.
  • Route Popularity: Shipping along major Virginia interstates like I-95, I-64, or I-81 can be more economical due to higher carrier availability and established routes.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from Virginia. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re considering enclosed transport for added protection, learn more about open vs. enclosed car shipping to determine the best option for your vehicle.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Virginia car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This gives carriers time to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple pickups in the same area.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is the most cost-effective option for most vehicles. While enclosed transport is necessary for some cars, open carriers offer more flexibility and lower rates.
  • Consider location: Discuss pickup and drop-off points with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors. Locations near major interstates like I-95, I-64, or I-81 can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your rate.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates. Consider terminal locations in major Virginia cities like Richmond, Norfolk, or Alexandria for potentially lower costs.
  • Opt for off-peak seasons: If possible, schedule your car transport outside of peak moving seasons. Virginia’s mild climate allows for year-round shipping, but avoiding summer months may result in better rates.

How does Virginia Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process to or from Virginia can be smooth sailing with the right approach. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you transport your vehicle with ease:

  • Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable auto transport company. This will give you a clear idea of costs and options.
  • Book your shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car shipping dates. Remember, Virginia’s weather can be unpredictable, so consider enclosed transport during harsh winter months or scorching summers.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Clean your car thoroughly and document any existing damage. Remove personal items and ensure your gas tank is no more than a quarter full. For a comprehensive checklist, check out our guide on how to ship a car.
  • Meet the carrier: On pickup day, you’ll meet the driver to hand over your keys and perform an inspection. If you’re shipping to northern Virginia, be aware that traffic around the DC area can cause delays.
  • Track your shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its journey. Your vehicle will likely travel along I-95, I-64, or I-81, depending on its destination within Virginia.
  • Receive your vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car again and sign the bill of lading. If you’re moving to coastal areas like Virginia Beach, check for any salt air exposure during transport.

By following these steps, you’ll ensure a smooth car shipping experience to or from the Old Dominion state. Whether you’re relocating to the bustling Northern Virginia suburbs or the serene Shenandoah Valley, professional auto transport services can make your move stress-free. Remember, Virginia’s diverse landscape, from mountains to beaches, means your car might encounter various conditions during transport, so choose a reliable car shipping company that understands the state’s unique challenges.

Virginia Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to or from Virginia, it’s crucial to understand the state’s unique vehicle requirements and regulations. Virginia uses E-ZPass for electronic toll collection, so if you’re moving away, remember to remove your transponder to avoid unexpected charges. For those moving to Virginia, you can easily obtain an E-ZPass online or at various retail locations.

Virginia requires annual vehicle safety inspections, so factor this into your plans when relocating. The vehicle registration process in Virginia is straightforward: you’ll need to provide proof of ownership, a valid ID, and complete the necessary forms at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). New residents have 30 days to register their vehicles.

When settling in Virginia, you’ll need to set up utilities. Dominion Energy is the primary electricity provider for much of the state, while water services are typically managed by local municipalities. For internet, providers like Verizon Fios, Cox, and Xfinity are widely available.

Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll your children in local schools. Virginia’s public libraries offer free library cards to residents, providing access to a wealth of resources.

If you’re leaving Virginia, remember to cancel local memberships and forward your mail through the USPS.

When planning your car transport to Virginia, consider the state’s diverse climate. Summers can be hot and humid, while winters may bring snow, especially in mountainous regions. Ensure your car shipping service is prepared for these conditions.

Virginia’s extensive highway system, including I-95, I-64, and I-81, makes it accessible for auto transport companies. However, be aware that traffic can be heavy around major cities like Richmond, Norfolk, and the Washington D.C. metro area.

By understanding these local nuances, you’ll be well-prepared for a smooth transition when shipping your car to or from Virginia.

Virginia Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Virginia?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Virginia. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Virginia?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Virginia?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Virginia?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Virginia

When planning car shipping to or from Virginia, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse seasonal weather patterns. Virginia experiences all four seasons, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.

In winter, snowfall can impact Virginia car shipping services. If you’re shipping during this time:

  • Remove snow tires or chains before transport
  • Ensure pickup/drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping
  • Avoid storing liquids that may freeze and expand in your vehicle

Spring and fall are ideal for shipping a car in Virginia, with mild temperatures and less extreme weather. However, be aware of occasional heavy rains that may cause delays.

During summer, high temperatures can affect your car transport experience:

  • Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior
  • Remove heat-sensitive items from the vehicle
  • Consider shipping during early morning or evening to avoid peak heat

Beyond weather, other factors influence Virginia auto transport timing:

  • College towns: Avoid shipping during move-in/move-out periods
  • Military bases: Be aware of training cycles that may increase demand
  • Tourist seasons: Summer can be busy for coastal areas

By considering these factors, you can ensure a smoother experience when using car shipping services in Virginia. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on seasonal considerations and optimal shipping times.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Virginia

When considering car shipping to Virginia for college, it’s crucial to understand each university’s parking policies. Most Virginia universities require students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. For instance, at the University of Virginia, students must obtain a permit to park on campus, with rates varying based on location and duration. Virginia Tech offers different parking options, including commuter and resident passes, but spaces can be limited.

Many off-campus apartments near Virginia universities provide parking, but it’s essential to confirm this before signing a lease. For on-campus housing, parking availability can vary widely between institutions. Students should check with their specific school for details.

When it comes to long-term parking during breaks, some Virginia universities offer designated storage lots. However, it’s advisable to explore car shipping services for extended periods, especially during harsh winter months. Virginia’s climate can be unpredictable, so students should consider all-season tires for safety.

Before relocating, students should verify their insurance coverage and roadside assistance plans are valid in Virginia. Many auto transport companies offer door-to-door service, making it convenient to ship a car directly to campus. This option can be particularly helpful for out-of-state students or those without time for a long drive.

Remember, each Virginia university has unique policies, so always check the official school website or contact the parking services department for the most up-to-date information before making any decisions about bringing a car to campus.

Military Personnel Icon

Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Virginia

Virginia is home to several military installations, making it a crucial hub for service members relocating with their vehicles. Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County and Naval Station Norfolk are two major bases in the area. Most bases offer on-site parking, but it’s wise to check with your specific installation for details. Some bases may require special vehicle registration or decals, so be sure to inquire about these requirements before your move.

Neighborhoods surrounding military bases in Virginia often have ample street parking, but it’s always best to verify local regulations. Many areas near bases are military-friendly, with resources like commissaries, exchanges, and family support centers readily available. These can be invaluable for newly relocated service members and their families.

When planning your move to Virginia, consider using a reliable car shipping service to transport your vehicle. This can ease the stress of a long-distance relocation, especially if you’re deployed or have multiple vehicles. Sherpa Auto Transport understands the unique needs of military personnel and offers a $50 military discount as a token of appreciation for your service.

Remember, Virginia car shipping can be particularly busy during peak PCS seasons. It’s advisable to book your auto transport well in advance to ensure timely delivery of your vehicle. Whether you’re headed to Norfolk, Quantico, or any other military installation in Virginia, a reputable car shipping company can help make your transition smoother. Thank you for your service, and welcome to the great state of Virginia!

Reviews from our Virginia Customers

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Virginia customers:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I called around to a few different places and Sherpa was the most reasonably priced. It was a quick and easy experience to process and to get everything done. It wasn’t a confusing situation because I know a lot of times there are a lot of details that go into it. With Sherpa, it was straightforward. I made the setup and I made the payment. My car got picked up in Virginia and I picked it up in Seattle, Washington. There was a little bit of confusion because I had a window and not an actual delivery time. What I thought was going to be the delivery time by what was estimated ended up not being the delivery time. There was a little bit of back and forth. I was trying to get the actual location because I ended up in traffic. The driver was willing to work with me and I met him at the location where he was supposed to pick up his next vehicle so he wouldn’t get behind schedule. That worked out great. In the end, I got my car sooner than I thought I was going to get. I was able to pay the rest of the fees upon retrieval of my vehicle. Everything went smoothly.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa was a little bit cheaper than the other company we looked at. The representatives asked what we were looking for, and the make and model. They wanted to know where we wanted the car to go to and where is it being taken from. They explained they couldn’t go into heavy residential areas, gave us a quote, and followed up by text. The pick-up process was great. The guy texted before he arrived and told us how many minutes before he was going to get here. He came, grabbed the car, loaded it up, gave us a receipt, and he confirmed to make sure that the address that they had for the other end was accurate. The person who received the car on the other end said the car was still in excellent condition. Sherpa did everything I expected they would.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“Everything went very smooth. They found me a driver very fast for my 2018 jaguar fpace. I did an open carry car transport from Virginia across country and their service was excellent. The price was right in between two other quotes that I received so it was perfect for me. Car was delivered on time with no damages! Thank you Sherpa Auto Transport!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa truck Car Transport took our car from Tucson Arizona to Norfolk Virginia. The car was delivered on time. No damage occurred to the car. It was open transporting. The driver came exactly to our house and delivered exactly to our home here in Virginia. We were extremely satisfied with the service and quality of transport.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa gave me a date range and they made it within the range. It was the last day of the range, but they were able to lock in within a day or two of the last day of the range. They told me it would be two to five days, but I got the car the next day from when they picked it up. They picked it up around Washington, DC area and dropped it off in Atlanta. My son was at the pick-up. He said they walked around the car and they took pictures of any dings and dents. It was a pretty seamless process. Once the car was in motion, I had no contact with the courier. During the drop-off, they were able to get to my neighborhood. The problem is, in our neighborhood, they’re relocating some water mains and some sewer lines. So, there are streets that are absolutely closed off, and the navigation system that the driver was using didn’t have that information. So, he got stuck behind a closed street. It was easier for him to just unload the car on a regular street, and then just drive it to the house and my wife took him back to his truck. According to the pictures my son sent me, the car was the exact same as when he picked it up. Sherpa guaranteed the price and we Venmoed the delivery driver and it was the exact same price.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Virginia, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Virginia. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
