Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.

  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Google
★★★★★

“Sherpa did a great job with the transport, they are a broker which I think is obvious from the other reviews so you are really reviewing the subcontractors they work with. In my case, Cardinal Transport who did fine transporting my Tesla from Salt Lake City to Washington, DC. They weren’t the cheapest but you get what you pay for, car arrived on time and undamaged with nothing more than some expected road dirt on it.”

Google
★★★★★

“I am so glad Sherpa was the company I selected. The car was shipped from Cleveland to Salt Lake City in two days…two days! Ivan was so professional! Great job!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Everybody at Sherpa Auto Transport was very knowledgeable. Any questions I had were answered. I live in a gated community. The driver couldn’t get through to the front gate. But he sent me pictures of where he was, which was at the back gate. So, I went out and met him. He took the car out of the trailer, followed me around to the front gate and delivered. It went very quickly and smoothly.”

Salt Lake City, Utah Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Salt Lake City?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Salt Lake City. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Salt Lake City?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Salt Lake City?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Salt Lake City?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Salt Lake City

When planning car shipping to or from Salt Lake City, UT, it’s crucial to consider the city’s unique seasonal weather patterns. Salt Lake City experiences all four seasons distinctly, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.

In winter, Salt Lake City car shipping requires extra precautions. Heavy snowfall and icy conditions are common from November to March. If you’re shipping a car during this time:

  • Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t ship vehicles with these attached.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping in icy conditions.
  • Avoid leaving items that could freeze and expand in the vehicle.

Summer brings its own considerations for car transport in Salt Lake City. With temperatures often exceeding 90°F (32°C) from June to August:

  • Place a sunshade in your vehicle to protect the interior from intense heat.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items that could melt or warp.

When scheduling your Salt Lake City auto transport, be mindful of peak seasons. The city sees increased demand for car shipping services during:

  • Late August and early January, coinciding with university move-in dates.
  • Summer months, when tourism peaks and many residents relocate.

To secure better rates and ensure timely service, consider booking your car shipping a few weeks before or after these peak periods. By factoring in Salt Lake City’s climate and seasonal events, you can ensure a smooth and efficient auto transport experience to or from this vibrant Utah city.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Salt Lake City, Utah

When considering car shipping to Salt Lake City for university, it’s crucial to plan ahead. Most colleges in the area, including the University of Utah, require parking permits for on-campus parking. These permits are often limited and in high demand, so apply early. Many off-campus apartments offer parking, but always confirm before signing a lease. For winter breaks, some universities provide long-term parking options, but space is limited. Remember, Salt Lake City experiences heavy snowfall, so winter tires are a must. If you’re shipping a car to Salt Lake City for school, consider timing it with the academic calendar. Lastly, verify that your auto insurance and roadside assistance coverage are valid in Utah. Planning these details in advance will make your transition to college life smoother, allowing you to focus on your studies rather than car transport logistics.

“Writing a review because I relied heavily on these while deciding which broker company to go with to find someone to transport my car from Utah to Michigan. Some background information…I am a gal in my early 20`s that has NO IDEA how these things work. So if you are in the same position as me, this review is for you haha. I first decided to go through with another company who ended up not being authorized which made me extremely nervous while looking for a new company. I found Sherpa on Forbes and after reading the reviews and seeing that if the car doesn`t get picked up by a driver towards the end of the 5 day period you agree on, they contribute their own money, I decided to go through with Sherpa. One thing I learned is to never put down a down payment with a broker. This is apparently a sketchy practice. Sherpa DOES ask for a card to be on file, but they DO NOT charge it until they find someone to pick up your car. In my case, they contributed $150 of the $300 broker fee towards the payment for the actual driver so I ended up paying Sherpa $150 dollars. I will say, I was nervous that my car wouldn`t get picked up within the 5 day time period, but Sherpa found a driver on the 4th day and it was picked up that same day. They stayed in communication with the company that transported my car the entire way. I would 100% use Sherpa again in the future if I need to transport my car somewhere.”

“Sherpa found a good driver for us who picked up and delivered our cars within the quoted time frames. The cars arrived with no damage or scratches or anything. We shipped two Subarus from southern Utah to Washington state. Sherpa offers a military discount and a clean car refund, which I appreciate. Additionally, they also allowed us to ship 100 pounds of belongings in each of the vehicles. I would use Sherpa again if I need to ship cars within the US.”

“The auto transportation business is fraught with shady companies and bad reviews. After reading so many negative reviews about their competitors I was pretty nervous about the entire process but after stumbling upon Sherpa and reading their BBB reviews I took the plunge. They average 4.7/5 on their reviews. Even the few negative reviews on the BBB website were counterbalanced by excellent follow up by management. I was shipping my father`s car from Utah to New Hampshire. From start to finish they did what they said they would do from the initial contact to the reach out from the driver right through to the follow up after delivery. I was thoroughly impressed with the entire process. The feather in the cap though was getting a $20 credit on a car wash after delivery.”

Consumer Affairs

“We had Sherpa transport a car from Salt Lake City to Northern Kentucky. We couldn`t communicate with the driver. I had to call the office of the trucking company, and he was able to give me updates. Overall, they did a good job. They did show up ahead of the scheduled time that they said that they would pick up the car, which created a little bit of a problem but they overcame that because the driver just had to wait around until the car was ready for pickup. They had to bleed the brakes on it. It was somewhat negligent on the part of the place that had my car, and somewhat negligent on the driver`s part, because he came before he said he would. Other than that, everything went great. We would use Sherpa again.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Salt Lake City, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Utah. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]

  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel.
