When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Salt Lake City Car Shipping Prices
- Distance and Route: The distance between pickup and drop-off locations significantly affects car shipping costs to and from Salt Lake City. Routes along major highways like I-15 and I-80 are typically more cost-effective due to their accessibility.
- Seasonal Factors: Salt Lake City’s weather can impact car shipping prices. Winter snow and icy conditions may increase costs due to potential delays and the need for specialized equipment. Summer is often busier for auto transport, which can also affect pricing.
- Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your vehicle influence shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in Salt Lake City due to the mountainous terrain, may cost more to transport than smaller cars.
- Transport Method: Open carriers are the most economical and widely used option for car shipping to Salt Lake City. Enclosed transport, while more expensive and potentially slower, offers added protection for high-value or classic vehicles against Utah’s varied weather conditions.
- Pickup and Delivery Locations: Urban areas in Salt Lake City, like downtown or near the airport, are typically easier and cheaper to access than remote locations in the surrounding mountains or rural areas.
- Timing and Flexibility: Being flexible with your pickup and delivery dates can lead to more competitive car shipping rates. Rush or guaranteed delivery services to Salt Lake City will generally cost more.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. If your car isn’t running, inform your auto transport company as it may require special equipment for loading and unloading in Salt Lake City.
Understanding these factors can help you plan your car shipping to or from Salt Lake City more effectively. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Salt Lake City car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open shipping is typically more cost-effective than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates while still providing reliable car shipping services.
- Strategic pickup/drop-off locations: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major interstates like I-15 or I-80. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues. Car shipping companies aren’t responsible for items left in the vehicle.
- Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Salt Lake City auto transport. Consider weekday shipping, which may be less expensive than weekends.
- Consider seasonal timing: Utah’s weather can impact car shipping costs. Summer months often see increased demand and higher prices, while winter weather may cause delays. Plan accordingly to optimize your car transport experience.

How does Salt Lake City Car Shipping Work?
Navigating the car shipping process in Salt Lake City, UT, requires careful planning and consideration of the unique local conditions. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you ship your vehicle to or from the Crossroads of the West:
1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free instant quote from Sherpa Auto Transport. This will give you a clear idea of the costs involved in shipping your car to or from Salt Lake City.
2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa.
3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the pickup date, thoroughly clean and inspect your car. Remove personal items and ensure your vehicle is in good working condition. In Salt Lake City’s variable climate, it’s crucial to check your antifreeze levels and battery condition.
4. Consider Local Factors: Salt Lake City experiences all four seasons, so consider the time of year when shipping. Winter snow can affect transport times, especially on major routes like I-15 and I-80. During summer, high temperatures might necessitate enclosed transport for luxury or classic vehicles.
5. Meet the Carrier: Sherpa provides door-to-door service, but be prepared for potential restrictions in downtown Salt Lake City or in narrow suburban streets. You might need to arrange an alternative pickup/drop-off location.
6. Track Your Shipment: While your vehicle is in transit, Sherpa will keep you updated on its progress.
7. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly. Salt Lake City’s dry climate means dust accumulation is common during transport, so don’t be alarmed by a light coating.

Salt Lake City Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When relocating to or from Salt Lake City, UT, there are several important factors to consider regarding your vehicle and the moving process. For car shipping and auto transport needs, it’s crucial to be aware of local regulations and requirements.
Utah has specific vehicle registration laws. New residents must register their vehicles within 60 days of establishing residency. The process involves a safety inspection, emissions test (in Salt Lake County), and providing proof of ownership and insurance. It’s advisable to complete these steps promptly to avoid penalties.
Salt Lake City experiences significant seasonal changes, which can affect car transport. During winter, snow tires or chains may be required on certain roads. If you’re shipping a car to Salt Lake City in winter, consider having these items ready upon arrival.
For those moving away and using car shipping services, remember to:
- Cancel local memberships (gyms, clubs)
- Forward your mail to your new address
- Return any library books and cancel your card
- Notify your children’s school of the move
When settling in Salt Lake City, you’ll need to set up utilities. Rocky Mountain Power provides electricity, while Salt Lake City Public Utilities handles water services. For internet, major providers include Xfinity and CenturyLink.
Parking in Salt Lake City can be challenging in some areas. Consider applying for a residential parking permit if you’ll be living in a permitted area. This can be done through the city’s Transportation Division.
Finally, when using Salt Lake City car shipping or auto transport services, ensure your vehicle is prepared for the journey. Remove personal items, disable the alarm system, and keep only a quarter tank of gas. This will help make your car transport experience smooth and efficient.
Salt Lake City, Utah Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Salt Lake City?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Salt Lake City. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Salt Lake City?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Salt Lake City?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Salt Lake City?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

When planning car shipping to or from Salt Lake City, UT, it’s crucial to consider the city’s unique seasonal climate. Salt Lake City experiences all four seasons distinctly, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.
In winter, Salt Lake City car shipping can be challenging due to heavy snowfall. If you’re shipping a car during this season:
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport
- Ensure pickup/drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent icy slips
- Avoid storing liquids that might freeze and expand in your vehicle
Summer in Salt Lake City can be quite hot. When using car shipping services during warmer months:
- Place a sunshade in your car to protect the interior
- Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt
- Consider shipping during early morning or evening to avoid peak heat
Beyond weather, timing is crucial for efficient car transport in Salt Lake City. The city hosts several universities, so auto transport demand spikes at the beginning and end of academic terms. If possible, schedule your car shipping a few weeks before or after these peak times to avoid higher rates and longer wait times.
Salt Lake City is also a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. If you’re shipping a car for a ski trip, book your transport well in advance of the busy winter season. By planning ahead and considering these factors, you can ensure a smooth and cost-effective experience when using a car shipping company in Salt Lake City, UT.
Car Shipping for College Students in Salt Lake City, Utah
When considering car shipping to Salt Lake City for university, it’s crucial to plan ahead. Most universities in the area, including the University of Utah and Westminster College, require parking permits for on-campus parking. For winter breaks, some universities provide long-term parking options, but space is limited. Remember, Salt Lake City’s winter weather can be harsh, so equip your car with snow tires if you’re driving locally. Before using auto transport services to ship your car, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to Utah. Lastly, consider the cost-benefit of bringing a car versus using public transportation, as Salt Lake City has an extensive bus and light rail system. Planning these details in advance will ensure a smoother transition when you ship a car to Salt Lake City for your college experience.

Reviews from our Utah Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Utah customers:
“Writing a review because I relied heavily on these while deciding which broker company to go with to find someone to transport my car from Utah to Michigan. Some background information…I am a gal in my early 20`s that has NO IDEA how these things work. So if you are in the same position as me, this review is for you haha. I first decided to go through with another company who ended up not being authorized which made me extremely nervous while looking for a new company. I found Sherpa on Forbes and after reading the reviews and seeing that if the car doesn`t get picked up by a driver towards the end of the 5 day period you agree on, they contribute their own money, I decided to go through with Sherpa. One thing I learned is to never put down a down payment with a broker. This is apparently a sketchy practice. Sherpa DOES ask for a card to be on file, but they DO NOT charge it until they find someone to pick up your car. In my case, they contributed $150 of the $300 broker fee towards the payment for the actual driver so I ended up paying Sherpa $150 dollars. I will say, I was nervous that my car wouldn`t get picked up within the 5 day time period, but Sherpa found a driver on the 4th day and it was picked up that same day. They stayed in communication with the company that transported my car the entire way. I would 100% use Sherpa again in the future if I need to transport my car somewhere.”

“Sherpa found a good driver for us who picked up and delivered our cars within the quoted time frames. The cars arrived with no damage or scratches or anything. We shipped two Subarus from southern Utah to Washington state. Sherpa offers a military discount and a clean car refund, which I appreciate. Additionally, they also allowed us to ship 100 pounds of belongings in each of the vehicles. I would use Sherpa again if I need to ship cars within the US.”
“Sherpa was on time when they picked up my vehicle in Layton, Utah and it only took them three days to deliver it here in South Carolina. During the transport, the driver called and texted. And when he got here, we weren`t here yet. I gave him my daughter and son-in-law`s phone number, so he got ahold of them and got the car delivered. The overall experience was great and it was a fair price.”
“This is the third time I`ve used Sherpa. The first gentleman I talked to seemed genuine and knew what he was talking about. And I had a good experience the first time. So, the second time, I didn`t do research. I just used Sherpa. The same thing with the third time. The guys did all the work and called me. One of the times, I had to switch days so that was a bit difficult for Sherpa people. But it was still handled very well. The first time, the gentleman didn`t speak English well. But it was still handled good. The last two drivers kept me posted when they would arrive. And it was handled very well.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Salt Lake City, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Utah. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
