Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Wichita Falls customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The Sherpa representative was great. When she said she was gonna call me, she called me. And when she said she was gonna email me information, she did. Compared to the last three experiences I had, it was the best. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, thinking this could be a big pain in the neck, but it didn’t and they were really good. The quote was really high, but they were competitive. From what I’ve read, if you’re not charged enough, then a transport company will not take the car. It’s a very touch-and-go business and there’s not a lot of regulation. So if they can make more money taking another car, they’ll do it. But at the time the vehicles were delivered, the price did not fluctuate from their original quote.”

Google
★★★★★

“I had a very good experience with Sherpa and Kate! I had booked with another highly rated autotransporter in early December for a January 3rd move from Texas to San Diego, and the car had to be there no later than January 9th. Several days before the scheduled pickup, there was still no carrier selected and daily chats just kept saying they would update me when a carrier was selected. On January 3rd, I was told they could meet the delivery deadlines.”

“I had my daughters car transported from SA, Texas to Idaho and Sherpa is THE BEST!!! Always friendly, informative, and TOP NOTCH customer service!!! The company that they got to transport the car was equally amazing! The gentleman from Horizon Carriers had excellent communication, showed up when he said he would, and was detailed in checking out the car. The car left TX on a Monday at about 9:45 pm and arrived in N. Idaho on Wednesday at about 3:45 pm!”

Factors that affect Wichita Falls Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Wichita Falls, TX. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, as more fuel and time are required for transport.
  • Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to Wichita Falls. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers protection from harsh Texas weather and road debris for high-value vehicles.
  • Location Accessibility: Wichita Falls’ proximity to major highways like US-287 and I-44 can help reduce shipping costs. Rural areas outside the city may incur additional fees due to limited access.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as trucks or SUVs, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Seasonal Factors: Auto transport to Wichita Falls may be pricier during peak seasons like summer or around holidays. The city’s hot summers and occasional severe weather can also influence shipping rates.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship as they can be driven onto the carrier. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the cost.
  • Flexibility: Being flexible with pickup and delivery dates can lead to more competitive rates for car shipping to or from Wichita Falls.

Understanding these factors can help you estimate the cost of shipping your car to or from Wichita Falls, TX. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your car shipment at least two weeks in advance. This increases the chances of carriers bundling your vehicle with others in Wichita Falls, potentially lowering costs.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping offers the lowest rates and greatest flexibility for negotiating prices. It’s suitable for most vehicles, though enclosed transport may be necessary for specialty cars.
  • Optimize pickup/dropoff locations: Consult with Sherpa advisers to find locations near major interstates like I-44 or US-287. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues. Car shipping companies aren’t responsible for items left in vehicles.
  • Be flexible with dates: The more flexible you are with pickup and delivery dates, the more options you’ll have. This flexibility can lead to better pricing for your Wichita Falls car shipping needs.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport rates can fluctuate based on season. If possible, avoid peak moving times like summer for potentially lower rates when shipping a car to or from Wichita Falls, TX.

Wichita Falls, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Wichita Falls?

In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Wichita Falls?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Wichita Falls?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Wichita Falls?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. “We had a field vehicle that needed to be moved from one project location to another. The transport was from Corpus Christi to El Paso. I got quotes from four or five different logistics companies. Sherpa was one of the cheapest and I wanted to go with them because they offered $300 to cover any unexpected fees from the driver. Every single one of those other logistics carrier companies was calling me and emailing me nonstop saying that Sherpa wouldn’t do it and that they weren’t going to get somebody for that price. But Sherpa ended up meeting our expectations at the price I was quoted and not a dollar more. I emailed every one of those other companies back and said, “Thanks for your scare tactics, but they got it done at the price quoted. Don’t contact me again.” Every other company I dealt with felt like a used car salesman type of situation. But Sherpa was really professional and not pushy.”

“My youngest was in college in Michigan and a family that had befriended him had fallen on hard times. Their daughter was his roommate and she needed a car for her summer work program because she had to drive to get this internship. I just bought a new car and I had my old one that was still in very good shape. I didn’t need it and I don’t really need the money for it. I said that I’d give it to her but I couldn’t drive it up there. I was already going to fly it there to help him move. I found Sherpa and they had a really nice arrangement where we paid an upfront cost for them to find a driver and she just had to pay the driver. It was a really good thing for me because I wanted her commitment to pay something for the vehicle. It was a reasonable amount. That worked out really well for me. Sherpa was very helpful and easy to communicate with. The driver was very polite, courteous, and prompt. He got here on time and called me. He dropped off the vehicle and it was fine. I was very happy with the service. It was my first-time experience transporting a vehicle. I did it online and Sherpa came back promptly with a good price. I had contacted four other companies and some of them didn’t even respond. The ones that did were very, “Well, we’ll let you know,” that kind of thing. Sherpa was very good at getting me a price, “This is what it’s gonna cost.” It was getting closer to the deadline and they’d given me a window and they were still within the window. It was just so much was going on so I was a little nervous. I called Sherpa and at the time, you get an answering service thing because they get a lot of calls. I didn’t have time to wait. They called me right back and said, “We still haven’t found a driver for you, but we’ll get you something right now.” They didn’t realize I was anxious. They had a lot of information on their website. They were very prompt and they allayed my fears and said, “We haven’t found anyone yet, but if you need a name right now, we’ll get you one.” It worked out really well. In the payment way, the driver that they got wanted a little more cash so they reduced their fee that they would take from my card. But the problem was the young lady that was receiving the car only had so much cash and she’s a student. I said, “Well, look, can I just pay that difference to the driver upfront?” They said that was fine. When the driver came, I said, “I’ll give you the cash and then you can just email that you got the money.” He sent me a text that this was received so I had a record. That made me feel comfortable that he received that cash. When he arrived, he just took the additional cash from the young lady I was sending the car to. They were flexible and honest about the transaction. I would encourage people to use Sherpa. To drive the car would have cost me just as much money with hotel stays and gas. The stress would have been so much more too. You have to drive it 1,800 miles for three days and it would have been terrible. Sherpa delivered the car right when they said they were going to deliver it.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I found Sherpa very open and honest about the entire process, how they find drivers, what kind of insurance they have, what to expect, and what to watch out for. I like that they were very upfront with me about everything. Also, the rep was very patient in answering all my questions. I reserved a date but I told them I wasn’t sure what my exact date would be. I wanted a week to week flexibility so they did that. They put it on hold so they wouldn’t find a driver till I was ready to ship the car. The pickup and delivery were very smooth. The driver called us and told me when he got delayed a little because of traffic. He texted me several times to tell me how far he was. He couldn’t drive up right to my house because of the trees that we have and he told me that he didn’t want to risk the cars getting scratched, which was very nice. I appreciated that. We found a place where it was open and he could pull up without causing damage to anything. It was pretty well-organized and he knew what he was doing. He did the walkthrough with me, all of the pre-conditions when he picked up and then when he dropped off. It was a good experience.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa had one of the easiest websites to navigate, and then they recognized right away that with my vehicle, they couldn’t give me a quote online. They told me to call. Other websites gave me a quote and then changed it later because they realized the dimensions are not quite the same. So, I appreciated the straightforwardness of Sherpa. It was super easy to schedule a pickup. My car got there in less time than I thought it would take, and then my parents on the other end said it was really easy to pick it up and it was painless. So, everything was pretty easy. Communication with the driver was not too much, thank goodness, because I wouldn’t have wanted too much either. He called me when he was about an hour away, and then he called me when he arrived. Then, on the other end, he called my parents when he was about an hour away. He got there the night before, so he called my mom the next morning and my mom was able to go and pick it up that morning at her convenience. Overall, Sherpa was easy to book and there weren’t any surprises. Everything was very clear and straightforward and I’d use Sherpa again.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Wichita Falls, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
