Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Tyler, TX significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Tyler. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against East Texas weather conditions, including occasional severe thunderstorms.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as trucks or SUVs popular in Tyler, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Route Accessibility: Tyler’s proximity to major highways like I-20 and US-69 can help reduce costs. However, shipping to more remote areas of East Texas may incur additional fees.
  • Seasonal Demand: Auto transport prices in Tyler can fluctuate with seasonal trends. Summer months and January often see higher rates due to increased demand.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Opting for a flexible 5-day pickup window is usually the most cost-effective. Expedited shipping to or from Tyler will increase the price but may be necessary during time-sensitive moves.
  • Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship as they require special equipment for loading and unloading. Ensure your car is in running condition to avoid additional fees.

Understanding these factors can help you manage your auto transport costs when shipping a car to or from Tyler, TX. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Tyler car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping is the most cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Tyler, TX. It offers greater flexibility and lower rates compared to enclosed carriers.
  • Pick strategic locations: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find pickup/dropoff points near major highways like I-20 or US-69. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Tyler car shipping needs. Flexibility in locations can also lead to cost savings.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport rates may vary based on the time of year. If possible, avoid peak moving seasons for potentially lower prices when shipping a car to or from Tyler.

Tyler, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Tyler?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Tyler. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Tyler?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Tyler?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Tyler?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. “This was the first time I used car shipping service. After some research I decided to get quote from two auto transport companies. The other company was much larger than Sherpa. I ended up choosing Sherpa because they guaranteed that my car could be picked up by the deadline I had and I was impressed by their service attitude. Dillano, the sales representative, was very helpful. I booked the service at around the close of the business day, and to my surprise, they notified me at around 10 am the next morning that a driver had been secured to pick up the car later that day or the following day. When my nephew had a little trouble getting in touch with the driver to arrange the pick-up, I emailed Sherpa. Within a few minutes, the driver contacted us. Sherpa called me soon after to make sure that the driver did contact us after they reached out to him. After that everything went very smoothly. I got several emails from Sherpa during the process reminding me to examine the car carefully during pickup and drop off. The car was delivered to me without any problem. I was extremely happy with the service and would highly recommend Sherpa.”

“I had my daughters car transported from SA, Texas to Idaho and Sherpa is THE BEST!!! Always friendly, informative, and TOP NOTCH customer service!!! The company that they got to transport the car was equally amazing! The gentleman from Horizon Carriers had excellent communication, showed up when he said he would, and was detailed in checking out the car. The car left TX on a Monday at about 9:45 pm and arrived in N. Idaho on Wednesday at about 3:45 pm! The carrier was friendly and customer service was excellent! The street where he picked up the car was too narrow for his truck, so he parked the truck, walked to the pick up address, checked out the car, filled out the BOL and drive by daughter’s car to the truck and loaded it! Great work Horizon Carriers and superb vetting process on the part of Sherpa Auto Transport for choosing only the best of the best for their customers! This was our first time transporting a car so we were nervous, but Sherpa made it a truly stress-free experience!!! Thank you for caring about your customers and putting their needs first!”

“My experience was great start to finish. There was a miscommunication error, but it was an easy fix. I started researching about 6 weeks before my move. I was connected with Scott who explained the process to me. I took the info and compared with other companies. Sherpa stood out with the price guarantee and great reviews so they were my choice. I submitted my credit card info to hold and then I received a call about 48 before the beginning of my transport window. They let me know that a driver had accepted my bid and that I would get another call about 24 hours prior to transport. I got the call and they picked up my car the next day. I was moving from KY to TX the next day. To my surprise they said the car would arrive in Texas the next day. I expected it to take a few days. I landed in Texas the next morning and as I was leaving the airport in an Uber, my phone rings saying that my car had been unloaded and the driver was waiting on me. How in the world?! My car left KY at 4pm and was in TX at 10am the next morning. The car actually got there before I did. The driver was great, customer service was great, my overall experience was great. I highly recommend Sherpa.”

“I had a very good experience with Sherpa and Kate! I had booked with another highly rated autotransporter in early December for a January 3rd move from Texas to San Diego, and the car had to be there no later than January 9th. Several days before the scheduled pickup, there was still no carrier selected and daily chats just kept saying they would update me when a carrier was selected. On January 3rd, I was told they could meet the delivery deadlines. I called several other companies only to hear the same thing, that they could not guarantee shipping times. I decided to contact Sherpa as I had received a quote from them when I began to shop for auto transporters, but now I was desperate. The agent I dealt with from Sherpa was Kate and she had solutions not excuses. Yes, I did pay for expedited service, but she got a carrier assigned the same day and saved the day! The car was picked up on January 4th in Texas and it arrived ahead of schedule in San Diego on January 7th. I also want to leave positive comments on the carrier, New Day Inc. If you are fortunate enough to get Next Day, Inc. and Sergei as the driver, you will be in good hands. He arrived on time, sent me a detailed, inspection report and emailed an electronic Bill of Lading before driving away. When the car was delivered, I received the final electronic Bill of Lading before he pulled away in San Diego. Even the personal belongings that were packed in the trunk arrived safely. The service from Sherpa, Kate and Next Day, Inc was flawless. Thank you! Karen E”

“Sherpa had one of the easiest websites to navigate, and then they recognized right away that with my vehicle, they couldn’t give me a quote online. They told me to call. Other websites gave me a quote and then changed it later because they realized the dimensions are not quite the same. So, I appreciated the straightforwardness of Sherpa. It was super easy to schedule a pickup. My car got there in less time than I thought it would take, and then my parents on the other end said it was really easy to pick it up and it was painless. So, everything was pretty easy. Communication with the driver was not too much, thank goodness, because I wouldn’t have wanted too much either. He called me when he was about an hour away, and then he called me when he arrived. Then, on the other end, he called my parents when he was about an hour away. He got there the night before, so he called my mom the next morning and my mom was able to go and pick it up that morning at her convenience. Overall, Sherpa was easy to book and there weren’t any surprises. Everything was very clear and straightforward and I’d use Sherpa again.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Tyler, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping
