Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Tomball customers say about Sherpa:

Google
★★★★★

“I had a very good experience with Sherpa and Kate! I had booked with another highly rated autotransporter in early December for a January 3rd move from Texas to San Diego, and the car had to be there no later than January 9th. Several days before the scheduled pickup, there was still no carrier selected and daily chats just kept saying they would update me when a carrier was selected.”

Google
★★★★★

“I am truly grateful I found Sherpa Auto Transport. This was my first time arranging transportation and needless to say it was really overwhelming. I needed to transport two vehicles from Texas to Florida in a very short period of time and not only were they able to find a driver, the price was reasonable.”

Google
★★★★★

“I had my daughters car transported from SA, Texas to Idaho and Sherpa is THE BEST!!! Always friendly, informative, and TOP NOTCH customer service!!! The company that they got to transport the car was equally amazing! The gentleman from Horizon Carriers had excellent communication, showed up when he said he would, and was detailed in checking out the car.”

Factors that affect Tomball Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location
Pickup Window
Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The journey length significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Tomball, TX. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for Tomball auto transport. Enclosed trailers, while about 50% pricier and potentially slower, offer protection from Texas’s intense sun and occasional severe weather for high-value vehicles.
  • Location Accessibility: Tomball’s proximity to Houston and major highways like SH 249 and FM 2920 can help keep costs down. Rural pickups or deliveries may increase prices.
  • Seasonal Factors: Summer months and January typically see higher car shipping rates. Tomball’s mild winters can make off-season transport more feasible than in northern states.
  • Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Non-running cars require special equipment, increasing the price for Tomball car transport services.
  • Flexibility: A wider pickup window often results in lower costs. Rush or guaranteed delivery to Tomball will increase the price.
  • Market Conditions: Fuel prices and overall demand for auto transport in the Tomball area can influence shipping rates.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from Tomball, TX. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Tomball car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping is generally more affordable and flexible than enclosed transport, helping you negotiate better rates for your auto transport from Tomball, TX.
  • Optimize pickup/dropoff locations: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find convenient spots near major highways like I-45 or Highway 249. This can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your car shipping price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during the car transport process.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better options and potentially lower costs for shipping a car to or from Tomball.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer when demand for car shipping services is higher. Planning your Tomball auto transport during off-peak times may result in more competitive rates.

Tomball, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Tomball?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Tomball. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Tomball?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Tomball?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Tomball?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“We were moving from Chicago land area to LA so I needed to ship my car. I reached out to an open site, which gave me a million people. I started reading and they were just relentless. I was not moving for a while. I had no idea if it was gonna cost $1,000 to ship my car or $5,000. I was just trying to get estimates. My move was never an exact date to pick up the car. I was waiting on selling our house and a bunch of other things. I started to find someone again and Sherpa came up highly recommended. It had great reviews and a very competitive price. They didn`t inundate me. It was like, “When I figure it out, I`ll let you know.” Another issue was when we were moving and getting ourselves out here, we didn`t have an address because we didn`t find a house yet. Sherpa picked up the car and we didn`t even 100% know where we were looking to move to yet. That was pretty interesting. I had to update them. We were dealing with two people and they were fine. They understood and were very easy to talk to. Someone then called and said they were with Sherpa and were picking up the car. They were great. It took four days from start to finish. They even came in a day early than they said. The driver would text me every time like where he was gonna be, where he`s at now, and when he was gonna get there. He texted me the day before saying he was going to be in the vicinity at around X amount of time. It was perfect. The driver knew where we are going and dropping off my car was super easy. He was at the mall and it was great because he said he might be running late. I was having dinner with friends. I told the driver to let me know when he got there and I would run out and give him my keys. He kept me in the loop the entire time. We had snow so that was an issue. It was the same thing going in. We had to go a little further but it was not a big deal. He was right on like what time to pick up so that was fine. My husband said the car was gonna come washed but it didn`t. The car arrived really dirty but that didn`t bother me. I just did that drive so I understood. I was driving from Chicago to here. I went through a windstorm or tornadoes through Oklahoma, snow and fall staff, and a sandstorm somewhere in Texas. It definitely was a lot of debris. On the whole, call direct and book Sherpa. It was a no-brainer. You put your stuff in and they come.”

“I called Sherpa Auto Transport and I got somebody. It was a person who spoke English. That made me happy because I felt we were communicating. And we had a discussion. He told me how it all worked and how much it would cost. We talked about dates. And somehow they got back to me. They set it up. It was very smooth. They told me there would be a driver. Somebody said he would call. I got anxious about the whole thing. Because I`m in the middle of Manhattan. My car is in a garage. I can drive it where they need to. But how would I do it in the middle of Manhattan? The driver called me up and said, “I`ll be there in the blah, blah, minutes”. And I went over to the garage and got the car. And I thought, “What am I going to do? I`m going to have to park it somewhere. And then I`m gonna find a parking space.” It ended up being nothing at all. So, I waited on 55th Street. Second Avenue goes from one end of Manhattan all the way down to the other end. It goes from north to south. And he said, “I`ll meet you at 54th in a second. I`ll have my transport there.” I drove over there. And there he was with the transport. He got out. And we looked at the car. We had a chit-chat about it. And he said, “All right. See you later.” He got in the car. Drove it on the transport. I turned around, took a picture of it and left. The driver was a sweetheart. He picked the car up on a Friday. And it was delivered on a Tuesday. Whoever did it in Texas was a different person than I talked to, who was the ultimate driver. He called her a half an hour. He said he was 10 miles out. But she didn`t answer the phone. So, the driver called me. And I called her. And he called her. She lives in Austin, Texas. She lives more out in the suburbs. And she said, he didn`t want to bring it on her street because there were too many trees. She said, “I just jogged over to the, you know. It wasn`t very far.” She sent me a thing and said, “There`s this little ding here.” I said, “Oh, that`s an old one.” There was nothing. And he gave her the keys. She signed it, she gave him the check, and that was that. It was very smooth. They had their stuff together. The car got there in no time. Sherpa was great. Everybody was professional. I would recommend them.”

“My daughters go to school out of state and they need their cars at school. I’ve been transporting the cars back and forth for a couple of years and the first company I used did a great job. But they changed owners when I called them. Then I booked with another place but they called me two days before the pick-up date and said that they couldn’t pick the cars up for another week. So, that was a nightmare. And then I went with another transport and they fell through. So I went online and started looking at different transport companies and then got to Sherpa. And we had them ship a Volkswagen Beetle and a Mazda 3 from New Jersey to Texas. The Sherpa representative was great. When she said she was gonna call me, she called me. And when she said she was gonna email me information, she did. Compared to the last three experiences I had, it was the best. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, thinking this could be a big pain in the neck, but it didn’t and they were really good. The quote was really high, but they were competitive. From what I’ve read, if you’re not charged enough, then a transport company will not take the car. It’s a very touch-and-go business and there’s not a lot of regulation. So if they can make more money taking another car, they’ll do it. But at the time the vehicles were delivered, the price did not fluctuate from their original quote. The vehicles were delivered a couple of hours earlier. The driver was to drive the vehicles to a Walmart parking lot right off Interstate 35 because he thought that would be the easiest unloading, but then he called and said that Walmart would not let him in the parking lot. So he was at the gas station across the highway. My daughter went by herself and she had to get two cars. We were just gonna leave the cars in the parking lot at Walmart. But he drove her back and forth across the highway to help her out, which was very nice. He was very accommodating and perfectly willing to help her even though he had other things to do. I’ll use them again to get both cars back to Texas instead of driving and hopefully they’re around.”

“I’m in the military and I got stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. But I had a family in North Carolina and I was shipping my 2006 Chevy Colorado from Texas to North Carolina. I looked at three companies and when Sherpa started out, it was the cheapest. But the price went up to about $158 more than I was quoted. They didn’t tell me that the price could fluctuate and if you base the quality of the service on what I paid off, I paid too much. I had called Sherpa and I sat on hold for a little bit but with work, I didn’t really get to talk to anybody. $158 was a lot but it was not worth stressing over. I would advise others to be cautious with Sherpa. There wasn’t any transparency in my experience although the agent was nice when she sent me my quote. I confirmed it a week or so later and I got one email two days after I placed the request. It said they were struggling to find me a driver and that was it. They told me they found a driver about two days after that. I just waited for someone to tell me they were on their way to pick up my truck. He had given me a time when he would be there but it seemed like he always had an excuse for not being there when he said he was gonna be. It was either he was not there yet, he got caught somewhere or he stopped to get something to eat. I paid extra for the vehicle to be expressed but I got it about four days later than I was expecting to get it. The guy delivering my truck was giving me the runaround to get my own truck. Then they just gave me the typical excuse, “The truck bogged down.” It was up to the point where I had to call him everyday just to make sure he was making progress on delivering my truck. By the time he showed up, I had talked to him on the phone probably eight times and he was ready to get it over with too. Nonetheless, I got my trailer and it still worked. It was not messed up. In fact, it was just how I left it when I left.”

“I only give this review 5 stars since Sherpa’s part in shipping my car out to Texas from D.C was perfect. The actual rest of the process wasn’t as pleasant. Sherpa was phenomenal. Phil who set up my shipping was entirely professional and friendly. He even talked hockey with me and was very personable. He was patient and responsive as I asked questions about the process. I set up the dates well in advance. The time came for the car to be shipped and even though they were unable to secure a driver before the scheduled pickup time, the car was eventually picked up. Again, this is not at all Sherpa’s fault as they clearly stated from the beginning they cannot guarantee pickup dates. Now comes the unpleasant part. The driver texted me saying “Call me” and I called him and he told me when he should arrive. It was fine, and despite the fact that the car didn’t come until a day later than promised, I know he was busy and doing the best he can. Having to pick up my car in a Walmart parking lot late at night would’ve been a mess had my roommate not been able to give me a ride. The front license plate was missing and after pointing it out the driver screwed it back on. No problems. I paid him in cash, did a brief inspection of the car (again late at night in a sketchy parking lot) and he was on his way. I got into my car and some stuff had been moved around, but to my surprise the back two tires were low on air. The back left was missing a cap, which lead me to believe he had let the air out to prevent rocking or something in the transport vehicle. I got them filled up the next day and the people at the shop suggested I get them looked at. I went to a tire shop and the staff, including the manager, discovered large gashes in my two rear tires. It appears they were chained down inside the vehicle and the chains had worn down and completely ruined one of my tires. They said they had never seen anything like it before. The company managed to patch one, but I had to replace the other. I sent Sherpa the photos in order to insure this did not happen to any other customers and they sent them to the trucking company so they can “decide what they want to do.” None of this is a knock on Sherpa, I just feel there needs to be more accountability for the drivers. They should explain exactly how the car is being secured and not make you meet them in a dark parking lot. Sherpa claims they vet their drivers, but this one was unacceptable. It is a shame, because Sherpa was so amazing in every way and I was very impressed at how their manager reached out to me concerning the damage. I would have used Sherpa again, but now I will just drive my car myself because I don’t know how the diver will handle my vehicle. If you have to ship your car I would absolutely recommend Sherpa, but make sure you know everything you can about how your car is being handled. I had mine fully inspected before it was picked up and the shape it arrived in was truly unacceptable. Thank you again to Sherpa for everything.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Tomball, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
