Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Temple customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The transport went very well. The movers picked up my vehicle in the three-day timeframe they had mentioned and got here a day earlier than expected. I got a standalone quote with no extra costs and variables. Sherpa was very friendly and helpful. They kept me informed each step of the way.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa had one of the easiest websites to navigate, and then they recognized right away that with my vehicle, they couldn’t give me a quote online. They told me to call. Other websites gave me a quote and then changed it later because they realized the dimensions are not quite the same. So, I appreciated the straightforwardness of Sherpa.”

Google
★★★★★

“I had a very good experience with Sherpa and Kate! I had booked with another highly rated autotransporter in early December for a January 3rd move from Texas to San Diego, and the car had to be there no later than January 9th. Several days before the scheduled pickup, there was still no carrier selected and daily chats just kept saying they would update me when a carrier was selected.”

Factors that affect Temple Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The distance between Temple, TX and your destination greatly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer journeys.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Temple. Enclosed transport, while about 50% pricier, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against Central Texas weather extremes.
  • Location Accessibility: Temple’s proximity to I-35 makes it relatively accessible for auto transporters. However, if you’re shipping to or from more rural areas outside Temple, costs may increase.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like trucks or SUVs, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Seasonal Factors: Summer months and January often see higher car shipping prices due to increased demand. Temple’s mild winters generally don’t significantly impact shipping, but summer heat can affect costs.
  • Fuel Prices: Fluctuations in fuel costs can affect auto transport rates. Keep an eye on gas prices in Temple and along your shipping route.
  • Delivery Timeframe: If you need expedited shipping to or from Temple, expect to pay more. Flexible pickup and delivery dates often result in lower costs.
  • Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship as they require special equipment for loading and unloading.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Temple car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from the same area.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major highways like I-35 or US-190. Proximity to these routes can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your overall price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better pricing options. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective shipping times.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to and from Temple, TX may be influenced by seasonal factors. Discuss with Sherpa advisors how timing might affect your car shipping costs and options.

Temple, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Temple?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Temple. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Temple?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Temple?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Temple?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. During the summer months (June to August), temperatures in Temple can soar above 95°F (35°C). If you’re shipping a car during this time:

  • Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle to prevent melting or warping.

“Sherpa had one of the easiest websites to navigate, and then they recognized right away that with my vehicle, they couldn’t give me a quote online. They told me to call. Other websites gave me a quote and then changed it later because they realized the dimensions are not quite the same. So, I appreciated the straightforwardness of Sherpa. It was super easy to schedule a pickup. My car got there in less time than I thought it would take, and then my parents on the other end said it was really easy to pick it up and it was painless. So, everything was pretty easy. Communication with the driver was not too much, thank goodness, because I wouldn’t have wanted too much either. He called me when he was about an hour away, and then he called me when he arrived. Then, on the other end, he called my parents when he was about an hour away. He got there the night before, so he called my mom the next morning and my mom was able to go and pick it up that morning at her convenience. Overall, Sherpa was easy to book and there weren’t any surprises. Everything was very clear and straightforward and I’d use Sherpa again.”

“I liked the reviews for Sherpa. They also have the clean car guarantee and the $100 visa refund. Plus, they would match the cost up to $300 if it went up. Overall, Sherpa seemed on the up and up. I was getting some really low bids from everybody else and I knew they weren’t right. I was reading reviews where people said that the driver would then stick you for the rest when he gets there and I didn’t wanna deal with that. I wanted it more of a guarantee. With Sherpa, everything was fine. If I emailed, they would get back to me. When I called, I had to wait on hold a little bit but that happens everywhere nowadays. My car was picked up at the dealership in Killeen. The driver took a lot of pictures before and after he loaded the car. My salesman also took a few pictures and sent them to me. He said the car got on fine. The driver picked it up on a Friday and I got it on a Monday morning. Overall, I was happy. I even got my rebate on the carwash and the $100 Visa card really fast. I just had to send Sherpa a bill of lading. I would recommend them.”

“My youngest was in college in Michigan and a family that had befriended him had fallen on hard times. Their daughter was his roommate and she needed a car for her summer work program because she had to drive to get this internship. I just bought a new car and I had my old one that was still in very good shape. I didn’t need it and I don’t really need the money for it. I said that I’d give it to her but I couldn’t drive it up there. I was already going to fly it there to help him move. I found Sherpa and they had a really nice arrangement where we paid an upfront cost for them to find a driver and she just had to pay the driver. It was a really good thing for me because I wanted her commitment to pay something for the vehicle. It was a reasonable amount. That worked out really well for me. Sherpa was very helpful and easy to communicate with. The driver was very polite, courteous, and prompt. He got here on time and called me. He dropped off the vehicle and it was fine. I was very happy with the service. It was my first-time experience transporting a vehicle. I did it online and Sherpa came back promptly with a good price. I had contacted four other companies and some of them didn’t even respond. The ones that did were very, “Well, we’ll let you know,” that kind of thing. Sherpa was very good at getting me a price, “This is what it’s gonna cost.” It was getting closer to the deadline and they’d given me a window and they were still within the window. It was just so much was going on so I was a little nervous. I called Sherpa and at the time, you get an answering service thing because they get a lot of calls. I didn’t have time to wait. They called me right back and said, “We still haven’t found a driver for you, but we’ll get you something right now.” They didn’t realize I was anxious. They had a lot of information on their website. They were very prompt and they allayed my fears and said, “We haven’t found anyone yet, but if you need a name right now, we’ll get you one.” It worked out really well. In the payment way, the driver that they got wanted a little more cash so they reduced their fee that they would take from my card. But the problem was the young lady that was receiving the car only had so much cash and she’s a student. I said, “Well, look, can I just pay that difference to the driver upfront?” They said that was fine. When the driver came, I said, “I’ll give you the cash and then you can just email that you got the money.” He sent me a text that this was received so I had a record. That made me feel comfortable that he received that cash. When he arrived, he just took the additional cash from the young lady I was sending the car to. They were flexible and honest about the transaction. I would encourage people to use Sherpa. To drive the car would have cost me just as much money with hotel stays and gas. The stress would have been so much more too. You have to drive it 1,800 miles for three days and it would have been terrible. Sherpa delivered the car right when they said they were going to deliver it.”

Consumer Affairs

“I looked at and talked to many different companies, and I would get my vehicle faster using Sherpa. I didn’t do expedited, but it was kind of expedited. The other companies had a four to six-day window where they would pick it up and then it was a four to six-day window when they would drop it off. That Friday, Sherpa was telling me that they would either pick it up on Monday or Tuesday. I didn’t have to pay the deposit until they got a driver. It was Friday when they got the driver. At that point, the driver contacted me and informed me that he would be able to pick up on Monday or Tuesday. He picked it up on Tuesday and he said that he would be dropping it off on Friday, but he ended up dropping it off on Thursday night because that was when he came home. The car’s condition was great. They had a piece of paper on the floor so that no dirt got on the floors. Sherpa’s cost was a little bit more expensive than everybody else is, but it was well worth it. The driver was courteous. He kept me informed all along the way. He brought it a day early. I was very satisfied.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I found Sherpa very open and honest about the entire process, how they find drivers, what kind of insurance they have, what to expect, and what to watch out for. I like that they were very upfront with me about everything. Also, the rep was very patient in answering all my questions. I reserved a date but I told them I wasn’t sure what my exact date would be. I wanted a week to week flexibility so they did that. They put it on hold so they wouldn’t find a driver till I was ready to ship the car. The pickup and delivery were very smooth. The driver called us and told me when he got delayed a little because of traffic. He texted me several times to tell me how far he was. He couldn’t drive up right to my house because of the trees that we have and he told me that he didn’t want to risk the cars getting scratched, which was very nice. I appreciated that. We found a place where it was open and he could pull up without causing damage to anything. It was pretty well-organized and he knew what he was doing. He did the walkthrough with me, all of the pre-conditions when he picked up and then when he dropped off. It was a good experience.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Temple, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
