Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Sugar Land customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The driver contacted us as he was getting close to our delivery location – and because our location would pose challenges for delivery, he gave us two options for meeting him to get our Jeep. Delivery experience went very smoothly. And we’ve got our Jeep back to enjoy the rest of our vacation in Sugar Land!”

Google
★★★★★

“I had a very good experience with Sherpa and Kate! I had booked with another company but they couldn’t meet deadlines. Kate at Sherpa had solutions not excuses. She got a carrier assigned the same day and saved the day! The car was picked up on January 4th in Texas and arrived ahead of schedule in San Diego on January 7th.”

Google
★★★★★

“I needed to transport two vehicles from Texas to Florida in a very short period of time and not only were they able to find a driver, the price was reasonable. The driver was friendly, helped with the inspection, kept in touch and delivered right on time as promised. I felt confident my vehicles would arrive safe and they did.”

  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Sugar Land. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection from Houston’s occasional severe weather but is usually only necessary for high-value or classic vehicles.
  • Location Accessibility: Sugar Land’s proximity to major highways like I-69 and US-90A can help reduce costs. However, if you’re shipping to or from more remote areas outside the city, it may increase the price.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy and their weight.
  • Seasonal Factors: Auto transport prices in Sugar Land can fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months often see higher demand and prices, while winter might offer more competitive rates, except during the holiday season.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Sugar Land car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping is the most cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Sugar Land, TX. It offers greater flexibility and lower rates compared to enclosed carriers.
  • Select convenient locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and drop-off points near major highways like I-69 or US-90A. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Sugar Land car shipping needs. Consider weekday transport options, which may be less expensive than weekend services.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer when demand for auto transport services is high. Planning your car shipment during off-peak times can result in more competitive pricing.

Sugar Land, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Sugar Land?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Sugar Land. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Sugar Land?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Sugar Land?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Sugar Land?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. “I went out and looked at the different reviews that people had given for a bunch of shippers and compared them. Sherpa had more good reviews than bad reviews and they seemed to be in business longer than the others. And they didn’t have a problem with me going VFR direct to them instead of through another shipping agent to get to them. I liked that better because I prefer to do that kind of business instead of having somebody talk to somebody for me when it’s not necessary. Sherpa’s reps were friendly and they were right on it. In fact, they were so in tune with the shipper that they used that they thought he was the guy from the shipping company that transported the car. When I had a question about something, Sherpa’s rep told me to hold on a second then he must have dialed them directly, got an answer, and got me back an answer. It seemed like he was right there with the driver, so I was happy with that. He was really clear and concise. Plus, he didn’t cut me off like he was too busy. Aside from that, the driver was great. I had to do this whole car juggling thing in order to get the car, because I didn’t have the keys. I live close to where he was going to drop the vehicle off and he couldn’t pull into my neighborhood. So he parked in the Walmart parking lot, and I live like a mile and a half from there. Then, I’ve forgotten my checkbook and I told him I’d be right back, so I could pay him. He said no problem and that he’d get it unloaded by the time I came back. So, I went home, got the money, and came back. The price I paid was exactly what they quoted, too. All in all, it was a seamless experience. Sherpa was timely and efficient. I’ve never used the company before, but if anybody ever asked, I wouldn’t leave that one.”

“I had my daughters car transported from SA, Texas to Idaho and Sherpa is THE BEST!!! Always friendly, informative, and TOP NOTCH customer service!!! The company that they got to transport the car was equally amazing! The gentleman from Horizon Carriers had excellent communication, showed up when he said he would, and was detailed in checking out the car. The car left TX on a Monday at about 9:45 pm and arrived in N. Idaho on Wednesday at about 3:45 pm! The carrier was friendly and customer service was excellent! The street where he picked up the car was too narrow for his truck, so he parked the truck, walked to the pick up address, checked out the car, filled out the BOL and drive by daughter’s car to the truck and loaded it! Great work Horizon Carriers and superb vetting process on the part of Sherpa Auto Transport for choosing only the best of the best for their customers! This was our first time transporting a car so we were nervous, but Sherpa made it a truly stress-free experience!!! Thank you for caring about your customers and putting their needs first!”

“Sherpa had one of the easiest websites to navigate, and then they recognized right away that with my vehicle, they couldn’t give me a quote online. They told me to call. Other websites gave me a quote and then changed it later because they realized the dimensions are not quite the same. So, I appreciated the straightforwardness of Sherpa. It was super easy to schedule a pickup. My car got there in less time than I thought it would take, and then my parents on the other end said it was really easy to pick it up and it was painless. So, everything was pretty easy. Communication with the driver was not too much, thank goodness, because I wouldn’t have wanted too much either. He called me when he was about an hour away, and then he called me when he arrived. Then, on the other end, he called my parents when he was about an hour away. He got there the night before, so he called my mom the next morning and my mom was able to go and pick it up that morning at her convenience. Overall, Sherpa was easy to book and there weren’t any surprises. Everything was very clear and straightforward and I’d use Sherpa again.”

“My experience was great start to finish. There was a miscommunication error, but it was an easy fix. I started researching about 6 weeks before my move. I was connected with Scott who explained the process to me. I took the info and compared with other companies. Sherpa stood out with the price guarantee and great reviews so they were my choice. I submitted my credit card info to hold and then I received a call about 48 before the beginning of my transport window. They let me know that a driver had accepted my bid and that I would get another call about 24 hours prior to transport. I got the call and they picked up my car the next day. I was moving from KY to TX the next day. To my surprise they said the car would arrive in Texas the next day. I expected it to take a few days. I landed in Texas the next morning and as I was leaving the airport in an Uber, my phone rings saying that my car had been unloaded and the driver was waiting on me. How in the world?! My car left KY at 4pm and was in TX at 10am the next morning. The car actually got there before I did. The driver was great, customer service was great, my overall experience was great. I highly recommend Sherpa.”

“My youngest was in college in Michigan and a family that had befriended him had fallen on hard times. Their daughter was his roommate and she needed a car for her summer work program because she had to drive to get this internship. I just bought a new car and I had my old one that was still in very good shape. I didn’t need it and I don’t really need the money for it. I said that I’d give it to her but I couldn’t drive it up there. I was already going to fly it there to help him move. I found Sherpa and they had a really nice arrangement where we paid an upfront cost for them to find a driver and she just had to pay the driver. It was a really good thing for me because I wanted her commitment to pay something for the vehicle. It was a reasonable amount. That worked out really well for me. Sherpa was very helpful and easy to communicate with. The driver was very polite, courteous, and prompt. He got here on time and called me. He dropped off the vehicle and it was fine. I was very happy with the service. It was my first-time experience transporting a vehicle. I did it online and Sherpa came back promptly with a good price. I had contacted four other companies and some of them didn’t even respond. The ones that did were very, “Well, we’ll let you know,” that kind of thing. Sherpa was very good at getting me a price, “This is what it’s gonna cost.” It was getting closer to the deadline and they’d given me a window and they were still within the window. It was just so much was going on so I was a little nervous. I called Sherpa and at the time, you get an answering service thing because they get a lot of calls. I didn’t have time to wait. They called me right back and said, “We still haven’t found a driver for you, but we’ll get you something right now.” They didn’t realize I was anxious. They had a lot of information on their website. They were very prompt and they allayed my fears and said, “We haven’t found anyone yet, but if you need a name right now, we’ll get you one.” It worked out really well. In the payment way, the driver that they got wanted a little more cash so they reduced their fee that they would take from my card. But the problem was the young lady that was receiving the car only had so much cash and she’s a student. I said, “Well, look, can I just pay that difference to the driver upfront?” They said that was fine. When the driver came, I said, “I’ll give you the cash and then you can just email that you got the money.” He sent me a text that this was received so I had a record. That made me feel comfortable that he received that cash. When he arrived, he just took the additional cash from the young lady I was sending the car to. They were flexible and honest about the transaction. I would encourage people to use Sherpa. To drive the car would have cost me just as much money with hotel stays and gas. The stress would have been so much more too. You have to drive it 1,800 miles for three days and it would have been terrible. Sherpa delivered the car right when they said they were going to deliver it.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Sugar Land, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
