Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our San Marcos customers say about Sherpa:

★★★★★

“I had a very good experience with Sherpa and Kate! I decided to contact Sherpa as I had received a quote from them when I began to shop for auto transporters, but now I was desperate. The agent I dealt with from Sherpa was Kate and she had solutions not excuses. Yes, I did pay for expedited service, but she got a carrier assigned the same day and saved the day! The car was picked up on January 4th in Texas and it arrived ahead of schedule in San Diego on January 7th.”

Google
★★★★★

“I am truly grateful I found Sherpa Auto Transport. This was my first time arranging transportation and needless to say it was really overwhelming. I needed to transport two vehicles from Texas to Florida in a very short period of time and not only were they able to find a driver, the price was reasonable. I also must say the driver was friendly and helped out with the inspection, he also kept in touch and delivered right on time as he promised.”

Google
★★★★★

“I had my daughters car transported from SA, Texas to Idaho and Sherpa is THE BEST!!! Always friendly, informative, and TOP NOTCH customer service!!! The company that they got to transport the car was equally amazing! The gentleman from Horizon Carriers had excellent communication, showed up when he said he would, and was detailed in checking out the car. The car left TX on a Monday at about 9:45 pm and arrived in N. Idaho on Wednesday at about 3:45 pm!”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from San Marcos, TX. Longer distances typically result in higher prices, but the cost per mile often decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to San Marcos. Enclosed trailers, while offering extra protection, are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship to San Marcos due to the space they occupy and their weight.
  • Seasonal Factors: San Marcos experiences hot summers and mild winters. During peak moving seasons, such as summer, car shipping prices may increase due to higher demand.
  • Location Accessibility: San Marcos’s proximity to major highways like I-35 can affect pricing. Easy access to main routes often leads to more competitive rates for car transport services.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can result in lower costs. Rush or guaranteed delivery services to San Marcos will typically increase the price.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. Non-running cars may require special equipment, increasing the cost of shipping to or from San Marcos.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your San Marcos car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways like I-35, which runs through San Marcos. This can help reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your car shipping quote.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and ensures compliance with auto transport regulations.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your San Marcos, TX car transport.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer when demand for auto transport services is higher. Shipping your car during off-peak times may result in more competitive rates.
  • Explore multi-car discounts: If you’re shipping multiple vehicles, ask about potential discounts. Many car shipping companies offer reduced rates for transporting more than one car.

San Marcos, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from San Marcos?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from San Marcos. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from San Marcos?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from San Marcos?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to San Marcos?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“I Googled the top 10 shipping companies, and Sherpa was number 2. I called the first one, and they didn`t answer, so I called Sherpa. They answered and they were really nice. They told me some information that others didn`t or tried to withhold, and that was pretty nice in terms of transparency. I`m glad that I was able to connect with Sherpa. Because there were some that called me to give me offers and there were some of them that were bad mouthing others. I appreciate it when I spoke with Sherpa that they weren`t like that. It was more so on the professional side and just trying to help me get my car to where it needed to go. The guy that came to get the car was really awesome. He`s even from Texas, so I knew that he was familiar with the area. Communication was awesome as well. On his way to Cali, he kept me notified every half hour or so. When he got to the pickup location, he was pretty respectful in terms of not wanting to drive the big vehicle into this gated community, because a lot of them parked their cars outside along the road. I met the driver outside and he loaded my car with very good care and got it to Texas in less than the time I was told. I didn`t make it the the delivery location before he did, and he even helped out my family. My car is manual, and my parents didn`t know how to do that, so he was nice enough to help put it in the garage for them. Overall, it was a great experience and if I needed another vehicle transported, I would definitely go with Sherpa.”

“I only give this review 5 stars since Sherpa`s part in shipping my car out to Texas from D.C was perfect. The actual rest of the process wasn`t as pleasant. Sherpa was phenomenal. Phil who set up my shipping was entirely professional and friendly. He even talked hockey with me and was very personable. He was patient and responsive as I asked questions about the process. I set up the dates well in advance. The time came for the car to be shipped and even though they were unable to secure a driver before the scheduled pickup time, the car was eventually picked up. Again, this is not at all Sherpa`s fault as they clearly stated from the beginning they cannot guarantee pickup dates. Now comes the unpleasant part. The driver texted me saying “Call me” and I called him and he told me when he should arrive. It was fine, and despite the fact that the car didn`t come until a day later than promised, I know he was busy and doing the best he can. Having to pick up my car in a Walmart parking lot late at night would`ve been a mess had my roommate not been able to give me a ride. The front license plate was missing and after pointing it out the driver screwed it back on. No problems. I paid him in cash, did a brief inspection of the car (again late at night in a sketchy parking lot) and he was on his way. I got into my car and some stuff had been moved around, but to my surprise the back two tires were low on air. The back left was missing a cap, which lead me to believe he had let the air out to prevent rocking or something in the transport vehicle. I got them filled up the next day and the people at the shop suggested I get them looked at. I went to a tire shop and the staff, including the manager, discovered large gashes in my two rear tires. It appears they were chained down inside the vehicle and the chains had worn down and completely ruined one of my tires. They said they had never seen anything like it before. The company managed to patch one, but I had to replace the other. I sent Sherpa the photos in order to insure this did not happen to any other customers and they sent them to the trucking company so they can “decide what they want to do.” None of this is a knock on Sherpa, I just feel there needs to be more accountability for the drivers. They should explain exactly how the car is being secured and not make you meet them in a dark parking lot. Sherpa claims they vet their drivers, but this one was unacceptable. It is a shame, because Sherpa was so amazing in every way and I was very impressed at how their manager reached out to me concerning the damage. I would have used Sherpa again, but now I will just drive my car myself because I don`t know how the diver will handle my vehicle. If you have to ship your car I would absolutely recommend Sherpa, but make sure you know everything you can about how your car is being handled. I had mine fully inspected before it was picked up and the shape it arrived in was truly unacceptable. Thank you again to Sherpa for everything.”

“I used Sherpa transport to help me out of a bad spot. I picked up a car at a dealership in Dallas Texas and started my 22 hr trip back home. I got as far a Little Rock Arkansas and at 11:30 hit one of Interstate 40`s famous Arkansas pot holes it must have been about 2 feet in diameter and at least 6″ deep. It ruined my tire and broke my 22″ rim. I tried the next day to find someone to fix my car , but nobody had a wheel and tire for my exotic ( no spare in car) I had the car towed to a lot and paid a huge amount to fly back to BWI airport. The next day I found Sherpa transport after making about 20 calls to other so called first class carriers. Nobody would help me transport my car with a flat tire and bent rim. I contacted Sherpa and they were extremely helpful and courteous ! They came up with a price that I could handle and allowed me to charge it on my credit card. Their attention to detail is first class and they promised email and text notification through out the entire process ,and they did not disappoint me ! the let me know when they had a driver and then when he was scheduled for pick up , when he did pick it up and notifications when the driver was close to my location. I am very happy with Sherpa and the driver the contracted with. I will be using Sherpa transport again and again in my small custom car business.”

“I shipped two cars using Sherpa Auto Transport during the month of DEC 2020. First car I shipped was a 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback from Austin, TX to San Diego, CA. The 2nd car I shipped was a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT from San Diego, CA to Lehi, UT. On the first car shipment, their sales agent Angie was very helpful. She took the time to explain to me the process involved in shipping a car and she also noted that Sherpa Auto Transport has a “price lock” guarantee. This to me was one of the reasons I chose to ship with them. For the 1st car shipment, it was picked up on a Monday night in Austin, TX and it was delivered in San Diego, CA early Thursday morning. I was so impressed with this shipment that I used them again for the 2nd car shipment. For the 2nd car shipment, it was picked up early morning Wed in San Diego, CA and it arrived on a Saturday morning in Lehi, UT (Friday was Christmas Day so no delivery scheduled). To sum it up…if you want a reliable company to handle your car transport, Sherpa Auto Transport is the one you should use.”

“I used Sherpa Auto Transport to transport a Jeep from Charlotte, NC to Austin, TX two weeks ago and was very pleased with their service. They were very easy to work with, kept in contact with me, followed up on any questions, picked up and delivered as scheduled, and were fairly priced. When the carrier Sherpa hired to transport my vehicle had not contact me as planned, I called Sherpa who immediately contacted the carrier, then followed up to see that the carrier had called me. At each stage of the process, Sherpa kept me up to date with emails as to the status of the transport. The driver for the carrier communicated with me on the days of pickup and delivery as to the specific time (within an hour) and location for pick-up and drop-off, as the truck was too large for some neighborhood streets. The driver also took good care loading, securing, and unloading my vehicle. I worked primarily with one contact at Sherpa for the entire process but when she wasn`t available her colleague addressed and followed up on my question quickly. I highly recommend that Sherpa Auto Transport be considered for any of your vehicle transport needs.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in San Marcos, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping
