Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Richmond customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“They were able to pick up my car within 2 days. I asked for a weekend pick up. They said that it was going to be hard but they made it happen. The driver got the car here safe and before delivery time. He handled the car with care and was very responsible. I have dealt what companies in the past and pick up was late and drop off so I’ll give this company five stars”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“This was an easy process where Sherpa was communicative on what would happen and how they would make sure our car arrived when it was supposed to arrive. They also stated the price and made everything clear. On the delivery, the car was in the same condition that it was on on the departure.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“I used Sherpa transport to help me out of a bad spot. I picked up a car at a dealership in Dallas Texas and started my 22 hr trip back home. I got as far a Little Rock Arkansas and at 11:30 hit one of Interstate 40’s famous Arkansas pot holes it must have been about 2 feet in diameter and at least 6″ deep. It ruined my tire and broke my 22″ rim. I tried the next day to find someone to fix my car, but nobody had a wheel and tire for my exotic (no spare in car) I had the car towed to a lot and paid a huge amount to fly back to BWI airport. The next day I found Sherpa transport after making about 20 calls to other so called first class carriers. Nobody would help me transport my car with a flat tire and bent rim. I contacted Sherpa and they were extremely helpful and courteous! They came up with a price that I could handle and allowed me to charge it on my credit card.”

Factors that affect Richmond Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The distance between Richmond, TX and your destination greatly affects car shipping costs. Longer distances typically mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer journeys.
  • Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to and from Richmond, TX. Enclosed carriers offer extra protection but cost about 50% more and may have longer delivery times.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship than compact cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Route Accessibility: Richmond’s proximity to major highways like US-59 and I-69 can help reduce costs. However, if your destination is in a less accessible area, prices may increase.
  • Seasonal Factors: Richmond’s hot summers can affect car shipping prices. Peak moving seasons, typically summer months, may lead to higher rates due to increased demand.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates often result in lower prices. Expedited shipping will cost more but may be necessary in time-sensitive situations.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. Non-running cars require special equipment, increasing the cost.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Richmond, TX. If you’re considering enclosed transport, learn more about open vs. enclosed car shipping to determine the best option for your vehicle.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Richmond car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major highways like I-69 or US-90A. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and liability concerns, potentially leading to a better rate.
  • Be flexible: Offering flexibility in your pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better options and potentially lower costs for your Richmond, TX auto transport.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer. Shipping your car during off-peak times can result in more competitive rates.

Richmond, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Richmond?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Richmond. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Richmond?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Richmond?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Richmond?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. “Delivery was made on time with no problems. The delivery team kept me up to date with no surprises. I was anticipating a longer wait time, but the team delivered as expected. Great job! I would certainly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport to everyone!”

“My experience was great start to finish. There was a miscommunication error, but it was an easy fix. I started researching about 6 weeks before my move. I was connected with Scott who explained the process to me. I took the info and compared with other companies. Sherpa stood out with the price guarantee and great reviews so they were my choice. I submitted my credit card info to hold and then I received a call about 48 before the beginning of my transport window. They let me know that a driver had accepted my bid and that I would get another call about 24 hours prior to transport. I got the call and they picked up my car the next day. I was moving from KY to TX the next day. To my surprise they said the car would arrive in Texas the next day. I expected it to take a few days. I landed in Texas the next morning and as I was leaving the airport in an Uber, my phone rings saying that my car had been unloaded and the driver was waiting on me. How in the world?! My car left KY at 4pm and was in TX at 10am the next morning. The car actually got there before I did. The driver was great, customer service was great, my overall experience was great. I highly recommend Sherpa.”

“I had a very good experience with Sherpa and Kate! I had booked with another highly rated autotransporter in early December for a January 3rd move from Texas to San Diego, and the car had to be there no later than January 9th. Several days before the scheduled pickup, there was still no carrier selected and daily chats just kept saying they would update me when a carrier was selected. On January 3rd, I was told they could meet the delivery deadlines. I called several other companies only to hear the same thing, that they could not guarantee shipping times. I decided to contact Sherpa as I had received a quote from them when I began to shop for auto transporters, but now I was desperate. The agent I dealt with from Sherpa was Kate and she had solutions not excuses. Yes, I did pay for expedited service, but she got a carrier assigned the same day and saved the day! The car was picked up on January 4th in Texas and it arrived ahead of schedule in San Diego on January 7th. I also want to leave positive comments on the carrier, New Day Inc. If you are fortunate enough to get Next Day, Inc. and Sergei as the driver, you will be in good hands. He arrived on time, sent me a detailed, inspection report and emailed an electronic Bill of Lading before driving away. When the car was delivered, I received the final electronic Bill of Lading before he pulled away in San Diego. Even the personal belongings that were packed in the trunk arrived safely. The service from Sherpa, Kate and Next Day, Inc was flawless. Thank you! Karen E”

“I used Sherpa Auto Transport to transport a Jeep from Charlotte, NC to Austin, TX two weeks ago and was very pleased with their service. They were very easy to work with, kept in contact with me, followed up on any questions, picked up and delivered as scheduled, and were fairly priced. When the carrier Sherpa hired to transport my vehicle had not contact me as planned, I called Sherpa who immediately contacted the carrier, then followed up to see that the carrier had called me. At each stage of the process, Sherpa kept me up to date with emails as to the status of the transport. The driver for the carrier communicated with me on the days of pickup and delivery as to the specific time (within an hour) and location for pick-up and drop-off, as the truck was too large for some neighborhood streets. The driver also took good care loading, securing, and unloading my vehicle. I worked primarily with one contact at Sherpa for the entire process but when she wasn’t available her colleague addressed and followed up on my question quickly. I highly recommend that Sherpa Auto Transport be considered for any of your vehicle transport needs.”

“From the moment I contacted Sherpa Auto Transport, everything was smooth and efficient. I placed a call on Friday, had a call back by Saturday morning and transport arranged by Monday. They picked the car up in FL on Wednesday morning and we had it in San Antonio, TX on Thursday night. The driver was very responsive and courteous and his truck was immaculate. I was also extremely impressed with his driving ability. We have a sloped driveway and he maneuvered the trailer deftly right up to the garage door with literally a half inch of clearance to spare. The car arrived in the exact condition it was when it left. I have never transported a car before and to say it was a little bit daunting is an understatement. After getting the run around from another carrier, Sherpa really stepped in and made things easy. They were patient, explained the process thoroughly and answered all my questions without making me feel stupid for asking. I transported a car that was my father’s (a 1964 Porsche 356) that is very special to our family and I would trust Sherpa with it again.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Richmond, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
