Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Richardson, TX significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the per-mile rate often decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and affordable option for auto transport to or from Richardson. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers added protection from weather and road debris, which can be beneficial during Texas’s hot summers or occasional storms.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy and their weight.
  • Route Accessibility: Richardson’s proximity to major highways like I-635 and US-75 can help keep costs down. However, if you’re shipping to or from a less accessible area, it may increase the price.
  • Seasonal Demand: Auto transport prices in Richardson can fluctuate with seasonal demand. Summer months and January often see higher prices due to increased relocation activity.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Opting for a flexible pickup window can lead to more cost-effective car shipping. Expedited services will increase the price but may be necessary in some situations.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship as they can be driven onto the carrier. Inoperable vehicles require special equipment, increasing the cost.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from Richardson, TX. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Richardson car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is typically the most cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Richardson, TX. It offers greater flexibility and lower rates compared to enclosed transport.
  • Pick strategic locations: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major highways like I-635 or US-75. This can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your overall car shipping price.
  • Remove personal items: Empty your vehicle before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about personal belongings during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Richardson car transport. Carriers may offer discounts for filling spots on existing routes.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport rates can fluctuate based on demand. If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer for potentially lower prices when shipping a car to or from Richardson.

How does Richardson Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process in Richardson, TX, can be a breeze with the right guidance. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you ship your vehicle to or from this vibrant Dallas suburb:

  • Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company. This will give you an idea of the cost based on factors like your vehicle type and desired shipping dates.
  • Book your shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car transport service. Remember, nothing is typically due upfront when booking.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash your car thoroughly and document any existing damage. Remove personal items and ensure your gas tank is no more than a quarter full. For Richardson’s hot summers, check your car’s coolant levels and tire pressure.
  • Meet the carrier: On pickup day, you’ll meet the auto transport carrier. They’ll perform an inspection and you’ll hand over the keys. If you’re shipping during Richardson’s storm season (typically spring), consider enclosed transport for added protection.
  • Track your shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Most car shipping companies offer regular updates.
  • Receive your vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car again and sign the bill of lading. You’ll then pay any remaining balance to complete the car shipping process.

When shipping a car to or from Richardson, TX, keep in mind the city’s proximity to major highways like I-75 and I-635. This accessibility can sometimes lead to quicker pickup and delivery times. Also, consider seasonal factors: summer heat may affect shipping times, while winter is generally the off-season for car transport and might offer lower rates. You’ll need proof of insurance, vehicle inspection, and out-of-state registration. Richardson, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Richardson?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Richardson. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Richardson?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Richardson?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Richardson?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Richardson

When planning car shipping to or from Richardson, TX, it’s crucial to consider the city’s seasonal weather patterns. Richardson experiences hot summers and mild winters, which can impact your auto transport experience. During summer months, temperatures often soar above 90°F (32°C), so it’s wise to place a sunshade under your car’s windshield to protect the interior. Also, remove any heat-sensitive items from your vehicle to prevent melting or damage.

While winters are generally mild, Richardson occasionally experiences freezing temperatures and light snow. If you’re shipping a car during winter, ensure your vehicle is prepared for potential cold weather. However, avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers cannot transport vehicles with them installed. Additionally, choose pickup and drop-off locations on level ground to ensure the truck’s stability in case of icy conditions.

Spring and fall are ideal seasons for car transport in Richardson, with pleasant temperatures and lower chances of extreme weather. However, be aware of potential thunderstorms and tornadoes, which are more common during these seasons. Your car shipping company will monitor weather conditions and adjust schedules if necessary to ensure safe transport.

When scheduling your auto transport, consider local events that may affect car shipping services. Richardson is home to the University of Texas at Dallas, so expect increased demand for car shipping around the start and end of academic semesters. Planning your car transport a few weeks before or after these peak times can help you avoid higher prices and potential delays.

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you’ll be well-prepared for a smooth car shipping experience to or from Richardson, TX. Remember to discuss any specific concerns with your chosen auto transport specialist to ensure your vehicle arrives safely at its destination.

“We were moving from Chicago land area to LA so I needed to ship my car. I reached out to an open site, which gave me a million people. I started reading and they were just relentless. I was not moving for a while. I had no idea if it was gonna cost $1,000 to ship my car or $5,000. I was just trying to get estimates. My move was never an exact date to pick up the car. I was waiting on selling our house and a bunch of other things. I started to find someone again and Sherpa came up highly recommended. It had great reviews and a very competitive price. They didn`t inundate me. It was like, “When I figure it out, I`ll let you know.” Another issue was when we were moving and getting ourselves out here, we didn`t have an address because we didn`t find a house yet. Sherpa picked up the car and we didn`t even 100% know where we were looking to move to yet. That was pretty interesting. I had to update them. We were dealing with two people and they were fine. They understood and were very easy to talk to. Someone then called and said they were with Sherpa and were picking up the car. They were great. It took four days from start to finish. They even came in a day early than they said. The driver would text me every time like where he was gonna be, where he`s at now, and when he was gonna get there. He texted me the day before saying he was going to be in the vicinity at around X amount of time. It was perfect. The driver knew where we are going and dropping off my car was super easy. He was at the mall and it was great because he said he might be running late. I was having dinner with friends. I told the driver to let me know when he got there and I would run out and give him my keys. He kept me in the loop the entire time. We had snow so that was an issue. It was the same thing going in. We had to go a little further but it was not a big deal. He was right on like what time to pick up so that was fine. My husband said the car was gonna come washed but it didn`t. The car arrived really dirty but that didn`t bother me. I just did that drive so I understood. I was driving from Chicago to here. I went through a windstorm or tornadoes through Oklahoma, snow and fall staff, and a sandstorm somewhere in Texas. It definitely was a lot of debris. On the whole, call direct and book Sherpa. It was a no-brainer. You put your stuff in and they come.”

“I called Sherpa Auto Transport and I got somebody. It was a person who spoke English. That made me happy because I felt we were communicating. And we had a discussion. He told me how it all worked and how much it would cost. We talked about dates. And somehow they got back to me. They set it up. It was very smooth. They told me there would be a driver. Somebody said he would call. I got anxious about the whole thing. Because I`m in the middle of Manhattan. My car is in a garage. I can drive it where they need to. But how would I do it in the middle of Manhattan? The driver called me up and said, “I`ll be there in the blah, blah, minutes”. And I went over to the garage and got the car. And I thought, “What am I going to do? I`m going to have to park it somewhere. And then I`m gonna find a parking space.†It ended up being nothing at all. So, I waited on 55th Street. Second Avenue goes from one end of Manhattan all the way down to the other end. It goes from north to south. And he said, “I`ll meet you at 54th in a second. I`ll have my transport there.” I drove over there. And there he was with the transport. He got out. And we looked at the car. We had a chit-chat about it. And he said, “All right. See you later.” He got in the car. Drove it on the transport. I turned around, took a picture of it and left. The driver was a sweetheart. He picked the car up on a Friday. And it was delivered on a Tuesday. Whoever did it in Texas was a different person than I talked to, who was the ultimate driver. He called her a half an hour. He said he was 10 miles out. But she didn`t answer the phone. So, the driver called me. And I called her. And he called her. She lives in Austin, Texas. She lives more out in the suburbs. And she said, he didn`t want to bring it on her street because there were too many trees. She said, “I just jogged over to the, you know. It wasn`t very far.” She sent me a thing and said, “There`s this little ding here.” I said, “Oh, that`s an old one.” There was nothing. And he gave her the keys. She signed it, she gave him the check, and that was that. It was very smooth. They had their stuff together. The car got there in no time. Sherpa was great. Everybody was professional. I would recommend them.”

“My daughters go to school out of state and they need their cars at school. I’ve been transporting the cars back and forth for a couple of years and the first company I used did a great job. But they changed owners when I called them. Then I booked with another place but they called me two days before the pick-up date and said that they couldn’t pick the cars up for another week. So, that was a nightmare. And then I went with another transport and they fell through. So I went online and started looking at different transport companies and then got to Sherpa. And we had them ship a Volkswagen Beetle and a Mazda 3 from New Jersey to Texas. The Sherpa representative was great. When she said she was gonna call me, she called me. And when she said she was gonna email me information, she did. Compared to the last three experiences I had, it was the best. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, thinking this could be a big pain in the neck, but it didn’t and they were really good. The quote was really high, but they were competitive. From what I’ve read, if you’re not charged enough, then a transport company will not take the car. It’s a very touch-and-go business and there’s not a lot of regulation. So if they can make more money taking another car, they’ll do it. But at the time the vehicles were delivered, the price did not fluctuate from their original quote. The vehicles were delivered a couple of hours earlier. The driver was to drive the vehicles to a Walmart parking lot right off Interstate 35 because he thought that would be the easiest unloading, but then he called and said that Walmart would not let him in the parking lot. So he was at the gas station across the highway. My daughter went by herself and she had to get two cars. We were just gonna leave the cars in the parking lot at Walmart. But he drove her back and forth across the highway to help her out, which was very nice. He was very accommodating and perfectly willing to help her even though he had other things to do. I’ll use them again to get both cars back to Texas instead of driving and hopefully they’re around.”

“I`m in the military and I got stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. But I had a family in North Carolina and I was shipping my 2006 Chevy Colorado from Texas to North Carolina. I looked at three companies and when Sherpa started out, it was the cheapest. But the price went up to about $158 more than I was quoted. They didn’t tell me that the price could fluctuate and if you base the quality of the service on what I paid off, I paid too much. I had called Sherpa and I sat on hold for a little bit but with work, I didn’t really get to talk to anybody. $158 was a lot but it was not worth stressing over. I would advise others to be cautious with Sherpa. There wasn’t any transparency in my experience although the agent was nice when she sent me my quote. I confirmed it a week or so later and I got one email two days after I placed the request. It said they were struggling to find me a driver and that was it. They told me they found a driver about two days after that. I just waited for someone to tell me they were on their way to pick up my truck. He had given me a time when he would be there but it seemed like he always had an excuse for not being there when he said he was gonna be. It was either he was not there yet, he got caught somewhere or he stopped to get something to eat. I paid extra for the vehicle to be express but I got it about four days later than I was expecting to get it. The guy delivering my truck was giving me the runaround to get my own truck. Then they just gave me the typical excuse, “The truck bogged down.” It was up to the point where I had to call him everyday just to make sure he was making progress on delivering my truck. By the time he showed up, I had talked to him on the phone probably eight times and he was ready to get it over with too. Nonetheless, I got my trailer and it still worked. It was not messed up. In fact, it was just how I left it when I left.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Richardson, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
