Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our McKinney customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The experience was great. Everything was exactly how they said it would be. Our vehicle was picked up on time and delivered when they said it would be. I highly recommend Sherpa for arranging your vehicle transportation needs. Overall a great experience with McKinney.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa did a great job. They were fantastic and very personable. The driver came into my neighborhood but I told him he didn’t need to do that. He was challenged a little bit in terms of dropping off. My son is in the military and he’s in a highly secure area in McKinney. So he has no phones all day long. So I was kind of concerned.”

Google
★★★★★

“I had a very good experience with Sherpa and Kate! I had booked with another highly rated autotransporter in early December for a January 3rd move from Texas to San Diego, and the car had to be there no later than January 9th. Several days before the scheduled pickup, there was still no carrier selected.”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The distance between McKinney, TX and your destination significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the cost per mile typically decreases for longer journeys.
  • Transport Type: Open auto transport is the most common and affordable option for shipping cars to or from McKinney. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection from weather and road debris, which can be beneficial during Texas’s hot summers or occasional storms.
  • Location Accessibility: McKinney’s proximity to major highways like U.S. 75 and SH 121 makes it relatively accessible for auto transporters, potentially lowering costs. However, if you’re shipping to a more remote area, expect higher prices.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy and their weight.
  • Seasonal Factors: Car shipping prices in McKinney may fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months often see higher demand and prices, while winter might offer more competitive rates, except during the holiday season.
  • Fuel Prices: Fluctuations in fuel costs can affect auto transport prices, as carriers adjust their rates to maintain profitability.
  • Delivery Timeframe: If you need expedited shipping to or from McKinney, expect to pay more. Flexible delivery windows often result in lower costs.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from McKinney, TX. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your McKinney car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility for negotiating better prices.
  • Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major highways like US-75 or US-380. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your overall car shipping cost.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove all personal items from your car before transport. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during shipping.
  • Be flexible: The more adaptable you are with dates and locations, the better your chances of securing a lower rate for your McKinney auto transport. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of carrier availability and potentially reduced prices.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer. Shipping your car to or from McKinney during off-peak times can result in more competitive pricing from auto transport companies.

Texas requires annual vehicle inspections, so ensure your car is up-to-date before shipping a car to McKinney. After arrival, you’ll have 30 days to register your vehicle with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. McKinney’s climate can be hot and humid, so when using car shipping services, consider enclosed transport to protect your vehicle from the elements.

McKinney, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from McKinney?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from McKinney. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from McKinney?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from McKinney?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to McKinney?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

When planning car shipping to or from McKinney, TX, it’s crucial to consider the seasonal weather patterns that can affect your auto transport experience. McKinney experiences hot summers and mild winters, which can impact your car shipping decisions throughout the year.

During the summer months (June to August), temperatures in McKinney can soar above 90°F. If you’re shipping a car during this time:

  • Major events like the McKinney Arts in Bloom Festival in April may cause temporary road closures or traffic congestion.

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smooth and efficient car shipping experience in McKinney, TX.

“I found Sherpa on a web search and they were the second one that I called. They were really attentive to my needs and they stayed in contact with me. They were also more available than the other company every time I contacted them. After I chose Sherpa, they gave me a schedule and the car was loaded in Dallas. It had one more day left on their schedule to load it and then it was brought to Russellville, Arkansas. The guys that did the transporting were in touch by cellphone with me, personally. If I ever need them again, I`ll call. Everything was beautiful and it went down exactly like we talked all the way through the whole thing. The only way that things could have been any better is if they were sitting on top of the car, loaded it up immediately and went straight to me, but I understand that they have a route that they have to run in order to load and unload. I used to drive a truck and I understand that these guys load three or four cars at a time and drop them off in different places.”

“I needed to ship a BMW for about 1,400 miles. Sherpa had good reviews so I chose to hire them and the rep I dealt with answered all my questions. The quote they gave me was on the higher side of all the quotes that I’ve gotten, but not to the point where I wasn’t gonna go with them. In the end, it was the same amount I paid for their service. During the delivery, they called, picked up the car when they said they were gonna pick it up, and said that they were gonna drop it off six days later. But they dropped it off three days sooner. The driver brought it to where I work instead of my house because I was working at the time, so it was not really a big deal. Plus, the car was as clean as it was when he left, so it wasn’t dirty at all.”

“My daughter was moving from New Jersey to California. We had to use Sherpa, and it was an amazing experience. The last time she moved from Texas to New Jersey, we used a different transport and it was a nightmare. Her car got damaged and it was just off. They weren`t there when they said they were gonna be there. But as far as Sherpa, when they said they were gonna be there, they were there. They picked up the car when they said they would. They dropped it off when they said they would. The car was in the same condition that it left. Nothing happened to it. I would definitely use Sherpa again. If I decide to move across the country to California to be near my daughter, I would use Sherpa to transport my car. When my daughter moved a couple years ago, we looked through a lot of different transport companies. We remember Sherpa`s having such a great rating, and so my daughter really investigated all their companies. She said, “If they can find a driver, I definitely wanna use Sherpa.” The price was reasonable too. Another place she wanted to use was $2,500. They said it`s gonna cost this amount of dollars to ship the car, and that was exactly what it cost to ship the car, which is the way it should always be. It wasn`t more or less. So, between the price and the quality of the service, we were very pleased. The customer service at Sherpa always returned our phone calls promptly. In fact, they gave us a certain amount of time that it would take to retain a driver. It was two days later or the next day, and we had a driver that was gonna take her car out to California. It was quicker than we thought it would be. He also dropped it off. The last time we did the transport, when they brought it back to New Jersey, they refused to come into my neighborhood, which does have a wide street. She had to meet the driver somewhere. Here with Sherpa, they came in right in front of my house and picked up the car. When my daughter was out in California, she said they came right in front of her apartment and dropped off the car. The car was in the same condition it left. There was white on it because apparently, he went through a snow storm. Sherpa was reliable. They were nice and friendly and helpful.”

“We were moving from Chicago land area to LA so I needed to ship my car. I reached out to an open site, which gave me a million people. I started reading and they were just relentless. I was not moving for a while. I had no idea if it was gonna cost $1,000 to ship my car or $5,000. I was just trying to get estimates. My move was never an exact date to pick up the car. I was waiting on selling our house and a bunch of other things. I started to find someone again and Sherpa came up highly recommended. It had great reviews and a very competitive price. They didn`t inundate me. It was like, “When I figure it out, I`ll let you know.” Another issue was when we were moving and getting ourselves out here, we didn`t have an address because we didn`t find a house yet. Sherpa picked up the car and we didn`t even 100% know where we were looking to move to yet. That was pretty interesting. I had to update them. We were dealing with two people and they were fine. They understood and were very easy to talk to. Someone then called and said they were with Sherpa and were picking up the car. They were great. It took four days from start to finish. They even came in a day early than they said. The driver would text me every time like where he was gonna be, where he`s at now, and when he was gonna get there. He texted me the day before saying he was going to be in the vicinity at around X amount of time. It was perfect. The driver knew where we are going and dropping off my car was super easy. He was at the mall and it was great because he said he might be running late. I was having dinner with friends. I told the driver to let me know when he got there and I would run out and give him my keys. He kept me in the loop the entire time. We had snow so that was an issue. It was the same thing going in. We had to go a little further but it was not a big deal. He was right on like what time to pick up so that was fine. My husband said the car was gonna come washed but it didn`t. The car arrived really dirty but that didn`t bother me. I just did that drive so I understood. I was driving from Chicago to here. I went through a windstorm or tornadoes through Oklahoma, snow and fall staff, and a sandstorm somewhere in Texas. It definitely was a lot of debris. On the whole, call direct and book Sherpa. It was a no-brainer. You put your stuff in and they come.”

“I had purchased a car from Texas and I needed it transported to me here in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sherpa was within $100 of the typical cost to bring it up. There were some companies that advertised $400, which I know wouldn`t even cover the gas, so I didn`t even think about them. But from looking at reviews on people that have used Sherpa, I felt comfortable with them, so I went with them. Their service representative gave me a price, and I told him I had a price similar to that, but a little less. First, he gave me all of their credibility as far as how they go about their business, and then the insurance of the car. And if it would make a difference, they would offer a $100 card of return for that $100 difference, so I wouldn`t be paying any more. If there was a problem with the difference in cost once the car was on the trailer, they would pay the difference. It all worked out fine. There was a problem where they couldn`t identify my little town where I live. So they asked me what the major city was near me, which was 20 miles away, and it`s Pittsburgh. I gave them that and that was the zip code that they attached to it with the transport guy. When it got close to the delivery, he realized I was on the other side of Pittsburgh from where he was coming and it would take more time and fuel to get over to where I`m at. So it was an additional $75, which the company took care of after the fact. I paid for it upfront, and they reimbursed it. They handled it really well. The man that delivered was a super guy. He really handled the car well, he was polite, and I would definitely recommend him again. He notified me the day that he would be bringing it, and he notified me within a couple hours of the delivery. Then we agreed on a place for him to drop it because he can`t get to my house. It sits back off a private lane that it`d be difficult to get through. So we met there and it all worked out great. The car was in the same condition as what I expected when I bought it in Texas. Overall, Sherpa was really professional and they do what they say they`re gonna do. The only thing that`s important in life is that you do what you say you`re gonna do.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in McKinney, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]

Look for providers with a proven track record of successful auto transports and positive customer reviews. Ensure the company offers adequate insurance coverage and maintains a good standing with the FMCSA. Consider factors like pricing transparency, quality of customer service, and range of car shipping services offered. Be wary of unusually low quotes or companies that demand large upfront deposits. A reputable car transport provider should offer clear communication and a smooth process, much like the friendly community spirit found in McKinney’s historic downtown square.
