Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa’s customer service called soon after and answered any questions I had. They told me how the process worked and there was no pressure or anything to do anything further. We decided to go ahead with them and we called them back when we were ready. Their quote seemed reasonable and was about what we expected. It was exactly what we paid. Also, the driver was fine and the transport was much quicker than I anticipated. It was there in one day. This was from Dallas to Atlanta so that was pretty direct.”

“Sherpa was great! I used them to ship my car from Dallas, TX to Washington, DC and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I got a great rate and they were super nice and thorough about the process. I believe my initial call was with Scott and he gave amazing service. The driver they found for me kept me in the loop the entire time and got my car to the destination in about two days. 10/10 recommend using them if you need to ship your car long distance.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“I retained Sherpa Auto Transport to transport a SUV from TX to NJ. I opted for a flexible 5 day window pick up and open transport. They weren’t the cheapest but they weren’t the most expensive either. I went with them because they had a $100k cargo insurance and provided reimbursement for a car cleaning 2 weeks from drop off. The deposit and final payment was all relayed by credit card, which was convenient.”

Factors that affect Dallas Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Dallas, TX. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the cost per mile typically decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport in Dallas. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers protection from weather and road debris, which can be beneficial during Texas’s hot summers or occasional storms.
  • Location Accessibility: Dallas’s extensive highway network, including I-20, I-30, and I-35E, makes it easily accessible for auto transport. However, if you’re shipping to or from more remote areas outside the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, costs may increase.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks popular in Texas, typically cost more to ship due to the space and fuel they require.
  • Time of Year: Summer months and January are peak seasons for car shipping in Dallas, potentially leading to higher prices. Consider shipping during off-peak times for better rates.
  • Fuel Prices: Fluctuations in fuel costs, which can be significant in Texas, may affect the overall price of auto transport services.
  • Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship as they require special equipment for loading and unloading.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Dallas. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re unsure whether to choose open or enclosed transport, learn more about the differences in our open vs. enclosed car shipping guide.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Dallas car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping is more cost-effective than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates on your auto transport.
  • Pick strategic locations: Discuss with Sherpa advisors about pickup/dropoff points near major interstates like I-20, I-30, or I-35E. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during car transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your car shipping services.
  • Consider seasonality: Dallas experiences milder winters compared to northern states. Shipping your car during off-peak seasons may result in lower rates.
  • Opt for standard shipping: Unless you’re transporting a luxury or classic car, standard shipping is usually sufficient and more affordable for most vehicles.

Dallas, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Dallas?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Dallas. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Dallas?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Dallas?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Dallas?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Dallas

When planning car shipping to or from Dallas, TX, it’s crucial to consider the city’s unique seasonal factors. Dallas experiences a subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, which can impact your auto transport experience.

During the scorching summer months (June to August), temperatures can soar above 100°F. If you’re shipping a car during this time:

  • Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle
  • Consider scheduling early morning or evening pickups to avoid peak heat

Winter in Dallas (December to February) is generally mild, but occasional ice storms can occur. When using car shipping services in winter:

  • Remove snow tires or chains before transport
  • Avoid leaving freeze-sensitive liquids in the vehicle

Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are ideal times for car transport in Dallas, with pleasant temperatures and lower chances of extreme weather. However, be aware of potential thunderstorms and tornadoes, particularly in spring.

When scheduling your Dallas car shipping, also consider these factors:

  • Peak moving seasons (May to September) may increase demand and prices
  • Major events like the State Fair of Texas (late September to mid-October) can affect traffic and availability

“We were in transition, moving from California to North Carolina, so we had several vehicles and one of them was an older Jeep Wrangler that I wanted to send to my son. He`s in Baltimore, Maryland. So, it’s from San Diego to Baltimore, Maryland. Our plans were very fluid early in the summer so originally, we arranged with Sherpa to send the vehicle to North Carolina in May. That changed because we figured out that we needed the vehicle in California through the summer. So, I contacted Sherpa and put it on hold until September. They were good to work with. They put it on hold like I requested and followed up several times to make sure things were still on track and to get good timing. Once our plans were firmed up, I was able to reach back out to them and we arranged the transport very quickly. We were living on our boat this summer and the guy came one night. I explained that to him and that we were with the Jeep. This was on the day of the pickup and I told him there was no rush. Any time that night was fine and he could just text me and let me know when he was there and I would meet him out front. And that’s exactly what happened. It was great. We looked over the vehicle and he did probably as good of a job as I did in terms of documenting the condition of the vehicle. Then he was good to go. I didn`t need to watch him load it onto his truck. He did that and I went back down to the boat. It all hinged on communication and it was very good. I`m very particular that if the vendor doesn`t meet expectations or if they perform poorly or not at par, I`m very unlikely to use them again. But I`ve used Sherpa twice. I used them a year and a half ago when my son was moving from Boston to Dallas, and that was a seamless transaction as well. So, when it came time to move the Jeep from California to Baltimore, I didn`t even look around. I just called Sherpa and got back in touch with them, got a quote, and everything went smoothly. We have a BMW convertible in San Diego and in January or February, we`re gonna move it to North Carolina as well and I`ll be contacting Sherpa to handle that transition also.”

“We had a field vehicle that needed to be moved from one project location to another. The transport was from Corpus Christi to El Paso. I got quotes from four or five different logistics companies. Sherpa was one of the cheapest and I wanted to go with them because they offered $300 to cover any unexpected fees from the driver. Every single one of those other logistics carrier companies was calling me and emailing me nonstop saying that Sherpa wouldn`t do it and that they weren`t going to get somebody for that price. But Sherpa ended up meeting our expectations at the price I was quoted and not a dollar more. I emailed every one of those other companies back and said, “Thanks for your scare tactics, but they got it done at the price quoted. Don`t contact me again.” Every other company I dealt with felt like a used car salesman type of situation. But Sherpa was really professional and not pushy. That process from beginning to end was a little over a week. The driver was great. As soon as the carrier was established, they immediately got in touch with us via email. They gave the pickup contact a good heads up of a couple of hours and they did the same thing with the delivery contact. The transport was completed around the end of August or beginning of September. When our need came up for another hotshot, Sherpa was just my first phone call. They stayed true to their price. They had good customer service and communication along the way. Overall. it was a positive first experience and we went with them for the second one as well.”

“I had my daughters car transported from SA, Texas to Idaho and Sherpa is THE BEST!!! Always friendly, informative, and TOP NOTCH customer service!!! The company that they got to transport the car was equally amazing! The gentleman from Horizon Carriers had excellent communication, showed up when he said he would, and was detailed in checking out the car. The car left TX on a Monday at about 9:45 pm and arrived in N. Idaho on Wednesday at about 3:45 pm! The carrier was friendly and customer service was excellent! The street where he picked up the car was too narrow for his truck, so he parked the truck, walked to the pick up address, checked out the car, filled out the BOL and drive by daughter`s car to the truck and loaded it! Great work Horizon Carriers and superb vetting process on the part of Sherpa Auto Transport for choosing only the best of the best for their customers! This was our first time transporting a car so we were nervous, but Sherpa made it a truly stress-free experience!!! Thank you for caring about your customers and putting their needs first!”

“I unexpectedly purchased a Porsche Cayman in San Antonio, TX and needed to move it to Cleveland, Ohio. All within the time span of 5 days. I posted a car transport request on one of the popular sites and received multiple queries and quotes. The Sherpa quote stood our as being one of the lower priced quotes, which caught my interest. After speaking with the Sherpa agent, I was impressed with his depth of knowledge, and the support that was promised throughout the entire process. I opted to select Sherpa, simply based on the person that spoke with, and their many positive on-line reviews. I thought it was an excellent value. The transporter who accepted the job of moving my Porsche was Konstantin. I must say that he was among the most conscientious persons I have ever met. He thoroughly photographed all aspects of my care before loading it into his enclosed trailer. He secured the wheels and covered the car. Throughout the two-day trip he provided updates. He also answered my text messages when I sent queries. That fellow was so good that I’d hire him for my own business, if I could! Shipping a Porsche was a bit unsettling. However, the Sherpa team and Konstantin did everything they could to reduce my anxiety and delivered my car as promised. Thank you, Sherpa and Konstantin. I offer my highest recommendations. I made the initial order 2 weeks before pick up and was assigned a driver a few days before the start of my pick up window. The driver contacted me the night before pick up of their expected arrival time. When they arrived, we walked around the car to confer the condition of the vehicle and they took the vehicle to load onto their trailer. It took about a week and they had a local driver drop off at the destination who also walked through the condition of the car. It was nice, simple, easy, and they were communicative. Would definitely recommend and use again if necessary!”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Dallas, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel.
