Factors that affect Austin Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Austin’s central location in Texas affects shipping costs. Longer distances, such as shipping from Austin to coastal cities, typically result in higher prices due to increased fuel consumption and time on the road.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Austin. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers protection from Texas’s intense sun and occasional hailstorms for high-value vehicles.
- Location Accessibility: Austin’s well-connected highway system, including I-35 and US-290, makes it easier and more affordable for auto transport. Rural areas outside Austin may incur additional costs due to decreased accessibility.
- Vehicle Size: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, which are popular in Texas, may cost more to ship due to their weight and size. Compact cars are generally less expensive to transport.
- Seasonal Demand: Austin’s car shipping prices can fluctuate with seasonal trends. Summer months and January often see higher rates due to increased demand, while spring and fall may offer more competitive pricing.
- Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship as they require special equipment for loading and unloading. Ensure your car is in working condition to avoid additional fees.
- Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive rates for car shipping to or from Austin. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates typically come at a premium.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from Austin. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Austin car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-35 or US-183. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates liability concerns for the auto transport company.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your car transport to or from Austin.
- Consider off-peak seasons: If possible, schedule your Austin car shipping during less busy times of the year. This can result in more competitive pricing from carriers.

Austin Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When moving to or from Austin, TX, it’s crucial to understand the local vehicle requirements and regulations. For car shipping to Austin, consider removing your toll tag to avoid unexpected charges. The primary toll tag system in the area is TxTag, used on various toll roads throughout Austin and Central Texas. Upon arrival, you’ll need to register your vehicle with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles within 30 days. Texas requires annual vehicle inspections, so schedule one soon after your move.
Austin’s climate can be hot and humid, so when preparing your car for auto transport, ensure your vehicle’s cooling system is in good condition. If you’re using car shipping services to move away from Austin, remember to cancel your TxTag account and any local parking permits.
For a smooth transition, set up utilities before your move. Austin Energy provides electricity, while Austin Water handles water services. Popular internet providers include AT&T, Spectrum, and Google Fiber. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in the Austin Independent School District.
When shipping a car to Austin, be aware of the city’s major highways: I-35, MoPac Expressway (Loop 1), and US 183. These routes are crucial for car transport companies navigating the area. Austin’s car shipping landscape can be busy, especially during events like SXSW or Austin City Limits, so plan your auto transport accordingly.
Lastly, embrace Austin’s unique culture by obtaining a library card from the Austin Public Library system and exploring the city’s famous live music scene. Whether you’re using a car shipping company to move to or from Austin, remember to forward your mail and tie up loose ends like gym memberships. With proper planning and the right car transport service, your move to or from the vibrant city of Austin can be a seamless experience.
Austin, Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Austin?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Austin. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Austin?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Austin?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Austin?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

During the scorching summer months (June to September), temperatures can soar above 100°F. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior

- University move-in/out: With several colleges in Austin, August and May can be busy for car shipping services
- SXSW Festival: March sees an influx of visitors, potentially affecting car transport availability

Reviews from our Texas Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Texas customers:
“I called Sherpa Auto Transport and I got somebody. It was a person who spoke English. That made me happy because I felt we were communicating. And we had a discussion. He told me how it all worked and how much it would cost. We talked about dates. And somehow they got back to me. They set it up. It was very smooth. They told me there would be a driver. Somebody said he would call. I got anxious about the whole thing. Because I`m in the middle of Manhattan. My car is in a garage. I can drive it where they need to. But how would I do it in the middle of Manhattan? The driver called me up and said, “I`ll be there in the blah, blah, minutes”. And I went over to the garage and got the car. And I thought, “What am I going to do? I`m going to have to park it somewhere. And then I`m gonna find a parking space.” It ended up being nothing at all. So, I waited on 55th Street. Second Avenue goes from one end of Manhattan all the way down to the other end. It goes from north to south. And he said, “I`ll meet you at 54th in a second. I`ll have my transport there.” I drove over there. And there he was with the transport. He got out. And we looked at the car. We had a chit-chat about it. And he said, “All right. See you later.” He got in the car. Drove it on the transport. I turned around, took a picture of it and left. The driver was a sweetheart. He picked the car up on a Friday. And it was delivered on a Tuesday. Whoever did it in Texas was a different person than I talked to, who was the ultimate driver. He called her a half an hour. He said he was 10 miles out. But she didn`t answer the phone. So, the driver called me. And I called her. And he called her. She lives in Austin, Texas. She lives more out in the suburbs. And she said, he didn`t want to bring it on her street because there were too many trees. She said, “I just jogged over to the, you know. It wasn`t very far.” She sent me a thing and said, “There`s this little ding here.” I said, “Oh, that`s an old one.” There was nothing. And he gave her the keys. She signed it, she gave him the check, and that was that. It was very smooth. They had their stuff together. The car got there in no time. Sherpa was great. Everybody was professional. I would recommend them.”
“I went out and looked at the different reviews that people had given for a bunch of shippers and compared them. Sherpa had more good reviews than bad reviews and they seemed to be in business longer than the others. And they didn`t have a problem with me going VFR direct to them instead of through another shipping agent to get to them. I liked that better because I prefer to do that kind of business instead of having somebody talk to somebody for me when it`s not necessary. Sherpa`s reps were friendly and they were right on it. In fact, they were so in tune with the shipper that they used that they thought he was the guy from the shipping company that transported the car. When I had a question about something, Sherpa`s rep told me to hold on a second then he must have dialed them directly, got an answer, and got me back an answer. It seemed like he was right there with the driver, so I was happy with that. He was really clear and concise. Plus, he didn`t cut me off like he was too busy. Aside from that, the driver was great. I had to do this whole car juggling thing in order to get the car, because I didn`t have the keys. I live close to where he was going to drop the vehicle off and he couldn`t pull into my neighborhood. So he parked in the Walmart parking lot, and I live like a mile and a half from there. Then, I’ve forgotten my checkbook and I told him I`d be right back, so I could pay him. He said no problem and that he`d get it unloaded by the time I came back. So, I went home, got the money, and came back. The price I paid was exactly what they quoted, too. All in all, it was a seamless experience. Sherpa was timely and efficient. I`ve never used the company before, but if anybody ever asked, I wouldn’t leave that one.”
“Sherpa was rated by the Better Business Bureau very well. They had high customer ratings. They gave a reasonable price that wasn`t too high but wasn`t alarmingly low either. Most of the other companies just seemed like a scam. After I researched everything, I already knew that I was gonna go with Sherpa and hire them to do the booking part. I was transporting my wife`s vehicle so she didn`t have to drive across the country. Sherpa had a really good pledge where they offered a portion of money. If they couldn`t get the vehicle transported within the time slot that I allotted, they would add additional funding to try to increase the transporters to take it. That was the selling point for me. It was a last minute pickup. I needed the vehicle picked up within five days of contacting Sherpa and they were able to do so. The customer service and the drivers that they hired were all well. The driver called the day of and said that he was in Austin and that he was gonna be there for the day so he could pick up the car. We told him it would be a few hours, so he waited for us and picked up the car with no issues. The vehicle was picked up in the allotted time. Delivery-wise, they were ahead of schedule. The driver communicated when he was a few hours out that he was running early. Even though I wasn`t able to be there, my sister was. It was a smooth handoff.”
“We used Sherpa Auto Transport to ship our car from Los Angeles to Austin. We started this online, and the whole process was very smooth and seamless. They were prompt, efficient, and friendly, and the cost to me was very reasonable. We were kept informed throughout the process. The actual transport vendor that Sherpa used in this case was also excellent. Originally, I was skeptical of shipping the car. However, after this experience, I highly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport. I was referred to Sherpa through a friend who had used their service several years ago. I highly recommend using Sherpa if you ever decides to ship a car. They were definitely beyond my expectation.”
“After reviewing and considering numerous auto transport companies I decided to go with Sherpa Auto Transport to deliver my new Corvette from Austin, TX to the San Francisco Bay Area, CA. I both spoke with representatives on the phone and via email. My questions were always quickly and thoroughly answered. The representatives were always very professional and friendly. As Sherpa is basically a broker, they connected me with the company that actually transported my car. Sherpa continually kept me updated regarding any information that I needed. The car was picked up as scheduled and delivered to my home without a scratch four days after pickup. Sherpa was fabulous and I highly recommend them.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Austin, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company
When choosing an auto transport company for your Austin car shipping needs, prioritize reputation and experience. Look for providers with a track record of successful car transports and positive customer reviews. Ensure the company offers adequate insurance coverage and maintains a good safety record with the FMCSA. Consider factors like pricing, service range, and customer support quality. Be wary of unusually low quotes or companies lacking proper licensing. A reputable car shipping company should offer transparent pricing and clear communication throughout the process.
