Texas Car Shipping Key Takeaways
Certified by Tim DeMille, Auto Transport Expert
- Texas to California with an average cost of $975 – $1300 and an avg. transit time of 2 to 6 days
- Texas to Florida with an average cost of $800 – $1125 and an avg. transit time of 1 to 4 days
- Texas to Washington with an average cost of $1200 – $1525 and an avg. transit time of 3 to 7 days
- Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
- Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
- Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Texas customers say about Sherpa:
“The Sherpa representative was great. When she said she was gonna call me, she called me. And when she said she was gonna email me information, she did. Compared to the last three experiences I had, it was the best. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, thinking this could be a big pain in the neck, but it didn’t and they were really good. The vehicles were delivered a couple of hours earlier. The driver was to drive the vehicles to a Walmart parking lot right off Interstate 35 because he thought that would be the easiest unloading, but then he called and said that Walmart would not let him in the parking lot. So he was at the gas station across the highway. My daughter went by herself and she had to get two cars. We were just gonna leave the cars in the parking lot at Walmart. But he drove her back and forth across the highway to help her out, which was very nice. He was very accommodating and perfectly willing to help her even though he had other things to do. I’ll use them again to get both cars back to Texas instead of driving and hopefully they’re around.”
“I had a very good experience with Sherpa and Kate! I had booked with another highly rated autotransporter in early December for a January 3rd move from Texas to San Diego, and the car had to be there no later than January 9th. On January 3rd, I was told they could meet the delivery deadlines. I decided to contact Sherpa as I had received a quote from them when I began to shop for auto transporters, but now I was desperate. The agent I dealt with from Sherpa was Kate and she had solutions not excuses. Yes, I did pay for expedited service, but she got a carrier assigned the same day and saved the day! The car was picked up on January 4th in Texas and it arrived ahead of schedule in San Diego on January 7th.”
“I had my daughters car transported from SA, Texas to Idaho and Sherpa is THE BEST!!! Always friendly, informative, and TOP NOTCH customer service!!! The company that they got to transport the car was equally amazing! The gentleman from Horizon Carriers had excellent communication, showed up when he said he would, and was detailed in checking out the car. The car left TX on a Monday at about 9:45 pm and arrived in N. Idaho on Wednesday at about 3:45 pm! The carrier was friendly and customer service was excellent! The street where he picked up the car was too narrow for his truck, so he parked the truck, walked to the pick up address, checked out the car, filled out the BOL and drive by daughter’s car to the truck and loaded it!”

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Texas Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Texas is a vast state, and shipping costs increase with distance. For example, transporting a car from Houston to El Paso (over 700 miles) will cost more than shipping from Dallas to Austin (about 200 miles).
- Route Popularity: Major routes along I-10, I-35, or I-45 are often less expensive due to higher traffic. Shipping to or from smaller towns off these main arteries may increase costs.
- Seasonal Factors: Texas summers can be scorching, which may affect car shipping prices. Additionally, “snowbird” season (when retirees move south for winter) can increase demand and costs for routes to and from Texas.
- Vehicle Type: Larger vehicles like trucks or SUVs, common in Texas, may cost more to ship due to their size and weight. Conversely, compact cars are generally less expensive to transport.
- Transport Method: Open transport is the most economical option for most Texas car shipping needs. Enclosed transport, while offering extra protection, is typically 50% more expensive and usually takes longer.
- Timing: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to lower costs. Rush orders or specific date requirements may increase the price of your Texas auto transport.
- Market Conditions: Fuel prices and overall demand for car shipping services in Texas can influence costs. Peak moving seasons, like summer, may see higher prices.
Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your Texas car shipping needs. For more detailed information on cost factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re considering enclosed transport for a specialty vehicle, learn more about open vs. enclosed car shipping.
Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Texas car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles along major interstates like I-10, I-35, or I-45.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates when transporting your vehicle to or from Texas. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some cars, open shipping offers more flexibility for negotiating better prices.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major Texas highways. Cities like Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio often have optimal spots that can help reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during the auto transport process.
- Be flexible: Offer date ranges for pickup and delivery when arranging your Texas car shipping. This flexibility can lead to more cost-effective options and smoother coordination with carriers traversing the Lone Star State.
- Consider seasonal timing: Texas weather can impact car shipping costs. Avoiding peak summer months or planning around major events like SXSW in Austin might help you secure better rates for your auto transport needs.

Texas Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to Texas or moving within the Lone Star State, there are several important factors to consider. First, Texas has a unique toll system called TxTag. If you’re relocating to Texas, you’ll want to sign up for a TxTag account to avoid higher pay-by-mail rates. For those moving away, remember to cancel your TxTag to prevent unnecessary charges.
Texas requires annual vehicle inspections, so if you’re shipping your car to Texas, ensure it meets state standards. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles handles vehicle registration, which must be completed within 30 days of establishing residency. New residents should also be aware of Texas’s parking regulations, which can vary by city.
When settling in Texas, setting up utilities is crucial. Major electricity providers include TXU Energy and Reliant Energy, while water services are typically managed by local municipalities. For internet, providers like AT&T, Spectrum, and Xfinity are widely available.
Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll children in local schools. Texas’s public libraries offer free cards to residents, providing access to a wealth of resources. If you’re leaving Texas, remember to forward your mail, cancel local memberships, and notify relevant authorities of your move.
When using car shipping services in Texas, consider the state’s diverse climate. The scorching summer heat can affect vehicles, so choose a car transport company that offers enclosed transport for added protection. Also, be mindful of Texas’s extensive highway system, including interstates like I-10, I-20, and I-35, which are crucial routes for auto transport companies.
Whether you’re shipping a car to Texas or moving within the state, understanding these local nuances will help ensure a smooth transition. With its unique blend of urban and rural landscapes, Texas offers a diverse living experience for new residents and a wealth of opportunities for those exploring car shipping options.
Texas Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Texas?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Texas. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Texas?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Texas?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Texas?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Texas
When planning car shipping to or from Texas, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse climate and seasonal factors. Texas experiences a wide range of weather conditions throughout the year, which can significantly impact your auto transport experience.
During the hot summer months, typically from June to September, temperatures can soar well above 100°F (38°C). If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Consider placing a sunshade under your windshield to protect the interior from intense heat.
- Remove any heat-sensitive items from your vehicle to prevent melting or damage.
- Be prepared for potential delays, as extreme heat can affect car transport schedules.
Winter in Texas, particularly in the northern regions, can bring occasional snow and ice. When car shipping during winter months:
- Ensure your vehicle is equipped with all-season tires, as carriers cannot transport cars with snow chains.
- Choose pickup and drop-off locations on level ground to avoid issues with icy inclines.
- Remove any liquids that might freeze and expand, potentially causing damage.
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are generally milder, but can bring severe thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes. When scheduling Texas car shipping during these seasons, stay informed about weather forecasts and be prepared for potential schedule adjustments.
Additionally, consider peak auto transport times in Texas:
- August and January: High demand due to college students moving.
- Winter months: Increased car shipping services for snowbirds heading to warmer Texas cities.
- Summer: Popular time for families relocating, leading to busier car transport schedules.
By considering these factors and planning accordingly, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient car shipping experience to or from the Lone Star State.
Car Shipping for College Students in Texas
When planning to ship a car to a Texas university, it’s crucial to consider parking logistics. Most Texas colleges require students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. For instance, The University of Texas at Austin offers various parking options, but spaces are limited and in high demand. Students should apply early for permits, which can be done online.
Many off-campus apartments near Texas universities provide parking, but it’s essential to confirm this before signing a lease. For on-campus residents, some dorms offer parking, while others may require students to use designated lots. During breaks, such as winter holidays, most Texas universities allow students to leave their cars on campus, but it’s wise to check specific policies.
Weather considerations for car transport to Texas are minimal, as the state rarely experiences snow. However, students should prepare for extreme heat, which can affect vehicle performance. Regular maintenance is key. Before utilizing car shipping services to Texas, students should verify their insurance coverage, including roadside assistance, remains valid in their new location.
Lastly, when choosing a car shipping company for Texas car shipping, look for providers experienced in university moves. They can offer valuable advice on timing your auto transport to coincide with move-in dates and navigate campus-specific regulations. Remember, planning ahead for your car transport needs will ensure a smooth transition to your Texas college experience.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Texas
Texas is home to numerous military installations, making it a hub for service members and their families. If you’re planning to ship a car to or from a Texas military base, here’s some practical advice:
Parking: Most bases offer on-base parking, but space can be limited. Some installations, like Fort Hood, have designated long-term parking areas. However, it’s best to check with your specific base for details. Many service members choose to live off-base in nearby neighborhoods, which generally have ample street parking.
Vehicle Registration: Texas requires all vehicles to be registered within 30 days of arrival. Military members may be eligible for registration fee waivers. Visit the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website for more information.
Resources: Texas military bases are well-equipped with amenities. You’ll find commissaries, exchanges, and recreational facilities on most installations. The surrounding communities often have military-friendly businesses and support services too.
When using car shipping services to or from Texas military bases, consider Sherpa Auto Transport. As a thank you for your service, we offer a $50 military discount on our auto transport services. Our team understands the unique needs of military relocations and is committed to making your Texas car shipping experience smooth and stress-free.
Remember, each base may have specific rules for shipping a car on or off the installation. Always check with your base’s transportation office for the most up-to-date information before arranging car transport services.
Reviews from our Texas Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Texas customers:
“I had a very good experience with Sherpa and Kate! I had booked with another highly rated autotransporter in early December for a January 3rd move from Texas to San Diego, and the car had to be there no later than January 9th. On January 3rd, I was told they could meet the delivery deadlines. I decided to contact Sherpa as I had received a quote from them when I began to shop for auto transporters, but now I was desperate.
“I retained Sherpa Auto Transport to transport a SUV from TX to NJ. I opted for a flexible 5 day window pick up and open transport. They weren’t the cheapest but they weren’t the most expensive either. I went with them because they had a $100k cargo insurance and provided reimbursement for a car cleaning 2 weeks from drop off. The deposit and final payment was all relayed by credit card, which was convenient. After a deposit was made, they sent my order to dispatch to match with a driver. I made the initial order 2 weeks before pick up and was assigned a driver a few days before the start of my pick up window. The driver contacted me the night before pick up of their expected arrival time. When they arrived, we walked around the car to confer the condition of the vehicle and they took the vehicle to load onto their trailer. It took about a week and they had a local driver drop off at the destination who also walked through the condition of the car. It was nice, simple, easy, and they were communicative. Would definitely recommend and use again if necessary!”
“I shipped two cars using Sherpa Auto Transport during the month of DEC 2020. First car I shipped was a 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback from Austin, TX to San Diego, CA. The 2nd car I shipped was a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT from San Diego, CA to Lehi, UT. On the first car shipment, their sales agent Angie was very helpful. She took the time to explain to me the process involved in shipping a car and she also noted that Sherpa Auto Transport has a “price lock” guarantee. This to me was one of the reasons I chose to ship with them. For the 1st car shipment, it was picked up on a Monday night in Austin, TX and it was delivered in San Diego, CA early Thursday morning. I was so impressed with this shipment that I used them again for the 2nd car shipment. For the 2nd car shipment, it was picked up early morning Wed in San Diego, CA and it arrived on a Saturday morning in Lehi, UT (Friday was Christmas Day so no delivery scheduled). To sum it up…if you want a reliable company to handle your car transport, Sherpa Auto Transport is the one you should use.”
“Driver called ahead of time several times to update me, and let me know when it would be here, and it was right on time. Truck was well secured to the trailer and there wasn’t a scratch on it. Delivery from near Houston, TX to nearly Memphis for just $825- hell yeah! Saved me from wasting my weekend flying down and making a twelve-hour drive back home. Not to mention the cost of a plane ticket. Delivery driver was super nice. Unloaded the truck and got me the paperwork, we were done in maybe ten minutes. This is a good, customer service-oriented company. I highly recommend.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Texas, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Texas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
Fun Facts About Car Shipping
- The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
- Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
- The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
- Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
- Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]

Look for providers with a proven track record of successful transports and positive customer reviews. Ensure the company has adequate insurance coverage and a clean safety record with the FMCSA. Consider factors like pricing, customer service quality, and available services. Be wary of unusually low quotes or companies that demand large upfront deposits. A reputable car shipping company should offer transparent pricing and clear communication throughout the process. By carefully evaluating these aspects, you’ll find a reliable auto transport service to safely move your vehicle across the Lone Star State or beyond.
