Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Factors that affect Tennessee Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: Tennessee’s central location in the southeastern United States can affect shipping costs. Longer distances, such as shipping from Tennessee to the West Coast, will generally be more expensive than shorter routes within the Southeast.
  • Route Accessibility: Tennessee’s major interstates (I-40, I-65, I-75, and I-24) make it easier and more cost-effective to transport vehicles to and from urban areas like Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville. Rural locations off these main routes may incur higher costs.
  • Seasonal Factors: Tennessee’s climate can impact car shipping prices. Summer months often see higher demand and prices due to more people moving. Winter weather, particularly in the eastern mountainous regions, may affect transport schedules and costs.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your vehicle affect shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in Tennessee, may cost more to transport than smaller cars.
  • Transport Method: Open transport is the most economical and widely used option for car shipping to and from Tennessee. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, offers additional protection and may be preferred for high-value or classic vehicles.
  • Timing and Flexibility: Being flexible with your pickup and delivery dates can often result in lower car shipping costs. Rush or guaranteed delivery services will typically be more expensive.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Tennessee. For more detailed information on what affects car shipping prices, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re considering enclosed transport, learn more about the differences between open vs. enclosed car shipping.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Tennessee car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping provides the lowest rates and most flexibility for negotiating prices when transporting cars to or from Tennessee.
  • Optimize pickup/dropoff locations: Work with Sherpa advisors to find convenient spots near major interstates like I-40, I-65, or I-75. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Tennessee auto transport.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer or holidays when demand for car shipping services is higher.
  • Explore multi-car discounts: If you’re moving multiple vehicles to or from Tennessee, ask about potential savings for shipping them together.
  • Prepare your car properly: Ensure your vehicle is in good working condition to avoid any delays or additional charges during the auto transport process.

Tennessee Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Internet Setup Car Moving
Utility Setup Car Moving
Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to Tennessee or moving within the Volunteer State, there are several key factors to consider. Tennessee doesn’t have a statewide toll system, so you won’t need to worry about removing toll readers. However, the state does have specific vehicle inspection and registration requirements.

New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. The process involves visiting a local County Clerk’s office with your out-of-state title, proof of insurance, and identification. Tennessee requires emissions testing in some counties, including Davidson, Hamilton, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson, and Wilson. Be sure to check if your new county of residence requires this test before registration.

When settling in Tennessee, you’ll need to set up utilities. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is the primary electricity provider for much of the state, while water services are typically managed by local municipalities. For internet, major providers include Comcast, AT&T, and Charter Spectrum, but availability varies by location.

Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if you have children, enroll them in local schools. Tennessee’s Department of Education website offers resources for finding and registering with nearby schools. Public libraries in Tennessee often offer free library cards to residents, providing access to a wealth of resources.

If you’re moving away from Tennessee, remember to forward your mail, cancel local memberships, and notify relevant authorities of your move. When using car shipping services to transport your vehicle out of state, consider Tennessee’s climate. The state experiences hot summers and mild winters, so discuss with your auto transport company about any special precautions needed for your car during transit.

Tennessee’s major interstates, including I-40, I-75, and I-24, make it an excellent hub for car transport. When choosing a car shipping company, look for one familiar with Tennessee’s routes and weather conditions to ensure a smooth car shipping experience to or from the Volunteer State.

Tennessee Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Tennessee?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Tennessee. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Tennessee?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Tennessee?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Tennessee?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Tennessee

When planning car shipping to or from Tennessee, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse climate and seasonal factors. Tennessee experiences all four seasons, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.

In winter, snow and ice can affect car shipping services, especially in mountainous regions. If you’re scheduling a winter car transport, consider these tips:

  • Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent issues on icy surfaces.
  • Remove any items that could freeze and potentially damage your vehicle during transit.

Summer in Tennessee can be hot and humid. When shipping a car during this season:

  • Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior.
  • Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt in high temperatures.

Spring and fall are generally ideal for Tennessee car shipping, but be aware of peak times that can affect availability and pricing:

  • College move-in and move-out periods (typically August and May)
  • Snowbird season (October to April), when many retirees relocate
  • Major events like the Bonnaroo Music Festival in June

To ensure a smooth auto transport experience, book your car shipping well in advance during these busy periods. Alternatively, consider scheduling your Tennessee car shipping a few weeks before or after peak times for potentially better rates and availability.

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can make informed decisions when using car shipping services to or from the Volunteer State, ensuring a hassle-free experience with your chosen car shipping company.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Tennessee

When considering car shipping to Tennessee for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at universities. Most Tennessee schools require parking permits, which students can purchase online or at campus offices. For example, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville offers various permit options, including commuter and resident passes. Always check specific university websites for the most up-to-date information on parking policies and fees.

Many off-campus apartments near Tennessee universities provide parking, but it’s essential to confirm this before signing a lease. For on-campus housing, parking availability varies by institution. Some schools offer limited spots, while others have ample parking garages.

If you’re planning to use car transport services to bring your vehicle to Tennessee, consider these tips:

  • Check if your university offers long-term parking for winter breaks
  • Prepare for occasional snow by keeping an ice scraper in your car
  • Verify that your roadside assistance coverage extends to Tennessee
  • Research local car shipping companies for affordable options to transport your vehicle home during extended breaks

By planning ahead and understanding campus parking policies, you can ensure a smooth transition when shipping your car to Tennessee for your college experience.

Military Personnel Icon

Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Tennessee

Tennessee is home to several military installations, making it a crucial hub for service members relocating with their vehicles. Fort Campbell, straddling the Tennessee-Kentucky border, is the largest military base in the state. On-base parking is available, but it’s limited. Many service members opt to live off-base in nearby Clarksville, where parking is generally unrestricted.

For those shipping a car to Tennessee military bases, it’s essential to note that vehicle registration requirements vary. At Fort Campbell, vehicles must be registered within 30 days of arrival. The Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington has similar regulations.

Military families will find numerous resources around these bases. Fort Campbell boasts a large commissary and exchange, while NSA Mid-South offers a Navy Exchange and various family support services. These amenities make car transport to these locations more convenient for military personnel.

When considering Tennessee car shipping options, remember that Sherpa Auto Transport offers a $50 military discount. We sincerely thank all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice.

Whether you’re shipping a car to Arnold Air Force Base or any other military installation in Tennessee, it’s crucial to plan ahead. Contact your base’s transportation office for specific guidance on auto transport procedures and local regulations. This proactive approach will ensure a smooth transition as you relocate to serve our nation in the Volunteer State.

“I used Sherpa to ship my brand new Jeep Wrangler from Tennessee to California. I was super hesitant to have it shipped but timing issues left me with no choice but to. After a lot of research Sherpa seemed to be the best but was still skeptical. However I had a fantastic experience with Sherpa! I had to push my pickup date out twice due to paperwork and the team super responsive and understanding. Keep in mind Sherpa is a broker so they will find a new driver/carrier if you push out a bit. My carrier that I ended up with (Khan Trans Inc) was great and the driver kept me up to date with texts throughout the pick up and delivery. I would definitely ship with Sherpa again!”

Google
★★★★★

“My experience with Sherpa was seamless and smooth – there was excellent communication with the Sherpa team throughout the process. They honored the rate they provided. There were no transportation delays or damage to my vehicle – the driver was excellent who picked up and dropped my vehicle from Nashville TN to San Jose CA. I would highly recommend Sherpa to anyone looking to transport their vehicle – their prices were the best and customer service/representatives were knowledgeable and excellent to work with! 5 stars for my experience!”

Google

“Excellent communication. Quoted a price and that was the final price. The driver`s they arranged were excellent. My car was picked up and delivered hassle free from California to Tennessee in two days. I would call them first I if needed to transport another vehicle.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I needed to transport my car to CA. I was very nervous about finding a good company. Most companies online have not so good reviews and scary customer experiences. I finally found Sherpa and they seemed to be the best of what was out there. I took the risk and booked with them. Thankfully everything went great! The company they went with was helpful and got my car there exactly when they said they would. The only negative is that I had to call the car company to see when they would be able to pick up my car instead they were supposed to call me, but that`s not that big of a deal. The main office was extremely helpful- I called a few times bc I had a lot of questions, and they answered everything and were very nice. I was very pleased with the shipping- no dents, etc. If this is your first time, I would recommend this company.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa`s reps were very professional and friendly. They called and emailed me and they were on the ball. When I received information and it came up a different amount, I called them back and they were very helpful in telling me what to do. I just needed to go in and refresh my page to be able to see the correct figure that is what we agreed upon. Also, the driver was great. He went out of his way to accommodate me. On the day of the pickup, I had a prior commitment and he asked where it was. It was at a restaurant and he checked it out and told me he would meet me there. He called me when he got there, parked across the street, and then walked over to where I was to get my car. He was very personable and respectful. The delivery was great, too. They delivered it right to the house in Tennessee. Sherpa said that if the charge ends up being higher, they would pay the difference up to a certain amount. The ending bill ended up being a little bit more and they covered that amount themselves and I still paid the same price they quoted.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Tennessee, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Tennessee. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
