What our South Carolina customers say about Sherpa:
“My Honda CRV went from South Carolina to Minnesota. I don’t like to pay that much, but Sherpa’s quote was fair. The driver was the sweetest, nicest young man. He dropped me back at my house, so I had to take the car down a little ways because it’s my street. He was so cute. When he left my house, he honked and waved.”
“Setting up the transport was outstanding, very straightforward and transparent. Customer support was really good. The rep, Marvin, had an open line and let me call him whenever I needed to. The car was picked up in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and dropped off in South Carolina. They picked it up on that Thursday, and the guy they contracted with was great.”
“If you want a no hassle easy car transport this is the company!!! I reserched so many companies and read the horrible stories. I was moving from New Jersey to South Carolina and needed 2 cars transported. I called Sherpa and they picked up my cars on the day and time I asked and delivered them on the day I asked early!”

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect South Carolina Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: South Carolina’s location in the Southeast impacts shipping costs. Longer distances, such as shipping from the West Coast, will be more expensive than shorter routes within the region.
- Route: Major interstates like I-95, I-26, and I-85 make car transport to South Carolina’s urban areas more affordable. Rural destinations off these main routes may increase costs.
- Seasonal Factors: South Carolina’s mild winters generally don’t affect car shipping prices. However, summer months can see higher rates due to increased demand and hurricane season considerations.
- Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your car impact shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks will cost more to transport than compact cars.
- Transport Method: Open transport is the most economical option for most vehicles. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection for high-value or classic cars.
- Timing: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can help reduce costs. Rush orders or specific date requirements may increase the price of your car shipment.
- Market Conditions: Supply and demand in the auto transport industry can affect prices. Peak moving seasons, like summer, often see higher rates for car shipping services.
Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your South Carolina car shipping needs. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your South Carolina car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates when transporting your car to or from South Carolina. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost savings.
- Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major interstates like I-95, I-26, or I-85. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove all personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates to increase your chances of finding the most cost-effective auto transport options. Consider adjusting your locations slightly if it means accessing a more efficient route.
- Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer or holidays when shipping your car to or from South Carolina. Off-peak times often offer more competitive rates for auto transport services.

How does South Carolina Car Shipping Work?
Navigating the car shipping process to or from South Carolina doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you’re relocating to enjoy the Palmetto State’s beautiful beaches or moving away from its subtropical climate, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you transport your vehicle with ease:
1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable auto transport company. This will give you an idea of the cost based on factors like your vehicle type and the specific route in South Carolina.
2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car shipping dates. Remember, South Carolina’s humid summers can be busy for auto transport, so book early if possible.
3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash your car and document its condition. Remove personal items and ensure your gas tank is no more than a quarter full. This is especially important if you’re shipping to coastal areas like Charleston or Myrtle Beach, where salt air can affect your vehicle.
4. Meet the Carrier: On pickup day, you’ll meet the auto transport carrier. They’ll likely use major routes like I-95 or I-26, depending on your location in South Carolina.
5. Track Your Shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. South Carolina’s generally mild climate means fewer weather-related delays, but it’s always good to stay updated.
6. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly before signing off. Pay any remaining balance to complete the car shipping process.

South Carolina Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to South Carolina or moving within the state, it’s crucial to understand local vehicle requirements and regulations. South Carolina doesn’t use a specific toll reader system, but if you’re coming from a state that does, remember to remove it to avoid unnecessary charges. The state requires annual vehicle inspections, so schedule one soon after arrival. Vehicle registration in South Carolina is straightforward: you’ll need proof of ownership, a valid ID, and insurance. Complete this process at your local DMV within 45 days of establishing residency.
For those using car shipping services to South Carolina, be aware of the state’s climate. The hot, humid summers can affect your vehicle, so consider having your air conditioning serviced upon arrival. If you’re moving to coastal areas, be mindful of potential salt air exposure, which can accelerate rust.
When settling in South Carolina, set up utilities promptly. Major providers include Duke Energy for electricity and various local water companies depending on your area. For internet, providers like AT&T, Spectrum, and HughesNet are widely available. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll children in local schools. The state’s extensive library system is a great resource, so get your library card early.
If you’re moving away from South Carolina and using auto transport services, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify relevant authorities of your move. When shipping a car out of state, ensure it’s clean and document its condition before transport.
South Carolina’s extensive highway system, including I-95 and I-26, makes car transport relatively smooth. However, be prepared for potential weather-related delays, especially during hurricane season. Whether you’re moving to the bustling capital of Columbia, the historic charm of Charleston, or the beautiful beaches of Myrtle Beach, understanding these local nuances will help ensure a smooth transition when using car shipping services to or from South Carolina.
South Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from South Carolina?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from South Carolina. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from South Carolina?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from South Carolina?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to South Carolina?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Summer Considerations:
- Use a sunshade under your car’s windshield to protect the interior from intense heat.
- Avoid leaving heat-sensitive items in the vehicle during transport.
- Be aware that summer is a peak season for auto transport in South Carolina, especially in coastal areas.
Winter Precautions:
- While snow is rare, occasional ice can occur. Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground.
- Remove snow tires before shipping, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with snow chains.

Seasonal Factors:
- Spring and fall are ideal for car shipping in South Carolina due to milder weather.
- Hurricane season (June to November) may affect coastal auto transport schedules.

Car Shipping for College Students in South Carolina
When considering car shipping to South Carolina for college, it’s crucial to understand campus parking policies. Most universities in South Carolina require students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. For example, at the University of South Carolina, students must register their cars online and display a valid permit. Parking availability varies by campus, so it’s wise to check with your specific school. Many off-campus apartments offer parking, but it’s not always included, so factor this into your housing decision.
For students using auto transport services to bring their cars to South Carolina, consider long-term parking options during breaks. Some campuses offer designated lots for extended parking, but spaces may be limited. It’s best to inquire about this well in advance. Weather in South Carolina is generally mild, so snow tires aren’t necessary. However, be prepared for occasional heavy rains and the rare winter storm.
Before shipping your car to South Carolina, review your insurance policy and roadside assistance coverage. Ensure they’re valid in your new location. Many car shipping companies offer additional insurance options for the transport process, which can provide extra peace of mind. Lastly, if you’re using a car transport service, coordinate your arrival with the delivery to ensure a smooth transition to campus life. With proper planning, shipping a car to your South Carolina university can be a hassle-free experience.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in South Carolina
South Carolina is home to several military installations, making it a hub for service members and their families. Joint Base Charleston, a combined Air Force and Navy facility, offers on-base parking for active duty personnel. However, space can be limited, so some members may need to seek off-base parking options. The surrounding neighborhoods generally have ample street parking, but it’s always wise to check local regulations.
For those stationed at Fort Jackson, the Army’s largest basic training installation, on-base housing often includes designated parking areas. If you’re living off-base, most residential areas near Fort Jackson have sufficient parking space. When it comes to vehicle registration, South Carolina offers a Military Vehicle Registration program, allowing service members to register their vehicles without paying property taxes.
Military families will find numerous resources in the area, including well-stocked commissaries and exchanges at both Joint Base Charleston and Fort Jackson. These facilities offer significant savings on groceries and household items. Additionally, the South Carolina Military Department provides various support services for service members and their families, including financial counseling and employment assistance.
At Sherpa Auto Transport, we’re proud to offer a $50 military discount on our car shipping services to and from South Carolina. We deeply appreciate the sacrifices made by our service members and their families. Whether you’re relocating to a new base or returning home, our team is here to ensure your vehicle arrives safely and on time. Thank you for your service!
Reviews from our South Carolina Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied South Carolina customers:
“I went with Sherpa because of their good reviews and I wasn`t disappointed. They were on call at all times during the process, and the delivery of my car from Pennsylvania to South Carolina went smoothly. The Sherpa folks were in touch with the driver and I got updates along the way. Car arrived in great shape and the remainder of the balance was either given to the driver in cash or Cashiers check upon delivery. Thanks Sherpa for a good delivery and nice customer service. Greg H. NY, NY”
“Great price with their price guarantee, this was our first time shipping a vehicle and it was scary and Alot of uncertainty in who to trust with our car. The carrier ETA transport was fast on pick up and had the car delivered in 4 days from California to south Carolina. Highly recommend them. We saved about a total of $600 compared to other quotes we got and the fact we saved by sending our two bikes inside the SUV. Highly recommend them and will use them again.”
“With so many horror stories and lack of regulations around motor transport companies, I searched over a dozen companies before choosing Sherpa Auto Transport. Reading Yelp reviews helped me narrow my choices because I trust the reviews on Yelp more than other platforms (some transport companies touted good Google reviews but their Yelp reviews were bad). Even upon choosing, I was so nervous but Dan at Sherpa assured me he would make the process a smooth one. I purchased a vehicle and Sherpa contracted with M&G Motors LLC to deliver my vehicle. M&G picked up my vehicle on 9/29 from Leesville, SC and delivered it to me on 9/30 to Wixom, MI. M&G was very responsive throughout the transport commute. Sherpa provided me with a rebate and a free car wash upon delivery of my vehicle. Thank you Sherpa for making the transport of my purchased vehicle a positive and stress free experience. I am not much of a Yelp reviewer, but I wanted to take the time to highlight my experience with Sherpa so that it will assist someone else who is nervously selecting a motor transport company.”
“I called them to transport my car from CA to SC. They were so friendly, provided all information, assured me they will not increase the price after confirming it and they will cover up to 300$ for any rate increase which was a relief after I had terrible experience with auto transport company that increased my rate one day before shipping dramatically (from $1100 to $1800) and refused to refund my deposit and on top billed me $500. I highly recommend using Sherpa. They assigned transport company within 24 hours that was very reliable and I received my car in excellent condition in a week. Again, highly recommended to use them.”
“Loved this company for my AZ to GA car transport! Decided to use Sherpa Auto Transport since the reviews were great. Started the online process and got my quote right then and there, which was valid for a day or 2. Pricing was super competitive and they offered a rebate (currently still waiting for that) but the process was super simple! Sherpa called me the week of my move and confirmed they had a carrier. The entire process was smooth from the signing up, to pick up and car drop off. And I like how they reimbursed for a car wash! I would definitely use this company again.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in South Carolina, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of South Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
