Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Providence customers say about Sherpa:

Google
★★★★★

“This was our first time using a car shipping service. We got quotes from quite a few companies and researched a lot. We chose Sherpa because of their BBB rating as well as customer reviews on multiple sites, including Consumer Reports and Forbes. They were not the least expensive but definitely competetive in terms of pricing. The actual process was SEAMLESS, with incredible communication, fast, and our car was delivered coast-to-coast – from pick-up at our home in California to our son in Rhode Island – within one week!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Quote accurate no changes. Car picked up 2 days after target pick up date. They called me at 12 pm for a 5 pm pick up we were ready to go. Driver texted me to let me know he was coming to premises to pick up at 5 as discussed. Called when arrived. It all went as planned. I had car loaded up to windows. Everything arrived to my destination for my daughter to pick up her vehicle- perfect. Pick up on a Friday delivered less than 48 hours later. Very pleased. I will use Sherpa again.”

Google
★★★★★

“Sherpa did an excellent logistics job moving our vehicle from California to Rhode Island. Kelsea, in particular, was an absolute pleasure to work with and kept us informed throughout the entire process. I would use Sherpa`s services again in a heartbeat.”

Factors that affect Providence Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Providence, RI. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the cost per mile typically decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Providence. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers protection from New England’s varied weather conditions, including snow and road salt in winter.
  • Location Accessibility: Providence’s proximity to major highways like I-95 and I-195 can help reduce costs. However, shipping to more remote areas in Rhode Island may increase prices due to additional transportation time.
  • Seasonal Factors: Car shipping prices to Providence can fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months and January often see higher rates due to increased demand. Winter weather in Providence can also affect shipping times and costs.
  • Vehicle Specifications: The size, weight, and condition of your car impact shipping costs. Larger vehicles or those with low ground clearance may require special handling, potentially increasing the price.
  • Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive rates when shipping your car to or from Providence. Rush or guaranteed delivery services typically come at a premium.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when arranging car transport to or from Providence, RI. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Providence car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-95 or I-195. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during auto transport.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates to increase your options. Consider locations slightly outside Providence for potential savings on your car shipping service.
  • Seasonal timing: If possible, schedule your auto transport during off-peak seasons. Avoiding summer months and holidays can lead to better rates for shipping a car to or from Providence, RI.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Ensure your car is in good running condition to avoid any additional fees or complications during the transport process.

How does Providence Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process to or from Providence, RI, can be a breeze with the right guidance. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you ship your vehicle smoothly:

1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reliable auto transport company. This will give you an idea of the cost based on factors like your car’s make and model, pickup and delivery locations, and preferred shipping method.

2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car shipping service. Remember, with Sherpa Auto Transport, nothing is due upfront to book your shipment.

3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash your car, remove personal items, and perform a basic maintenance check. For Providence residents, consider the city’s weather patterns. In winter, ensure your antifreeze levels are appropriate for the colder New England climate.

4. Meet the Carrier: On pickup day, you or an authorized representative will meet the carrier, hand over the keys, and conduct an inspection. In Providence, be aware of potential traffic on I-95 or I-195, which might affect pickup times.

5. Track Your Shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Your auto transport company should provide regular updates.

6. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car and sign the bill of lading. Pay any remaining balance to complete the service.

When shipping a car to or from Providence, consider the city’s unique aspects. The hilly terrain and narrow streets in some areas might require careful planning for pickup and delivery locations. Also, be mindful of seasonal considerations – summer tourists and winter weather can impact shipping timelines.

When planning car shipping to Providence, RI, it’s essential to be aware of local regulations and prepare for your move. For those using auto transport services, remember to remove your E-ZPass transponder before shipping your vehicle to avoid unexpected toll charges. Rhode Island uses E-ZPass for electronic toll collection on its roads.

Upon arrival, you’ll need to register your vehicle with the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within 30 days. The process involves providing proof of ownership, insurance, and passing a VIN check. Rhode Island also requires annual vehicle inspections, so be prepared to have your car inspected shortly after arrival.

Parking in Providence can be challenging, especially in downtown areas. Consider applying for a residential parking permit if you’ll be living in a neighborhood with restricted street parking. You can do this through the Providence Parking Portal.

When settling in Providence, you’ll need to set up utilities. National Grid provides electricity and gas services, while Providence Water is responsible for water and sewer services. For internet, providers like Cox and Verizon offer high-speed options. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if you have children, enroll them in the Providence Public School District.

If you’re moving away from Providence, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail through USPS, and notify relevant institutions of your address change.

Providence experiences all four seasons, with snowy winters and warm summers. When shipping a car to or from Providence, consider the weather conditions. During winter months, car transport companies may face delays due to snowstorms, so plan accordingly.

The city is well-connected by highways, with I-95 and I-195 running through it, making it convenient for car shipping services to access. Whether you’re moving to enjoy Providence’s rich history, vibrant arts scene, or prestigious universities, proper planning will ensure a smooth transition for both you and your vehicle.

Providence, Rhode Island Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Providence?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Providence. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Providence?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Providence?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Providence?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Providence

When planning car shipping to or from Providence, RI, it’s crucial to consider the city’s seasonal weather patterns. Providence experiences all four seasons distinctly, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.

In winter, Providence often sees heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re scheduling car shipping services during this time:

  • Place a sunshade in your vehicle to protect the interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items that could melt or warp.

Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial when scheduling Providence car shipping. Keep in mind:

  • The busiest times for auto transport in Providence are typically late August and early September, coinciding with college move-in dates.
  • To avoid peak rates and potential delays, consider scheduling your car shipping a few weeks before or after these busy periods.

Car Shipping for College Students in Providence, Rhode Island

When considering car shipping to Providence, Rhode Island for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at local universities. Brown University requires students to register vehicles and purchase parking permits, with limited on-campus parking available. Reviews from our Rhode Island Customers

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Rhode Island customers:

“Sherpa Auto was professional, easy to reach, and reliable from beginning to end. I had direct contact with my driver so I could get live updates on his timing for delivery and pickup. My only complaint is the limitations on weight for filling up the car. 100 pounds is only two big suitcases worth – not ideal for my cross country move. They charge $150 if it’s any heavier than that. Overall, I am very happy with the shipment of my car from Los Angeles to Rhode Island, which took about 7 days.”

“I would highly recommend Sherpa Transport. From the first phone call requesting a quote to the delivery of our car from Rhode Island to Arizona it was a positive experience. They kept us informed every step of the way and the agents were professional and courteous. The driver they assigned us also kept us informed as to his progress along the way across country. The pickup and delivery were on dates that we had asked for. Our car. arrived in perfect condition. The driver arrived at our doorstep on time and again courteous and professional. I would HIGHLY recommend Sherpa Transport.”

“Sherpa was the 2nd company I booked with after cancelling with a randomly chosen shipper who was a nightmare from the start. I was a last minute customer for Sherpa with a narrow pickup window. From booking to pickup to delivery of my new Bronco I could not have had a more pleasant experience. They listened patiently to my concerns, were professional, friendly and efficient. There was never a problem with communication and the car was picked up and delivered in record time, in fact a day before earliest expected date. It arrived without a scratch and pretty clean considering the distance travelled on an open carrier. Sherpa claims to thoroughly vet their drivers which proved to be true for me as the driver was very accommodating, responsive and friendly with an immaculate new truck. My car went straight to destination with no unloading and reloading as some carriers do and communication was constant. Every step of the way was updated, inspection of the vehicle before and after was thorough and detailed. I highly recommend Sherpa auto transport to anyone, especially if unfamiliar and nervous about the process. There are some questionable companies to choose from out there. Sherpa is not one of them! Very satisfied customer.”

Consumer Affairs

“The driver who picked my daughter’s car was very friendly and professional. He called about ten miles away and we we able to find a convenient meeting spot (mall parking area) where the vehicle could be placed onto the carrier. He was very reassuring as I’ve never used this type of service before, I even had his cell number if I wanted to check in over the next few days. Although it was an expensive service for an average car, I was happy to have the auto safety shipped and not have my daughter drive a long distance alone. I would definitely use Sherpa again!”

BBB
★★★★★

“I was burned pretty badly by a moving broker last year, so I was pretty nervous to use a broker to ship my newly acquired and inoperable Jeep CJ7 enclosed from Rhode Island to Louisiana. I did my homework and called around. The guys at Sherpa “sales” were very nice (but all brokers are – or should be), and did their best to assuage my fears. A note on auto shipping brokers – very few companies are able to do all auto ships. Even if you find a company that CAN move your auto with their own truck ($$$$), chances are good that they won’t be able to do your specific move, and will reserve the right to broker your shipment regardless. Sherpa came in around the middle in terms of price. What made me choose their services was their “price lock” policy, where they will dig into their commission to up the bid on your shipment, if necessary. This means it’s worth their while to provide you with a quality quote. Other businesses will underquote, and then charge you later for the difference in the ultimate bid price. In my case, they had to throw in $175 of their $300 commission to get someone to pick up the shipment. What this means is that if I had gone with Montway, who quoted me about $300 less, I’d be out almost $500 when all was said and done. Sherpa kept me updated, for the most part. I got a bit worried when I hadn’t heard from them a couple of days before the pickup window. I emailed and called, and got prompt responses. They had a little trouble finding a taker for the job, but ultimately came through. Pickup was ONE DAY past the three day window they’d predicted, and delivery was right on time (and very fast, pickup was on Thursday, deliver was on the following Tuesday). The shipper they used was Best West Trans. They were great, driver was friendly and helpful. Ultimately, my fears of this process were totally unwarranted (or, at least help me find a quality broker).”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Providence, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Rhode Island. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel.
