Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Rhode Island customers say about Sherpa:

Google
★★★★★

“This was our first time using a car shipping service. We got quotes from quite a few companies and researched a lot. We chose Sherpa because of their BBB rating as well as customer reviews on multiple sites, including Consumer Reports and Forbes. They were not the least expensive but definitely competetive in terms of pricing. The actual process was SEAMLESS, with incredible communication, fast, and our car was delivered coast-to-coast – from pick-up at our home in California to our son in Rhode Island – within one week!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I would highly recommend Sherpa Transport. From the first phone call requesting a quote to the delivery of our car from Rhode Island to Arizona it was a positive experience. They kept us informed every step of the way and the agents were professional and courteous. The driver they assigned us also kept us informed as to his progress along the way across country. The pickup and delivery were on dates that we had asked for.”

Factors that affect Rhode Island Car Shipping Prices

Vehicle Size
  • Distance and Route: Rhode Island’s compact size means shorter in-state trips, but shipping to or from other states can increase costs. The state’s proximity to major Northeast corridors like I-95 and I-295 can help keep prices competitive for long-distance transport.
  • Seasonal Factors: Rhode Island’s weather can impact car shipping prices. Winter storms may cause delays or require enclosed transport, while summer’s peak season can drive up costs due to increased demand.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your car affect shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks will cost more to transport than compact cars, which are common in Rhode Island’s urban areas.
  • Transport Method: Open carriers are the most cost-effective and widely used option for car shipping to and from Rhode Island. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, offers extra protection for luxury or classic cars during harsh New England weather.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Urban areas like Providence or Warwick often have lower shipping costs compared to rural locations. Consider meeting the carrier in a more accessible area to potentially reduce your car shipping expenses.
  • Timing and Flexibility: Being flexible with your pickup and delivery dates can lead to better rates. However, Rhode Island’s busy summer tourism season may affect availability and prices for car transport services.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. If your car isn’t running, inform your auto transport company, as this may require special equipment and increase the cost.

Understanding these factors can help you plan your Rhode Island car shipping more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Rhode Island auto transport at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates, especially for standard vehicles.
  • Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and drop-off points near major Rhode Island interstates like I-95 or I-295. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates. Carriers may offer discounts for filling empty spots on their trucks.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Rhode Island’s car shipping rates may fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months often see higher demand, so booking in the off-season could lead to savings.
  • Opt for terminal-to-door or door-to-terminal: While Sherpa specializes in door-to-door service, choosing a terminal for either pickup or delivery can sometimes reduce costs.

  • Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company. This will give you a clear idea of costs based on factors like your vehicle type, pickup and delivery locations, and preferred shipping method.
  • Book your shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car transport service. Remember, nothing is typically due upfront, and you’ll only pay when a carrier is assigned.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Before the car shipping date, wash your car, document any existing damage, remove personal items, and perform basic maintenance. For Rhode Island’s unpredictable weather, ensure your car is ready for potential temperature fluctuations during transport.
  • Meet the carrier: On pickup day, you or an authorized representative will meet the carrier, hand over the keys, and conduct an inspection. If you’re shipping to Rhode Island, consider the state’s compact size and discuss the exact delivery location, especially in urban areas like Providence.
  • Track your shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Your auto transport company should provide regular updates as your vehicle travels along Rhode Island’s key routes like I-95 or I-295.
  • Receive your vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly and sign the bill of lading. If you’re new to Rhode Island, this is a great time to ask the driver about local driving tips, like navigating the Ocean State’s many bridges.

When shipping a car to or from Rhode Island, it’s crucial to be aware of local vehicle requirements and regulations. Rhode Island uses the E-ZPass system for electronic toll collection. If you’re moving away, remember to remove your E-ZPass transponder to avoid unnecessary charges. For those moving to the Ocean State, you can easily obtain an E-ZPass online or at local service centers.

Rhode Island requires annual vehicle inspections. New residents must have their vehicles inspected within 5 days of registration. The car registration process in Rhode Island is straightforward: you’ll need proof of ownership, a valid ID, and proof of insurance. You’ll also need to pay registration fees, which vary based on vehicle weight.

When settling in Rhode Island, consider these helpful tips:

  • Set up utilities: National Grid provides electricity and gas, while water services vary by municipality.
  • Internet providers: Cox and Verizon are popular choices in Rhode Island.
  • Register to vote: You can do this online or at your local DMV.
  • School enrollment: Contact your local school district for registration requirements.

Rhode Island Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Rhode Island?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Rhode Island. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Rhode Island?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Rhode Island?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Rhode Island?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Rhode Island

When planning car shipping to or from Rhode Island, it’s crucial to consider the state’s distinct seasonal weather patterns. Rhode Island experiences all four seasons, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.

In winter, Rhode Island often sees heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re shipping a car during this time:

  • Remove snow tires or chains before transport
  • Ensure pickup/drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping
  • Remove any items that could freeze and potentially damage your vehicle

Spring and fall in Rhode Island are generally mild, making these seasons ideal for car transport. However, be prepared for occasional rain showers that could delay shipping.

During the summer, temperatures can rise significantly. If you’re using car shipping services in warmer months:

  • Consider using a sunshade to protect your car’s interior
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle

Beyond weather, timing is crucial for efficient car shipping in Rhode Island. The state hosts several universities, so expect increased demand for auto transport services around the start and end of academic semesters. To avoid potential delays and higher costs, consider scheduling your car transport a few weeks before or after these peak periods.

Additionally, Rhode Island sees an influx of tourists during the summer months, particularly in coastal areas. This can lead to busier roads and potentially impact car shipping schedules. Planning your auto transport during the shoulder season (late spring or early fall) may result in smoother, more cost-effective service.

By considering these seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient experience when using car shipping services to or from the Ocean State.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Rhode Island

When considering car shipping to Rhode Island for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at various universities. At Brown University, students must register their vehicles and purchase a parking permit. On-campus parking is limited, so plan ahead. University of Rhode Island offers parking permits for residents and commuters, with designated lots for each. Rhode Island College requires all vehicles to display a valid parking permit, available for purchase online.

For students living off-campus, check if your apartment includes parking. If not, research nearby parking options before shipping your car to Rhode Island. During winter breaks, most universities offer extended parking, but confirm this with your school’s transportation office before arranging auto transport.

Rhode Island winters can be harsh, so consider snow tires for your vehicle. When using car shipping services to bring your vehicle, ensure it’s prepared for the climate. Also, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage remains valid in Rhode Island.

Before you ship a car to Rhode Island for college, research your specific university’s parking policies, consider off-campus options if necessary, and prepare your vehicle for the local weather. By planning ahead, you’ll ensure a smooth transition and avoid parking headaches throughout your academic year.

Reviews from our Rhode Island Customers

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Rhode Island customers:

“Sherpa Auto was professional, easy to reach, and reliable from beginning to end. I had direct contact with my driver so I could get live updates on his timing for delivery and pickup. My only complaint is the limitations on weight for filling up the car. 100 pounds is only two big suitcases worth – not ideal for my cross country move. They charge $150 if it’s any heavier than that. Overall, I am very happy with the shipment of my car from Los Angeles to Rhode Island, which took about 7 days.”

Consumer Affairs

“My experience in shipping my daughter’s car from Rhode Island to California was outstanding. Everyone I dealt with at Sherpa gave me accurate and timely information. The quoted price never changed. I am so glad I listened to previous customers and their feedback. I would use Sherpa again and give them a 5 Star Rating.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa was the 2nd company I booked with after cancelling with a randomly chosen shipper who was a nightmare from the start. I was a last minute customer for Sherpa with a narrow pickup window. From booking to pickup to delivery of my new Bronco I could not have had a more pleasant experience. They listened patiently to my concerns, were professional, friendly and efficient. There was never a problem with communication and the car was picked up and delivered in record time, in fact a day before earliest expected date. It arrived without a scratch and pretty clean considering the distance travelled on an open carrier. Sherpa claims to thoroughly vet their drivers which proved to be true for me as the driver was very accommodating, responsive and friendly with an immaculate new truck. My car went straight to destination with no unloading and reloading as some carriers do and communication was constant. Every step of the way was updated, inspection of the vehicle before and after was thorough and detailed. I highly recommend Sherpa auto transport to anyone, especially if unfamiliar and nervous about the process. There are some questionable companies to choose from out there. Sherpa is not one of them! Very satisfied customer.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Quote accurate no changes. Car picked up 2 days after target pick up date. They called me at 12 pm for a 5 pm pick up we were ready to go. Driver texted me to let me know he was coming to premises to pick up at 5 as discussed. Called when arrived. It all went as planned. I had car loaded up to windows. Everything arrived to my destination for my daughter to pick up her vehicle- perfect. Pick up on a Friday delivered less than 48 hours later. Very pleased. I will use Sherpa again.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Great service. Very communicative and polite. Great price. I had my car shipped from CA to RI. Only took them a week! My car was safe. No scratches or damages. I would definitely recommend and will be using them again when I need.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Rhode Island, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Rhode Island. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
