What our Erie customers say about Sherpa:
“I had never needed to transport a vehicle ANYWHERE so I was nervous about choosing a company. I chose Sherpa Auto Transport because of the positive online reviews. I needed to transport a Ford Mustang from Alabama to Pennsylvania. I requested a quote online and in minutes I not only received an e-mailed quote, I received a phone call from Patrick at Sherpa Auto Transport.”
“I set this transfer up for a friend who was moving back to Pennsylvania from Florida. The Sherpa agent was amazing in that he was reassuring and very knowledgeable. He notified us when the transport company was contracted and for the price agreed upon and again when the driver was on his way and approximately when he would arrive.”
“The coordinator was pretty nice about the setup of the transport. He texted me to let me know that they were looking for a driver and that as soon as one is located, he would contact me. He contacted me a couple of times. The only thing was I asked for a 24-hour notice to get to our truck and ready to go in Erie.”

Factors that affect Erie Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Erie’s location on Lake Erie and its proximity to major cities like Cleveland and Buffalo can affect shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices for car transport to or from Erie, PA.
- Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to Erie. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers protection from Erie’s harsh winters and occasional lake-effect snow for high-value vehicles.
- Location Accessibility: Erie’s easy access to I-79 and I-90 can help keep auto transport costs down. However, shipping to more remote areas outside the city may increase prices.
- Seasonal Demand: Car shipping prices to Erie may fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months often see higher demand, while winter weather can impact transport schedules and costs.
- Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger vehicles or those with low ground clearance may cost more to ship. Inoperable cars also increase shipping costs due to additional equipment needed for loading.
- Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive rates when shipping a car to or from Erie. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates typically come at a premium.
Understanding these factors can help you plan your car shipping to Erie more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Erie car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling vehicles along major interstates like I-79 and I-90.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost savings.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways. For example, choosing a spot close to the intersection of I-79 and I-90 can help reduce fuel costs for carriers.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during transport.
- Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates to increase your options. Consider locations slightly outside Erie if it means a more competitive rate for your auto transport needs.
- Consider seasonal timing: Erie’s weather can impact car shipping. Summer months may offer more favorable conditions and potentially lower rates compared to winter, when lake-effect snow can complicate transport.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Erie?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Erie?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Erie
When planning car shipping to or from Erie, PA, it’s crucial to consider the city’s unique seasonal weather patterns. Erie experiences all four seasons distinctly, with particularly harsh winters that can impact auto transport logistics.
During winter months (November to March), Erie car shipping can be challenging due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping.
- Remove any items that might freeze and potentially damage your vehicle.
Summer in Erie (June to August) brings milder weather, but consider these tips for car transport during warmer months:
- Use a sunshade to protect your car’s interior from heat damage.
- Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle before shipping.
Timing is also crucial when shipping a car to or from Erie. As home to several colleges, including Penn State Behrend, car shipping services see increased demand at the beginning and end of academic semesters. To avoid potential delays and higher costs, consider scheduling your auto transport a few weeks before or after these peak times.
By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient car shipping experience to or from Erie, PA. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on transporting your vehicle safely and efficiently.
Car Shipping for College Students in Erie, Pennsylvania

At Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, students need to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. On-campus residents have designated lots, while commuters use specific areas. Gannon University also requires parking passes, with different zones for residents and commuters. Both universities offer limited winter break parking, but it’s best to confirm availability in advance. When shipping a car to Erie for college, remember that snow tires are essential for winter driving. Students should also verify their insurance coverage, including roadside assistance, extends to their new location. If you’re using car transport services to bring your vehicle to Erie, coordinate with your auto transport company to ensure delivery aligns with move-in dates and parking availability. Planning ahead for these factors will make your transition to college life in Erie much smoother.
Reviews from our Pennsylvania Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Pennsylvania customers:
“I set this transfer up for a friend who was moving back to Pennsylvania from Florida. The Sherpa agent was amazing in that he was reassuring and very knowledgeable. He notified us when the transport company was contracted and for the price agreed upon and again when the driver was on his way and approximately when he would arrive.”
“Writing a review because I relied heavily on these while deciding which broker company to go with to find someone to transport my car from Utah to Michigan. Some background information…I am a gal in my early 20’s that has NO IDEA how these things work. So if you are in the same position as me, this review is for you haha. I first decided to go through with another company who ended up not being authorized which made me extremely nervous while looking for a new company. I found Sherpa on Forbes and after reading the reviews and seeing that if the car doesn’t get picked up by a driver towards the end of the 5 day period you agree on, they contribute their own money, I decided to go through with Sherpa. One thing I learned is to never put down a down payment with a broker. This is apparently a sketchy practice. Sherpa DOES ask for a card to be on file, but they DO NOT charge it until they find someone to pick up your car. In my case, they contributed $150 of the $300 broker fee towards the payment for the actual driver so I ended up paying Sherpa $150 dollars. I will say, I was nervous that my car wouldn’t get picked up within the 5 day time period, but Sherpa found a driver on the 4th day and it was picked up that same day. They stayed in communication with the company that transported my car the entire way. I would 100% use Sherpa again in the future if I need to transport my car somewhere.”
“If you’ve never used a transport company, read this first . . . One thing to know is if you fill out any form online, you will be bombarded with thirty phone calls, texts, and emails — 30 for each. It was non-stop. My fault for not thinking. Next thing to know is that there are many scam artists who will take your money. Nothing against call centers in another country but the manipulating tactics of these “salesman” made me uncomfortable. We had two cars to transport from south florida to San Diego. Our sons are both marines newly stationed in CA and they needed their cars. I spoke to another transport company who quote $2500 per car. When I said I wanted to get other quotes, I was sternly informed that I would not find nothing better. Lol. The way transports work is that your “transport need” gets posted on a “board” where the actual transporters or transport companies will bid on them. They need their transport truck to be filled. Sometimes, if the quote the company you called (which is a middle man, not the transporter) doesn’t get filled, you will get a call from that company asking you for more money to entice. Transporter to take your bid to transport your cars. You will deal with NONE of that with Sherpa Transport. They guarantee the first price quote in writing that you accept. And there is not a single fee or hidden charge after that. I had such a bad experience with the dozens of calls and abusive quotes that I asked the Sherpa agent how this whole thing works. He as honest and explained it all to me. Then he explained they only with with insured vetted transporters. The experience with the transporter was incredible. The dispatcher called me a few days early and communicated with me the name of river and time window. Then the actual driver called me. He was an Angel! He was so kind and friendly. His truck was top notch and IMMACULATE! I knew the cars would be safe. We paid around $1300 each ($2600 total). Considering the insurance costs, gas, cost to maintain those trucks, and time, it was worth every penny. But the peace of mind was out of this world! I had a safe feeling with Sherpa. I spoke to several agents because my first agent was off the next day when I was due to sign. Every person I spoke to was highly respectful and helpful (night and day to the other companies I spoke to). Note that you have 24 hours to take the quote. You won’t have to worry, you are making the best decision. Great job Sherpa! And reward your agents! They are well trained and caring which is hard to find in this day and age”
“First time user. Our car was totaled 500 miles from home, but I was retaining my car via a salvage title. I needed the car moved from Philadelphia PA to Chillicothe OH. I hired Sherpa who served as the transport broker. They subcontracted to Skyfall Auto Transport. Both worked together very well. My vehicle arrived in the promised delivery window. The specific day & time shifted due to factors beyond their control (weather, traffic and other vehicles they transported), but they did a good job keeping me updated. I would use this company again.”
“I would definitely recommend Sherpa Auto Transport. Marvin, was very courteous, patient and helpful with getting me set up with a driver. I needed to transport my son’s Toyota Camry from Philadelphia, PA to Phoenix, AZ. I spoke with Marvin early in the morning, a driver reached out to me before noon the same day. The driver was very nice. He emailed me the Bill of Lading and also provided link to track my vehicle from when it was picked up to when it arrived in AZ. He delivered the vehicle earlier than expected. I will be referring them.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Erie, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Pennsylvania. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
