Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Gresham customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Everything was great from the beginning to the end. The Sherpa reps were very responsive to any questions that I had via email and phone. It was very easy to make a change when I needed to change my pickup date at the last minute. The driver, Silvio, communicated all along the way and even arrived ahead of schedule. He was great to work with and took very good care of my new car.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Getting started with Sherpa was really easy. I ordered it through the website, and then they contacted me and set everything up over the phone. The Sherpa customer service person knew what he was talking about, was really familiar with the process of transporting autos, was very professional and knowledgeable. I had the car transported from Oregon to Ohio and I had a time frame for the pick-up. They worked with me with that time frame and I gave them two dates that I really needed to be picked up by, and they came on the first date and they picked it up, and then they had it delivered to me four days later.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“My daughter moved from Oregon to North Carolina. We were overwhelmed by all the car transport services and heard several scams were out there. I was so impressed with Sherpa. I paid for the 5 day pick up and they were able to pick up her car next day. The driver contacted me and let me know that he had extra room on his truck and to load up my daughters car. 7 days later her car arrived in perfect condition.”

Factors that affect Gresham Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Gresham, OR. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, as fuel consumption and driver time increase.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Gresham. Enclosed trailers, while offering extra protection from Oregon’s occasional rain and road debris, are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship to Gresham due to the space they occupy and their weight.
  • Route Accessibility: Gresham’s proximity to major highways like I-84 and I-205 can help reduce shipping costs. However, if your pickup or delivery location is in a more remote area of Oregon, it may increase the price.
  • Seasonal Factors: Car shipping to Gresham can be influenced by weather conditions. Winter snow in the nearby Cascade Mountains might affect routes and timing, potentially impacting costs.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. If your car doesn’t start or roll, it will require special equipment, increasing the shipping cost to Gresham.
  • Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive rates when shipping your car to or from Gresham. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates typically come at a premium.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Gresham, OR. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Gresham car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling vehicles along I-84 or I-205.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major highways like I-84 or US-26. Consider areas like Wood Village or Troutdale for easy access and potential savings.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item security during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates. Flexibility allows carriers to optimize their schedules, potentially lowering your Gresham auto transport costs.
  • Consider seasonality: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer. Shipping your car to or from Gresham during off-peak times may result in better rates.
  • Leverage Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise: While shopping around is tempting, remember that Sherpa’s quotes are realistic and guaranteed. Our Price Lock Promise ensures you won’t pay more than quoted, providing peace of mind for your car shipping needs.

Gresham, Oregon Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Gresham?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Gresham. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Gresham?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Gresham?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Gresham?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Gresham

When planning car shipping to or from Gresham, OR, it’s crucial to consider the seasonal weather patterns that can impact your auto transport experience. Gresham experiences a temperate climate with distinct seasons, each presenting unique challenges for car shipping services.

In winter, Gresham can see occasional snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re shipping a car during this time:

  • Ensure your vehicle is equipped with all-season tires, as carriers cannot transport cars with snow chains.
  • Choose pickup and drop-off locations on level ground to prevent issues with icy inclines.
  • Remove any items from your car that could freeze and potentially damage the interior.

Spring and fall in Gresham are generally mild, making them ideal seasons for car transport. However, be prepared for occasional rain showers that could delay pickup or delivery.

Summers in Gresham are warm and dry. When shipping a car during this season:

  • Consider using a sunshade to protect your car’s interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle before transport.

Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial when scheduling Gresham car shipping. The city experiences increased demand for auto transport services during certain periods:

To secure the best rates and ensure timely service, consider booking your car shipping a few weeks before or after these peak periods. Reviews from our Oregon Customers

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Oregon customers:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I’ve had experiences with really shady characters ’cause I moved from Oregon to Texas two years ago, and I was ripped off the first time for a couple of $1,000. I couldn’t believe how many dishonest people there are in the middle of that. They don’t want an inventory from you because if you give them an inventory then that’s everything that you wanted and they can’t give you this sham of, “Oh, we didn’t know you wanted to move that too.” I had a 1,500 piece inventory with dimensions for everything, and they didn’t want to see it. It was a very difficult experience. I heard it was the same thing with transporting cars, so I was very careful. I went to the Better Business Bureau website and the only company I was gonna use was the one that had an A rating. Sherpa was one of the several companies that were recommended on the site. I called five people, and Sherpa had the most congenial salesman. He also made me a guarantee right up front that it was gonna cost me a certain amount of money. They had to use their commission to pay for the driver ’cause they couldn’t find somebody at the price they gave me. Sherpa was really awesome. Plus, they were very efficient. Every phase of the operation was documented and they sent me an email or a text on every phase. They also got me in touch with the driver and he made me aware of everything that was taking place at the pickup, the delivery and his transit. They were very professional.”

“We’re from Arlington, Texas and our son is in the Coast Guard. We had to ship a Honda CR-V to him in Oregon. It was a personal vehicle. We looked at three transport companies and ended up with Sherpa. I was able to check out their office in Tennessee. There was actually a physical location. The company also had good recommendations and things with the Better Business Bureau. I mostly communicated with them by email and I had one phone call. Customer service handled everything great and I was very pleased. They gave me a good quote and I felt pretty confident with them. Their quote seemed to be a little bit higher compared to the other companies that I went with, but I felt I was gonna get a better situation. The quote was very accurate compared to the other ones. The transport was 1,500 miles and it took about four days to get to Oregon. It was quicker than they said it was gonna be. They brought the car right to where my son lives. They were just right down the street from his apartment.”

Consumer Affairs

“I went through a lot of auto moving companies online trying to verify and make sure that they were affiliated with the Better Business Bureau. I found some. I had a lot of emails and phone calls for a long time after I made my selection. My selection was not based on price, but I based it on the fact that the company was very qualified to do the move for me. It was a big deal because it was a special car to me. I opted to go with Sherpa. The fact that Sherpa paid to be with ConsumerAffairs was part of the selling for me. I had one gentleman who said, “We don’t need them.” They didn’t need the rating. I told him that just for his attitude, I was not gonna choose their company and thanked him for his time. It was a simple yes or no question on whether they were rated. He didn’t need to bash them. Sherpa did a great job. They sent videos of the car as did I before it left my home. They came right to my house, picked up the car in my neighborhood, and shipped it all the way to Oregon from Indiana. Everything was on time and the car was in great shape. My 23-year old son was very impressed with the whole process and he took care of it there on that end.”

“I was impressed with Sylvia from Sherpa, especially the way that she dealt with the business of getting the car transported. There were also several follow-up calls with other employees and gentlemen that would be calling me or giving me information. The guy picked it up at 11:00 AM on the 9th, and then they headed north. Then they had a three to five-day window. It turned out that the Sherpa transport was an enclosed trailer, not a truck cargo trailer. At that time, there were 12 feet of snow over at Tahoe on the ground. He got up to the border of Oregon and Washington, and that was the only path that he had to go through, and they had closed the paths. When they reopened the path, he had a three-wheeled trailer and a very nice tow truck but he had to have chains on the trailer but he didn’t have chains. He was held up for at least 24 to 36 hours before he got through that. Then he delivered it at 9 o’clock at night. I live rurally and there are no street lights out there. The driver was a young guy and he was exceptional. He parked in the road, which nobody came by and he got it off the trailer, and then I pulled it into my garage. It arrived perfectly, in condition.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I live in Oregon and my son was going back to school in Pennsylvania. We were shipping his car, so he’d have his car while he was there. The quote was exactly the same and it wasn’t cheap. I know there are places that will do it for cheaper, but it’s worth it for everybody to have insurance and be bonded and not just look up somebody on Craigslist saying, “I’ll drive your car 3,000 miles.” People are very concerned about shipping their car, in our case, 3,000 miles away and then if anything had gone wrong, my son would have been on his own trying to figure it out. My whole experience was very positive. The Sherpa drivers sounded wonderful and they were so prompt. We live across from a convenience store with a big parking lot and our street’s not narrow, but there’s a lot of cars. When the guy came to pick up my son’s car, we met him across the street so that he could load it. He then did the review, checked it out, and gave me the pink sheet.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Gresham, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Oregon. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
