Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.

  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

They were very responsive.”

“My Transporter was so personal and good at his profession. I saw a video of him loading it onto his trailer. He picked up on day stated & dropped off as promised. Not a scratch on it. He drove it right into my carport in front of my apt. Very pleased. No worries.”

Factors that affect Bend Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location
Pickup Window
Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey affects car shipping costs to and from Bend, OR. Longer distances typically result in higher prices, but the cost per mile often decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Bend. Enclosed carriers offer extra protection but are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Location Accessibility: Bend’s location in central Oregon, away from major interstate highways, can affect shipping costs. Urban areas are generally cheaper to ship to than rural locations.
  • Seasonal Factors: Bend’s weather can impact car shipping prices. Winter snow and icy conditions may increase costs and delivery times, while summer is typically busier and more expensive for auto transport.
  • Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Non-running cars are also pricier to transport as they require special equipment.
  • Timing and Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can reduce costs. Rush orders or specific date requirements typically increase the price of car shipping services to Bend.

Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your Bend, OR car transport needs. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Bend car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling vehicles from the same area.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers greater flexibility and lower rates for most cars.
  • Optimize pickup/dropoff locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways like US-97 or US-20. This can reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your overall car shipping price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before transport. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during shipping.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Bend auto transport. Carriers may offer discounts for filling empty spots in their schedules.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer when demand for car shipping services is highest. Planning your Bend, OR auto transport during off-peak times may result in more competitive pricing.

Bend, Oregon Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Bend?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Bend. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Bend?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Bend?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Bend?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Bend

When planning car shipping to or from Bend, OR, it’s crucial to consider the city’s unique seasonal weather patterns. Bend experiences a high desert climate with significant temperature variations throughout the year, which can impact your auto transport experience.

In winter, Bend often sees heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re scheduling car shipping services during this time:

  • Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers cannot transport vehicles with them attached.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent issues with icy inclines.
  • Remove any items from your vehicle that could freeze and potentially damage the interior.

Summer in Bend can bring high temperatures, so when you ship a car during warmer months:

  • Consider using a sunshade to protect your vehicle’s interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items that could melt or warp in high temperatures.

Bend’s popularity as an outdoor recreation destination means car transport demand can spike during peak tourist seasons. To avoid potential delays and higher costs:

  • Book your Bend car shipping well in advance for summer and winter holiday periods.
  • Consider scheduling your auto transport during shoulder seasons (spring and fall) for potentially lower rates and faster service.

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smoother car shipping experience to or from Bend, OR. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on shipping a car to this beautiful high desert city.

Consumer Affairs

“Sherpa is reliable and easy to talk to. They get back to you quickly. They`re pretty straightforward about the whole process and let you know when everything`s gonna happen or roundabout. The trucking companies getting them connected is something just trying with the companies trying to get them together on everything. But as far as logistics-wise, it wasn`t a problem. I`ve dealt with other trucking companies before and this was a lot easier. They were upfront about the price. They initially came up with an initial price and then a week later called me up and said that the market shifted a little bit and they would see if they could reset me a price for that. It came in a couple of hundred dollars less than they originally quoted, which was nice. They told us if something went awry within a couple of hundred dollars, they would pay for it, which was cool. They also said that they`ll take care of the actual transport company, they`ll mitigate between that company and me, and then they`ll call me directly and get all that squared away.”

“I transported a Ford Escape thru Sherpa. When I called them, they had a driver available that day and had the car delivered in five days. Their reps were very pleasant. They were also helpful in reminding me to take pictures of the car and talking me through some of the paperwork that would be coming my way, which was not something the other companies I called did at all. They also let you know that they would contribute a percentage of money if the amount that we had agreed to didn`t produce a driver. Aside from that, the quote that they gave me was very fair considering the service I got from them because the other ones were lower, but they weren`t able to produce. In the end, the price I paid was exactly what they told me it would be, so that was very good. As for the driver, he was a sweetheart. We had a little bit of discussion about his family and where he lived, so he was very personable. The car arrived in good shape and had not gotten the wash that they talked about, but that was only if the car turned out to be filthy, which it was not. All in all, their service was amazing and they would be the company I would recommend to everyone.”

Consumer Affairs

“The rep that I talked to was great. He contacted me soon after I put in a request for a bid. He called me back pretty quickly and gave me a detailed rundown of what it would cost and what the process was and did a lot of follow-up. Sherpa was great. They were better than some of the other companies that I reached out to. The driver was nice. They`re independent contractors. He showed up kind of late in the evening, but he was good. He knew what he was doing. The LLC company that did the actual shipment was also nice. I sent a cashier`s check but they wanted to do the cash on the other side, so I had to send a cashier`s check from my bank account across to Fayetteville in, and the truck got caught in snowstorms. So, it wasn`t gonna get there in time. But they worked with me and I did Zelle transfers to them and that worked out fine. When I had this issue with the check, I would leave a message and Sherpa always called me back. So they were great to work with. I was very happy dealing with them.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I`ve used Sherpa in the past, so I looked at them. Compared to the other companies, the price was in the same ballpark. I had good luck with them in the past, so I reused them. I couldn`t have anything better to say about them. They were absolutely great. The delivery driver was beyond great. They got really good communication and everything was really professional. I’m completely happy with their service. So I couldn`t ask for anything more. The cost was up there a little bit but that was probably due to the way the economy and everything is right now. I would definitely go back to them again.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Excellent service. Car was picked up and delivered exactly as promised. Other auto shipping services quoted lower prices then tacked on insurance charges and other fees that were included in Sherpa`s original quote. I would recommend Sherpa to my friends.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Bend, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Oregon. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
