Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Oklahoma City customers say about Sherpa:

Google
★★★★★

“Sherpa lived up to its 4.9 star rating when I inquired about transporting a vehicle. The bill of lading was electronic and professional, I received an email after delivery before the driver left the drop off location. Heck Sherpa even offered to reimburse us up to $20 for a car wash if you happened to pick up some dust, dirt or pollen along the way. That kind of customer service just makes good sense in my book! It just may make the next long distance purchase like this a little less complicated and lot less stressful. Much appreciated, Dennis & Robbin Enid Oklahoma

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Reviewed and contacted several auto transport co, was not happy with any of the reviews or conversation I had with the reps. Reach out to Sherpa and admit was a little skeptic because they answer all my questions, explain the process thoroughly and gave a binding quote which the other transport co. did not do. Sherpa rep was very patience and honest when answering questions and did not rush me to make a decision. I am truly satisfied with Sherpa and the carrier and will used them again.”

Sherpa was quick and efficient at answering my questions, finding a driver, and making pick up and delivery times. The car arrived without any scratches or difficulties. Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Oklahoma City. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the cost per mile typically decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport in Oklahoma City. Enclosed trailers, while offering better protection from weather and road debris, are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Location Accessibility: Oklahoma City’s central location and access to major highways like I-35, I-40, and I-44 can help keep shipping costs down. Rural pickups or deliveries outside the city may increase prices.
  • Seasonal Factors: Oklahoma City’s weather can affect car shipping prices. Extreme summer heat or winter storms may impact transport schedules and costs. Peak moving seasons, typically summer months, can also lead to higher prices due to increased demand.
  • Vehicle Specifications: The size, weight, and condition of your vehicle influence shipping costs. Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks common in Oklahoma, may cost more to transport than standard cars.
  • Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can often result in lower car shipping costs. Rush or guaranteed delivery services to or from Oklahoma City will typically incur additional fees.
  • Market Conditions: Fuel prices and overall demand for auto transport services in the Oklahoma City area can cause fluctuations in shipping costs throughout the year.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Oklahoma City car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is typically more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates while still providing reliable service.
  • Optimize pickup/drop-off locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient spots near major interstates like I-35, I-40, or I-44. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your price.
  • Remove personal items: Empty your vehicle before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about personal belongings during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates. Carriers may offer discounts for filling spots on existing routes.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to/from Oklahoma City may be more affordable during off-peak seasons. Avoid busy summer months or holiday periods when possible.
  • Utilize Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise: While shopping around is common, Sherpa’s upfront pricing and Price Lock Promise ensure you won’t face unexpected costs, providing peace of mind for your car shipping needs.

“Ist time to use an auto shipper. I chose Sherpa because of Chris upfront clear explanation of what is involve with shipping a vehicle. I appreciated calling the 250 broker fee instead of a deposit. The car was shipped from Denver to Oklahoma City. I did not receive clearance to ship until just after noon on Wednesday. I called Chris-he released my contract to picked up from Wednesday through the following Tuesday. This gives the best opportunity to be picked up within 5 business days. Within 36 hours it was on a truck. Sherpa negotiated with the trucking company without changing my total cost. The driver kept me up to date on his location and estimated time of arrival. When came time to me we were actually follow our truck at the arrival point. Our new vehicle was in excellent shape except for a lille road dirt. Used the free Sherpa car wash -now all is excellent. I would use Sherpa again- Thank you Chris!! PS the driver was very polite and helpful also!!”

“The rep was very helpful and courteous. I was very satisfied with Sherpa and would definitely recommend them to other people. They were explaining to me that they were the only ones who was offering the price lock. I was very happy with that and they lived up to that expectation when I had to change the address a week after. The driver was very prompt with answering, giving expected time of arrivals, and keeping the communication lines open.”

“From the very start, my interactions with the reps were very easy and they communicated very well with me. The driver was very good as well. Very professional. My antique vehicle was picked up in Jacksonville, Florida then two days later, it was unloaded and delivered here in Oklahoma City. I was very satisfied with Sherpa Auto. It was excellent.”

“Once my pick up was scheduled, our vehicle was delivered safely and on-time. We had some delays, but they were on the part of the dealership. We are very happy with all aspects of the delivery and will let others know. Thanks!”

“We were very happy with our experience, the car was delivered earlier than we expected, with no damage. We ended up paying a bit more than was expected $1200 to ship a car from San Diego to Oklahoma, But we had no surprise charges at the end when the driver dropped the car off.(which has happened to us before with a different company). The car shipping business I`ve come to learn is quite complicated (brokers, carriers, etc), and Sherpa was very communicative and helpful throughout the whole process. I`d use them again.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Oklahoma City, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Oklahoma. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
