- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Ohio customers say about Sherpa:
“Sherpa’s customer service was pretty much ideal. They answered all the questions I had. They kept every commitment they made. I would recommend them. It was a nervous type of transaction for me. I’ve never shipped a car before, and the internet has got plenty of nightmare-type examples. But if I had to do it again, I wouldn’t hesitate to go back to Ohio.”
“The driver was great! He called to give me the time he would arrive and was there as promised. He was so polite and helpful. I was fascinated watching him take the car off the ramp. I wish my grandchildren could have been there to see it. They would have loved it! The car arrived in perfect condition. I highly Recommend Sherpa to transport a vehicle to Ohio.”
“I unexpectedly purchased a Porsche Cayman in San Antonio, TX and needed to move it to Cleveland, Ohio. All within the time span of 5 days. After speaking with the Sherpa agent, I was impressed with his depth of knowledge, and the support that was promised throughout the entire process. I opted to select Sherpa, simply based on the person that spoke with, and their many positive on-line reviews.”

Factors that affect Ohio Car Shipping Prices
- Distance and Route: Ohio’s central location in the Midwest means shipping costs can vary widely depending on the origin or destination. Routes along major interstates like I-70, I-71, or I-75 are typically more affordable than those to remote areas.
- Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Ohio. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers protection from Ohio’s varied weather conditions, including snow in winter and occasional severe storms.
- Seasonal Factors: Ohio’s weather can impact car shipping prices. Winter snow and ice may increase costs due to slower travel times and potential route changes. Summer is peak season for auto transport, which can also drive up prices.
- Vehicle Size and Type: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in Ohio for handling winter conditions, may cost more to ship due to their size and weight. Conversely, compact cars are generally cheaper to transport.
- Pickup and Delivery Locations: Shipping to major Ohio cities like Columbus, Cleveland, or Cincinnati is typically less expensive than to rural areas. Consider meeting the carrier in a larger town if you’re located in a remote area to potentially reduce costs.
- Flexibility in Timing: If you can be flexible with your pickup and delivery dates, you may find better rates for car shipping to or from Ohio. Rush or guaranteed delivery services will increase the cost.
Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your Ohio car shipping needs. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Ohio car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates, especially for standard vehicles.
- Consider location: Discuss pickup and drop-off points with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major Ohio interstates like I-70, I-71, or I-75. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can help you secure better rates. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of less busy shipping times.
- Opt for off-peak seasons: If possible, schedule your Ohio auto transport during less busy months. Avoiding peak summer and holiday seasons can often result in more competitive pricing.
- Compare services: While it’s tempting to focus solely on price, remember that Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise ensures you get the quality service you need without hidden fees or unexpected costs.

Ohio Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to or from Ohio, it’s crucial to understand the state’s unique vehicle requirements and regulations. Ohio uses E-ZPass for electronic toll collection on turnpikes, so remember to remove your transponder before car transport to avoid unexpected charges. For those moving to Ohio, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 30 days. The process involves a physical inspection, proof of ownership, and payment of registration fees. Ohio also requires annual vehicle inspections, known as E-Check, in certain counties to ensure emissions compliance.
As you prepare for your move, consider these helpful tips:
- Set up utilities: Major providers include AEP Ohio for electricity and local municipal water services.
- Internet options: AT&T, Spectrum, and WOW! are popular choices in many Ohio cities.
- Register to vote: You can do this online or at your local BMV office.
- School enrollment: Contact your local school district for registration requirements.
- Library cards: Most Ohio libraries offer free cards to residents.
If you’re leaving Ohio, don’t forget to cancel local memberships and forward your mail. When choosing an auto transport company, consider Ohio’s weather conditions. The state experiences all four seasons, with harsh winters that can affect car shipping services. Ensure your chosen car shipping company is prepared for potential snow and ice.
Ohio’s extensive highway system, including I-71, I-75, and I-80, makes it a hub for car transport. Whether you’re shipping a car to Cleveland, Columbus, or Cincinnati, reliable auto transport options are available. Remember, Ohio car shipping may require additional preparation during winter months, so plan accordingly when scheduling your car shipping services.
Ohio Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Ohio?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Ohio. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Ohio?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Ohio?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Ohio?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Ohio
When planning car shipping to or from Ohio, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse seasonal weather patterns. Ohio experiences all four seasons distinctly, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.
In winter, Ohio often faces heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping.
- Remove any items from your vehicle that could freeze and potentially damage the interior.
Summer in Ohio can bring high temperatures and humidity. For car transport during warmer months:
- Consider placing a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior.
- Remove any heat-sensitive items that might melt or warp.
- Check your vehicle’s coolant levels before shipping.
Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial for efficient Ohio car shipping. Keep in mind:
- College towns like Columbus and Athens experience peak auto transport demand at the beginning and end of academic terms.
- The “snowbird season” in late fall and early spring can increase demand for car shipping services to and from warmer states.
- Major events like the Ohio State Fair in late July/early August might affect local transport logistics.
To ensure a smooth car shipping experience, consider booking your auto transport a few weeks before or after these peak periods. By planning around Ohio’s seasonal patterns and events, you can often secure better rates and more flexible scheduling options with your chosen car shipping company.
Car Shipping for College Students in Ohio
When considering car shipping to Ohio for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at universities. Most Ohio colleges require students to register their vehicles and purchase parking passes. For instance, Ohio State University offers various parking options, including surface lots and garages, but spaces are limited. Students should apply early to secure a spot. Similarly, University of Cincinnati provides parking permits on a first-come, first-served basis.
Many off-campus apartments near Ohio universities offer parking, but it’s essential to confirm this before signing a lease. For on-campus housing, parking availability varies by institution. Students planning to use car transport services should inquire about long-term parking options during breaks.
Ohio’s winter weather is another crucial factor. Students shipping a car to Ohio should consider investing in snow tires and keeping an emergency kit in their vehicle. It’s also wise to check if your current roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location.
Before using auto transport to bring your car to Ohio, research your specific university’s policies. Some schools, like Oberlin College, discourage first-year students from bringing cars to campus. By planning ahead and understanding these factors, you can ensure a smooth transition when using car shipping services for your Ohio college experience.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Ohio
Ohio is home to several military installations, making it a hub for service members and their families. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, located near Dayton, is the largest military base in Ohio. For those using car shipping services to this base, on-base parking is available, but it’s limited. Many personnel opt for off-base housing, where parking is generally more accessible. When shipping a car to Wright-Patterson, remember to update your vehicle registration within 30 days of arrival.
The Defense Supply Center Columbus is another significant installation. While smaller, it offers on-base parking for personnel. If you’re transporting a car here, be aware that the surrounding neighborhoods have ample street parking. For both bases, military members should utilize the on-site Vehicle Registration Office for any car-related paperwork.
Ohio’s military community can benefit from various resources, including commissaries at Wright-Patterson and several off-base options near Columbus. The USO of Central and Southern Ohio provides support services for military families, which can be especially helpful when relocating.
If you’re a service member looking for Ohio car shipping or auto transport services, Sherpa Auto Transport offers a $50 military discount. We thank you and your families for your service and are committed to making your car transport experience as smooth as possible.
Reviews from our Ohio Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Ohio customers:
“I want to tell everyone what an exceptional experience I had with Sherpa. My daughter passed away in May 2023 in Fresno CA and I needed to transport her 2014 Camaro from Fresno to southern Ohio. After much research and reading many reviews, I settled on Sherpa. It was absolutely the right decision. First, Sherpa guaranteed their price. Second, communication throughout the entire process was excellent. The transport driver, as well as Sherpa, kept in constant contact with me from pickup to drop off, advising me of the driver’s progress and ETA, and the car was delivered earlier than expected. Finally, the entire process was seamless, start to finish. A wonderful experience! If you need vehicle transport, don’t hesitate. Call Sherpa!”
“I requested a quote online, and it was sent to four companies. Sherpa called me immediately, then I talked to them over the telephone and they were very thorough and detailed about what was going to happen. The one thing they said I wanted to listen to was the price was not going to go up, and I was good with that. I talked to several other places that said the price could go up. Everything came out exactly as Sherpa said. I told them I wanted the transport covered, and they said they have that. I was there when we put the vehicle on the trailer and it was perfect. The gentleman who drove the trailer was fantastic. My subdivision would not support bringing a 35-foot trailer down the street, so we had to meet somewhere and the timing of the guy coming was exactly on the money. My mother-in-law and father-in-law were at the receiving end, and he came earlier than when I thought he was gonna be coming to Ohio. However, he came at night and everything worked out fine. The vehicle was released, and there was absolutely no damage. Everything was good. I would use Sherpa again in a heartbeat.”
“The Sherpa auto transport narrative is true! What they said they were going to do is exactly what they delivered. 1) The communication with Sherpa, TAT auto transport, and the driver was excellent. 2) The timing was as advertised. 3) The pick-up and delivery process were as communicated. 4) The TAT driver was pleasant to work with and took good care of our vehicle. 5) The equipment used to transport our vehicle was late model and in good condition. This transfer process was far cheaper than flying to California and driving back to Ohio.”
“Sherpa Auto Transport is the bomb!!!! The Office Staff that handled my Service Request to deliver my car from Ohio to Florida were outstanding. The Quality of work from all members of the Sherpa team from the Office Workers, to the Pick-Up Drivers and the Delivery Driver was spot on. My car was even delivered early with notification they were on the way. Great company and Great Value!!!! I even was given a refund for being a retired combat vet. It just goes to prove, when you want something done right always choose the best!!! You may pay a little more or not, but you have the peace of mind your car is in good hands and nothing to worry about. Thank you Sherpa!!! I will definitely use you again when needed. John S. (From Buckeye Land to Gator Country) Go Bucks!!!!”
“Everything about the process from start to finish was great. I can`t complain. My car arrived in a timely manner from Ohio to California. Even the driver who dispatched to pick up my car for delivery was great and friendly too. Sherpa had the best overall deal, and also most importantly the “lock in” rate so it can`t be changed. Definitely would recommend Sherpa.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Ohio, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Ohio. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
