Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Google
★★★★★

“Well let me tell you moving is not my favorite thing, I had to move from North Dakota to Florida! Clear across the nation and very stressful! But I have to say that in the middle of winter my car was picked up and delivered seamlessly. The communication was great, the driver was friendly and professional, my car made it without a scratch and clean.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I contacted Sherpa and they were super helpful and fast. The day before, I was informed that someone had picked my truck up. And then early that morning, I was contacted by the individual that had it, and told about when he would be in town. It was easy as far as him showing up to our house and unloading. That gentleman was friendly and excellent to work with.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Don’t mess around with signing up with any other brokers. All you will get is junk emails and spam texts. Sherpa had my vehicle picked up in 5 business days and delivered in 2 days. A+++ Broker! I’d definitely use them again! Thank you Sherpa and your Team!”

Factors that affect North Dakota Car Shipping Prices

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: North Dakota’s vast expanse and rural nature can significantly impact shipping costs. Longer distances, especially to remote areas away from major interstates like I-29 or I-94, typically result in higher prices for car transport services.
  • Seasonal Factors: North Dakota’s extreme weather conditions, particularly harsh winters, can affect car shipping prices. Ice and snow on roads may lead to longer transit times and increased costs during winter months.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your vehicle impact shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in North Dakota due to rural terrain, may cost more to transport than smaller cars.
  • Transport Method: Open carriers are the most cost-effective and widely used option for car shipping. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, offers additional protection and may be considered for high-value vehicles or during severe weather conditions.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Urban areas like Fargo or Bismarck are generally cheaper for car shipping than rural locations. Consider meeting the carrier in a more accessible location to potentially reduce costs.
  • Timing: Flexibility in your shipping schedule can lead to better rates. Peak seasons, such as summer months when many people are moving, may see higher prices for auto transport services.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. If your car isn’t running, inform your auto transport company as it may require special equipment, increasing the cost.

Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your North Dakota car shipping needs. For more detailed information on car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your North Dakota car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates on your auto transport.
  • Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major interstates like I-29 or I-94. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your overall car shipping price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your North Dakota car transport. Consider less busy shipping times, like mid-week or off-peak seasons, for potential savings.
  • Consider rural vs. urban locations: In North Dakota, shipping to/from major cities like Fargo or Bismarck may be more cost-effective than remote areas. Discuss options with your Sherpa advisor to find the best balance of convenience and affordability for your specific needs.

When relocating to or from North Dakota, understanding local vehicle requirements and regulations is crucial for a smooth transition. North Dakota doesn’t have toll roads, so there’s no need to worry about toll readers. However, the state does have specific vehicle inspection laws. All vehicles must pass a safety inspection before registration, which includes checks on brakes, lights, and other essential components.

The vehicle registration process in North Dakota is straightforward. New residents have 90 days to register their vehicles after establishing residency. You’ll need to provide proof of ownership, a valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance. North Dakota requires all vehicles to have liability insurance.

When it comes to parking, most cities in North Dakota don’t require residential parking permits. However, it’s always best to check with your local municipality for specific regulations.

For those moving to North Dakota, setting up utilities is an important step. Major electricity providers include Montana-Dakota Utilities and Xcel Energy. For water services, contact your local city or county office. Internet providers vary by location but often include Midco and CenturyLink.

Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in local schools. North Dakota’s Department of Public Instruction website provides information on school districts and enrollment procedures.

North Dakota Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from North Dakota?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from North Dakota. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from North Dakota?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from North Dakota?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to North Dakota?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in North Dakota

When planning car shipping to or from North Dakota, it’s crucial to consider the state’s unique seasonal climate. North Dakota experiences extreme weather conditions, particularly during winter months, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.

In winter, North Dakota often faces heavy snowfall and icy roads. If you’re scheduling car shipping services during this time:

  • Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t ship vehicles with these attached.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, avoiding steep inclines that could be dangerous in icy conditions.
  • Remove or properly insulate any items in your vehicle that could freeze and potentially damage your car or its contents.

Conversely, summers in North Dakota can be quite warm. When shipping a car during these months:

  • Consider using a sunshade to protect your car’s interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from your vehicle to prevent melting or damage.

Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial when planning North Dakota car shipping. Be aware of peak seasons that may affect availability and pricing:

  • August and May are busy months due to college students moving to and from universities.
  • The annual snowbird migration in late fall and early spring can increase demand for auto transport services.
  • Military base towns may experience increased activity during specific training periods.

To ensure a smooth car transport experience, consider scheduling your shipment a few weeks before or after these peak times. By planning ahead and working with a reputable car shipping company, you can navigate North Dakota’s unique seasonal challenges and ensure your vehicle arrives safely at its destination.

Car Shipping for College Students in North Dakota

When considering car shipping to North Dakota for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at universities. At North Dakota State University (NDSU), students need a parking permit, which can be purchased online. On-campus residents have designated lots, while commuters can choose from various options. University of North Dakota (UND) also requires parking permits, with different zones for residents and commuters. Both universities offer storage options during winter break, but it’s best to confirm availability in advance.

Weather is a significant factor in North Dakota. Students should equip their vehicles with winter tires for safe driving in snowy conditions. Before using car transport services to bring your vehicle, check if your roadside assistance coverage extends to North Dakota. This can be crucial during harsh winters.

For those living off-campus, many apartments near NDSU and UND offer parking spaces, but it’s not guaranteed. Always confirm parking availability before signing a lease. If you’re considering shipping a car to North Dakota for college, research your specific university’s policies and local regulations. Planning ahead ensures a smooth transition and helps avoid unexpected parking challenges during your academic journey.

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I was transporting a vehicle from a car dealership in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania to Beulah, North Dakota. I talked to a rep from Sherpa and he was instrumental in helping me understand that that load wasn’t going to be picked up if I didn’t sweeten the deal. I was glad that he was honest with me. The driver was also straightforward and no-nonsense. I understand truckers are busy and they want to get back on the road. But he was easy to deal with. I put the money in his hand as soon as I saw him and I had him count it in front of me. I had expectations that were unrealistic in terms of the cost given where I live and all in all, the price was a fair deal. Trucking is not easy and there was bad weather at the time. I knew he had to drive on some ice and I even asked him about it. After getting the payment, the driver drove the car off the trailer, parked it for me, and thanked me.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I did some business with Sherpa last year and they did very good. So, I asked them again. The last transport was from Virginia, Harrisonburg to Grand Forks, North Dakota and there was a delay but in general, the experience was good. The time frame was three days and the day before that, the rep told me that they still didn’t have a driver. So, I sent an email asking for some confirmation. At the end, they fixed it. Sherpa’s quote was fair and the final quote was just a little bit $100 more than the quote in advance. I met the driver when he picked up the car and he was the best part. He was very kind and when he arrived in Grand Forks, he was very good. The vehicle arrived on the day that we scheduled in advance and its condition was perfect.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa was rated the highest out of the transport companies online. Their customer service team was very friendly and easy to work with. For the most part, everything was good. Everything was very straightforward. The pick up and delivery were on time, prompt, and very professional. The driver kept in contact with me on where he was and how far out he was.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“They quoted a fair price and stuck to it. The drivers were in touch a day before and an hour before arriving. They were efficient in pick up and delivery. Paperwork was simple. Car arrived in good condition. Much better than the other company we used to transport our other vehicle last month.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I liked that Sherpa had a buffer. If the driver changed the price, they would cover up to so many hundreds of dollars. The coordinator was super easy to talk to. I made one phone call and the rest was through email so that was convenient. I liked that too. The communication with the driver had no delays and it was done through phone calls and text. We got the BOL through email. The transport was from Ohio to California and it was quicker than we thought it was gonna be. I’m happy with the experience and there were no complaints at all.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in North Dakota, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Dakota. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
