Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Wilson customers say about Sherpa:

Google
★★★★★

“Sherpa talked about the guaranteed price. And they stuck to that. They even went above and beyond and when they couldn’t get someone to take my car, they were willing to take zero commission and give all the commission to the driver. Sherpa really took care of me!!!! Thanks Sherpa!!!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I was satisfied with the price that was quoted, the way everything went and the way I communicated in particular, which was one of the things I read a lot about people having a hard time to communicate with the company. It all worked out very well for me, so I’m very happy. The broker that I talked with was very nice and answered all my questions. I knew what questions to ask at that point in time and the range that I was willing to accept. I wasn’t looking for getting the absolute cheapest. I was looking for somebody I could trust and that was reputable. I got a decent price on it, but I didn’t know if that was the absolute rock-bottom. But Sherpa`s price seemed fair, so I got that. I was happy with it and that person met that price easily, and there were no problems. I had a very good agent. Our delivery situation was a bit complicated because I’m operating out of North Carolina, but the car was in the suburbs of Atlanta, and it had to be delivered in New Mexico, and I wasn’t there at the delivery. And so, it was all done by phone and there was a bit of a hiccup at the beginning because I was told that the driver would come at a certain time. But we didn’t hear from him, and so I started calling around.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“My daughter moved from Oregon to North Carolina. We were overwhelmed by all the car transport services and heard several scams were out there. I was so impressed with Sherpa. I paid for the 5 day pick up and they were able to pick up her car next day. the driver contacted me and let me know that he had extra room on his truck and to load up my daughters car. (Initially, we just had 100 lbs of bins in the back).”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Wilson, NC significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances typically result in higher prices, but the per-mile rate often decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Wilson. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection for high-value or classic vehicles against Wilson’s occasional severe weather.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Seasonal Factors: Auto transport prices in Wilson can fluctuate based on the time of year. Summer months and January often see higher demand and prices due to increased relocation activity.
  • Route Popularity: Wilson’s proximity to major highways like I-95 and US-264 can affect pricing. More frequented routes often result in lower costs due to higher carrier availability.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Opting for a flexible pickup window (typically 5 business days) is usually more economical. Expedited or guaranteed pickup dates in Wilson will increase the cost of your auto transport.
  • Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship as they require special equipment for loading and unloading. Ensure your car is in running condition to avoid additional fees.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Wilson, NC. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Wilson car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping is typically the most cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Wilson, NC. It offers greater flexibility and lower rates compared to enclosed carriers.
  • Select convenient locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and drop-off points near major highways like I-95 or US-264. This can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your overall car shipping price.
  • Remove personal items: Empty your vehicle before transport. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about personal belongings during the car shipping process.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Wilson car transport. Carriers may offer lower prices for less in-demand time slots.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer or holidays. Shipping your car to or from Wilson during off-peak times may result in more competitive pricing.

Whether you’re moving to this charming Eastern North Carolina city or relocating elsewhere, understanding the steps involved in auto transport is crucial. Here’s a simplified guide to help you ship your car to or from Wilson:

1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a car shipping quote online. This will give you an idea of the cost based on factors like your vehicle type, distance, and preferred shipping method.

2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, nothing is due upfront with reputable car shipping companies.

3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash your car, remove personal items, and perform a basic maintenance check. This is particularly important in Wilson, where summer humidity can be high – ensure your AC is working for the journey.

4. Meet the Carrier: On pickup day, you’ll meet the carrier for a vehicle inspection and to hand over the keys. In Wilson, this often happens near major routes like I-95 or US-264 for easy access.

5. Track Your Shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Wilson’s central location in NC means your vehicle might pass through several states, depending on the destination.

6. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon arrival, inspect your car and complete the necessary paperwork. Be prepared for potential weather-related delays, especially during hurricane season (June to November) which can affect Wilson and surrounding areas.

Wilson, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Wilson?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Wilson. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Wilson?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Wilson?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Wilson?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. “Sherpa had a good rating on Better Business Bureau and it said that Sherpa was a bit more expensive than some of the other ones, but they had a guarantee to get your car moved in the appropriate time frame. I realized that in that industry, they give you a date but it would float a couple of days here or there. So, it`s not definitive because they are just an agent. They`re not actually moving the car. I was always moving out of state, so I wanted to make sure that I had that whole week. I would still be up in New York. So, I decided to call them and get a quote. I had some lowball quotes, but most of them were at 700, 800. The rep gave me a quote of 1,900 and I said to him, “Look, don`t you guys have some more guarantees than the other companies?” But $1,900, that`s more than double. He ended up inputting the wrong destination. He put it in California rather than North Carolina. So, he went back to check it, and then he said, “Oh, wait a minute. I screwed up. Hold on one second.” He then did it. They were a bit more expensive, but I wanted my car to get down there. I was moving to North Carolina and they`re based out of Charlotte. I called Sherpa the week before and they said, “Yeah, we don`t have anything yet. But typically, these things happen pretty quickly. We`ll let you know.” My first date was a Monday, 19th of July. Sherpa sent me an email on Sunday saying that, “We don`t have a driver yet, but we`re gonna keep you informed.” That was good to know that I was in the queue. I was surprised because Sherpa called me and said, “Okay, today`s the day, and guess what, we got a driver and the guy`s going to be there in a couple of hours.” He then told me the name of the company and said the guy would call me. He would be here in a couple of hours, which was accurate. So, I was prepared. I wish they gave me a bit more of a notice, but it was fine. I was home, and then the driver came. He called me when he got to my house and those folks were from North Carolina also. And the two folks from the company were very good. I gave one my daughter`s number, where he would drop the car off in North Carolina. I asked him when they would be there. Because with these auto transports, sometimes it would take three days. He said, “No, I`m going to be down there tomorrow. I`m probably not gonna get there till 5:00.” I said, “Okay, good. My daughter will be available any time after 3:00.” The driver was very courteous. I had a nice talk with him He got down there early and called my daughter. She said, “Look, I`m not going to be home until like 2:33.” He said, “Okay, no problem. I`ll hold off.” He came, dropped the car off, we had cash for him and everything worked out good. The car was in good shape, no dents. It looked exactly like it was in New York. They got my car up without incident and they were able to communicate to my destination. Everything worked out as planned and scheduled.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Wilson, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
