Factors that affect Wilmington Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Wilmington, NC. Longer distances typically result in higher prices, but the per-mile rate often decreases for longer trips.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Wilmington. Enclosed trailers, while offering extra protection from weather and road debris, are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
- Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship to Wilmington due to the space they occupy and their weight.
- Route Popularity: Shipping to or from Wilmington’s urban areas or along major routes like I-40 or I-95 is often cheaper than transport to more rural locations in North Carolina.
- Seasonal Factors: Wilmington’s mild climate means less seasonal variation in shipping costs. However, summer months and January can see higher prices due to increased demand for car transport services nationwide.
- Delivery Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates often result in lower costs for car shipping to Wilmington. Expedited or guaranteed delivery dates typically increase the price.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles that can be driven onto the transport truck are less expensive to ship to Wilmington than inoperable ones requiring special equipment for loading.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Wilmington, NC. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Wilmington car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major interstates like I-40 or I-95. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can help you secure better rates. Consider options in nearby areas like Jacksonville or Leland for potential savings.
- Opt for terminal-to-terminal: While Sherpa doesn’t offer this service, it’s worth noting that terminal-to-terminal shipping can sometimes be more cost-effective than door-to-door service.
- Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to Wilmington may be more affordable during off-peak seasons when demand is lower.

Wilmington Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When moving to or from Wilmington, NC, it’s crucial to understand the local vehicle requirements and regulations. North Carolina requires all vehicles to pass an annual safety inspection and emissions test (in some counties). New residents must register their vehicles within 60 days of establishing residency. The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) handles vehicle registration, and you’ll need proof of insurance, a valid driver’s license, and vehicle title to complete the process.
Wilmington doesn’t have a widespread toll system, but if you’re traveling on I-95 in other parts of the state, you might encounter NC Quick Pass. Consider removing your existing toll transponder to avoid unintended charges during car shipping.
When settling in Wilmington, you’ll need to set up utilities. Duke Energy provides electricity, while the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority manages water and sewer services. For internet, providers like Spectrum and AT&T offer services in the area. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in the New Hanover County Schools system.
Wilmington’s coastal location means preparing for hurricanes is essential. When using car shipping services or driving yourself, be aware of evacuation routes and have an emergency plan. The city’s climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters, so consider this when planning your move or auto transport.
Key highways for car transport to and from Wilmington include I-40 and US-17. If you’re shipping a car to Wilmington, coordinate with your car shipping company to determine the best delivery location, as some residential areas may have restrictions for large transport trucks.
Whether you’re moving to or from this charming coastal city, using a reliable Wilmington car shipping service can make your relocation smoother. Wilmington, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Wilmington?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. Reviews from our North Carolina Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied North Carolina customers:
“When Sherpa put the bid out, they said they would double or add to the bid if it wasn’t being picked up. So that seemed a little different than the other companies. Setting up the transport was relatively easy. Because I researched other products, I knew the questions to ask, things I couldn`t find online. So, all my questions were answered. The experience was positive. Because of the challenges of where I was located, on the day of the pickup, I met the driver. It was relatively close and in an open parking lot, where I felt safe. So, it wasn`t an issue. The driver did a walk around, pointing out any dings that were already there. And I was there with him as he did it. I also took a video of myself prior to him showing up, just to have that on record. The transport took six days from Washington state to North Carolina. The lowest Sherpa said was four days and the most was nine days. The driver contacted me closer to the day to get a better location for where the large truck would be able to go.”
“We were moving across the country and it worked out well with Sherpa. I sent their rep an email and I talked to him on the phone. Their reps were friendly and reliable. They picked up whenever I called and they responded to emails. A few days beforehand, they called me and said that they got a shipping company for me. They came a day before they said they were gonna come. Then they were able to drop it off three days before they said they would which was fine ‘cause we ended up getting to our destination a little bit earlier. The delivery was pretty easy. The guy who was driving the truck initially didn`t know my exact address. His pick-up was 45 minutes away. I asked him to pick something closer and he just asked me to find a couple of dealerships near me. I did and he picked one of the dealerships and then I only had to drive five minutes instead of 45. He was super nice about it.”
“I got quotes from many companies and while I found a couple of the largest ones to have good reviews on one site, they had very mixed reviews on Facebook or Yelp. This scared me away, which led me to Sherpa. Although it`s a new company, it had good reviews from multiple sources, and when I talked to an employee she was super knowledgeable and helpful. They were SUPER FAST at getting the car delivered, and this is without having to pay hundreds of dollars extra for a fast delivery. I thought the car was going to be ready a day later than it was, but when I found out it was ready earlier, I texted them at about 10 AM ET. They were able to get it picked up in NC that same afternoon, which was on a Thursday. I then got the car the following Wednesday in Southern California. They were also very professional, friendly, and communicative. Great experience!”
“Most transport companies are pretty much like Uber – they set up the drivers but don’t have much control over those drivers or what they do. I’ve shipped several vehicles with other companies and usually get a call that a driver needs an extra $100 from what was contracted. It’s usually right before pickup so you’re forced into it. I’ve had one vehicle dropped off at 3 am on a public road and received a text at 9 am – got to my car just before tow truck arrived. My expectations were low but Sherpa was awesome. Rep assured me they don’t keep drivers on their list that do what I experienced. Price is guaranteed not to change and there were no surprises there. They worked to meet my schedule needs and met them. Driver was thorough and communicated well. We won’t use anybody else moving forward.”
“You can trust Sherpa with your car, eyes closed. I was moving from Charlotte to Texas and I chose them because of their review on Yelp. Their reps were extremely attentive and easy to talk to. They were very courteous and professional. We had a little bit of a problem with my car in the beginning and Tim and another gentleman were very quick to react. They resolved the issue quickly and I was able to get my car out of Charlotte on time and into Texas with no messes after that. My car was picked up on Friday and delivered on Monday in great condition. It was the same as when I gave it to the driver. Everyone was also very communicative all throughout. I was contacted by the driver and the company themselves. The cost was fair and my experience with Sherpa was good throughout.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Wilmington, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
