Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.

  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Shelby, NC significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances typically result in higher prices, but the per-mile rate often decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Shelby. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers added protection from weather and road debris, which can be beneficial during Shelby’s occasional severe storms.
  • Location Accessibility: Shelby’s proximity to major routes like I-85 and US-74 can help keep costs down. However, if you’re shipping to or from more remote areas around Shelby, it may increase the price.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Seasonal Factors: Car shipping prices to and from Shelby may fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months often see higher demand and prices, while winter shipping could be affected by occasional ice or snow in the region.
  • Fuel Prices: Fluctuations in fuel costs can impact auto transport rates to and from Shelby, as carriers adjust their prices to maintain profitability.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. If your car doesn’t run, expect to pay more for specialized equipment needed to load and unload it.

Understanding these factors can help you plan your car shipment to or from Shelby more effectively. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re considering enclosed transport for added protection during Shelby’s occasional severe weather, learn more about open vs. enclosed car shipping.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Shelby car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-85, which runs just east of Shelby. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of dates for pickup and delivery. The more flexible you are, the better options you’ll have for cost-effective auto transport to or from Shelby, NC.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer. Shipping your car during off-peak times can result in lower rates.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Ensure your car is in good working condition. A well-maintained vehicle is easier to load and unload, potentially reducing handling costs.

Shelby, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Shelby?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Shelby. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Shelby?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Shelby?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Shelby?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“Setting up the transport with Sherpa was super easy. The only thing was going online. You just put in the information, you can set it up through that, but it made me call anyways, which is fine. It just made it sound like it was gonna be an easy online process. Honestly, calling was probably easier and better because the lady I talked to was great, super helpful, and gave me all the information I needed. The transport from Colorado to North Carolina took about four days. It was a lot faster than I thought it was gonna be. I got a call that they were gonna be able to drop the vehicle off in the third day. The guy had some issues with his truck. So, he just called me and asked if we could do it the next day. It was still a lot faster than I thought it would take. The communication was great. I got updates frequently from them. The driver spoke a little bit of English. So, there was a guy that was communicating for us and that was great because he gave me an update every so often. I heard from him at least twice a day on where they were at. So, I knew when I could expect him to be there. It was a really good experience. As far as the price goes, it was fair.”

“Thank you so much for the fabulous experience we recently had transporting our car with Sherpa. Just as states starting closing down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our daughter`s car died. She is an ICU nurse at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and would have taken the bus if the social distancing order was not in effect. We had an extra car for her to use in North Carolina but couldn`t get it to her because of the quarantine order in Maryland. When I explained our situation to Fern in your Charlotte office, she was extremely sympathetic and helpful. After three days without a driver taking our route, Sherpa waived its fee and offered its portion of the transport cost in order to give incentive to a driver to deliver our car. A driver was assigned that day, and our daughter received the car the following day. She was grateful beyond words, as were we. Thank you for working to protect our daughter as she is already on the frontline in healthcare. We have spread the word wherever we can about Sherpa`s willingness to look beyond the profit in order to help someone in need.”

Consumer Affairs

“When Sherpa put the bid out, they said they would double or add to the bid if it wasn’t being picked up. So that seemed a little different than the other companies. Setting up the transport was relatively easy. Because I researched other products, I knew the questions to ask, things I couldn`t find online. So, all my questions were answered. The experience was positive. Because of the challenges of where I was located, on the day of the pickup, I met the driver. It was relatively close and in an open parking lot, where I felt safe. So, it wasn`t an issue. The driver did a walk around, pointing out any dings that were already there. And I was there with him as he did it. I also took a video of myself prior to him showing up, just to have that on record. The transport took six days from Washington state to North Carolina. The lowest Sherpa said was four days and the most was nine days. The driver contacted me closer to the day to get a better location for where the large truck would be able to go.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa Auto Transport offered a good rate, which is why I went with them. They are one of the top-rated services and that was important to me because I have dealt with some sketchy moving companies in the past. I had a fantastic experience with the transport. I found it to be simple. Driver communication was fantastic. I had left the state prior to the pickup, so the driver was accommodating and was able to go and pick up the car on her own, which I appreciated. Pickup was not quite as smooth, but I`m not upset about it. There was a bit of a language barrier, so that was the only issue there, but that`s not a big deal to me. It was tough communicating with the driver. But once we started texting, it was easier. The car came in good time. The driver was accommodating. My car showed up in perfect condition. It was a reliable service and I would use Sherpa again if I had to move back to North Carolina.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“We were moving across the country and it worked out well with Sherpa. I sent their rep an email and I talked to him on the phone. Their reps were friendly and reliable. They picked up whenever I called and they responded to emails. A few days beforehand, they called me and said that they got a shipping company for me. They came a day before they said they were gonna come. Then they were able to drop it off three days before they said they would which was fine ‘cause we ended up getting to our destination a little bit earlier. The delivery was pretty easy. The guy who was driving the truck initially didn`t know my exact address. His pick-up was 45 minutes away. I asked him to pick something closer and he just asked me to find a couple of dealerships near me. I did and he picked one of the dealerships and then I only had to drive five minutes instead of 45. He was super nice about it.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Shelby, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
