Factors that affect Raleigh Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey affects car shipping costs to and from Raleigh, NC. Longer distances typically result in higher prices, but the per-mile rate often decreases for longer trips.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Raleigh. Enclosed trailers offer extra protection but cost about 50% more and may have longer delivery times.
- Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, generally cost more to ship to Raleigh due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
- Location Accessibility: Raleigh’s proximity to major highways like I-40 and I-440 can help reduce costs. Rural areas outside Raleigh may incur additional fees due to limited access.
- Seasonal Factors: Raleigh’s mild climate means fewer weather-related shipping challenges. However, summer months and January often see higher demand and prices for car transport services.
- Delivery Timeframe: Standard shipping with a flexible pickup window is usually the most economical option. Expedited services for faster car shipping to Raleigh will increase the cost.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles that can be driven onto the carrier are less expensive to ship. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the auto transport cost.
Understanding these factors can help you estimate your car shipping costs to or from Raleigh, NC. For a more detailed breakdown of pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Raleigh car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-40, I-440, or I-540. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues. Car shipping companies aren’t responsible for items left in the vehicle.
- Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates. The more flexible you are, the better options you’ll have for cost-effective auto transport to or from Raleigh, NC.
- Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer. Shipping your car during off-peak times can result in lower rates due to decreased demand.
- Leverage Sherpa’s expertise: Our experienced advisors can provide personalized tips to help you save on your Raleigh car shipping needs while ensuring a smooth, reliable transport experience.

- Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free quote from a reputable car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport. This will give you an idea of costs based on factors such as vehicle type, distance, and shipping method.
- Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, Raleigh’s humid subtropical climate can affect shipping schedules, so flexibility is key.
- Prepare Your Vehicle: Before shipping your car, give it a thorough wash and inspection. This is particularly important in Raleigh, where pollen can accumulate quickly in spring. Remove personal items and ensure your gas tank is no more than a quarter full.

Raleigh Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to or from Raleigh, NC, it’s crucial to be aware of local vehicle requirements and regulations. North Carolina requires all vehicles to pass an annual safety inspection and emissions test in most counties. Before registering your vehicle, ensure it meets these standards. The NC Division of Motor Vehicles handles vehicle registration, which can be done online or in person. You’ll need proof of insurance, a valid ID, and your vehicle title.
For toll roads, Raleigh uses the NC Quick Pass system. If you’re moving away, remember to remove your transponder to avoid unnecessary charges. When relocating to Raleigh, consider signing up for an NC Quick Pass to save time and money on tolls.
Raleigh’s climate can impact your car transport experience. Hot summers and occasional winter storms may affect shipping timelines. When choosing a car shipping company, inquire about their weather policies and protection measures.
For a smooth move, set up utilities early. Duke Energy provides electricity, while the City of Raleigh manages water services. Major internet providers include Spectrum and AT&T. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in the Wake County Public School System.
If you’re leaving Raleigh, remember to:
- Forward your mail through USPS
- Cancel local memberships (gyms, clubs, etc.)
- Return library books and cancel your card
- Notify your employer and update your address with banks and creditors
By considering these factors, you’ll ensure a smoother transition when shipping your car to or from Raleigh. Remember, a reputable auto transport service can provide valuable guidance throughout the process, making your move less stressful and more efficient.
Raleigh, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Raleigh?

In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Raleigh?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Raleigh?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Raleigh?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Raleigh
When scheduling car shipping to or from Raleigh, NC, it’s crucial to consider the seasonal weather and climate factors that can impact your auto transport experience. Raleigh experiences all four seasons, each with its unique challenges for car shipping services.
In winter, while Raleigh doesn’t typically see heavy snowfall, occasional ice storms can occur. When shipping a car during this season:
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping.
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t ship vehicles with these installed.
- Avoid leaving items that could freeze and expand in the vehicle.
During summer, Raleigh can experience high temperatures and humidity. For summer car transport:
- Consider using a sunshade to protect your vehicle’s interior.
- Remove any heat-sensitive items from the car before shipping.
- Be prepared for potential delays due to increased demand for auto transport services.
Spring and fall are generally mild in Raleigh, making them ideal seasons for car shipping. However, be aware of potential thunderstorms and occasional severe weather during these transitional seasons.
Beyond weather considerations, Raleigh car shipping can be impacted by local events and patterns:
- With several universities in the area, expect increased demand for car transport services at the beginning and end of academic semesters.
- The Research Triangle Park can cause fluctuations in car shipping needs due to corporate relocations.
- Tourist seasons, particularly in spring and fall, may affect availability and pricing of car shipping services.
By considering these factors when scheduling your auto transport to or from Raleigh, NC, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient car shipping experience. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on seasonal considerations.
Car Shipping for College Students in Raleigh, North Carolina
When considering car shipping to Raleigh for college, it’s crucial to understand parking policies at local universities. North Carolina State University requires students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. On-campus parking is limited, so plan ahead. Duke University also mandates parking permits, with different zones for residents and commuters. At University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, freshmen living on campus typically can’t bring cars. For those who can, permit costs vary by lot location. Most off-campus apartments offer parking, but always confirm before signing a lease. During winter breaks, universities often provide designated long-term parking areas. While Raleigh’s climate is generally mild, occasional snow can occur, so all-season tires are recommended. Before shipping your car to Raleigh, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. Planning ahead for these factors will ensure a smooth transition when using car transport services to bring your vehicle to college in Raleigh.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Raleigh, North Carolina
While Raleigh itself doesn’t host a major military installation, Fort Bragg, one of the largest military complexes in the world, is located just 70 miles southwest. For military members relocating to the area, it’s essential to know that Fort Bragg offers on-base parking, but space can be limited. Many choose to live off-base in nearby communities like Fayetteville, where parking is generally more accessible. When shipping your car to Raleigh or Fort Bragg, it’s crucial to coordinate with your auto transport company for smooth delivery. Remember to update your vehicle registration within 30 days of arrival in North Carolina. The area boasts excellent resources for military families, including the Fort Bragg Commissary and various support services. Reviews from our North Carolina Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied North Carolina customers:
“When I was looking there were so many companies hounding me which me made nervous. Sherpa was excellent from start to finish. They picked up the car in NC on a Wed Night and it was in Los Angeles, CA on Monday. There was no issue or haggling…The initial price was the price.”
“Louie who picked up my Jeep was great! He was on time, careful in loading, and on time for delivery! A great experience from the Booking to the Delivery! I would definitely use them again & I highly recommend them! It was as they say, Easy Peasy!”
“From the time I called Sherpa they were terrific. They told me about process, when and where the car was going to be picked-up. The gentleman that picked up my car was nicely dressed, very cordial and professional. I would always use Sherpa.”
“Thank you so much for the fabulous experience we recently had transporting our car with Sherpa. Just as states starting closing down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our daughter`s car died. She is an ICU nurse at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and would have taken the bus if the social distancing order was not in effect. We had an extra car for her to use in North Carolina but couldn`t get it to her because of the quarantine order in Maryland. When I explained our situation to Fern in your Charlotte office, she was extremely sympathetic and helpful. After three days without a driver taking our route, Sherpa waived its fee and offered its portion of the transport cost in order to give incentive to a driver to deliver our car. A driver was assigned that day, and our daughter received the car the following day. She was grateful beyond words, as were we. Thank you for working to protect our daughter as she is already on the frontline in healthcare. We have spread the word wherever we can about Sherpa`s willingness to look beyond the profit in order to help someone in need.”
“It was a pleasure to do business with SHERPA, my car was picked up in NJ within the promised time and arrived at the SC destination on time and in the same condition without any damage or scratches. The Driver David ** was very nice and polite. Customer service was flawless, Felicia was wonderful and so nice to deal with and so was everyone else. The price for the transport was fair and there were no hidden costs, I paid exactly what was quoted. This company strives for excellence from the moment of the initial contact thru the whole process until your car is safely delivered.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Raleigh, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
