Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Raleigh customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa Auto Transport offered a good rate, which is why I went with them. They are one of the top-rated services and that was important to me because I have dealt with some sketchy moving companies in the past. I had a fantastic experience with the transport. I found it to be simple. Driver communication was fantastic. I had left the state prior to the pickup, so the driver was accommodating and was able to go and pick up the car on her own, which I appreciated. Pickup was not quite as smooth, but I`m not upset about it. There was a bit of a language barrier, so that was the only issue there, but that`s not a big deal to me. It was tough communicating with the driver. But once we started texting, it was easier. The car came in good time. The driver was accommodating. My car showed up in perfect condition. It was a reliable service and I would use Sherpa again if I had to move back to North Carolina.”

Google
★★★★★

“Used Sherpa for transporting car from Raleigh NC to San Jose CA. It was a very satisfying experience from start to finish.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“When I was looking there were so many companies hounding me which me made nervous. Sherpa was excellent from start to finish. They picked up the car in NC on a Wed Night and it was in Los Angeles, CA on Monday. There was no issue or haggling…The initial price was the price.”

Factors that affect Raleigh Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location
Pickup Window
Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Raleigh, NC. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, as fuel costs and driver time increase.
  • Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Raleigh. Enclosed carriers offer extra protection but are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship to Raleigh than smaller cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Seasonal Factors: Raleigh’s mild climate means car shipping is possible year-round. However, prices may increase during summer months when demand is higher, especially for snowbirds returning north.
  • Route Accessibility: Raleigh’s proximity to major highways like I-40 and I-95 can help keep costs down. Rural areas outside the city may incur additional fees due to harder access.
  • Pickup and Delivery Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window (e.g., 5 business days) can lower your car shipping costs to Raleigh. Expedited services will increase the price.
  • Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship to Raleigh as they require special equipment for loading and unloading.

Understanding these factors can help you plan your car shipping to or from Raleigh more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re unsure whether to choose open or enclosed transport, learn more about the differences in our open vs. enclosed car shipping guide.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Raleigh car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major interstates like I-40, I-440, or I-540. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove all personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues.
  • Be flexible: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates. Consider locations slightly outside Raleigh, such as Durham or Cary, for potential savings.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer or holidays when demand for car shipping services in Raleigh is high.
  • Utilize Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise: Take advantage of our guaranteed pricing to avoid unexpected costs and ensure a smooth auto transport experience to or from Raleigh, NC.

Raleigh Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Internet Setup Car Moving
Utility Setup Car Moving
Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to or from Raleigh, NC, there are several local regulations and practical considerations to keep in mind. First, North Carolina requires vehicles to pass an annual safety inspection and emissions test in most counties. If you’re moving to Raleigh, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 60 days and obtain a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days if you become a resident.

For toll roads, Raleigh uses the NC Quick Pass system. If you’re moving away, remember to remove your transponder to avoid unnecessary charges. When settling in Raleigh, you might want to get an NC Quick Pass for convenient travel on toll roads like Triangle Expressway.

Parking in downtown Raleigh often requires permits or passes. Check with the Raleigh Parking office for residential parking permit options in your new neighborhood. This is especially important if you’re using car transport services to bring multiple vehicles.

When moving to Raleigh, set up utilities early. Duke Energy provides electricity, while the City of Raleigh handles water services. For internet, providers like AT&T, Spectrum, and Google Fiber offer services in the area. Don’t forget to register to vote and get your library card from Wake County Public Libraries.

If you’re leaving Raleigh, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify your current utility providers. When using auto transport services, consider Raleigh’s climate. Hot summers can affect your vehicle, so discuss climate-controlled options with your car shipping company.

Raleigh’s location near I-40, I-440, and I-540 makes it accessible for car shipping services. However, traffic can be heavy during rush hours, so plan your vehicle drop-off or pick-up accordingly when shipping a car to or from the area.

Raleigh, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Raleigh?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Raleigh. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Raleigh?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Raleigh?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Raleigh?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Raleigh

When planning car shipping to or from Raleigh, NC, it’s crucial to consider the seasonal factors that can impact your auto transport experience. Raleigh experiences all four seasons, each bringing unique challenges for car shipping services.

In winter, occasional snowfall and icy conditions can affect car transport schedules. While snow isn’t frequent, it’s wise to:

  • Avoid scheduling pickup or delivery on steep inclines

  • Potential delays due to spring thunderstorms

Summer brings hot, humid weather to Raleigh. When using car shipping services during this time:

  • Place a sunshade in your vehicle to protect the interior
  • Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt
  • Expect higher demand and potentially higher prices

For the best Raleigh car shipping experience, consider these tips:

For winter breaks, inquire about long-term parking options on campus or consider using Raleigh car shipping services to transport your vehicle home. Raleigh’s mild winters typically don’t require snow tires, but it’s wise to prepare for occasional ice. Before relocating, verify that your auto insurance and roadside assistance coverage extend to your new location. “Definitely 5 stars. We shipped a car from Chapel Hill NC to Seattle WA. The professional staff at Sherpa had excellent customer service, gave clear information, the car transfer happened exactly as described, and the process seemed flawless. I know a lot of hard work goes into each car transfer, so it’s clear that their staff, processes, and systems are working very well. I will be telling anyone who asks about car transport companies that Sherpa is definitely the company to contact when you need to ship a car anywhere in the country.”

“I was a bit nervous purchasing a car in California sight unseen and having it transported to North Carolina. I connected with Sherpa on-line to receive a quote and timing. I was pleasantly surprised to not only receive the quote in email but a phone call to review the quote and details. Long story short the team at Sherpa was always available to answer any questions I had along the way and very transparent throughout the entire process. The car was picked up and delivered within the window of time promised and our driver was courteous, professional and extremely kind. #bestserviceever :)”

“This was my first time shipping an auto also. I am a mature woman and I try to be very cautious in my business dealings so initially to say I was concerned would be understating my mindset. But my only other alternative was a trip from North Carolina to Delaware, where the car was located and back – not appealing regardless of the mode of transportation. I finally located my “dream” little sports car in New Castle Delaware. The car is 15 years old in “show room” condition…my concern was that it would not arrive in the same condition. I choose SHERPA Auto Transport after an online search and BBB A+ rating. The company sales personnel were very responsive and professional. I was kept informed via email throughout the process. After the driver was assigned – amazing driver – the vehicle was picked up in Delaware in the late afternoon, June 16th, and arrived at my door the next morning!!! Not a mark on it! I was over joyed!! The process was seamless. I would use this company again and I highly recommend this company!!!”

“I used Sherpa Auto Transport to transport a Jeep from Charlotte, NC to Austin, TX two weeks ago and was very pleased with their service. They were very easy to work with, kept in contact with me, followed up on any questions, picked up and delivered as scheduled, and were fairly priced. When the carrier Sherpa hired to transport my vehicle had not contact me as planned, I called Sherpa who immediately contacted the carrier, then followed up to see that the carrier had called me. At each stage of the process, Sherpa kept me up to date with emails as to the status of the transport. The driver for the carrier communicated with me on the days of pickup and delivery as to the specific time (within an hour) and location for pick-up and drop-off, as the truck was too large for some neighborhood streets. The driver also took good care loading, securing, and unloading my vehicle. I worked primarily with one contact at Sherpa for the entire process but when she wasn’t available her colleague addressed and followed up on my question quickly. I highly recommend that Sherpa Auto Transport be considered for any of your vehicle transport needs.”

“You can’t go wrong with Sherpa! I admit that I initially placed an order with a different company — two companies actually. Neither could find a driver to transport my brand new Genesis GV70 from NC to NV in an enclosed trailer. I even paid the first company in full, and six days later they hadn’t even tried to find a driver. So eight days after buying a car in NC, I called Sherpa. The Sherpa rep explained the process of basically bidding for a space on a truck, and put me on hold while she looked up the current rate. To put it simply, with a low ball rate, the car is going to sit there. A more competitive rate will get it picked up quicker. I asked her point blank how quickly she thought she could find a driver. She said there was a 96% chance of picking up the car within 4 days. Because I placed the order before noon EDST, she was able to get the order posted that same day. Mind you, this was two days before the July 4th weekend, during a pandemic. Just over 24 hours later I received a call from Mavistar who had accepted the order. And 24 hours after that I received a personal text from the Mavistar driver who confirmed he had picked up my car and would be updating me on his progress as he drove across the country. This driver was AWESOME. He texted or called me every night and updated me on his ETA. Six days after I placed my order, my car was sitting in my driveway in pristine condition. You get what you pay for. If you want budget-level customer service, go with a different company. Sherpa prides itself on doing business the right way, and that they did! I couldn’t be happier with them.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Raleigh, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel.
