Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa was able to find a shipper who could transport my car to meet the time in which I arrived in NC. I was able to meet my shipper within an hour of arrival, which was extremely convenient! My car showed up in the same condition from the day before, and my shipper was constantly updating me, which was pleasant and reaffirming!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Everything was really easy with Sherpa. It was like, “What address is it from, what address is it going to?” Then they said the price. The driver was fantastic too.”

Google
★★★★★

“Thank you so much for the fabulous experience we recently had transporting our car with Sherpa. Just as states starting closing down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our daughter’s car died. She is an ICU nurse at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and would have taken the bus if the social distancing order was not in effect. We had an extra car for her to use in North Carolina but couldn’t get it to her because of the quarantine order in Maryland.”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Huntersville, NC significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your car affect shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks typically cost more to transport than compact cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Transport Method: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Huntersville. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, offers additional protection and is ideal for high-value or classic cars.
  • Season: Auto transport prices in Huntersville can fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months and January often see higher demand and prices, while spring and fall may offer more competitive rates.
  • Route Popularity: Huntersville’s proximity to major highways like I-77 and I-485 can affect shipping costs. More frequented routes often result in lower prices due to higher carrier availability.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to more economical shipping options. Expedited services for urgent car transport needs will increase the cost.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. Inoperable cars require special equipment for loading, which increases the shipping cost.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Plan your Huntersville car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles, especially along I-77 or I-485.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways like I-77 or US-21. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates. This flexibility allows carriers to optimize their schedules, potentially leading to better rates for your Huntersville auto transport.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons in Huntersville, such as summer months or holidays. Off-peak shipping can often result in more competitive prices.

Huntersville, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Huntersville?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Huntersville. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Huntersville?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Huntersville?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Huntersville?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Consumer Affairs

“Upfront guaranteed delivery. Great communication. Guaranteed pickup in 4 day pickup window. Here is why you should go with Sherpa. My vehicle was picked up on a Tuesday in North Carolina and delivered at my driveway on Thursday to Colorado. 1700 miles in two days, no issues with the vehicle at all. (High Line Transport) was the driver. He kept great communication from pickup to dropoff. Sherpa made me feel comfortable explaining the process in detail, I why I should go with them instead of the other companies. I am glad I listened. Saved a lot of trouble vetting other companies.”

“Most transport companies are pretty much like Uber – they set up the drivers but don’t have much control over those drivers or what they do. I’ve shipped several vehicles with other companies and usually get a call that a driver needs an extra $100 from what was contracted. It’s usually right before pickup so you’re forced into it. I’ve had one vehicle dropped off at 3 am on a public road and received a text at 9 am – got to my car just before tow truck arrived. My expectations were low but Sherpa was awesome. Rep assured me they don’t keep drivers on their list that do what I experienced. Price is guaranteed not to change and there were no surprises there. They worked to meet my schedule needs and met them. Driver was thorough and communicated well. We won’t use anybody else moving forward.”

Consumer Affairs

“This is the 4th year using Sherpa and I could not be happier with them. They provide a 5-day pick-up date but I have yet to wait the whole 5 days. Last Sunday I called to get a quote, and by Tuesday, the car was picked up and by Thursday my son’s car shipped from NC to RI! They are quick to get shipments completed and their communication throughout the whole process is incredible. The drivers are also awesome, I was constantly getting updates from them. Don’t be fooled by other transportation companies, they will give you an estimate a lot lower but will result in a horrible experience. Do yourself a favor and don’t bother with the other companies, Sherpa is honestly the best for your transportation needs.”

Consumer Affairs

“I researched about 10 or so transporters for my vehicle. I needed a classic car shipped from NC to NY. Sherpa was one of the top transport companies I came across while doing my research. As anyone should be, I was skeptical as I had never done this type of blind transaction. After talking to a Rep, I decided to book with SHERPA. I will say that I am 1000000% satisfied. Everything was up front. No hidden gimmicks or fees. They picked up and delivered my vehicle in the time frame they said they would. My car was delivered with no issues WHATSOEVER. I may never need another Auto transport. If I ever did, I would definitely use SHERPA again. Hats off to you guys.”

“You can’t go wrong with Sherpa! I admit that I initially placed an order with a different company — two companies actually. Neither could find a driver to transport my brand new Genesis GV70 from NC to NV in an enclosed trailer. I even paid the first company in full, and six days later they hadn’t even tried to find a driver. So eight days after buying a car in NC, I called Sherpa. The Sherpa rep explained the process of basically bidding for a space on a truck, and put me on hold while she looked up the current rate. To put it simply, with a low ball rate, the car is going to sit there. A more competitive rate will get it picked up quicker. I asked her point blank how quickly she thought she could find a driver. She said there was a 96% chance of picking up the car within 4 days. Because I placed the order before noon EDST, she was able to get the order posted that same day. Mind you, this was two days before the July 4th weekend, during a pandemic. Just over 24 hours later I received a call from Mavistar who had accepted the order. And 24 hours after that I received a personal text from the Mavistar driver who confirmed he had picked up my car and would be updating me on his progress as he drove across the country. This driver was AWESOME. He texted or called me every night and updated me on his ETA. Six days after I placed my order, my car was sitting in my driveway in pristine condition. You get what you pay for. If you want budget-level customer service, go with a different company. Sherpa prides itself on doing business the right way, and that they did! I couldn’t be happier with them.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Huntersville, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
