Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Greensboro, NC. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and affordable option for auto transport to Greensboro. While enclosed trailers offer extra protection, they’re typically 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times. Most vehicles shipped to Greensboro don’t require enclosed transport.
  • Location Accessibility: Greensboro’s central location and access to major highways like I-40 and I-85 can help keep shipping costs down. Rural areas outside the city may incur additional fees due to harder access.
  • Seasonal Factors: Greensboro’s mild climate means car shipping is possible year-round. However, summer months and January typically see higher demand and prices. Spring and fall can offer more competitive rates.
  • Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship to Greensboro. Non-running cars also increase costs as they require special equipment for loading and unloading.
  • Flexibility: Being flexible with pickup and delivery dates can lead to better rates when shipping a car to or from Greensboro. Rush or guaranteed delivery options will increase the price.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when arranging car transport to or from Greensboro, NC. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your car shipment at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from Greensboro, NC.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff locations: Consult with Sherpa advisers to find convenient locations near major interstates like I-40 or I-85. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering flexibility in pickup and delivery dates can lead to better pricing options. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective shipping times.
  • Utilize Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise: While it’s tempting to shop around, remember that Sherpa’s quotes are realistic and guaranteed. Our Price Lock Promise ensures you won’t pay more than the quoted price, even if carrier costs increase.

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping your car to or from Greensboro, NC, it’s essential to be aware of local regulations and prepare for your move. North Carolina requires all vehicles to pass an annual safety inspection, so ensure your car is up-to-date before transport. If you’re moving to Greensboro, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 60 days. The process involves providing proof of insurance, a valid driver’s license, and paying registration fees.

Greensboro doesn’t have a specific toll system, but if you’re traveling through nearby areas, consider removing your E-ZPass or NC Quick Pass to avoid unnecessary charges during transport. For parking, residents can obtain permits for certain areas through the city’s website.

When settling in Greensboro, set up utilities early. Duke Energy provides electricity, while City of Greensboro Water Resources handles water services. For internet, popular providers include Spectrum and AT&T. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in Guilford County Schools.

Greensboro, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Greensboro?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Greensboro. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Greensboro?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Greensboro?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Greensboro?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Remember, shipping a car to college can provide convenience, but also comes with responsibilities – plan accordingly!

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“This was my first time arranging for transport of a vehicle I had just purchased remotely. I didn’t know the industry and as I investigated providers and learned how the industry works, I was extremely leery. Essentially, the companies are “brokers” so you really have no idea who will be transporting the vehicle until it’s “booked”. That additional layer in an industry like this would generally spell trouble with regards to communication and execution. I called numerous companies and was very put off by the typical broker I experienced; a lot of “oh yeah, don’t worry about a thing” but little on details, little documentation, and very loose in terms of process. After talking to numerous providers, I’d resigned myself to fact the entire process would leave me riddled with anxiety regarding what it would cost, when and if my vehicle would arrive, and responsiveness in communication from the parties involved. Then I called Sherpa, and spoke with Emmy… and what a breath of fresh air. Articulate, clear communication, well defined process, automated communications and just the warm fuzzy feeling you get when a company clearly sets an expectation and then meets it at every step of the way. I’ve been in IT for 20+ years including a decade running call centers and the last 6-7 years focused on process automation… I know well designed and efficient processes when I see them (and they are rare). From Sherpa’s website/quote request system, to the numerous and timely email updates (including content, branding and formatting), these folks have a ridiculously well oiled machine. So much so it made me simply trust that they had applied equal attention to vetting the actual transport partners they book with. All of the anxiety I had felt regarding the transportation process simply melted away. And, as noted, they set an expectation, and met it in execution. The transporter they booked me with also provided good communication and updates throughout the process and met our agreed to expectations for delivery. No issues. The dealer I worked with on the purchase has actually been a nightmare (and side-note, recommended a transport company that was completely unimpressive), so it was great to have the transportation piece move so flawlessly. Thank you Sherpa, I simply couldn’t be happier. Side note – Emmy should be training folks, as she really set the standard for a great customer experience on my first call with her.”

“The reps of Sherpa were extremely nice, knowledgeable and told me when they would pick up. Then the other company then contacted me and said when they were picking up and they did when they said they were. It went really smoothly and without a hitch. It was perfect. They had told us it might be longer, but then it got there three days early. So, it was great.”

Consumer Affairs

“I was looking to move a car across the state and Sherpa was a direct recommendation. With the open communication, it was a good experience with their rep. The quote was exactly the same until the end, and the pickup and delivery went smoothly.”

Yelp

“My daughter moved from Oregon to North Carolina. We were overwhelmed by all the car transport services and heard several scams were out there. I was so impressed with Sherpa. I paid for the 5 day pick up and they were able to pick up her car next day. the driver contacted me and let me know that he had extra room on his truck and to load up my daughters car. (Initially, we just had 100 lbs of bins in the back). That solved the burden of shipping all of her belongings. (**not all drivers can or are able to let you fill the cars-mine had extra weight available) 7 days later her car arrived in perfect condition. We will be getting a $100 refund for providing Sherpa with the bill of lading and $20 towards a car wash! we paid $1405 and Sherpa has a $300 promise to pay if drivers run into any additional costs. we felt safe, confident, and appreciative of the service we received. highly highly recommend!”

Google
★★★★★

“I had a positive experience with Sherpa. If you are using a transport company please go into it knowing that it is a very aggressive industry. To get a quote you are required to provide your phone number and the various brokers, including Sherpa, will call and/or repeatedly until you tell them you’ve gone with someone else. Please also understand that these are brokers and not truckers. They are not the ones who will physically be transporting your vehicle. All brokers require some sort of deposit up front which you can use a credit card for but the balance due is required in cash or money order or sometimes Zelle due to the trucking company upon delivery. That’s standard. If you pay all by cc you will pay more and all upfront. Sherpa called me on a Sunday. I told the rep I went with someone else. His response was, “Ok. If anything falls through or you need us in the future, please reach out.” He seemed sincere. Well my first broker DID fall through, and based solely on the Sherpa rep’s response I called them back to use them. They weren’t the least expensive but sometimes you get what you pay for. I paid the deposit on a Monday afternoon and my trucker picked up on Wednesday and the car delivered from NC to FL on Thursday. I worked with Ivy and she was very knowledgeable and not pushy. She answered all my questions and explained the complete process without coming across as a sales person. The transport was smooth and without issue. One recommendation for Sherpa is to send a “thank you” and “how did we do” follow up email after the transport is complete. One broker sent auto-generated emails with general information about the transport business and things to look out for. Sherpa should do that too. It’s good info to have. I would use Sherpa again if I needed transport.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Greensboro, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
