Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Graham customers say about Sherpa:

Google
★★★★★

“I was very anxious to ship our car from all the reviews regarding price changes, pick up and delivery date delays, etc…. I have to say Sherpa was seamless and flexible. The price was the price. After we received the exact pick up date, we asked about the ability to adjust the location slightly. It is the carrier’s decision but Sherpa and the carrier were accommodating. The car arrived quickly; it was a CA to North Carolina transport Picked up on Tuesday; delivered on Sunday. Car was in great shape. Thank you, Sherpa”

Consumer Affairs

“I was satisfied with the price that was quoted, the way everything went and the way I communicated in particular, which was one of the things I read a lot about people having a hard time to communicate with the company. It all worked out very well for me, so I’m very happy. The broker that I talked with was very nice and answered all my questions. I knew what questions to ask at that point in time and the range that I was willing to accept. I wasn’t looking for getting the absolute cheapest. I was looking for somebody I could trust and that was reputable. I got a decent price on it, but I didn’t know if that was the absolute rock-bottom. But Sherpa`s price seemed fair, so I got that. I was happy with it and that person met that price easily, and there were no problems. I had a very good agent. Our delivery situation was a bit complicated because I’m operating out of North Carolina, but the car was in the suburbs of Atlanta, and it had to be delivered in New Mexico, and I wasn’t there at the delivery. And so, it was all done by phone and there was a bit of a hiccup at the beginning because I was told that the driver would come at a certain time. But we didn’t hear from him, and so I started calling around. And then I finally understood that he was not in Atlanta when I had thought he might be in Atlanta at that time. So, he still had to fill up his truck. When I understood that, I talked to his people at that office, the dispatcher, and they explained that to me. We were very patient. He was supposed to come on a Saturday and he came first thing Monday morning. But we were the last to be loaded on the truck because I was told that it would take four days, and it did. We were the last in and the first out, the way their schedule worked out.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I had some lowball quotes, but most of them were at 700, 800. The rep gave me a quote of 1,900 and I said to him, “Look, don`t you guys have some more guarantees than the other companies?” But $1,900, that`s more than double. He ended up inputting the wrong destination. He put it in California rather than North Carolina. So, he went back to check it, and then he said, “Oh, wait a minute. I screwed up. Hold on one second.” He then did it. They were a bit more expensive, but I wanted my car to get down there. I was moving to North Carolina and they`re based out of Charlotte. I called Sherpa the week before and they said, “Yeah, we don`t have anything yet. But typically, these things happen pretty quickly. We`ll let you know.” My first date was a Monday, 19th of July. Sherpa sent me an email on Sunday saying that, “We don`t have a driver yet, but we`re gonna keep you informed.” That was good to know that I was in the queue.”

Factors that affect Graham Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Graham, NC significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for shipping to or from Graham. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers added protection from weather and road debris, which can be beneficial during North Carolina’s occasional severe storms.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship than compact cars due to the space they occupy and their weight.
  • Route Accessibility: Graham’s proximity to major highways like I-40 and I-85 can help reduce costs. However, if pickup or delivery is in a more remote area of Alamance County, it may increase the price.
  • Seasonal Factors: Auto transport demand in Graham can fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months and January often see higher prices due to increased demand, while spring and fall may offer more competitive rates.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship as they can be driven onto the carrier. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the cost.
  • Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive pricing for your Graham car shipping needs.

Understanding these factors can help you plan your car transport to or from Graham more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Graham, NC car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundled pickups in the area.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major highways like I-40 or I-85, which run close to Graham. This can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your overall auto transport price.
  • Lighten your load: Remove personal items from your vehicle before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during transport.
  • Stay flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better pricing options. Consider a wider range of dates to potentially secure a more competitive rate for your car shipping needs in Graham, NC.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer. Scheduling your auto transport during off-peak times may result in more favorable rates for shipping to or from Graham.

However, if you’re moving to a nearby city with tolls, consider removing your transponder before auto transport.

Vehicle registration in North Carolina is straightforward. Graham, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Graham?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Graham. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Graham?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Graham?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Graham?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Graham

When planning car shipping to or from Graham, NC, it’s crucial to consider the area’s seasonal weather patterns. Graham experiences all four seasons, each with unique challenges for auto transport.

Spring and Fall: These are ideal times for car shipping services in Graham. Mild temperatures and less extreme weather make for smooth transport. However, be aware of occasional thunderstorms that could cause slight delays.

Summer: While generally favorable for shipping a car, Graham’s summers can be hot and humid. If you’re storing items in your vehicle during transport, avoid leaving heat-sensitive items that could melt or warp. Consider using a sunshade to protect your car’s interior.

Winter: Graham experiences mild winters, but occasional snow and ice can occur. When scheduling car transport during winter months:

  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping.
  • Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t ship vehicles with these attached.
  • Avoid leaving liquids that could freeze and potentially damage containers.

Beyond weather, consider local events that might affect Graham car shipping. The start and end of semesters at nearby universities can increase demand for auto transport. Planning your shipment a few weeks before or after these peak times could result in better rates and availability.

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you’ll ensure a smoother experience when using a car shipping company for your Graham, NC auto transport needs. Always communicate with your chosen car transport provider about any specific concerns or requirements you may have based on the time of year.

“It was a pleasure to do business with SHERPA, my car was picked up in NJ within the promised time and arrived at the SC destination on time and in the same condition without any damage or scratches. The Driver David ** was very nice and polite. Customer service was flawless, Felicia was wonderful and so nice to deal with and so was everyone else. The price for the transport was fair and there were no hidden costs, I paid exactly what was quoted. This company strives for excellence from the moment of the initial contact thru the whole process until your car is safely delivered.”

“Definitely 5 stars. We shipped a car from Chapel Hill NC to Seattle WA. The professional staff at Sherpa had excellent customer service, gave clear information, the car transfer happened exactly as described, and the process seemed flawless. I know a lot of hard work goes into each car transfer, so it`s clear that their staff, processes, and systems are working very well. I will be telling anyone who asks about car transport companies that Sherpa is definitely the company to contact when you need to ship a car anywhere in the country.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Most transport companies are pretty much like Uber – they set up the drivers but don’t have much control over those drivers or what they do. I’ve shipped several vehicles with other companies and usually get a call that a driver needs an extra $100 from what was contracted. It’s usually right before pickup so you’re forced into it. I’ve had one vehicle dropped off at 3 am on a public road and received a text at 9 am – got to my car just before tow truck arrived. My expectations were low but Sherpa was awesome. Rep assured me they don’t keep drivers on their list that do what I experienced. Price is guaranteed not to change and there were no surprises there. They worked to meet my schedule needs and met them. Driver was thorough and communicated well. We won’t use anybody else moving forward.”

Google
★★★★★

“For my 1st time shipping my car I had a great and easy experience. I moved from CA to NC and scheduled my shipment maybe 3 weeks to 1 month in advance. The company provided me with my actual drivers contact information, and he was very attentive to my needs and communicated projected pick up dates. He allowed me to fill the car, trunk and inside as long as nothing was visible over window lines. The day of drop off, the only negative was the time kept changing and it was tough having to be in a specific area to wait for him. The drop off was about 3 hours after expected, but my driver agreed to change locations to meet me where ever I’d be. The car was in original condition,, no issues. Would use again, if needed to. Company also offered a free car was and give a small rebate for booking online.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“This is the 4th year using Sherpa and I could not be happier with them. They provide a 5-day pick-up date but I have yet to wait the whole 5 days. Last Sunday I called to get a quote, and by Tuesday, the car was picked up and by Thursday my son`s car shipped from NC to RI! They are quick to get shipments completed and their communication throughout the whole process is incredible. The drivers are also awesome, I was constantly getting updates from them. Don`t be fooled by other transportation companies, they will give you an estimate a lot lower but will result in a horrible experience. Do yourself a favor and don`t bother with the other companies, Sherpa is honestly the best for your transportation needs.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Graham, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
