Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Factors that affect Charlotte Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to and from Charlotte, NC. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the cost per mile typically decreases for longer trips.
  • Route Popularity: Charlotte’s strategic location along I-85 and I-77 makes it a popular hub for auto transport. Busier routes often result in more competitive pricing for car shipping services.
  • Seasonal Factors: Charlotte’s mild climate means car shipping is viable year-round. However, summer months and January tend to see higher demand and potentially increased prices for auto transport.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for shipping a car to or from Charlotte. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, offers additional protection for high-value or classic vehicles.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Terminal-to-terminal shipping is often cheaper than door-to-door service. Charlotte’s urban area generally offers more competitive pricing compared to rural locations in North Carolina.
  • Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to more economical car shipping options. Rush or guaranteed delivery services typically come at a premium.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. Non-running cars require special equipment, increasing the cost of auto transport services.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Charlotte car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major interstates like I-85 or I-77. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and lower your overall auto transport price.
  • Remove personal items: Empty your vehicle before shipping. Car shipping companies aren’t responsible for personal belongings, and the extra weight can increase costs.
  • Be flexible with dates: The more flexible you are with pickup and delivery dates, the better options you’ll have for car shipping to or from Charlotte. This flexibility can lead to substantial savings on your auto transport.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer or holidays when shipping a car to or from Charlotte. Off-peak times often offer more competitive rates for car transport services.

When shipping a car to Charlotte, NC, it’s essential to understand local regulations and prepare for your move. North Carolina requires vehicle inspections annually, so ensure your car is up-to-date before arrival. The state uses NC Quick Pass for toll roads, but you can remove it during auto transport to avoid charges. Upon arrival, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 60 days. Visit the North Carolina DMV website for details on the registration process.

Charlotte’s climate can be humid with hot summers and mild winters. When car shipping to Charlotte, consider the weather impact on your vehicle. For example, you might want to invest in a good car cover to protect against sun damage and occasional hailstorms.

As you settle in, set up utilities through Duke Energy for electricity and Charlotte Water for water services. For internet, providers like AT&T, Spectrum, and Google Fiber offer services in the area. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and explore Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools if you have children.

Charlotte, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Charlotte?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Charlotte. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Charlotte?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Charlotte?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Charlotte?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Charlotte

When planning car shipping to or from Charlotte, NC, it’s crucial to consider the city’s seasonal weather patterns. Charlotte experiences four distinct seasons, each with unique factors that can affect auto transport.

In winter, while Charlotte doesn’t typically see heavy snowfall, occasional ice storms can occur. If you’re scheduling car shipping services during this time:

  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping.
  • Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t ship vehicles with these.
  • Avoid leaving items that might freeze in the car.

Summer in Charlotte can be hot and humid. When you ship a car during these months:

  • Place a sunshade in the windshield to protect the interior.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle.

Beyond weather, consider these factors when scheduling Charlotte car shipping:

  • College move-in/out periods: With several universities in the area, August and May can be busy for auto transport. Book early or consider shipping a few weeks before or after these peak times.
  • NASCAR events: Major races at Charlotte Motor Speedway can increase demand for car transport services. Plan ahead if shipping during these times.
  • Business relocations: Charlotte’s growing business sector means increased corporate moves in spring and fall. This can affect availability of car shipping companies.

By considering these seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother experience when shipping a car to or from Charlotte, NC. Always consult with your chosen auto transport provider for the most up-to-date advice on local conditions and optimal shipping times.

Many off-campus apartments near Charlotte universities provide parking, but it’s wise to confirm before signing a lease. For auto transport planning, remember that Charlotte rarely requires snow tires, but occasional ice storms occur. Before shipping your car to Charlotte, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. If you’re using a car shipping company, ask about their drop-off locations near campus to streamline your move-in process. By considering these factors, you’ll ensure a smooth transition for both you and your vehicle when starting your college journey in Charlotte.

“Upfront guaranteed delivery. Great communication. Guaranteed pickup in 4 day pickup window. Here is why you should go with Sherpa. My vehicle was picked up on a Tuesday in North Carolina and delivered at my driveway on Thursday to Colorado. 1700 miles in two days, no issues with the vehicle at all. (High Line Transport) was the driver. He kept great communication from pickup to dropoff. Sherpa made me feel comfortable explaining the process in detail, I why I should go with them instead of the other companies. I am glad I listened. Saved a lot of trouble vetting other companies.”

“I rarely leave reviews for things, but I wanted to for Sherpa because it was my first time shipping a vehicle and I chose Sherpa as my broker, and everything went great! They chose West Coast Auto Transport as my carrier (which they assigned very quickly) for shipping my car from WA State to Maryland, and their drivers were so kind and professional. They picked up my car on the first day of the pickup window, and despite a delay in delivery, the carrier gave me an update and the driver for delivery was very communicative about arrival and it truly was door-to-door service! He parked his truck down the road and personally drove my vehicle right to my apartment building door – so awesome! I will absolutely use Sherpa again for any future car shipping needs.”

“You can`t go wrong with Sherpa! I admit that I initially placed an order with a different company — two companies actually. Neither could find a driver to transport my brand new Genesis GV70 from NC to NV in an enclosed trailer. I even paid the first company in full, and six days later they hadn`t even tried to find a driver. So eight days after buying a car in NC, I called Sherpa. The Sherpa rep explained the process of basically bidding for a space on a truck, and put me on hold while she looked up the current rate. To put it simply, with a low ball rate, the car is going to sit there. A more competitive rate will get it picked up quicker. I asked her point blank how quickly she thought she could find a driver. She said there was a 96% chance of picking up the car within 4 days. Because I placed the order before noon EDST, she was able to get the order posted that same day. Mind you, this was two days before the July 4th weekend, during a pandemic. Just over 24 hours later I received a call from Mavistar who had accepted the order. And 24 hours after that I received a personal text from the Mavistar driver who confirmed he had picked up my car and would be updating me on his progress as he drove across the country. This driver was AWESOME. He texted or called me every night and updated me on his ETA. Six days after I placed my order, my car was sitting in my driveway in pristine condition. You get what you pay for. If you want budget-level customer service, go with a different company. Sherpa prides itself on doing business the right way, and that they did! I couldn`t be happier with them.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I cancelled with the first company that I went with and then I saw the Sherpa advertisement online. It looked very decent to me and I contacted them. They said they could do the move for $2,300. They also guaranteed that it would be an enclosed transport and that my car would be delivered within six days. So I signed up with them. They picked up my car on a Wednesday and it was delivered on Saturday morning, so it was within three days. The drivers told me they drove day and night. They took turns driving. The drivers and Sherpa called me. They kept me informed at all times where my car was so I could expect delivery and communicate with the person that was receiving it in Portland. It was excellent communication. They really took good care of my car. The price was decent given the fact that they only transported two cars in one trip. It was a 2,600-mile trip so there was not much money to be made with two cars transporting. Everything was a straight deal. There was no damage on my car when it was delivered and nothing was missing inside. It was a pleasant experience. I would recommend Sherpa to anybody who needs a car transport.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I broke down at a resort about 300 miles from home and I had no way to do anything and didn`t know anybody. I got online and looked for people. I called about 10 different brokers. They just pestered me and told me they get cheaper. That doesn`t happen in that business. You can`t guarantee that unless you own the truck yourself. Sherpa`s customer service, on the other hand, was totally transparent about everything, how the transport brokerage works, and that you can get it cheaper. But if you do it cheaper, the truckers aren`t going to want to do it. With Sherpa, I paid more than other people were asking but I got the type of service you should get for that price. They offered me a price and said the pickup window was seven days. I was home at the time and I needed my car. I asked if there was a way to do this faster and they said, “With $25, we can pick it up tomorrow.” The driver was fantastic. He texted and called all the time every step of the way. The experience with Sherpa was fantastic.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Charlotte, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
