Factors that affect Charlotte Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Charlotte’s central location in the Southeast affects shipping costs. Transporting a car to or from nearby cities like Atlanta or Richmond is generally cheaper than shipping to or from more distant locations like Los Angeles or New York.
- Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Charlotte. Enclosed transport, while offering extra protection, is typically 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
- Pickup and Delivery Locations: Charlotte’s urban setting makes it more affordable for car shipping compared to rural areas in North Carolina. Proximity to major highways like I-85 and I-77 can also reduce costs.
- Seasonal Factors: Charlotte’s mild climate means car shipping is generally consistent year-round. However, summer months and January may see higher prices due to increased demand.
- Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger vehicles or those with low ground clearance may cost more to ship. Inoperable vehicles also increase the price due to special handling requirements.
- Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive rates for car transport to or from Charlotte.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Charlotte. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Charlotte car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates.
- Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major interstates like I-85 or I-77. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Lighten your load: Remove personal items from your vehicle before transport. This reduces weight and potential liability issues.
- Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better pricing options for your auto transport needs.
- Consider seasonal timing: Charlotte’s mild climate means car shipping is viable year-round, but rates may be lower during off-peak seasons.
- Opt for terminal-to-terminal: While Sherpa doesn’t offer this service, it’s worth noting that door-to-door delivery is often more convenient for Charlotte residents.

First, North Carolina requires vehicle inspections annually. If you’re moving to Charlotte, you’ll need to have your car inspected within 90 days of registering it. For car shipping services, ensure your vehicle is clean and in good condition for a smooth inspection process upon arrival.
Charlotte uses the NC Quick Pass for toll roads. If you’re moving away, remember to remove your transponder to avoid unexpected charges. When settling in Charlotte, sign up for an NC Quick Pass to easily navigate toll roads like I-77 Express Lanes.

Charlotte, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Charlotte?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Charlotte. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Charlotte?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Charlotte?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Charlotte?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Charlotte
When planning car shipping to or from Charlotte, NC, it’s crucial to consider the city’s seasonal weather patterns. Charlotte experiences all four seasons, each with unique factors that can affect auto transport.
Spring and Fall: These are ideal seasons for car shipping services in Charlotte. The mild temperatures and lower precipitation make for smooth transport operations. However, be aware that spring can bring occasional thunderstorms, so flexibility in pickup and delivery dates is advisable.
Summer: Charlotte’s summers are hot and humid. When you ship a car during this season, consider these tips:
- Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior.
- Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle.
- Check tire pressure, as heat can cause over-inflation.
Winter: While Charlotte doesn’t typically see heavy snowfall, ice can be a concern. For winter car transport:
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent sliding.
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport.
- Don’t leave items that might freeze in the car.
Beyond weather, consider these factors when scheduling Charlotte car shipping:
- College Move-In/Out: With several universities in the area, August and May can be busy for car shipping companies. Book early or consider shipping a few weeks before or after these peak times.
- NASCAR Events: Major races at Charlotte Motor Speedway can increase demand for auto transport. Plan ahead if shipping a car during these periods.
- Holiday Season: The weeks around Thanksgiving and Christmas often see increased traffic and potential weather challenges.
By considering these seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient car shipping experience to or from Charlotte, NC. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice tailored to your specific needs.
Car Shipping for College Students in Charlotte, North Carolina
When considering car shipping to Charlotte for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at local universities. UNC Charlotte requires students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits, with options for on-campus residents and commuters. Most off-campus apartments offer parking, but always confirm beforehand. Queens University provides limited on-campus parking with a permit system. Johnson & Wales University has no on-campus parking, so students often use nearby public garages. For winter breaks, UNC Charlotte offers long-term parking options, while other schools may require alternative arrangements. Charlotte’s mild winters typically don’t necessitate snow tires, but it’s wise to check your auto transport insurance and roadside assistance coverage for your new location. Remember, shipping a car to Charlotte can be a convenient option if parking is limited or expensive. Always research specific car shipping services and campus policies to make an informed decision about bringing your vehicle to college.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Charlotte, North Carolina
While Charlotte doesn’t have any active military bases within city limits, Fort Bragg, one of the largest military installations in the world, is located about 130 miles east. For military members relocating to Charlotte or Fort Bragg, it’s essential to know that on-base parking is available, but can be limited. Many choose to live off-base in nearby communities, which generally have ample street parking. When shipping a car to Charlotte or Fort Bragg, it’s crucial to coordinate with your unit for specific regulations. Remember to update your vehicle registration within 30 days of arrival. The area offers several resources for military families, including commissaries and exchange stores at Fort Bragg. If you’re using car shipping services for your move, Sherpa Auto Transport offers a $50 military discount to thank you and your family for your service. Whether you’re shipping a car to Charlotte or Fort Bragg, our team is here to support your relocation needs.
Reviews from our North Carolina Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied North Carolina customers:
“Sherpa had a good rating on Better Business Bureau and it said that Sherpa was a bit more expensive than some of the other ones, but they had a guarantee to get your car moved in the appropriate time frame. I realized that in that industry, they give you a date but it would float a couple of days here or there. So, it`s not definitive because they are just an agent. They`re not actually moving the car. I was always moving out of state, so I wanted to make sure that I had that whole week. I would still be up in New York. So, I decided to call them and get a quote. I had some lowball quotes, but most of them were at 700, 800. The rep gave me a quote of 1,900 and I said to him, “Look, don`t you guys have some more guarantees than the other companies?” But $1,900, that`s more than double. He ended up inputting the wrong destination. He put it in California rather than North Carolina. So, he went back to check it, and then he said, “Oh, wait a minute. I screwed up. Hold on one second.” He then did it. They were a bit more expensive, but I wanted my car to get down there. I was moving to North Carolina and they`re based out of Charlotte.”
“The reps were very friendly when I signed up and were very accommodating with my schedule. I told them I needed to get the car picked up by a certain day, and I couldn’t get delivery for two more days and I wouldn’t be there to pick it up. So, they worked with someone who was willing to hold the car for a day before giving it to me. And even the driver was willing, too. I wanted it to be picked Thursday evening and then delivered either on Sunday or Monday. They initially said that they might not deliver on Sunday so they`ll deliver on Monday, which was fine by me. The driver they contacted was very friendly and when he picked up, he said he didn’t live so far away, so he could probably come and give it to me on Sunday if it works out with Sherpa. He delivered it to me on Sunday. The transport was last minute so the cost was a little more expensive than what the others were providing. The others were around $500 and Sherpa was around 750. But the others wouldn`t respond back or couldn`t find proper drivers for the price and Sherpa could find it within a couple of hours since I called them. So, it was worth the extra money that I paid to get the car transported on my own timeline. They also found the driver within a couple of hours.”
“You can`t go wrong with Sherpa! I admit that I initially placed an order with a different company — two companies actually. Neither could find a driver to transport my brand new Genesis GV70 from NC to NV in an enclosed trailer. I even paid the first company in full, and six days later they hadn`t even tried to find a driver. So eight days after buying a car in NC, I called Sherpa. The Sherpa rep explained the process of basically bidding for a space on a truck, and put me on hold while she looked up the current rate. To put it simply, with a low ball rate, the car is going to sit there. A more competitive rate will get it picked up quicker. I asked her point blank how quickly she thought she could find a driver. She said there was a 96% chance of picking up the car within 4 days. Because I placed the order before noon EDST, she was able to get the order posted that same day. Mind you, this was two days before the July 4th weekend, during a pandemic. Just over 24 hours later I received a call from Mavistar who had accepted the order. And 24 hours after that I received a personal text from the Mavistar driver who confirmed he had picked up my car and would be updating me on his progress as he drove across the country. This driver was AWESOME. He texted or called me every night and updated me on his ETA. Six days after I placed my order, my car was sitting in my driveway in pristine condition. You get what you pay for. If you want budget-level customer service, go with a different company. Sherpa prides itself on doing business the right way, and that they did! I couldn`t be happier with them.”
“I cancelled with the first company that I went with and then I saw the Sherpa advertisement online. It looked very decent to me and I contacted them. They said they could do the move for $2,300. They also guaranteed that it would be an enclosed transport and that my car would be delivered within six days. So I signed up with them. They picked up my car on a Wednesday and it was delivered on Saturday morning, so it was within three days. The drivers told me they drove day and night. They took turns driving. The drivers and Sherpa called me. They kept me informed at all times where my car was so I could expect delivery and communicate with the person that was receiving it in Portland. It was excellent communication. They really took good care of my car. The price was decent given the fact that they only transported two cars in one trip. It was a 2,600-mile trip so there was not much money to be made with two cars transporting. Everything was a straight deal. There was no damage on my car when it was delivered and nothing was missing inside. It was a pleasant experience. I would recommend Sherpa to anybody who needs a car transport.”
“I broke down at a resort about 300 miles from home and I had no way to do anything and didn`t know anybody. I got online and looked for people. I called about 10 different brokers. They just pestered me and told me they get cheaper. That doesn`t happen in that business. You can`t guarantee that unless you own the truck yourself. Sherpa`s customer service, on the other hand, was totally transparent about everything, how the transport brokerage works, and that you can get it cheaper. But if you do it cheaper, the truckers aren`t going to want to do it. With Sherpa, I paid more than other people were asking but I got the type of service you should get for that price. They offered me a price and said the pickup window was seven days. I was home at the time and I needed my car. I asked if there was a way to do this faster and they said, “With $25, we can pick it up tomorrow.” The driver was fantastic. He texted and called all the time every step of the way. The experience with Sherpa was fantastic.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Charlotte, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
