Factors that affect Chapel Hill Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Chapel Hill, NC. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to Chapel Hill. Enclosed transport, while about 50% pricier and potentially slower, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against North Carolina’s occasional severe weather.
- Location Accessibility: Chapel Hill’s proximity to major routes like I-40 and I-85 can help reduce costs. However, if you’re shipping to or from more remote areas of North Carolina, prices may increase.
- Seasonal Factors: Car shipping prices to Chapel Hill may fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months and January often see higher rates due to increased demand, while spring and fall can offer more competitive pricing.
- Vehicle Specifications: The size, weight, and condition of your vehicle affect shipping costs. Larger or inoperable vehicles typically cost more to transport to or from Chapel Hill.
- Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more cost-effective car shipping to Chapel Hill. Rush or guaranteed delivery services usually come at a premium.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Chapel Hill car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.

- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-40 or I-85. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during auto transport.
- Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates to increase your chances of finding the most cost-effective car shipping options. Consider nearby cities like Durham or Raleigh for potential savings on your Chapel Hill car transport.
- Opt for off-peak seasons: If possible, schedule your auto transport during less busy times of the year. Avoiding peak moving seasons can result in better rates for shipping a car to or from Chapel Hill, NC.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Chapel Hill?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Chapel Hill
When planning car shipping to or from Chapel Hill, NC, it’s crucial to consider the seasonal factors that can impact your auto transport experience. Chapel Hill experiences all four seasons, each with its own considerations for car shipping services.
Spring and Fall: These are ideal times to ship a car to Chapel Hill. The mild weather reduces the risk of weather-related delays. However, be aware that Chapel Hill car shipping can get busier during college move-in and move-out periods, typically in August and May.
Summer: While generally favorable for car transport, summer in Chapel Hill can be hot and humid. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior.
- Remove any heat-sensitive items from the car.
- Consider scheduling pick-up/drop-off in the cooler morning hours.
Winter: Chapel Hill experiences mild winters, but occasional snow and ice can occur. When using car shipping services in winter:
- Ensure pick-up/drop-off locations are on level ground, avoiding steep inclines.
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport.
- Don’t leave liquids that might freeze in the car.
Remember, Chapel Hill, NC is a college town, so auto transport demand peaks around the start and end of academic terms. To avoid higher prices and potential delays, consider scheduling your car shipping a few weeks before or after these busy periods. By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smooth and efficient car shipping experience to or from Chapel Hill.
Car Shipping for College Students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina
When considering car shipping to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, university students and parents should be aware of parking regulations. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, parking is managed through a permit system. Students must register their vehicles and purchase a parking permit to park on campus. Most off-campus apartments offer parking, but it’s essential to confirm this before signing a lease. For winter break, students can store their cars in designated long-term parking lots on campus. Chapel Hill’s mild climate means snow tires aren’t typically necessary, but it’s wise to check your vehicle’s weatherproofing. Before using auto transport services to ship your car to Chapel Hill, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage are valid in North Carolina. Lastly, consider the convenience of car shipping companies for hassle-free transport to and from campus, especially for out-of-state students or those without time for a long drive.
Reviews from our North Carolina Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied North Carolina customers:
“Sherpa Auto Transport didn’t have the cheapest price, and according to what I read, they said don’t go by the cheapest price. So, I went with the price that was more in the middle to the upper range and Sherpa came down in price at the end. Everything went fine and ahead of schedule. The only thing is I told Sherpa to have the driver call me when he was a bit away from the location to pick up the vehicle to give me a bit of time to get a payment out to a customer. But that didn’t happen. He called me when he was there. Good thing I was home. I would Sherpa again if I need to.”
“Sherpa Auto Transport offered a good rate, which is why I went with them. They are one of the top-rated services and that was important to me because I have dealt with some sketchy moving companies in the past. I had a fantastic experience with the transport. I found it to be simple. Driver communication was fantastic. I had left the state prior to the pickup, so the driver was accommodating and was able to go and pick up the car on her own, which I appreciated. Pickup was not quite as smooth, but I`m not upset about it. There was a bit of a language barrier, so that was the only issue there, but that`s not a big deal to me. It was tough communicating with the driver. But once we started texting, it was easier. The car came in good time. The driver was accommodating. My car showed up in perfect condition. It was a reliable service and I would use Sherpa again if I had to move back to North Carolina.”
“Most transport companies are pretty much like Uber – they set up the drivers but don’t have much control over those drivers or what they do. I’ve shipped several vehicles with other companies and usually get a call that a driver needs an extra $100 from what was contracted. It’s usually right before pickup so you’re forced into it. I’ve had one vehicle dropped off at 3 am on a public road and received a text at 9 am – got to my car just before tow truck arrived. My expectations were low but Sherpa was awesome. Rep assured me they don’t keep drivers on their list that do what I experienced. Price is guaranteed not to change and there were no surprises there. They worked to meet my schedule needs and met them. Driver was thorough and communicated well. We won’t use anybody else moving forward.”
“You can`t go wrong with Sherpa! I admit that I initially placed an order with a different company — two companies actually. Neither could find a driver to transport my brand new Genesis GV70 from NC to NV in an enclosed trailer. I even paid the first company in full, and six days later they hadn`t even tried to find a driver. So eight days after buying a car in NC, I called Sherpa. The Sherpa rep explained the process of basically bidding for a space on a truck, and put me on hold while she looked up the current rate. To put it simply, with a low ball rate, the car is going to sit there. A more competitive rate will get it picked up quicker. I asked her point blank how quickly she thought she could find a driver. She said there was a 96% chance of picking up the car within 4 days. Because I placed the order before noon EDST, she was able to get the order posted that same day. Mind you, this was two days before the July 4th weekend, during a pandemic. Just over 24 hours later I received a call from Mavistar who had accepted the order. And 24 hours after that I received a personal text from the Mavistar driver who confirmed he had picked up my car and would be updating me on his progress as he drove across the country. This driver was AWESOME. He texted or called me every night and updated me on his ETA. Six days after I placed my order, my car was sitting in my driveway in pristine condition. You get what you pay for. If you want budget-level customer service, go with a different company. Sherpa prides itself on doing business the right way, and that they did! I couldn`t be happier with them.”
“I used Sherpa Auto Transport to transport a Jeep from Charlotte, NC to Austin, TX two weeks ago and was very pleased with their service. They were very easy to work with, kept in contact with me, followed up on any questions, picked up and delivered as scheduled, and were fairly priced. When the carrier Sherpa hired to transport my vehicle had not contact me as planned, I called Sherpa who immediately contacted the carrier, then followed up to see that the carrier had called me. At each stage of the process, Sherpa kept me up to date with emails as to the status of the transport. The driver for the carrier communicated with me on the days of pickup and delivery as to the specific time (within an hour) and location for pick-up and drop-off, as the truck was too large for some neighborhood streets. The driver also took good care loading, securing, and unloading my vehicle. I worked primarily with one contact at Sherpa for the entire process but when she wasn’t available her colleague addressed and followed up on my question quickly. I highly recommend that Sherpa Auto Transport be considered for any of your vehicle transport needs.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Chapel Hill, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
