Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Asheville customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Forgot the others like Montway with their bait and switch. Sherpa may present as costing more, but they will actually get the job done. Montway who quoted a price and when they never arrived one day before I was leaving town, I called them and they said, “Oh, you didn`t have a guaranteed date or price.” I was like what!!! Called Sherpa and they arrived the next day. Do it the right way the first time out, call Sherpa.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I had a new car transported from NJ to Asheville, NC. The process went very well and I was pleased with the customer service, price, and delivery time (less than a week to get the car). The only minor problem was that I didn`t get a timely call from the driver, and he ended up showing up at my house – lucky I was home!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“My vehicle was delivered on time and in perfect condition. The driver was friendly and professional. Communication was very good. Promised price was respected. Pick up and drop off procedures were easy and all online. Bill of Lading was delivered digitally and easy to track. I will use Sherpa in the future if needed.”

Factors that affect Asheville Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Asheville, NC. Longer distances typically result in higher prices, but the per-mile rate often decreases for longer trips.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger and heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, generally cost more to ship than smaller cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier and their impact on fuel consumption.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to Asheville. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers additional protection from weather and road debris, which can be beneficial during Asheville’s occasional severe weather events.
  • Route Accessibility: Asheville’s location in the Blue Ridge Mountains can affect shipping costs. While the city is accessible via I-26 and I-40, some rural areas may require additional time and resources, potentially increasing the price.
  • Seasonal Factors: Asheville’s popularity as a tourist destination can influence car shipping prices. Peak tourist seasons, particularly in summer and fall, may lead to higher demand and increased rates for auto transport services.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are less expensive to ship as they can be driven onto the carrier. Inoperable vehicles require special equipment for loading, which can increase the cost of car shipping to or from Asheville.
  • Flexibility: Being flexible with pickup and delivery dates can often result in lower car shipping costs. Sherpa Auto Transport offers a cost-effective five-day pickup window for those with flexible schedules.

Understanding these factors can help you better estimate the cost of shipping your car to or from Asheville, NC. For more detailed information on car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re considering enclosed transport, learn more about the differences between open vs. enclosed car shipping.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Asheville car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially bundle your vehicle with others, increasing the chance of discounts.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping offers the lowest rates and most flexibility for negotiating prices. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport is usually the most cost-effective option.
  • Optimize pickup/dropoff locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major interstates like I-40 or I-26. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your overall price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues. Car shipping companies aren’t responsible for items left in the vehicle.
  • Be flexible with dates: The more flexible you are with pickup and delivery dates, the better options you’ll have for auto transport to or from Asheville. This flexibility can lead to cost savings and smoother scheduling.
  • Consider terminal-to-door or door-to-terminal: While Sherpa specializes in door-to-door service, discussing pickup or delivery at easily accessible locations in Asheville can sometimes reduce costs compared to full door-to-door transport.

How does Asheville Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process to or from Asheville, NC, can be a breeze with the right preparation. Here’s a step-by-step guide tailored for the Asheville area:

1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company. This will give you an idea of costs based on factors like your vehicle type and the specific route to or from Asheville.

2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, Asheville’s mountainous terrain may affect pickup and delivery times, so flexibility is key.

3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Asheville’s climate can be unpredictable, so ensure your car is ready for transport. This includes a thorough wash, inspection, and maintenance check. Remove personal items and keep only a quarter tank of gas.

4. Meet the Carrier: Your auto transport company will arrange a pickup location. Given Asheville’s hilly landscape, this might be in a more accessible area if your home is hard to reach.

5. Track Your Shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Most routes to and from Asheville will utilize I-26 or I-40, so familiarize yourself with these highways.

6. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon arrival, inspect your car thoroughly and complete the necessary paperwork. Remember, Asheville’s weather can be changeable, so be prepared for potential delays.

Asheville Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping your car to or from Asheville, NC, it’s essential to be aware of local vehicle requirements and regulations. North Carolina has specific rules for vehicle registration and inspection that you should consider. Upon arrival, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 60 days. The process involves providing proof of ownership, insurance, and passing a safety inspection. Asheville doesn’t use a toll system, so there’s no need to worry about removing toll readers.

For those moving to Asheville, setting up utilities is a crucial step. Duke Energy is the primary electricity provider, while the City of Asheville manages water services. For internet, you have options like AT&T, Spectrum, and EarthLink. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if you have children, enroll them in the Buncombe County School System.

Asheville’s climate is mild, but the city experiences all four seasons. When planning your car shipping to Asheville, consider the timing. Winter can bring occasional snow, especially in higher elevations, which might affect auto transport schedules. The city is accessible via I-26 and I-40, making it convenient for car transport companies to deliver vehicles.

If you’re moving away from Asheville, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and return any library books. For those arriving, obtaining a library card from the Buncombe County Public Libraries is a great way to connect with the community.

When choosing a car shipping company for your move to or from Asheville, look for providers experienced with the area’s unique geography. The city’s location in the Blue Ridge Mountains can present challenges for car shipping services, so selecting a company familiar with mountain routes is crucial for a smooth auto transport experience.

Asheville, North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Asheville?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Asheville. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Asheville?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Asheville?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Asheville?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

In winter, snowfall and icy conditions can affect car shipping services. Keep these tips in mind:

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied North Carolina customers:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I had a very smooth experience with Sherpa. I talked to someone on the phone and they made the arrangements and it went without a hitch. We met beside a Walmart because we lived down a gravel road on a one-way street. It was very difficult. I felt they should not even try. I got a phone call. I met the gentleman with the trailer and we loaded it all and it was done and gone and delivered to the new location. It went just like they said it would go. The gentleman that picked it up did a good job. We both did pick up, and then my daughter accepted it for us in Asheville and she said it went fine. I would recommend using them.”

Consumer Affairs

“My mother passed away and she wanted my niece to have her car. So, I was shipping her car up to my niece. I found Sherpa through an online search and I had a very short contact with their phone representative. I got emails from them after the original follow-up and then from there, I talked to the driver directly. The driver that came and picked it up was awesome and he got it there in a timely manner. I was extremely pleased. Also, their final price was the exact quoted price. And that was one reason I chose Sherpa. They generally delivered at the quoted price and that was not always the case with a lot of the other services.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“My daughter moved from Oregon to North Carolina. We were overwhelmed by all the car transport services and heard several scams were out there. I was so impressed with Sherpa. I paid for the 5 day pick up and they were able to pick up her car next day. the driver contacted me and let me know that he had extra room on his truck and to load up my daughters car. (Initially, we just had 100 lbs of bins in the back). That solved the burden of shipping all of her belongings. (**not all drivers can or are able to let you fill the cars-mine had extra weight available) 7 days later her car arrived in perfect condition. We will be getting a $100 refund for providing Sherpa with the bill of lading and $20 towards a car wash! we paid $1405 and Sherpa has a $300 promise to pay if drivers run into any additional costs. we felt safe, confident, and appreciative of the service we received. highly highly recommend!”

“Thank you so much for the fabulous experience we recently had transporting our car with Sherpa. Just as states starting closing down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our daughter`s car died. She is an ICU nurse at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and would have taken the bus if the social distancing order was not in effect. We had an extra car for her to use in North Carolina but couldn`t get it to her because of the quarantine order in Maryland. When I explained our situation to Fern in your Charlotte office, she was extremely sympathetic and helpful. After three days without a driver taking our route, Sherpa waived its fee and offered its portion of the transport cost in order to give incentive to a driver to deliver our car. A driver was assigned that day, and our daughter received the car the following day. She was grateful beyond words, as were we. Thank you for working to protect our daughter as she is already on the frontline in healthcare. We have spread the word wherever we can about Sherpa`s willingness to look beyond the profit in order to help someone in need.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“This is the 4th year using Sherpa and I could not be happier with them. They provide a 5-day pick-up date but I have yet to wait the whole 5 days. Last Sunday I called to get a quote, and by Tuesday, the car was picked up and by Thursday my son`s car shipped from NC to RI! They are quick to get shipments completed and their communication throughout the whole process is incredible. The drivers are also awesome, I was constantly getting updates from them. Don`t be fooled by other transportation companies, they will give you an estimate a lot lower but will result in a horrible experience. Do yourself a favor and don`t bother with the other companies, Sherpa is honestly the best for your transportation needs.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Asheville, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
