Factors that affect North Carolina Car Shipping Prices

  • Distance: The length of the journey is a key factor in determining shipping costs. North Carolina's central East Coast location means shorter, less expensive trips to nearby states like Virginia or South Carolina, while cross-country shipments to places like California will cost more.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for most customers. Enclosed transport, while about 50% pricier and potentially slower, offers extra protection from North Carolina's varied weather, from coastal storms to mountain snow.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Urban areas like Charlotte or Raleigh are typically cheaper for shipping than rural mountain or coastal regions. Consider meeting your carrier near major highways like I-95 or I-85 to potentially reduce costs.
  • Flexibility: Opting for Sherpa's standard five-day pickup window is the most budget-friendly choice. Rush services for quicker pickup will increase your costs.
  • Vehicle Specifications: Larger, heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Also, cars with low ground clearance, common in coastal areas, may require special handling and thus higher fees.
  • Vehicle Condition: Non-running cars are pricier to ship as they need special equipment for loading. Ensure your vehicle is in working order to keep costs down.
  • Seasonal Factors: Summer is peak moving season in North Carolina, especially for college towns like Chapel Hill or Boone. Expect higher rates during this time and in January when "snowbirds" head south.
  • Route Popularity: Well-traveled routes, like those between North Carolina and Florida or New York, often have more competitive pricing due to higher carrier availability.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your vehicle to or from North Carolina. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your shipment at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for multiple pickups in North Carolina cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, or Greensboro.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility for negotiating better prices.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Work with Sherpa advisers to find locations near major interstates like I-40, I-85, or I-95. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues. Car shipping companies aren't responsible for items left in the vehicle.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates. Consider meeting the carrier at easily accessible locations near major highways, such as rest areas along I-77 or I-26, to potentially save on your transport costs.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons in North Carolina, such as summer months when many college students are relocating. Off-peak times may offer more competitive rates.
