- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our North Carolina customers say about Sherpa:
“The experience with Sherpa Auto Transport was seamless and the price was fair. I picked the transport company based on their D&B. It was a local transport firm in Charlotte. We live on close to a waterway, south of the Cape Fear River, which is Wilmington, North Carolina and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The requirements were established with the logistical company that we called and we wanted it in an enclosed van and we wanted it to be a direct route.”
“I was a bit nervous purchasing a car in California sight unseen and having it transported to North Carolina. I connected with Sherpa on-line to receive a quote and timing. I was pleasantly surprised to not only receive the quote in email but a phone call to review the quote and details. Long story short the team at Sherpa was always available to answer any questions I had along the way and very transparent throughout the entire process.”
“Thank you so much for the fabulous experience we recently had transporting our car with Sherpa. Just as states starting closing down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our daughter’s car died. She is an ICU nurse at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and would have taken the bus if the social distancing order was not in effect. We had an extra car for her to use in North Carolina but couldn’t get it to her because of the quarantine order in Maryland.”

Factors that affect North Carolina Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: North Carolina’s location on the East Coast affects shipping costs. Longer distances, such as shipping from the West Coast, typically result in higher prices. However, North Carolina’s extensive highway network, including I-95, I-85, and I-40, can help streamline transport and potentially reduce costs.
- Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from North Carolina. Enclosed trailers, while offering more protection, are about 50% more expensive and usually take longer for delivery. They’re typically only necessary for high-value or classic cars.
- Pickup and Drop-off Locations: Shipping to major North Carolina cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, or Greensboro is generally cheaper than to rural areas. Consider meeting the carrier in a larger city to potentially save on costs.
- Seasonal Factors: North Carolina’s mild climate means car shipping is viable year-round. However, prices may increase during summer months due to higher demand. Winter weather in the mountains could occasionally affect transport times and costs.
- Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Also, inoperable vehicles require special equipment, increasing the price. Ensure your car is in working condition to keep costs down.
- Flexibility: Being flexible with your pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for car shipping to or from North Carolina. Rush orders typically cost more.
Understanding these factors can help you navigate the car shipping process more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your North Carolina car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is typically more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates, especially for standard vehicles.
- Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and drop-off points near major North Carolina interstates like I-40, I-85, or I-95. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your auto transport to or from North Carolina. Consider weekday shipments, which may be less expensive than weekend transports.
- Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer or holidays. Shipping your car during off-peak times can result in more competitive pricing for North Carolina auto transport services.

North Carolina Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When relocating to or from North Carolina, it’s crucial to understand the state’s vehicle requirements and regulations. North Carolina car shipping experts recommend removing your E-ZPass or NC Quick Pass transponder before shipping a car to avoid unexpected toll charges. For those moving to NC, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 60 days. The process involves a safety inspection, emissions test (in some counties), and proof of insurance. Be prepared to pay property taxes on your vehicle as part of the registration process.
North Carolina’s climate varies from the coastal plains to the mountains, so consider this when planning your auto transport. Hurricanes can affect the eastern part of the state, while the western regions may experience snow in winter. This diversity might influence your choice of car shipping services and timing.
When settling in North Carolina, you’ll need to set up utilities. Major providers include Duke Energy for electricity and various municipal water services. For internet, options like Spectrum, AT&T, and Google Fiber are available in many areas. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in local schools.
If you’re leaving North Carolina, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify the DMV of your move. When choosing a car shipping company, consider one familiar with North Carolina’s major interstates like I-40, I-85, and I-95 for efficient car transport.
Whether you’re moving to enjoy the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains or departing from the Outer Banks, understanding these local nuances will make your transition smoother. Remember, a reputable North Carolina car shipping service can provide valuable guidance throughout the process of shipping a car to or from the Tar Heel State.
North Carolina Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from North Carolina?

In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from North Carolina?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from North Carolina?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to North Carolina?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in North Carolina
When planning car shipping to or from North Carolina, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse climate and seasonal factors. North Carolina experiences all four seasons, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, particularly in the western mountainous regions, snow and ice can affect car shipping services. If you’re shipping during this time:
- Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent issues on icy surfaces.
- Remove any items from your car that might freeze and potentially damage the vehicle.
During summer, especially in the coastal plains, high temperatures can impact your car transport experience. Consider these tips:
- Place a sunshade under your car’s windshield to protect the interior.
- Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt during transport.
- Check your vehicle’s coolant levels before shipping.
Beyond weather, timing is crucial when shipping a car to or from North Carolina. Be aware of these peak periods:
- College towns: Expect increased demand for auto transport services at the beginning and end of academic semesters.
- Military bases: Cities like Fayetteville may see spikes in car shipping needs during training cycles or deployment periods.
- Tourist seasons: Coastal areas experience higher traffic during summer months, potentially affecting car shipping schedules.
To ensure a smooth North Carolina car shipping experience, consider booking your transport a few weeks before or after these peak times. By planning ahead and staying informed about seasonal factors, you can make your auto transport to or from North Carolina as efficient and stress-free as possible.
Car Shipping for College Students in North Carolina
When considering car shipping or auto transport to North Carolina universities, it’s crucial to understand each school’s parking policies. At UNC Chapel Hill, students must register their vehicles and purchase a parking permit, with limited on-campus parking available. NC State University offers various parking options, including resident and commuter permits, but spaces can be competitive. For Duke University, most undergraduate students are not permitted to park on campus, making car shipping services a valuable option for move-in and move-out days.
Before shipping a car to your North Carolina campus, consider these tips:
- Check if your dorm or apartment includes parking, as many off-campus housing options do not.
- Inquire about long-term storage options for winter and summer breaks.
- Prepare for occasional snow by keeping an ice scraper and blanket in your car.
- Verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to North Carolina.
- Research local car transport companies for affordable options to ship your car home during breaks.
Remember, North Carolina car shipping can be a convenient solution for students who don’t need their vehicles year-round. Many car shipping companies offer special rates for college students, making it easier to manage your transportation needs throughout your academic career.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in North Carolina
North Carolina is home to several military installations, making it a hub for service members and their families. Fort Bragg, one of the largest military complexes in the world, is located near Fayetteville. On-base parking is available, but spaces can be limited. Many service members opt to live off-base in nearby communities, where parking is generally more accessible. Camp Lejeune, a major Marine Corps base, is situated in Jacksonville. Here, on-base housing often includes designated parking areas.
When shipping a car to these bases, it’s essential to coordinate with your unit for specific parking instructions. Most installations require vehicle registration within a certain timeframe of arrival. The North Carolina DMV offers a Military/Veteran indicator on licenses and IDs, which can be helpful for various services.
For those living off-base, many neighborhoods around military installations are accustomed to service members and have ample parking. However, it’s always wise to check local regulations. Resources like commissaries and exchanges are available on most bases, offering significant savings on groceries and other necessities.
At Sherpa Auto Transport, we’re proud to offer a $50 military discount on our car shipping services. We sincerely thank all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice. Whether you’re relocating to Fort Bragg, Camp Lejeune, or any other North Carolina military installation, our team is here to ensure your vehicle arrives safely and on time.
Reviews from our North Carolina Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied North Carolina customers:
“This is the 4th year using Sherpa and I could not be happier with them. They provide a 5-day pick-up date but I have yet to wait the whole 5 days. Last Sunday I called to get a quote, and by Tuesday, the car was picked up and by Thursday my son`s car shipped from North Carolina to RI! They are quick to get shipments completed and their communication throughout the whole process is incredible. The drivers are also awesome, I was constantly getting updates from them. Don`t be fooled by other transportation companies, they will give you an estimate a lot lower but will result in a horrible experience. Do yourself a favor and don`t bother with the other companies, Sherpa is honestly the best for your transportation needs.”
“I researched about 10 or so transporters for my vehicle. I needed a classic car shipped from North Carolina to NY. Sherpa was one of the top transport companies I came across while doing my research. As anyone should be, I was skeptical as I had never done this type of blind transaction. After talking to a Rep, I decided to book with SHERPA. I will say that I am 1000000% satisfied. Everything was up front. No hidden gimmicks or fees. They picked up and delivered my vehicle in the time frame they said they would. My car was delivered with no issues WHATSOEVER. I may never need another Auto transport. If I ever did, I would definitely use SHERPA again. Hats off to you guys.”
“I had initially booked another company to ship my car, but they failed to meet my pickup/delivery date. My car was being shipped from North Carolina to CA. I then reached out to Sherpa and explained to them my desired time frame and they exceeded my expectations. 05/06 I chose Sherpa as my carrier and my car was picked up on 05/07. My car was delivered on 05/11 with no issues. They communicated very well and I would highly recommend to anyone looking to ship your car.”
“As seamless of an experience as possible for a cross country shipment from North Carolina to WA. Easy to coordinate and communicate as needed, which was minimal for me. They were priced about the same as other similar companies, if not cheaper. The drivers showed up on time for pickup and were flexible with dropoff. Very nice guy, too. They also delivered my car days earlier than their initial estimate. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to others.”
“The service was timely. The driver was friendly, professional, dependable and personable. He even offered us some great places to visit while we were in North Carolina. The car was delivered in the condition it was picked up in. As he removed the car from the truck I observed how he treated the vehicle with care as if it was his own. So, for that I am thankful.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in North Carolina, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of North Carolina. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
Fun Facts About Car Shipping

- Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
- The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
- Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
- Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
