  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.

  • Distance and Route: The distance between pickup and delivery locations significantly affects car shipping costs to and from Watertown, NY. Routes along major highways like I-81 are typically more cost-effective than those using smaller roads.
  • Seasonal Factors: Watertown’s harsh winters can impact auto transport prices. Snowy conditions on local roads and highways may lead to increased costs and potential delays during the colder months.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your car affect shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks will generally cost more to transport than compact cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Transport Method: Open car transport is the most common and affordable option for shipping to or from Watertown. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, offers additional protection from road debris and weather conditions.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Urban areas near Watertown, such as Syracuse or Albany, may offer more competitive pricing compared to rural locations due to easier access for carriers.
  • Timing and Flexibility: Being flexible with your pickup and delivery dates can often result in lower car shipping costs. Peak seasons, like summer months, typically see higher prices due to increased demand.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Watertown?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

“I live in Georgia and bought a car at a New York State. I had hired a transport company to start with and they weren’t getting anything done after about nine days. So, I was doing some research online and got some good feedback about Sherpa. They were mostly Americans. Most of the people I was dealing with that other company were not and they could barely understand them talking on the phone. I called the representative with Sherpa and they were easy to talk to and deal with. They understood my dilemma and they had me a driver in three days. The price was what they told me. I paid $450 more than I’d do with the previous company that I hired and fired but it was worth it. From what I understood, that was about what it was gonna cost anyway to get the car delivered. I did some research and was asking questions on a trucker transport forum. They were all saying that the price that I was given wouldn’t get anybody to bring the car to me. They said if I’d pay for the transport in the 1,400 to 1,500 bucks, I’d get it. And that was what I did. I ended up paying 1,500. But the driver that Sherpa had hired was professional, excellent, very helpful and very polite. He was top-notch. I would use that guy again. Even after he got the car off the trailer, he was helping me with the car. The reps from Sherpa were fantastic. I talked to two different guys and they were top-notch. They were very courteous, knowledgeable and helpful. They said that even if they needed to up the amount of money paid to the driver, they would lower their cost to the company in order to get the car to me. I’m very pleased with them. The condition of the vehicles is what it was when it left. There was no damage. Overall, the experience was great and I was very pleased with their service from Sherpa.”

“My sister was living down from New York. She was gonna drive, but then we decided that it wasn’t in her best interest to drive. I had to get her car down to Florida. I tried one other place first and I called them up. They didn’t answer the phone and so I looked at some online reviews, and I saw some pretty good ones for Sherpa. I called them up. The guy was super nice. He quoted me $1,000. The first quote I got from the other place was $895. I told him that I got a quote lower than that. He said that that the other company would probably call me back after they pick up the car and say that they were having trouble or this or that, and it would be this much more. I went with Sherpa and gave him a $300 deposit. Then he went over everything. It was very clear that I would give the driver $700. I brought my sister down to Florida. We took the car over to my cousin’s. They picked up the car a few days later because time wasn’t critical. Then a week later, I got a call from the driver. He asked me where he could drop it off ’cause he had a big semi. We met, picked up the car, paid him the 700, and everything was perfect. Incidentally, the guy at the other place that I called first was a real jerk. He called me a few days later and said that they couldn’t do the move for 895 and that it would be more like 1,495. I was pissed off. I told him that somebody else already did it for 1,000. Then he said the same thing that the Sherpa guy said, that the company would call back and tell they had trouble with the truck. Overall, it went great. I was very pleased.”

“I was moving my car from New York to Florida and needed a transport service. I looked at three companies. I let the company that I initially chose know that I needed to have the transport done as soon as possible. But I didn’t get a callback and it was quite a while. I waited until I went to the next one then the next one. I found Sherpa to be fairly quick and they were able to do the transport within a few days. The quote I got from Sherpa was higher than the initial quote from the other company. But I was told that was the reason I was waiting so long. The other company had underquoted and nobody wanted to take the job. Sherpa’s quote was reasonable. And the quote at the end of the job was the same as what I originally received. I would recommend Sherpa. They did the job exactly the way they said they would. The driver was very efficient and friendly. The car was delivered within the time that they said it would be.”

“It was such a struggle for me to figure out which transport company to choose. I did so much research, read so many horror stories and I couldn’t bear the thought of being amongst the many disappointed persons who felt blindsided by original quotes or by unfulfilled promises from many other transport companies that look for your business. So what I decided on doing was going with my gut and trusting the search I did on the Top 10 best auto transport companies out there…and I went with #1 SHERPA TRANSPORT. I can’t express enough how well informed they were with me..their eagerness to reassure me and their following through with my expectations. My vehicle arrived intact…I was blessed that Sherpa Auto contracted a wonderful carrier…the driver contacted me and arrived on a timely manner and very professional. So all you nervous wrecks out there who question what to do…take it from me ..my satisfaction was 1000% positive!! Thanks Sherpa for your diligence and honesty. By the way, in case you’re wondering I transported a 2014 Ford Focus SE with only 29,000 miles from New York to Pheonix Arizona. My son’s first car while he’s training to become a commercial airline pilot!!”

“I bought a car in New York – I’m in Illinois! Yikes! So, I had to get it home. I picked Sherpa because my wife had heard fellow travel nurses who’d used them for transporting their travel trailers. They seemed reasonable and professional. They didn’t fail me! Got my car from New York to Illinois in less than a week! Got a $50 rebate for booking online. Got a $20 car wash reimbursed when it arrived as well. My only critique was the company they found to drive it here. The driver had a less than pleasant personality, was not going to give me any paperwork at the time of delivery until I asked for it. “Oh, you want a bill of laden? I guess I can fill one out for you.” Other than that, a seamless experience!”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Watertown, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New York. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
