Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Troy customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“For people who aren’t aware of how auto transport works, they need to be over-communicative. I was traveling with my son to meet at a location, and I was trying to have the vehicle show up on Tuesday when I got there, but the other company that I ultimately didn’t go with messed up our timing. Fortunately, it worked out. I ended up calling Sherpa on a Friday, and their customer service was good. Pickup and delivery also went smooth, and the communication with the driver was excellent.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa had consistently good reviews about its reliability and ease to deal with and I experienced that. They told me that they charge a certain amount until they got a driver, and then they gave me a pick-up point, and instructions were very clear. They gave me the number of the driver throughout the way so I could check up on them. It was very fast, too. They got it in two days. It was faster than anticipated.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa was great, even though it came down to the last day for someone to pick up our contract, Sherpa said someone would and sure enough it did happen. The gentleman who arrived picked up the vehicle even though it was a difficult parking job for the semi they made it work. Would use them again!”

Factors that affect Troy Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: Troy’s location in upstate New York affects shipping costs. Longer distances, such as shipping to or from the West Coast, will generally be more expensive than shorter routes within the Northeast.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Troy. Enclosed transport, while about 50% pricier, offers extra protection from weather and road debris, which can be beneficial during Troy’s snowy winters.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Troy’s proximity to Albany and major highways like I-87 and I-90 can help keep costs down. Rural locations further from these routes may increase shipping prices.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, will cost more to ship to or from Troy than smaller cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Time of Year: Auto transport to Troy may be pricier in winter due to challenging weather conditions. Summer months also see increased demand and potentially higher prices.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship. If your car doesn’t start or roll, expect to pay more for special equipment needed to load it onto the carrier.
  • Flexibility: Being flexible with your pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for car shipping to or from Troy. Rush or guaranteed delivery options will increase the cost.

Understanding these factors can help you estimate the cost of shipping your car to or from Troy, NY. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re considering enclosed transport for added protection during Troy’s harsh winters, learn more about open vs. enclosed car shipping.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Troy car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling vehicles from the same area.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-787 or I-90. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your overall shipping price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues. Car shipping companies aren’t responsible for personal belongings left in the vehicle.
  • Be flexible: Offering flexibility in pickup and delivery dates can lead to better options and potential savings. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective shipping times.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to and from Troy, NY can be affected by weather conditions. Planning your shipment during milder seasons may result in more competitive pricing and faster transit times.

Troy, New York Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Troy?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Troy. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Troy?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Troy?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Troy?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Troy

When planning car shipping to or from Troy, NY, it’s crucial to consider the city’s seasonal weather patterns. Troy experiences all four seasons, with cold winters and warm summers, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.

During winter months (November to March), Troy car shipping can be challenging due to snow and ice. Here are some tips:

  • Avoid scheduling pickups or drop-offs on steep inclines, as carriers need stable surfaces.
  • Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t ship vehicles with them installed.
  • Don’t leave items that could freeze and expand in your vehicle during transport.

In summer (June to August), temperatures can rise, affecting your car transport experience:

  • Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect your car’s interior.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle before shipping.

When shipping a car to Troy, also consider local events that may impact auto transport services:

  • August and May are busy due to college move-ins and move-outs. Consider scheduling your car shipping a few weeks before or after these peak times.
  • Troy hosts various festivals throughout the year, which can cause traffic congestion. Check the city’s event calendar when planning your car transport.

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smoother car shipping experience to or from Troy, NY. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on transporting your vehicle safely and efficiently.

“Sherpa was courteous, informative, helpful every step of the way. We had to ship my dad a new car from NJ to Naples Florida after the hurricane destroyed his previous car. We did a lot of research and Sherpa was by far the best company. Their price was fair and they followed through with everything they promised. They sent me updates every step of the way from beginning to end. Their driver was professional and courteous and the representative on the phone was very impressive and made me feel like our vehicle was in great hands and would be taken care of properly. I wouldn`t hesitate to use them again. There are a lot of bad transport companies out there and this is one you can trust!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa had a good rating on Better Business Bureau and it said that Sherpa was a bit more expensive than some of the other ones, but they had a guarantee to get your car moved in the appropriate time frame. I realized that in that industry, they give you a date but it would float a couple of days here or there. So, it`s not definitive because they are just an agent. They`re not actually moving the car. I was always moving out of state, so I wanted to make sure that I had that whole week. I would still be up in New York. So, I decided to call them and get a quote. I had some lowball quotes, but most of them were at 700, 800. The rep gave me a quote of 1,900 and I said to him, “Look, don`t you guys have some more guarantees than the other companies?” But $1,900, that`s more than double. He ended up inputting the wrong destination. He put it in California rather than North Carolina. So, he went back to check it, and then he said, “Oh, wait a minute. I screwed up. Hold on one second.” He then did it. They were a bit more expensive, but I wanted my car to get down there. I was moving to North Carolina and they`re based out of Charlotte. I called Sherpa the week before and they said, “Yeah, we don`t have anything yet. But typically, these things happen pretty quickly. We`ll let you know.” My first date was a Monday, 19th of July. Sherpa sent me an email on Sunday saying that, “We don`t have a driver yet, but we`re gonna keep you informed.” That was good to know that I was in the queue. I was surprised because Sherpa called me and said, “Okay, today`s the day, and guess what, we got a driver and the guy`s going to be there in a couple of hours.” He then told me the name of the company and said the guy would call me. He would be here in a couple of hours, which was accurate. So, I was prepared. I wish they gave me a bit more of a notice, but it was fine. I was home, and then the driver came. He called me when he got to my house and those folks were from North Carolina also. And the two folks from the company were very good. I gave one my daughter`s number, where he would drop the car off in North Carolina. I asked him when they would be there. Because with these auto transports, sometimes it would take three days. He said, “No, I`m going to be down there tomorrow. I`m probably not gonna get there till 5:00.” I said, “Okay, good. My daughter will be available any time after 3:00.” The driver was very courteous. I had a nice talk with him He got down there early and called my daughter. She said, “Look, I`m not going to be home until like 2:33.” He said, “Okay, no problem. I`ll hold off.” He came, dropped the car off, we had cash for him and everything worked out good. The car was in good shape, no dents. It looked exactly like it was in New York. They got my car up without incident and they were able to communicate to my destination. Everything worked out as planned and scheduled.”

“I called Sherpa Auto Transport and I got somebody. It was a person who spoke English. That made me happy because I felt we were communicating. And we had a discussion. He told me how it all worked and how much it would cost. We talked about dates. And somehow they got back to me. They set it up. It was very smooth. They told me there would be a driver. Somebody said he would call. I got anxious about the whole thing. Because I`m in the middle of Manhattan. My car is in a garage. I can drive it where they need to. But how would I do it in the middle of Manhattan? The driver called me up and said, “I`ll be there in the blah, blah, minutes”. And I went over to the garage and got the car. And I thought, “What am I going to do? I`m going to have to park it somewhere. And then I`m gonna find a parking space.” It ended up being nothing at all. So, I waited on 55th Street. Second Avenue goes from one end of Manhattan all the way down to the other end. It goes from north to south. And he said, “I`ll meet you at 54th in a second. I`ll have my transport there.” I drove over there. And there he was with the transport. He got out. And we looked at the car. We had a chit-chat about it. And he said, “All right. See you later.” He got in the car. Drove it on the transport. I turned around, took a picture of it and left. The driver was a sweetheart. He picked the car up on a Friday. And it was delivered on a Tuesday. Whoever did it in Texas was a different person than I talked to, who was the ultimate driver. He called her a half an hour. He said he was 10 miles out. But she didn`t answer the phone. So, the driver called me. And I called her. And he called her. She lives in Austin, Texas. She lives more out in the suburbs. And she said, he didn`t want to bring it on her street because there were too many trees. She said, “I just jogged over to the, you know. It wasn`t very far.” She sent me a thing and said, “There`s this little ding here.” I said, “Oh, that`s an old one.” There was nothing. And he gave her the keys. She signed it, she gave him the check, and that was that. It was very smooth. They had their stuff together. The car got there in no time. Sherpa was great. Everybody was professional. I would recommend them.”

“It was such a struggle for me to figure out which transport company to choose. I did so much research, read so many horror stories and I couldn`t bear the thought of being amongst the many disappointed persons who felt blindsided by original quotes or by unfulfilled promises from many other transport companies that look for your business. So what I decided on doing was going with my gut and trusting the search I did on the Top 10 best auto transport companies out there…and I went with #1 SHERPA TRANSPORT. I can`t express enough how well informed they were with me..their eagerness to reassure me and their following through with my expectations. My vehicle arrived intact…I was blessed that Sherpa Auto contracted a wonderful carrier…the driver contacted me and arrived on a timely manner and very professional. So all you nervous wrecks out there who question what to do…take it from me ..my satisfaction was 1000% positive!! Thanks Sherpa for your diligence and honesty. By the way, in case you`re wondering I transported a 2014 Ford Focus SE with only 29,000 miles from New York to Pheonix Arizona. My son`s first car while he`s training to become a commercial airline pilot!!”

Yelp

“I rarely give reviews, but I can`t wait to give Sherpa the rating it deserves on all platform. After weeks of research and decided to place trust on Sherpa to ship my car from NY to CA, they did not fail me. Sherpa really puts convenience and peace of mind over everything. My car arrives cross country in less than a week in perfect condition, and that`s not to mention the student discount and free car wash I am about to get from them. Sure, the price is definitely steep and not as enticing as other shipping companies out there, but it is locked and guaranteed, so you don`t have to worry about the hassle of the bidding business of the car shipping industry. I only had 4 phone calls since I signed up to get my car cross country a week later: one with Sherpa for a confirmation of a carrier, one with the carrier, and two with the carriers when delivery. My family and I placed a goal of having my car in CA by July 1st. Sherpa shattered that goal by twelve days. We were still amazed. If there`s only one suggestion I`d give Sherpa is that they would ask the carrier they partner with to be more communicative with the customer. Although Sherpa said they would give us a call 12-24 hours prior to pick up, they arrived to our pick up spot in NY unprompted. Had we not been home, the truck might had have to return another day. Luckily, the situation improves once I gave the carrier a call about this and they called me a day before delivery. The customer service, peace of mind and extremely quick delivery outweighs that cons though. Thanks, Sherpa.”

What is Car Shipping?

These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New York. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
