Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.

  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: Syracuse’s central location in New York affects shipping costs. Longer distances, such as cross-country transport, typically result in higher prices for car shipping services.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to and from Syracuse. Enclosed trailers offer extra protection but cost about 50% more and may have longer delivery times.
  • Location Accessibility: Syracuse’s proximity to major highways like I-81 and I-90 can make pickup and delivery easier, potentially lowering costs. Rural areas outside the city may incur additional fees.
  • Seasonal Factors: Syracuse’s harsh winters can impact car shipping prices. Icy roads and snow may cause delays or require special equipment, potentially increasing costs during winter months.
  • Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger vehicles or those with low ground clearance may cost more to ship. Non-running cars require special equipment, increasing the price for auto transport services.
  • Timing and Flexibility: Booking in advance and offering flexible pickup dates can often result in lower car shipping rates to or from Syracuse.
  • Market Demand: Syracuse’s academic calendar, with universities like Syracuse University, can affect demand for car transport services, potentially impacting prices during student move-in and move-out periods.

Understanding these factors can help you better estimate the cost of shipping a car to or from Syracuse, NY. For more detailed information on pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Syracuse car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates, especially for standard vehicles.
  • Select convenient locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and drop-off points near major interstates like I-81 or I-90. This can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your overall auto transport price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your car shipping service. Carriers may offer discounts for filling spots on existing routes.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to and from Syracuse can be affected by weather. Summer months often see increased demand, while winter weather may impact schedules. Plan accordingly to potentially save on your car shipping costs.

New York’s vehicle inspection laws require annual safety inspections, so ensure your car is up-to-date before shipping. When registering your vehicle in New York, you’ll need proof of ownership, insurance, and identification. Syracuse’s snowy winters make all-season or winter tires a must-have for safe driving.

Syracuse, New York Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Syracuse?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Syracuse. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Syracuse?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Syracuse?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Syracuse?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Syracuse

When scheduling car shipping to or from Syracuse, NY, it’s crucial to consider the city’s distinct seasonal weather patterns. Syracuse experiences harsh winters with heavy snowfall, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.

During winter months (November to March), keep these tips in mind for Syracuse car shipping:

  • Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them installed.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, avoiding steep inclines that may be icy.
  • Remove any items from your vehicle that could freeze and potentially damage the interior.

Summer car transport in Syracuse (June to August) requires different considerations:

  • Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior from heat damage.
  • Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt during transport.

Beyond weather, timing is crucial when shipping a car to Syracuse. As a college town, the busiest periods for auto transport services align with the academic calendar. To avoid delays and potentially higher costs, consider scheduling your car shipping a few weeks before or after the start and end of semesters.

Additionally, Syracuse sees increased car transport activity during the ‘snowbird’ season. Many residents temporarily relocate to warmer climates during winter, causing a spike in demand for car shipping services. Planning your auto transport outside these peak times can lead to more flexible scheduling and potentially lower rates.

By considering these seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient experience when using a car shipping company for your Syracuse, NY auto transport needs.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Syracuse, New York

When considering car shipping to Syracuse, New York for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at local universities. Before shipping your car, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. If you’re unsure about auto transport to Syracuse, consider using a reliable car shipping company to ensure your vehicle arrives safely. Planning ahead for these factors will make your transition to college life in Syracuse much smoother.

“It was such a struggle for me to figure out which transport company to choose. I did so much research, read so many horror stories and I couldn`t bear the thought of being amongst the many disappointed persons who felt blindsided by original quotes or by unfulfilled promises from many other transport companies that look for your business. So what I decided on doing was going with my gut and trusting the search I did on the Top 10 best auto transport companies out there…and I went with #1 SHERPA TRANSPORT. I can`t express enough how well informed they were with me..their eagerness to reassure me and their following through with my expectations. My vehicle arrived intact…I was blessed that Sherpa Auto contracted a wonderful carrier…the driver contacted me and arrived on a timely manner and very professional. So all you nervous wrecks out there who question what to do…take it from me ..my satisfaction was 1000% positive!! Thanks Sherpa for your diligence and honesty. By the way, in case you`re wondering I transported a 2014 Ford Focus SE with only 29,000 miles from New York to Pheonix Arizona. My son`s first car while he`s training to become a commercial airline pilot!!”

“This past Labor Day weekend, my wife and I used Sherpa and one of their contract carriers, Morganite Auto Transport, to ship a car from our home in the Tampa area to our son in upstate New York. We decided to go with Sherpa only after doing a considerable amount of research on auto transport brokers available in our area. And we’re so glad we chose Sherpa – it was an excellent choice! The whole process, from our initial contact with Sherpa through delivery of the car by Morganite, went off without the slightest hitch. In fact, the car was able to be picked up sooner and delivered earlier than we had expected when we began planning to ship the car. The price quoted by Sherpa at the outset was reasonable, complete, and guaranteed – we were able to pay the entire cost upfront, and there were no additional charges at the time of delivery. At each step of the way, both Sherpa and Morganite were thoroughly professional, efficient, helpful, and friendly. We’d be happy to recommend them to anyone in need of car transport services! Thank you, Sherpa and Morganite!”

“Setting up the transport was very good. I received quick responses and Sherpa’s reps promised they`d have the transport initially set up. They emailed me throughout the process. So, I was very happy with everything. I was given a couple of meeting place options for the pickup and the driver was there at exactly the time he stated he would be there. So, it was very well put together. We took pictures beforehand and so did the driver. He filled out a bill of lading and I sent a copy of that to my son. The car was delivered right in front of my son’s house and it arrived in the same condition that it departed New York. If people need to transport a vehicle long distance, Sherpa is a very reliable company to deal with. They quoted me a price and that was exactly what I paid. They had stated that if, for some reason, there was a bump in the price, they would cover a $300 additional fee. But that was never an issue.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“This was my first experience shipping a vehicle, but because the distance was so great (from Colorado to New York) I decided it would be much more cost effective this way. After doing some research, I went with Sherpa based largely on the customer satisfaction in the reviews. They weren`t the least expensive shipper but I wasn`t willing to take any chances with my investment vehicle. I`m glad I did. I spoke with Crimson from Sherpa (who is a real sweetheart) and she helped to set everything up. After that I was assigned a driver. The communication between myself and the driver was excellent, the shipping time was excellent (Friday afternoon to Monday morning) and my truck arrived in the same condition it left in. Money well spent! I will absolutely use Sherpa again when I`m in need of their services and I highly recommend them to anyone else who has shipping needs.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The person that I spoke with who helped set up our original estimate from Sherpa explained the whole process. He explained what was going on, that people put up the deliveries on an open board, and then the independent drivers bid on those and arrange to make the delivery. Understanding that helped me along with the whole process. The car was transported within the timeframe that we expected. The car was picked up from my parents` house in Upstate New York and it got very quickly to its destination in Central Illinois within one day. We were really pleased. Also, at first, I thought the price was a little bit on the higher side but there were no adjustments or unexpected changes to that. We got what we paid for and the car was delivered undamaged. I would not hesitate to use Sherpa again if needed and would recommend them to others.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Syracuse, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New York. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]

  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
