Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our New York City customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“In addition my car arrived across the country almost 5 days EARLIER than expected! I would wholeheartedly recommend sherpa auto to anybody that is planning on shipping their car. Moving can be very stressful time but it was nice not to have to worry about my car shipment. They also threw in a free car wash when I receive my car which I thought was excellent customer service. If I had to use Sherpa auto again I definitely would. They are a very good and honest company to work with. They are easy to get a hold of and able to answer all questions as well as coming through on their promises to ship your car in a timely manner from New York City to Seattle.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“It ended up being nothing at all. So, I waited on 55th Street. Second Avenue goes from one end of Manhattan all the way down to the other end. It goes from north to south. And he said, “I’ll meet you at 54th in a second. I’ll have my transport there.” I drove over there. And there he was with the transport. He got out. And we looked at the car. We had a chit-chat about it. And he said, “All right. See you later.” He got in the car. Drove it on the transport. I turned around, took a picture of it and left. The driver was a sweetheart. He picked the car up on a Friday in New York City.”

“It was such a struggle for me to figure out which transport company to choose. I did so much research, read so many horror stories and I couldn’t bear the thought of being amongst the many disappointed persons who felt blindsided by original quotes or by unfulfilled promises from many other transport companies that look for your business. So what I decided on doing was going with my gut and trusting the search I did on the Top 10 best auto transport companies out there…and I went with #1 SHERPA TRANSPORT. I can’t express enough how well informed they were with me..their eagerness to reassure me and their following through with my expectations. My vehicle arrived intact from New York to Pheonix Arizona.”

Factors that affect New York City Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from New York City. Longer distances typically result in higher prices, but the per-mile rate often decreases for longer trips.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, occupy more space on the carrier and weigh more, leading to higher shipping costs compared to compact cars or sedans.
  • Transport Type: Open transport is the most common and affordable option for shipping cars to or from New York City. Enclosed transport, while pricier, offers extra protection from weather and road debris, ideal for luxury or classic cars.
  • Season: Auto transport prices in New York City can fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months and January tend to see higher rates due to increased demand, while spring and fall may offer more competitive pricing.
  • Route: New York City’s dense urban environment and busy highways like I-95, I-78, and I-278 can affect shipping costs. Easily accessible pickup and drop-off locations near major routes may result in lower prices.
  • Timeframe: Flexible shipping dates often lead to better rates. Rush or guaranteed delivery services to or from New York City will typically cost more.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. Non-running cars require special equipment for loading and unloading, increasing the overall cost.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from New York City. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your New York City car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost savings.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-95 or I-87. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues. Car shipping companies aren’t responsible for items left in the vehicle.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates to increase your options. Consider locations just outside the city, like nearby New Jersey or Long Island, for potentially lower rates.
  • Avoid peak seasons: If possible, schedule your car transport outside of busy periods like summer or holidays when demand and prices are higher in New York City.
  • Consider terminal-to-door: While Sherpa specializes in door-to-door service, discuss with our advisors if a terminal pickup near major highways could lower your costs for shipping to or from NYC.

How does New York City Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process in New York City, NY requires careful planning and consideration of the unique urban environment. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you smoothly ship your car to or from the Big Apple:

1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a car shipping quote online from a trusted provider like Sherpa Auto Transport. Be prepared to provide details about your vehicle, desired pickup and delivery locations, and preferred shipping method.

2. Lock in Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, secure your booking. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa.

3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Clean your car thoroughly and document any existing damage. Remove personal items and valuable accessories. In NYC, where salt is used on roads during winter, give extra attention to cleaning the undercarriage.

4. Meet the Carrier: Sherpa offers door-to-door service, but be aware that NYC’s narrow streets may require meeting the carrier at a nearby location. Coordinate a safe, legal spot for the pickup.

5. Wait for Delivery: While your car is in transit, stay informed with Sherpa’s frequent updates. Keep in mind that NYC traffic can sometimes affect delivery times.

6. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon arrival, inspect your car and complete the necessary paperwork. Pay any remaining balance to the carrier.

When shipping a car to or from NYC, consider the city’s unique challenges. Heavy traffic, especially on major routes like I-95 and I-278, can impact transport times. Seasonal factors, such as snow in winter or increased tourist traffic in summer, may also affect schedules. By choosing a reliable car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport, you can ensure a smooth auto transport experience in the bustling metropolis of New York City.

New York City Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping your car to or from New York City, NY, it’s crucial to be aware of local regulations and prepare for your move. For car transport to New York City, consider removing your E-ZPass transponder to avoid accidental toll charges during shipping. New York uses E-ZPass for electronic toll collection on bridges, tunnels, and highways.

Upon arrival, you’ll need to register your vehicle with the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within 30 days. This process includes obtaining New York auto insurance, passing a vehicle inspection, and paying registration fees. New York City has strict parking regulations, so research parking permits for your neighborhood through the NYC Department of Transportation website.

When moving to NYC, set up utilities early. Major providers include Con Edison for electricity and National Grid for natural gas. For internet, options include Spectrum, Verizon Fios, and RCN. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in the NYC Department of Education system.

If you’re moving away from New York City, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail through USPS, and return any city-issued parking permits. Inform E-ZPass of your move to avoid future charges.

When arranging car shipping services to or from New York City, consider the city’s climate. Harsh winters can affect transport schedules, so plan accordingly. Major highways serving NYC include I-95, I-78, and I-278, which your auto transport company will likely use.

Whether you’re shipping a car to the Big Apple or moving out, proper planning ensures a smooth transition. By understanding local requirements and preparing in advance, you’ll make your move to or from New York City as seamless as possible.

New York City, New York Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from New York City?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from New York City. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from New York City?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from New York City?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to New York City?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in New York City

When scheduling car shipping services to or from New York City, NY, it’s crucial to consider the seasonal weather patterns that can impact your auto transport experience. The Big Apple experiences all four seasons distinctly, each bringing its own set of challenges for car shipping companies.

In winter, New York City car shipping can be affected by snow and ice. When shipping a car during this time:

  • Remove snow tires or chains before transport
  • Ensure pickup/drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping
  • Avoid leaving items that may freeze in the vehicle

Summer in NYC can bring intense heat. When you ship a car during warmer months:

  • Place a sunshade in the windshield to protect the interior
  • Remove heat-sensitive items from the vehicle
  • Consider scheduling early morning or evening pickups to avoid peak heat

Beyond weather, New York City, NY has specific peak times for car transport. The city’s numerous universities cause increased demand for auto transport services at the beginning and end of academic terms. To avoid potential delays or higher costs, consider scheduling your car shipping a few weeks before or after these busy periods.

Additionally, many New Yorkers participate in the annual ‘snowbird’ migration, heading to warmer climates during winter. This creates a surge in car shipping demand, typically from late fall to early spring. Planning your auto transport outside these peak times can lead to more flexible scheduling and potentially lower rates.

By considering these seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient car shipping experience to or from the vibrant heart of New York City.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in New York City, New York

When considering car shipping to New York City for college, it’s crucial to understand parking logistics. Most universities in NYC have limited on-campus parking, often requiring permits or passes. For example, Columbia University offers parking to eligible students, but spaces are limited and costly. NYU doesn’t provide on-campus parking, so students must rely on public garages or street parking. Before using auto transport services, research your specific school’s policies. Many students opt to ship their car only for certain semesters, avoiding winter months when snow tires might be necessary. When planning to transport your car, consider long-term storage options during breaks. Some car shipping companies offer temporary storage solutions. Don’t forget to update your insurance and roadside assistance coverage for your new location. Lastly, weigh the pros and cons of having a car in NYC – with its extensive public transportation, you might find shipping a car unnecessary.

“My boss had to transport his old Porsche from his Dad`s house in San Francisco to his Connecticut home. So, I Googled “Best shipping companies for cars” and I came across three. There was a company that was like $400 more than the cheapest and $200 more than the most expensive. I called but I didn’t follow up with them because I didn’t like that they had a five-day pick-up window because people are busy. I chose Sherpa because I liked my conversations with them and I liked the name. Sherpas are guides up in the mountains and they guide the mountain climbers up Everest and Mount Kailash in Tibet. Also, they came in line with the other three companies for the price. Crimson, the person I spoke to, was very informative. She gave me some good feedback and gave me a lot of information because being in New York City, I really don’t drive every day. Also, they were able to get KWIK. It was the shipping company they used and I got a rave review from the person who had the car in San Francisco who told me the driver was really nice, helpful, and courteous. They picked up the car on September 25th in San Francisco and they got it to Connecticut by October 2nd. The 25th was the best day in September for the person in San Francisco so, that worked out perfectly. They gave two dates for arrival and luckily for us, it came at the right time because if it came the next day, we would have been out of town and we would have had to put it in storage. My boss would have to be home to accept it because his wife was gonna be out of town. So, their customer service was great and talking to them was a pleasure. The car didn`t come damaged. They would have taken care if anything happened to the car but why put yourself in a situation where you have to do all that. I was happy because I told my boss we should go with them. I`m kind of new to working for him, so I wanted things to go smoothly. If they had done a lousy job, I would have been upset. But I was truly satisfied and everything worked out fine.”

“I needed to get a vehicle up to New York City which was about 650 miles from North Carolina. It`s a Volkswagen Passat. It is five years old and only has about 18,000 miles on it. My daughter got it as her graduation gift when she graduated from college. The car sat in a garage because she could walk to work faster than driving her car. When she went to New York, we transported the car from Century City and it was out of my driveway for the next three and a half years. Then with COVID-19, she needed a car because she was afraid to rent a car or go in an Uber. So rather than me driving the car up there and then having to get home, I decided to use common carrier because if you`d go in from North Carolina into New York, you`d have to be confined for 14 days before you could leave. The experience with Sherpa Auto Transport was seamless and the price was fair. I picked the transport company based on their D&B. It was a local transport firm in Charlotte. We live on close to a waterway, south of the Cape Fear River, which is Wilmington, North Carolina and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The requirements were established with the logistical company that we called and we wanted it in an enclosed van and we wanted it to be a direct route. We got the car picked up at our residence and it was delivered to our daughter in New York City with 48 hours. They did a thorough inspection before they loaded the vehicle and my daughter did a thorough inspection with the same driver when he dropped the vehicle off. There were only three cars in that van and hers was the last one loaded and the last one delivered. So when they loaded her car at my house, they had to back out the other two because the carrier was located in Connecticut and my daughter was the closest to them. So it was the last one dropped off.”

“When you`re researching car transport companies, there are more bad reviews than good. Before choosing a transport company I researched, ConsumerAffairs, the BBB, and various other sites, as no one except a customer can accurately rate any organization. I had my vehicle transported from VA to NYC. I had various requirements, specifically time frame and the hours the car could be retrieved for transport. From my initial phone call with Phil, until my car was delivered was smoother than I ever expected; particularly with the horror stories I had read I was apprehensive to say the least. I would recommend Sherpa Auto Transport to anyone in need of transporting their vehicle. They are professional, If they don`t get to the phone, they return your call quickly, and most importantly transport your car on time and make the process as smooth as possible!”

“I rarely give reviews, but I can`t wait to give Sherpa the rating it deserves on all platform. After weeks of research and decided to place trust on Sherpa to ship my car from NY to CA, they did not fail me. Sherpa really puts convenience and peace of mind over everything. My car arrives cross country in less than a week in perfect condition, and that`s not to mention the student discount and free car wash I am about to get from them. Sure, the price is definitely steep and not as enticing as other shipping companies out there, but it is locked and guaranteed, so you don`t have to worry about the hassle of the bidding business of the car shipping industry. I only had 4 phone calls since I signed up to get my car cross country a week later: one with Sherpa for a confirmation of a carrier, one with the carrier, and two with the carriers when delivery. My family and I placed a goal of having my car in CA by July 1st. Sherpa shattered that goal by twelve days. We were still amazed. If there`s only one suggestion I`d give Sherpa is that they would ask the carrier they partner with to be more communicative with the customer. Although Sherpa said they would give us a call 12-24 hours prior to pick up, they arrived to our pick up spot in NY unprompted. Had we not been home, the truck might had have to return another day. Luckily, the situation improves once I gave the carrier a call about this and they called me a day before delivery. The customer service, peace of mind and extremely quick delivery outweighs that cons though. Thanks, Sherpa.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in New York City, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New York. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]

Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company

When choosing a car shipping company in the Big Apple, look for providers with a solid track record and positive customer reviews. Ensure they offer adequate insurance coverage and are registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). A reputable auto transport service should provide clear pricing, excellent customer support, and a range of shipping options. Be wary of companies that demand large upfront deposits or have numerous complaints. Remember, in a city that never sleeps, reliability is key.
