Note: These figures are based on Sherpa’s actual data from the past 12 months of vehicle shipments to or from New York City, NY. When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect New York City Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from New York City. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, as fuel and labor costs increase.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport in New York City. Enclosed trailers, while offering extra protection, are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
- Location Accessibility: New York City’s dense urban environment can affect pricing. Pickups and deliveries in easily accessible areas near major highways like I-95 or I-278 are typically cheaper than those in congested city centers.
- Seasonal Factors: New York City’s weather can impact car shipping prices. Winter months may see higher rates due to challenging road conditions, while summer often brings peak demand and increased prices.
- Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, common in NYC’s diverse car culture, may cost more to ship due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
- Timeframe: Flexible pickup windows often result in lower car shipping costs. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates for auto transport to or from New York City typically come at a premium.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to ship. Inoperable cars require special equipment for loading, increasing the cost of car transport services.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from New York City. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your car shipment at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from New York City, NY.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
- Consider location: Work with Sherpa advisors to find pickup/dropoff locations near major interstates like I-95, I-78, or I-287. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates to increase your options. Consider locations slightly outside New York City, such as Newark or Jersey City, for potentially lower rates.
- Prepare your vehicle: Ensure your car is in good working condition and clean before shipping. This can expedite the inspection process and prevent any last-minute issues that could delay transport.

New York City Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When relocating to or from New York City, NY, there are several important factors to consider regarding car shipping and local regulations. For those using auto transport services, it’s crucial to remove E-ZPass transponders before shipping to avoid unnecessary toll charges. New York City has strict parking regulations, so research neighborhood-specific parking permits upon arrival. Vehicle registration in New York State requires proof of ownership, identification, and insurance. New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency.
New York City enforces emissions inspections annually, so ensure your vehicle meets these standards when shipping a car to the area. The city’s climate can be harsh on vehicles, with hot summers and snowy winters. Consider this when preparing your car for auto transport and upon arrival.
When moving to NYC, set up utilities early. Major providers include Con Edison for electricity and National Grid for gas. For internet, options include Spectrum, Verizon Fios, and RCN. To ease your transition, register to vote at your local Board of Elections office and obtain a New York Public Library card for access to numerous resources.
If leaving NYC, remember to cancel local memberships, forward mail via USPS, and notify your bank and other important contacts of your address change. When using car shipping services to leave the city, consider the timing to avoid peak traffic periods on major routes like I-95, I-78, and I-87.
Whether you’re moving to or from the Big Apple, reliable car transport is essential. Choose a reputable car shipping company familiar with NYC’s unique challenges, including navigating narrow streets and adhering to specific parking and unloading regulations. By planning ahead and leveraging professional auto transport expertise, you can ensure a smooth transition for both you and your vehicle in the bustling metropolis of New York City.
New York City, New York Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from New York City?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from New York City. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from New York City?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from New York City?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to New York City?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in New York City
When planning car shipping to or from New York City, NY, it’s crucial to consider the city’s diverse seasonal weather. New York experiences all four seasons distinctly, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, snow and ice can complicate car shipping services. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport
- Ensure pickup/drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping
- Remove any items that might freeze and expand
During summer, high temperatures can affect your vehicle. When you ship a car in warmer months:
- Place a sunshade under the windshield
- Remove heat-sensitive items from the car
- Consider shipping during cooler morning or evening hours
Spring and fall offer milder conditions but can bring rain. Ensure your car transport company is prepared for wet conditions.
Beyond weather, consider peak times for New York City car shipping:
- August-September and May-June: College students moving
- November and April: Snowbirds relocating
- Summer months: Increased tourism and relocations
To avoid higher rates and potential delays, consider scheduling your auto transport a few weeks before or after these peak periods. By planning around seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother experience when using car shipping services in New York City, NY.
Car Shipping for College Students in New York City, New York
When considering car shipping to New York City for college, it’s crucial to understand parking logistics. Many universities in NYC have limited on-campus parking, often requiring permits or passes. For example, Columbia University offers parking to eligible students, but spaces are limited and costly. NYU doesn’t provide on-campus parking, so students must rely on public garages or street parking. Before shipping your car, research your school’s specific parking policies and nearby options. Consider whether your apartment or dorm includes parking, as this can significantly impact your decision to bring a vehicle. For winter breaks, inquire about long-term storage options on or near campus. Remember, NYC’s weather can be harsh, so ensure your car is equipped with appropriate tires and that your insurance, including roadside assistance, is valid in New York. Ultimately, given NYC’s excellent public transportation, many students find it unnecessary to bring a car. Carefully weigh the pros and cons before deciding on auto transport to New York City.
Reviews from our New York Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied New York customers:
“My boss had to transport his old Porsche from his Dad`s house in San Francisco to his Connecticut home. So, I Googled “Best shipping companies for cars” and I came across three. There was a company that was like $400 more than the cheapest and $200 more than the most expensive. I called but I didn’t follow up with them because I didn’t like that they had a five-day pick-up window because people are busy. I chose Sherpa because I liked my conversations with them and I liked the name. Sherpas are guides up in the mountains and they guide the mountain climbers up Everest and Mount Kailash in Tibet. Also, they came in line with the other three companies for the price. Crimson, the person I spoke to, was very informative. She gave me some good feedback and gave me a lot of information because being in New York City, I really don’t drive every day. Also, they were able to get KWIK. It was the shipping company they used and I got a rave review from the person who had the car in San Francisco who told me the driver was really nice, helpful, and courteous. They picked up the car on September 25th in San Francisco and they got it to Connecticut by October 2nd. The 25th was the best day in September for the person in San Francisco so, that worked out perfectly. They gave two dates for arrival and luckily for us, it came at the right time because if it came the next day, we would have been out of town and we would have had to put it in storage. My boss would have to be home to accept it because his wife was gonna be out of town. So, their customer service was great and talking to them was a pleasure. The car didn`t come damaged. They would have taken care if anything happened to the car but why put yourself in a situation where you have to do all that. I was happy because I told my boss we should go with them. I`m kind of new to working for him, so I wanted things to go smoothly. If they had done a lousy job, I would have been upset. But I was truly satisfied and everything worked out fine.”
“I needed to get a vehicle up to New York City which was about 650 miles from North Carolina. It`s a Volkswagen Passat. It is five years old and only has about 18,000 miles on it. My daughter got it as her graduation gift when she graduated from college. The car sat in a garage because she could walk to work faster than driving her car. When she went to New York, we transported the car from Century City and it was out of my driveway for the next three and a half years. Then with COVID-19, she needed a car because she was afraid to rent a car or go in an Uber. So rather than me driving the car up there and then having to get home, I decided to use common carrier because if you`d go in from North Carolina into New York, you`d have to be confined for 14 days before you could leave. The experience with Sherpa Auto Transport was seamless and the price was fair. I picked the transport company based on their D&B. It was a local transport firm in Charlotte. We live on close to a waterway, south of the Cape Fear River, which is Wilmington, North Carolina and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The requirements were established with the logistical company that we called and we wanted it in an enclosed van and we wanted it to be a direct route. We got the car picked up at our residence and it was delivered to our daughter in New York City with 48 hours. They did a thorough inspection before they loaded the vehicle and my daughter did a thorough inspection with the same driver when he dropped the vehicle off. There were only three cars in that van and hers was the last one loaded and the last one delivered. So when they loaded her car at my house, they had to back out the other two because the carrier was located in Connecticut and my daughter was the closest to them. So it was the last one dropped off.”
“I called Sherpa Auto Transport and I got somebody. It was a person who spoke English. That made me happy because I felt we were communicating. And we had a discussion. He told me how it all worked and how much it would cost. We talked about dates. And somehow they got back to me. They set it up. It was very smooth. They told me there would be a driver. Somebody said he would call. I got anxious about the whole thing. Because I`m in the middle of Manhattan. My car is in a garage. I can drive it where they need to. But how would I do it in the middle of Manhattan? The driver called me up and said, “I`ll be there in the blah, blah, minutes”. And I went over to the garage and got the car. And I thought, “What am I going to do? I`m going to have to park it somewhere. And then I`m gonna find a parking space.†It ended up being nothing at all. So, I waited on 55th Street. Second Avenue goes from one end of Manhattan all the way down to the other end. It goes from north to south. And he said, “I`ll meet you at 54th in a second. I`ll have my transport there.” I drove over there. And there he was with the transport. He got out. And we looked at the car. We had a chit-chat about it. And he said, “All right. See you later.” He got in the car. Drove it on the transport. I turned around, took a picture of it and left. The driver was a sweetheart. He picked the car up on a Friday. And it was delivered on a Tuesday. Whoever did it in Texas was a different person than I talked to, who was the ultimate driver. He called her a half an hour. He said he was 10 miles out. But she didn`t answer the phone. So, the driver called me. And I called her. And he called her. She lives in Austin, Texas. She lives more out in the suburbs. And she said, he didn`t want to bring it on her street because there were too many trees. She said, “I just jogged over to the, you know. It wasn`t very far.” She sent me a thing and said, “There`s this little ding here.” I said, “Oh, that`s an old one.” There was nothing. And he gave her the keys. She signed it, she gave him the check, and that was that. It was very smooth. They had their stuff together. The car got there in no time. Sherpa was great. Everybody was professional. I would recommend them.”
“It was such a struggle for me to figure out which transport company to choose. I did so much research, read so many horror stories and I couldn`t bear the thought of being amongst the many disappointed persons who felt blindsided by original quotes or by unfulfilled promises from many other transport companies that look for your business. So what I decided on doing was going with my gut and trusting the search I did on the Top 10 best auto transport companies out there…and I went with #1 SHERPA TRANSPORT. I can`t express enough how well informed they were with me..their eagerness to reassure me and their following through with my expectations. So all you nervous wrecks out there who question what to do…take it from me ..my satisfaction was 1000% positive!! Thanks Sherpa for your diligence and honesty. By the way, in case you`re wondering I transported a 2014 Ford Focus SE with only 29,000 miles from New York to Pheonix Arizona. My son`s first car while he`s training to become a commercial airline pilot!!”
“I bought a car in New York – I`m in Illinois! Yikes! So, I had to get it home. I picked Sherpa because my wife had heard fellow travel nurses who`d used them for transporting their travel trailers. They seemed reasonable and professional. They didn`t fail me! Got my car from New York to Illinois in less than a week! Got a $50 rebate for booking online. Got a $20 car wash reimbursed when it arrived as well. My only critique was the company they found to drive it here. The driver had a less than pleasant personality, was not going to give me any paperwork at the time of delivery until I asked for it. “Oh, you want a bill of laden? I guess I can fill one out for you.” Other than that, a seamless experience!”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in New York City, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New York. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

- Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
- The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
- Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
- Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
Benefits of Using a Car Transport Company
Opting for car shipping services to or from the Big Apple offers numerous advantages. Auto transport provides unparalleled convenience, saving you the hassle of navigating NYC’s notoriously congested streets. Professional car transport companies possess the expertise to handle your vehicle with care, ensuring its safe arrival amidst the hustle and bustle of New York City. By choosing to ship a car, you avoid the stress of long-distance driving and potential parking nightmares in the city that never sleeps. Moreover, most car shipping companies offer insurance coverage, providing peace of mind as your vehicle makes its journey to or from the heart of Manhattan. It’s a cost-effective and efficient solution for transporting your car in the concrete jungle.
Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company
When choosing a car shipping company in the bustling Big Apple, look for providers with a solid track record and positive customer reviews. Ensure they offer adequate insurance coverage and are registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). A reputable New York City car shipping service should provide clear pricing, excellent customer support, and a range of transport options. Be wary of companies that demand large upfront deposits or lack transparency in their processes. By considering these factors, you’ll find a reliable auto transport partner to navigate your vehicle through the concrete jungle and beyond, ensuring a smooth journey from the Hudson to your destination.
