What our Ithaca customers say about Sherpa:
“My car was picked up and dropped off by the same individual, who took meticulous care to inspect it for all prior damage before departure. He was friendly and a consistent communicator. He kept me apprised of when my car would arrive and the time window of the day in which to expect it. Car arrived in great condition. I would recommend Sherpa.”
“In a very professional and friendly call the process of shipping a car and Sherpa’s role was explained to me. Very easy to follow and understand. I decided to hire Sherpa and filled out the necessary paperwork. As the pickup date approached I was contacted by Sherpa with confirmation that they booked a driver. The driver was very friendly and the entire process was smooth sailing. The pickup and drop off process was quick and without incident. Without question if I ever have the need to ship a car in the future, my choice will be Sherpa.”
“After doing some research, I went with Sherpa based largely on the customer satisfaction in the reviews. I spoke with Crimson from Sherpa (who is a real sweetheart) and she helped to set everything up. The communication between myself and the driver was excellent, the shipping time was excellent (Friday afternoon to Monday morning) and my truck arrived in the same condition it left in. Money well spent!”

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Ithaca Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Ithaca, NY. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, as fuel consumption and driver time increase.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Ithaca. Enclosed trailers, while offering more protection, are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times. They’re typically only necessary for high-value or classic cars.
- Vehicle Size: Larger, heavier vehicles like SUVs or trucks cost more to ship to Ithaca than smaller cars due to the space they occupy and their weight.
- Seasonal Factors: Ithaca’s harsh winters can affect car shipping prices. Snowy conditions on routes like I-81 or NY-79 may lead to higher costs during winter months. Summer, being peak season for auto transport, can also see increased prices.
- Pickup and Delivery Locations: Ithaca’s somewhat remote location in upstate New York can influence costs. Shipping to more accessible areas near major highways like I-81 might be cheaper than direct delivery to Ithaca.
- Timing Flexibility: If you can offer a flexible pickup window, you may secure better rates for car shipping to Ithaca. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates typically cost more.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship to Ithaca than inoperable ones, which require special equipment for loading and unloading.
Understanding these factors can help you estimate your car shipping costs to or from Ithaca more accurately. For a detailed breakdown of pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Ithaca?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Ithaca
When planning car shipping to or from Ithaca, NY, it’s crucial to consider the region’s seasonal weather patterns. Ithaca experiences distinct seasons, each with unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, Ithaca often sees heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport
- Ensure pickup/drop-off locations are on level ground to avoid slipping
- Remove or protect items that could freeze and expand
During summer, while not extreme, temperatures can rise. For car transport in warmer months:
- Consider using a sunshade to protect your car’s interior
- Remove heat-sensitive items from the vehicle
Beyond weather, timing is crucial for efficient car shipping in Ithaca. As a college town, home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, peak auto transport times align with the academic calendar:
- Late August/early September: Fall semester start
- Mid-December: Winter break
- Mid-January: Spring semester start
- May: End of academic year
To avoid delays and potentially higher costs, consider scheduling your car shipping a few weeks before or after these peak periods. By planning ahead and considering these factors, you can ensure a smooth auto transport experience in Ithaca, NY.
Car Shipping for College Students in Ithaca, New York
When considering car shipping to Ithaca, New York, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at local universities. Cornell University and Ithaca College both require parking permits for on-campus parking. Students should register their vehicles and obtain passes before arrival. Most off-campus apartments offer parking, but it’s wise to confirm this beforehand. For winter breaks, both universities provide long-term parking options, allowing students to safely store their vehicles. However, given Ithaca’s harsh winters, investing in snow tires is highly recommended for those keeping their cars year-round. Students should also verify that their auto insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to their new location. If you’re unsure about navigating these logistics, consider using a reliable car transport service to ship your car to Ithaca. This can simplify the process and ensure your vehicle arrives safely, especially if you’re unfamiliar with driving in winter conditions.
Reviews from our New York Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied New York customers:
“I called Sherpa Auto Transport and I got somebody. It was a person who spoke English. That made me happy because I felt we were communicating. And we had a discussion. He told me how it all worked and how much it would cost. We talked about dates. And somehow they got back to me. They set it up. It was very smooth. They told me there would be a driver. Somebody said he would call. I got anxious about the whole thing. Because I`m in the middle of Manhattan. My car is in a garage. I can drive it where they need to. But how would I do it in the middle of Manhattan? The driver called me up and said, “I`ll be there in the blah, blah, minutes”. And I went over to the garage and got the car. And I thought, “What am I going to do? I`m going to have to park it somewhere. And then I`m gonna find a parking space.’ It ended up being nothing at all. So, I waited on 55th Street. Second Avenue goes from one end of Manhattan all the way down to the other end. It goes from north to south. And he said, “I`ll meet you at 54th in a second. I`ll have my transport there.” I drove over there. And there he was with the transport. He got out. And we looked at the car. We had a chit-chat about it. And he said, “All right. See you later.” He got in the car. Drove it on the transport. I turned around, took a picture of it and left. The driver was a sweetheart. He picked the car up on a Friday. And it was delivered on a Tuesday. Whoever did it in Texas was a different person than I talked to, who was the ultimate driver. He called her a half an hour. He said he was 10 miles out. But she didn`t answer the phone. So, the driver called me. And I called her. And he called her. She lives in Austin, Texas. She lives more out in the suburbs. And she said, he didn`t want to bring it on her street because there were too many trees. She said, “I just jogged over to the, you know. It wasn`t very far.” She sent me a thing and said, “There`s this little ding here.” I said, “Oh, that`s an old one.” There was nothing. And he gave her the keys. She signed it, she gave him the check, and that was that. It was very smooth. They had their stuff together. The car got there in no time. Sherpa was great. Everybody was professional. I would recommend them.”
“Sherpa has a provision where if they cannot get your vehicle picked up for the amount of money that they quoted you, they are going to pay up to a certain amount more without charging you that. I used the service one time, and it was totally trouble-free. I used it the second time, and it was perfect. I`ve used these people now three times and they`re good. They know the product. They explain to you. Everything is also electronic. You are receiving some of the forms electronically, and you sign via email. Then you get a couple of text messages. If I have to move my car back to New York, I would call them. Twice, I was unable to be personally available to pick up the vehicle. I had to give them a different address to deliver the vehicle which was my friend`s house. They worked very well with me. It was also interesting that I got from them an email with a coupon saying in case my vehicle had any dust or dirt from the transportation, I can use the coupon for a free wash for my car.”
“A human answered the phone when I called Sherpa and they were nice to me. They were easy to talk to and communicate with. Some of the other companies were making some promises that couldn`t necessarily be kept. But Sherpa was the kind who would say those things, but they`re not going to make that promise unless they can actually do it. I set the transport up for mother-in-law and although everything was totally smooth and everything got delivered faster than expected, in perfect condition and was totally satisfied, the drivers who showed up didn`t speak any English at all. So, there was a little bit of a communication barrier there, but they worked through it. The cost was exactly what I expected. It was all completely transparent.”
“These guys at Sherpa will take care of you. Every time I called a competitor, I would be placed on hold for several minutes before being out through to some call center in India. NOT AT SHERPA! When I call Sherpa, they answer right away AND they all speak English. The guy I was talking to was from Long Island and knew exactly where my car was. Did I mention they are very competitive with their pricing? They matched a competitor`s quote and made the deal happen. What more can you ask for? Give these guys your business. You know the $ is going to a hardworking American citizens. USA BABY!”
“It was such a struggle for me to figure out which transport company to choose. I did so much research, read so many horror stories and I couldn`t bear the thought of being amongst the many disappointed persons who felt blindsided by original quotes or by unfulfilled promises from many other transport companies that look for your business. So what I decided on doing was going with my gut and trusting the search I did on the Top 10 best auto transport companies out there…and I went with #1 SHERPA TRANSPORT. I can`t express enough how well informed they were with me..their eagerness to reassure me and their following through with my expectations. My vehicle arrived intact…I was blessed that Sherpa Auto contracted a wonderful carrier…the driver contacted me and arrived on a timely manner and very professional. So all you nervous wrecks out there who question what to do…take it from me ..my satisfaction was 1000% positive!! Thanks Sherpa for your diligence and honesty. By the way, in case you`re wondering I transported a 2014 Ford Focus SE with only 29,000 miles from New York to Pheonix Arizona. My son`s first car while he`s training to become a commercial airline pilot!!”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Ithaca, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New York. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
Fun Facts About Car Shipping

- Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
- The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
- Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
- Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
