- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our New York customers say about Sherpa:
“It ended up being nothing at all. So, I waited on 55th Street. Second Avenue goes from one end of Manhattan all the way down to the other end. It goes from north to south. And he said, “I’ll meet you at 54th in a second. I’ll have my transport there.” I drove over there. And there he was with the transport. He got out. And we looked at the car. We had a chit-chat about it. And he said, “All right. See you later.” He got in the car. Drove it on the transport. I turned around, took a picture of it and left. The driver was a sweetheart. He picked the car up on a Friday. And it was delivered on a Tuesday. Whoever did it in New York was a different person than I talked to, who was the ultimate driver.”
“In a very professional and friendly call the process of shipping a car and Sherpa’s role was explained to me. Very easy to follow and understand. I decided to hire Sherpa and filled out the necessary paperwork. I should mention that this came with a high level of anxiety. I’m rolling the dice on shipping a car with a lot of unknowns. I had flexibility in the pickup and delivery and scheduling was set up accordingly. As the pickup date approached I was contacted by Sherpa with confirmation that they booked a driver. I was told the driver would contact me and we’d arrange the pickup. There were a few hiccups with the communication with the driver and this is where I really appreciated the choice I made with Sherpa. They helped sort out the issues in a very timely, professional, manner and were willing to go so far as to book another driver if my confidence in the shipper they selected was low. I relied on their past positive experience with the shipper and decided to stick with them. I’m glad I did. The driver was very friendly and the entire process was smooth sailing. The pickup and drop off process was quick and without incident. Without question if I ever have the need to ship a car in the future, my choice will be Sherpa. I’m adding 2 pictures showing my daughter’s blue Ford loaded in NY and arriving in CO.”
“It was such a struggle for me to figure out which transport company to choose. I did so much research, read so many horror stories and I couldn’t bear the thought of being amongst the many disappointed persons who felt blindsided by original quotes or by unfulfilled promises from many other transport companies that look for your business. So what I decided on doing was going with my gut and trusting the search I did on the Top 10 best auto transport companies out there…and I went with #1 SHERPA TRANSPORT. I can’t express enough how well informed they were with me..their eagerness to reassure me and their following through with my expectations. My vehicle arrived intact…I was blessed that Sherpa Auto contracted a wonderful carrier…the driver contacted me and arrived on a timely manner and very professional. So all you nervous wrecks out there who question what to do…take it from me ..my satisfaction was 1000% positive!! Thanks Sherpa for your diligence and honesty. By the way, in case you’re wondering I transported a 2014 Ford Focus SE with only 29,000 miles from New York to Pheonix Arizona. My son’s first car while he’s training to become a commercial airline pilot!!”

Factors that affect New York Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: New York’s location affects car shipping costs. Transporting to/from NYC is often cheaper than upstate locations due to better route accessibility. Long-distance shipments, like cross-country moves, typically cost more.
- Trailer Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to New York. Enclosed transport, while about 50% pricier, offers protection from harsh New York winters and road debris for luxury or classic cars.
- Pickup and Drop-off Locations: Urban areas like NYC, Buffalo, or Albany are usually cheaper for car shipping than rural upstate locations. Consider meeting the carrier in a larger city to potentially reduce costs.
- Seasonality: New York’s weather impacts car shipping prices. Winter months can increase costs due to challenging road conditions, while summer sees higher demand, potentially raising prices.
- Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger vehicles or those with low ground clearance (common in NYC) may cost more to ship. Inoperable vehicles also increase costs due to special handling requirements.
- Route: Major interstates like I-87, I-90, and I-95 make New York easily accessible, potentially lowering shipping costs to many areas.
- Timing: Flexible pickup windows can reduce costs. Rush services for quick New York relocations will increase prices.
Understanding these factors can help you navigate the car shipping process in New York more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your New York car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles along major interstates like I-87 or I-95.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates when transporting your vehicle to or from New York. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some cars, open shipping provides greater flexibility for negotiating prices.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways such as I-90 or I-81. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your overall car shipping price.
- Lighten your load: Remove personal items from your vehicle before shipping. This reduces weight and ensures compliance with auto transport regulations.
- Stay flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates when arranging your New York car transport. This flexibility allows carriers to optimize their schedules and potentially offer you better rates for your auto shipping needs.
- Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons in New York, such as summer months or college move-in periods. Scheduling your car shipping during off-peak times may result in more competitive pricing for your auto transport.

How does New York Car Shipping Work?
Navigating the car shipping process to or from New York can be as complex as maneuvering through Manhattan traffic. However, with the right guidance, it can be as smooth as cruising along the scenic Taconic State Parkway. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you ship your vehicle to or from the Empire State:
1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free instant quote from a reputable car shipping company. This will give you a clear idea of the costs involved in transporting your vehicle to or from New York.
2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, New York’s weather can be unpredictable, so consider enclosed transport for added protection, especially during harsh winters.
3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the pickup date, thoroughly clean and inspect your car. Prepare your vehicle for shipping by removing personal items and ensuring it’s in good working condition. If you’re shipping during winter, consider a winter-ready service check.
4. Meet the Carrier: On pickup day, meet the carrier at the agreed location. In New York City, this might be in a less congested area to facilitate easy loading.
5. Track Your Shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its journey. It might travel along major routes like I-87 or I-95, depending on its destination.
6. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon arrival, inspect your car thoroughly before signing off. Pay any remaining balance and enjoy your vehicle in its new location, whether it’s the bustling streets of NYC or the serene Adirondacks.
Remember, New York’s diverse landscape, from urban jungles to mountainous terrains, can impact shipping times and methods. Always choose a reliable car transport company familiar with New York’s unique challenges to ensure a smooth auto transport experience.
New York Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to or from New York, it’s crucial to be aware of local vehicle requirements and regulations. One important consideration is the E-ZPass, New York’s electronic toll collection system. If you’re transporting your car out of state, remember to remove your E-ZPass to avoid unexpected charges. For those moving to New York, you’ll want to obtain an E-ZPass for convenient travel on the state’s numerous toll roads.
New York has strict vehicle inspection laws. Within 30 days of registering your car, you must have it inspected at a DMV-licensed inspection station. This annual inspection ensures your vehicle meets safety and emissions standards. When car shipping to New York, factor in this requirement to your post-move checklist.
The vehicle registration process in New York involves visiting a DMV office with proof of ownership, identification, and insurance. You’ll also need to complete a registration application and pay the required fees. If you’re using a car transport service to move your vehicle to New York, ensure you have all necessary documents ready upon arrival.
For those moving to New York City, be aware of parking regulations. Many areas require residential parking permits, which you can apply for online through the NYC Department of Transportation website. When shipping your car to the city, research parking options in your new neighborhood beforehand.
Beyond auto transport considerations, there are several other moving tasks to handle. Set up utilities through providers like Con Edison (electricity) or National Grid (gas). For internet, major providers include Spectrum and Verizon. Don’t forget to register to vote, enroll children in school, and obtain a library card. If moving away, cancel local memberships and set up mail forwarding with USPS.
Lastly, when car shipping in New York, consider the state’s diverse climate. Harsh winters may affect car transport schedules, so plan accordingly. Familiarize yourself with major interstates like I-87 and I-95 for efficient travel. By addressing these aspects, your move to or from the Empire State will be smoother, whether you’re shipping a car or handling other relocation tasks.
New York Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from New York?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from New York. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from New York?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from New York?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to New York?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in New York
When planning car shipping to or from New York, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse seasonal weather patterns. New York experiences all four seasons distinctly, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, snow and ice are common, especially upstate. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport
- Ensure pickup/drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping
- Remove or properly insulate any items that could freeze and expand
Spring and fall in New York can be unpredictable, with rapid temperature changes. When using car shipping services during these seasons:
- Check weather forecasts for potential storms or frost
- Be flexible with pickup/delivery dates due to weather-related delays
Summer brings heat and humidity. If you’re planning to ship a car in summer:
- Use a sunshade to protect the interior
- Remove heat-sensitive items from the vehicle
Beyond weather, consider these factors when scheduling New York car shipping:
- College move-in/out periods: August and May can be busy for car transport near universities
- Snowbird season: October to April sees increased demand as people move south
- Summer tourism: Peak season for visitors, potentially affecting auto transport availability
By considering these seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother experience when using a car shipping company for your New York auto transport needs. Plan ahead, stay flexible, and communicate with your chosen car shipping provider for the best results.
Car Shipping for College Students in New York
When considering car shipping to New York for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at universities. Many NYC schools have limited on-campus parking, often requiring permits or passes. For example, NYU offers limited parking options, while Columbia University has several garages available for students. It’s essential to research specific campus policies before arranging auto transport.
Off-campus housing near universities may not always include parking, so factor this into your decision when shipping a car. Some tips for New York car shipping and storage:
- Check if your university offers long-term parking for winter breaks
- Consider renting a private garage for extended storage
- Invest in snow tires for winter driving in upstate New York
- Verify that your roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location
Remember, car transport to New York City itself may not be necessary due to excellent public transportation. However, for schools in suburban or upstate areas, shipping a car can be beneficial. Always compare car shipping services and choose a reputable car shipping company to ensure a smooth transition to your new academic home.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in New York
New York is home to several military installations, each with unique considerations for car shipping and transportation. Fort Drum, located in Jefferson County, is the state’s largest Army base. For military members stationed here, on-base parking is available, but space can be limited. Many choose to live off-base in nearby Watertown, where parking is generally more accessible. Vehicle registration in New York is required within 30 days of establishing residency.
The United States Military Academy at West Point, situated along the Hudson River, has restricted on-base parking. Cadets typically don’t need personal vehicles, but staff and faculty may apply for parking permits. Nearby Highland Falls offers residential areas with fewer parking restrictions.
For those using car transport services to New York’s military installations, it’s advisable to coordinate delivery to an off-base location due to security protocols. Many auto transport companies, including Sherpa Auto Transport, offer flexible drop-off options to accommodate military needs.
Military families will find various support resources near these bases, including commissaries, exchanges, and family support centers. The Fort Drum area, for instance, offers a full-service commissary and a well-equipped PX.
As a token of appreciation for their service, Sherpa Auto Transport offers a $50 military discount on car shipping services. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice.
Reviews from our New York Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied New York customers:
“I bought a car in New York – I’m in Illinois! Yikes! So, I had to get it home. I picked Sherpa because my wife had heard fellow travel nurses who’d used them for transporting their travel trailers. They seemed reasonable and professional. They didn’t fail me! Got my car from New York to Illinois in less than a week! Got a $50 rebate for booking online. Got a $20 car wash reimbursed when it arrived as well. My only critique was the company they found to drive it here. The driver had a less than pleasant personality, was not going to give me any paperwork at the time of delivery until I asked for it. “Oh, you want a bill of laden? I guess I can fill one out for you.” Other than that, a seamless experience!”
“I shipped a car and a pickup truck from Oregon to New York through Sherpa auto transport in May 2022. Customer service and communication was excellent. Everything that was promised was delivered. The vehicles were picked up and delivered in the time allotted, and arrived without any issues or damage. I was so pleased with this company that when I needed to ship a third vehicle in August I did not hesitate to call Sherpa to do the transport. Again, customer service and communication was excellent, all that was promised was delivered, and the vehicle arrived on time without any issues or damage. I highly recommend Sherpa auto transport!”
“I reached out to Sherpa Auto Transport to arrange transportation for my vehicle from Fort Collins to Upstate New York, and I must say, they were fantastic. Their customer service and communication were exceptional. They expertly guided me through the entire process and connected me with an outstanding trucking company. I highly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport to anyone seeking smooth and reliable transportation services.”
“My experience with Sherpa was wonderful. I had my auto transported from Florida to upstate New York in early April for the six months that I spend up here in the spring/summer. Last year I had a terrible experience with another company and I was a bit apprehensive with finding a reliable company this year. From the start, Sherpa was personable and very professional which instilled a feeling of confidence. I was quoted a very reasonable price up front several months before my actual shipping period. I was contacted as my shipping date approached and all went according to plan. My car was delivered the day after I arrived for the price quoted. I plan on having Sherpa ship my car back to Florida in September.”
“I rarely give reviews, but I can’t wait to give Sherpa the rating it deserves on all platform. After weeks of research and decided to place trust on Sherpa to ship my car from NY to CA, they did not fail me. Sherpa really puts convenience and peace of mind over everything. My car arrives cross country in less than a week in perfect condition, and that’s not to mention the student discount and free car wash I am about to get from them. Sure, the price is definitely steep and not as enticing as other shipping companies out there, but it is locked and guaranteed, so you don’t have to worry about the hassle of the bidding business of the car shipping industry. I only had 4 phone calls since I signed up to get my car cross country a week later: one with Sherpa for a confirmation of a carrier, one with the carrier, and two with the carriers when delivery. My family and I placed a goal of having my car in CA by July 1st. Sherpa shattered that goal by twelve days. We were still amazed. If there’s only one suggestion I’d give Sherpa is that they would ask the carrier they partner with to be more communicative with the customer. Although Sherpa said they would give us a call 12-24 hours prior to pick up, they arrived to our pick up spot in NY unprompted. Had we not been home, the truck might had have to return another day. Luckily, the situation improves once I gave the carrier a call about this and they called me a day before delivery. The customer service, peace of mind and extremely quick delivery outweighs that cons though. Thanks, Sherpa.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in New York, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New York. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
