Factors that affect New York Car Shipping Prices

  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts shipping costs. Transporting a vehicle across New York State or to neighboring states will be less expensive than shipping to or from the West Coast.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for most customers. Enclosed transport, while offering extra protection from New York's varied weather conditions, is typically 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Location Accessibility: Shipping to or from urban areas like New York City is generally cheaper than rural locations. Consider meeting the carrier in a more accessible location near major highways like I-87 or I-95 to potentially reduce costs.
  • Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window, such as Sherpa's five-business-day option, can lead to more competitive pricing. Rush or guaranteed pickup dates typically come at a premium.
  • Vehicle Specifications: The size, weight, and ground clearance of your vehicle affect shipping costs. Larger or heavier vehicles, common in New York's suburbs, may incur higher fees due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship as they require special equipment for loading. Ensure your car is in running condition to avoid additional charges.
  • Seasonal Factors: New York's weather can impact shipping costs. Winter months may see higher prices due to challenging road conditions, while summer often experiences increased demand, potentially raising rates.
  • Route Popularity: High-traffic routes to and from New York, such as NYC to Florida, often have more competitive pricing due to the frequency of carriers traveling these paths.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your vehicle to or from New York. For a more detailed breakdown of pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you're considering enclosed transport for added protection during New York's diverse weather conditions, learn more about open vs. enclosed car shipping to determine the best option for your needs.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your shipment at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from the same area.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping provides the lowest rates and greatest flexibility for negotiating prices. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport is typically more cost-effective.
  • Consider location: Discuss pickup and drop-off locations with Sherpa advisors to find spots near major interstates like I-87, I-95, or I-278. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove all personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues.
  • Be flexible: Offering flexibility in pickup and delivery dates and locations can lead to better options and potential savings. For example, being open to various locations along the I-95 corridor in New York City or near Albany along I-87 could result in more competitive pricing.
  • Opt for off-peak seasons: If possible, schedule your shipment during less busy times of the year. Avoiding peak moving seasons, such as summer months or holidays, can often result in lower rates for auto transport to or from New York.

1. Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a car shipping quote from a trusted provider like Sherpa Auto Transport. Be prepared to provide details about your vehicle, desired locations, and preferred shipping method.

2. Book your shipment: Once you're satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa.

7. Track your shipment: While your vehicle is in transit, Sherpa will provide regular updates. Use this time to prepare for your vehicle's arrival.

8. Receive your vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly. In New York's varying weather, pay special attention to how well your vehicle weathered the journey.

9. Complete the process: Sign the Bill of Lading and pay the remaining balance to finalize the service.
