- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Awesome! I am so happy to praise Crimson in your office, along with Jason and his dad, the drivers from G&H. Wow. Professional, kind, and just plain awesome all the way!”
“I worked with Sherpa to ship my car from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to central Florida and back again 4 months later. Great experience both times. Factors that affect New Mexico Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: New Mexico’s vast landscapes mean that shipping distances can vary greatly. Longer routes, such as from Albuquerque to out-of-state locations, typically cost more than shorter intrastate trips.
- Trailer Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping in New Mexico. Enclosed transport, while about 50% pricier, offers extra protection from dust storms and intense sun, which can be beneficial for luxury or classic cars.
- Location Accessibility: Urban areas like Albuquerque or Santa Fe are easier to access, resulting in lower costs. Remote locations off major highways like I-25 or I-40 may incur additional fees.
- Seasonal Factors: New Mexico’s climate can affect car shipping prices. Summer months often see higher demand and prices, while winter weather in northern regions may impact transport times and costs.
- Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in New Mexico’s rugged terrain, may cost more to ship. Non-running vehicles incur extra charges due to special loading requirements.
- Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive rates for your New Mexico car shipping needs.
Understanding these factors can help you plan your New Mexico auto transport more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your New Mexico car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially bundle your vehicle with others, increasing chances for discounts.
- Choose open transport: Open shipping offers the lowest rates and greatest flexibility for negotiating prices when transporting cars to or from New Mexico.
- Pick strategic locations: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find pickup/dropoff points near major interstates like I-25 or I-40. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during auto transport.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your New Mexico car shipping.
- Consider seasonal timing: New Mexico’s climate varies greatly between seasons. Shipping during off-peak times (avoiding summer and holidays) may result in lower rates for your car transport.
- Explore multi-car discounts: If you’re moving multiple vehicles to or from New Mexico, inquire about potential savings for shipping more than one car.

The Land of Enchantment’s diverse climate and terrain can impact your auto transport experience. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth vehicle relocation:

5. Schedule pickup and delivery: Coordinate with your car shipping company to arrange convenient pickup and delivery times. Remember that extreme summer heat in southern New Mexico may impact scheduling.
6. Track your shipment: Stay informed about your vehicle’s progress as it travels through New Mexico’s diverse landscapes.

New Mexico Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping your car to or from New Mexico, it’s essential to be aware of the state’s unique vehicle requirements and regulations. New Mexico car shipping involves more than just arranging auto transport services; it requires understanding local laws and preparing for your move.
Unlike some states, New Mexico doesn’t have a toll system, so there’s no need to worry about removing toll readers. However, the state does have specific vehicle inspection laws. While New Mexico doesn’t require annual safety inspections for most vehicles, emissions testing is mandatory in Bernalillo County (including Albuquerque) for vehicles manufactured after 1983.
When registering your vehicle in New Mexico, you’ll need to visit a Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office within 30 days of establishing residency. Bring your out-of-state title, current registration, proof of insurance, and a completed Vehicle Application form. New Mexico also requires an VIN inspection for out-of-state vehicles, which can be done at the MVD office.
As you prepare for your move, consider these helpful tips:
- Set up utilities: Major providers include PNM for electricity and various local water utilities depending on your location.
- Internet services: Options include Xfinity, CenturyLink, and local providers.
- Register to vote: You can do this when obtaining your New Mexico driver’s license or online through the Secretary of State’s website.
- School enrollment: Contact your local school district for registration requirements.
- Library cards: Visit your local library with proof of residency to obtain a card.
If you’re moving away from New Mexico, don’t forget to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify relevant institutions of your address change.
When arranging car shipping services to or from New Mexico, consider the state’s unique climate and geography. The arid climate and high altitudes can affect vehicles, so ensure your car transport company is prepared for these conditions. Major interstates like I-25 and I-40 facilitate easy auto transport across the state, making New Mexico an accessible destination for car shipping companies.
New Mexico Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from New Mexico?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from New Mexico. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from New Mexico?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from New Mexico?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to New Mexico?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in New Mexico
When planning car shipping to or from New Mexico, it’s crucial to consider the state’s unique seasonal weather patterns. New Mexico experiences diverse climates, from arid deserts to snowy mountains, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.
During winter months, especially in northern regions like Santa Fe and Taos, heavy snowfall can affect car shipping services. If you’re scheduling a pickup or drop-off in these areas, ensure the location is easily accessible for large transport trucks. Avoid steep, icy inclines that could pose safety risks. Additionally, if your vehicle has snow tires, inform your car shipping company in advance, as most carriers cannot transport vehicles with snow chains.
Summers in New Mexico can be intensely hot, particularly in southern areas like Las Cruces. When shipping a car during these months, consider using a sunshade to protect your vehicle’s interior from extreme heat. If you’re storing items in your car during transport, avoid leaving heat-sensitive objects that could melt or warp.
Spring and fall are generally ideal seasons for New Mexico car shipping, offering milder temperatures and fewer weather-related challenges. However, be aware of potential dust storms, especially in desert regions, which can temporarily delay transport.
Beyond weather considerations, timing your car transport around peak seasons can save you money and ensure smoother service. For instance, if you’re near university towns like Albuquerque or Las Cruces, avoid scheduling auto transport during the start or end of academic semesters when demand is high. Similarly, be mindful of the annual influx of winter visitors (‘snowbirds’) to southern New Mexico, which can impact car shipping availability and rates.
By considering these seasonal factors, you can optimize your New Mexico car shipping experience, ensuring a smooth and efficient process regardless of when or where you’re transporting your vehicle.
Car Shipping for College Students in New Mexico
When considering car shipping to New Mexico for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at universities. Most New Mexico schools require parking permits, which students can purchase online or at campus offices. For example, the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque offers various permit options, including specific lots for residents and commuters. New Mexico State University (NMSU) in Las Cruces also requires registration for on-campus parking.
Before shipping your car to campus, check if your living arrangements include parking. Many off-campus apartments offer dedicated spots, while on-campus housing may have limited options. For winter breaks, UNM and NMSU provide long-term parking areas, but it’s wise to inquire about security measures.
New Mexico’s climate varies, with some areas experiencing snow. While all-season tires are generally sufficient, students heading to higher elevations might consider snow tires for winter. It’s also important to verify that your roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location.
When using car transport services to New Mexico, plan ahead. Book your auto transport early, especially during peak moving seasons. This ensures you have reliable transportation once you arrive on campus. Remember, a reputable car shipping company can make your move to college smoother, allowing you to focus on your studies rather than logistical challenges.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in New Mexico
New Mexico is home to several military installations, making it a crucial hub for service members relocating with their vehicles. Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque and Holloman Air Force Base near Alamogordo are two major facilities in the state. For those using car shipping services to New Mexico, it’s important to note that both bases offer on-base parking for personal vehicles. However, space can be limited, so it’s advisable to check availability in advance.
When it comes to vehicle registration, military personnel stationed in New Mexico have options. They can choose to maintain their home state registration or register their vehicle in New Mexico. The state offers a special military registration process that can simplify the procedure for service members.
The neighborhoods surrounding these bases generally have ample street parking, but it’s always wise to check local regulations. For those shipping a car to New Mexico military bases, remember that the area around Kirtland AFB can get congested during peak hours.
Military families will find essential resources near both bases, including commissaries and exchanges. The Kirtland AFB Commissary offers a wide range of products at discounted prices, while the Holloman AFB Exchange provides various services and goods for military personnel.
At Sherpa Auto Transport, we’re proud to support our troops with a $50 military discount on our car transport services. We thank all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice. Whether you’re relocating to or from New Mexico, our team is here to ensure your vehicle arrives safely at its destination.

“I worked with Sherpa to ship my car from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to central Florida and back again 4 months later. Great experience both times. Was able to keep in touch with the driver throughout the transport process. Car was picked up and delivered within expected window. Car arrived at destination safe and sound both times. Would definitely use Sherpa again in the future.”
“I was very happy with Sherpa`s service. I shipped my car to my daughter`s family from New Mexico to North Carolina. The service is invaluable! The driver was competent and courteous, and my questions were answered all along the way. I would definitely use Sherpa again. I was happy that my daughters family didn`t have to fly out here and then drive the car back to North Carolina. Worth every penny.”
“Drivers were friendly, careful with my car. Clearly experienced in this field. The transport was quick and easy. Very pleased with this service and would definitely recommend. Both pickup and delivery were as scheduled with excellent service. My car was picked up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and delivered in Olympia, WA.”
“It took one month to transport my vehicle from FL to New Mexico. I tried several transport companies prior to contacting Sherpa. One company quoted me $1200 but after they got a driver the price went up to $1900. Another company had what seems like 50 disclosures to sign. I felt like I was signing my life away just to get my vehicle transported. What in the World for! One wanted all their money as soon as the car got picked up. NO! One man felt the need to lecture me about how his company was the #1 auto transporter in the nation and that I had no choice but to pick his company. NO! Soon I realized many of the people who posted negative reviews with the other companies all were recommending Sherpa. The experience with Sherpa was as expected. I got a reasonable quote that was based on market rate, my car got picked up and was delivered as expected. It really should be that simple!”
“Delivery was quicker than anticipated once truck was picked up. The driver was respectful and knew his carrier well. Communication and follow up were excellent. Smooth process from start to finish. Would absolutely recommend Sherpa to anyone needing Auto Transport in New Mexico.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in New Mexico, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New Mexico. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
