Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our New Hampshire customers say about Sherpa:

Google
★★★★★

“After having a poor experience with another transport company last year, I was very cautious in choosing another. After speaking with reps from several of the top rated, I chose Sherpa. I spoke with Kate M. several times and I explained to her my bad experience and she took the time to explain the process and that all of the companies they use have been vetted. She was very patient and understanding of my situation.”

Google
★★★★★

“Sherpa was amazing to work with. I found a Jeep online in New Hampshire on December 15th and had it in my driveway in Florida on December 22nd. I got quotes from 3 companies, and while Sherpa was not the cheapest, they were the most responsive. I was so glad I went with them as they picked my Jeep up 2 days early to beat the snow storm that was headed to NH.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The Professionalism of the Sherpa Auto Transport Company is totally awesome. Starting with the Quote for the transport of my 2016 Subaru Forester from NH to Florida. The price I paid was the originally quoted amount. The CNC Transport Company they contracted was exceptional. Joe; the vetted driver was outstanding. The care that was taken to transport my new vehicle was top-notch.”

Factors that affect New Hampshire Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from New Hampshire. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport. Enclosed trailers, while offering extra protection, are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times. They’re typically only necessary for high-value or classic cars.
  • Location Accessibility: New Hampshire’s urban areas like Manchester or Nashua are easier to access, resulting in lower shipping costs. Rural locations may incur additional fees due to the extra time and fuel needed to reach them.
  • Seasonal Factors: New Hampshire’s harsh winters can affect car shipping prices. Icy roads and snowstorms may lead to higher rates during winter months. Summer, being peak season for auto transport, can also see increased prices.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy and their impact on fuel consumption.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to transport as they can be driven onto the carrier. Non-running cars require special equipment for loading, increasing the cost.
  • Route: New Hampshire’s major highways like I-93 and I-95 are easier for carriers to navigate, potentially reducing costs. Shipments to or from locations near these routes may be more affordable.

Understanding these factors can help you better estimate your car shipping costs to or from New Hampshire. For a more detailed breakdown of pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re unsure whether to choose open or enclosed transport, learn more about the differences in our open vs. enclosed car shipping guide.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your New Hampshire car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles in the Granite State.
  • Choose open transport: Open carriers offer the most cost-effective option for auto transport to or from New Hampshire. While enclosed shipping protects against weather, open transport provides greater flexibility and lower rates.
  • Consider location: Discuss pickup and drop-off points with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major New Hampshire interstates like I-93 or I-95. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can help you secure better rates. Consider allowing a range of dates rather than a specific day for your New Hampshire car shipping.
  • Opt for off-peak seasons: If possible, schedule your auto transport outside of busy summer months or holiday periods. Winter car shipping to New Hampshire might offer lower rates due to decreased demand.

New Hampshire Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from New Hampshire?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from New Hampshire. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from New Hampshire?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from New Hampshire?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to New Hampshire?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in New Hampshire

When planning car shipping to or from New Hampshire, it’s crucial to consider the state’s distinct seasonal weather patterns. New Hampshire experiences all four seasons, with harsh winters and mild summers, which can significantly impact your auto transport experience.

During winter months (November to March), New Hampshire car shipping can be challenging due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth process:

  • Avoid using snow tires or chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with these installed.
  • Choose pickup and drop-off locations on level ground to prevent slipping in icy conditions.
  • Remove any items from your car that could freeze and potentially damage the vehicle during transport.

In contrast, summer months (June to August) are generally mild, but it’s still wise to take precautions:

  • Consider using a sunshade to protect your car’s interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle before shipping your car.

Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial when shipping a car to or from New Hampshire. The state hosts several universities, so auto transport demand spikes in late August and early May during student move-in and move-out periods. To avoid higher rates and potential delays, consider scheduling your car transport a few weeks before or after these peak times.

Additionally, New Hampshire experiences an influx of tourists during fall foliage season (September to October) and winter sports season (December to February). If you’re planning to ship a car during these periods, book your car shipping services well in advance to secure the best rates and availability from your chosen car shipping company.

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smoother, more cost-effective car shipping experience to or from the beautiful Granite State.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in New Hampshire

When considering car shipping to New Hampshire for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at various universities. At the University of New Hampshire, students must register their vehicles and purchase a parking permit. Most dorms don’t include parking, so plan accordingly. During winter breaks, students can store their cars in designated lots. Dartmouth College has limited on-campus parking, requiring students to register vehicles and obtain permits. Many off-campus apartments offer parking, but it’s wise to confirm beforehand. Plymouth State University provides parking for residential students, but spaces are limited. When using auto transport services to ship a car to these campuses, consider the harsh New Hampshire winters. Snow tires are essential, and it’s advisable to check if your roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. Some car shipping companies offer seasonal transport options, allowing students to easily move their vehicles home during extended breaks. Before shipping a car to any New Hampshire college, research the specific parking regulations and winter storage options. This preparation ensures a smooth transition and helps avoid unexpected challenges when using car transport services for your college journey.

Military Personnel Icon

Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in New Hampshire

New Hampshire may not be home to large military installations, but it does have several important military facilities. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, located in Kittery, Maine, just across the border from New Hampshire, is a significant naval facility in the region. While not technically in New Hampshire, many military personnel associated with this base live in the Granite State.

For military members considering car shipping to New Hampshire, it’s essential to know that most housing areas around the shipyard offer ample parking. However, on-base parking can be limited, so it’s advisable to check with your unit for specific regulations. When it comes to vehicle registration, New Hampshire doesn’t require special military registration, making the process straightforward for service members.

The communities surrounding the shipyard are generally military-friendly, with few parking restrictions in residential areas. For those needing auto transport services, it’s worth noting that most car shipping companies can deliver directly to your residence.

Military families will find several resources in the area, including the Navy Exchange and Commissary at the shipyard. These facilities offer significant savings on groceries and other necessities. Additionally, the nearby city of Portsmouth provides numerous amenities and support services for military personnel.

At Sherpa Auto Transport, we’re proud to offer a $50 military discount on our car shipping services. We sincerely thank all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice. “The auto transportation business is fraught with shady companies and bad reviews. After reading so many negative reviews about their competitors I was pretty nervous about the entire process but after stumbling upon Sherpa and reading their BBB reviews I took the plunge. They average 4.7/5 on their reviews. Even the few negative reviews on the BBB website were counterbalanced by excellent follow up by management. I was shipping my father’s car from Utah to New Hampshire. From start to finish they did what they said they would do from the initial contact to the reach out from the driver right through to the follow up after delivery. I was thoroughly impressed with the entire process. The feather in the cap though was getting a $20 credit on a car wash after delivery.”

“Sherpa Auto Transport is a top-notch car transport service. They handled my car with perfection in a transport from Indy to New Hampshire. I could not be more satisfied with the service!!! The quote was fast and very affordable and the pickup and delivery of my vehicle was smooth. Communication was responsive and thorough. I highly recommend Sherpa!”

“I used Sherpa based on their many positive reviews. After receiving an online quote, Scott reached out to me immediately to see if I had any questions. It did take a while for Sherpa to find a carrier that met my pick-up window. Sherpa sent regular emails informing of their progress. The transportation company kept me updated with texts. My car was picked up on the day it was scheduled and delivered satisfactorily to the destination two days later. I would use them again. It was a very positive experience.”

“As soon as I put in some information on the website, I got a phone call by one of the Sherpa associates who gave me a good overview of what the process would look like. She answered all my questions and gave me a detailed quote with timelines. The interaction was quite thorough. The driver reached out to me about 24 hours prior to picking up the vehicle, sharing when he’d be available to pick it up. Even during the process, he had assured me that I could call him at any time if I had any questions regarding my vehicle. 12 hours prior to delivery, I got a phone call from him telling me the approximate time of delivery. He parked around my apartment complex. Overall, it was a very positive experience.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in New Hampshire, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New Hampshire. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
